The good, The bad, & The Ugly facts about camping
SO...we are back from our second camping adventure as a family. True to form, we had our share of trials, tribulations, and fun...no sickies this time though!!! That is a major plus for our vacation time!
This time, we ventured to the beach for a long weekend. Cape Henlopen State Park in Deleware to be exact. This place came highly recommended, and despite the adversities, we do agree with a two solid thumbs up for the park. Out on the Point, you get the best of all worlds with the Delaware bay & the Atlantic Ocean to pick from. Beach access is included in the park camping fee, as well as park entrance for your stay, also a major perk as these can really rack up the price for our large crew. Fishing is there as well, along with hiking, climbing the great sand dune & touring Fort Miles, which is also part of the park along with WW2 towers you can climb. All in all, there isn't much you would want to do that is not available at this park.
SO...what trials, tribulations could we have encountered if there is so much fun to be had?? Hehee...oh let us begin at the place all good stories start...the beginning...
Thursday evening found us packing up the truck, the groaning & moaning over lack of space, thankfulness of the gate we borrowed from mom/dad.
"Honey, were is my phone? Have you seen it anywhere?" I ask.
"Nope, not a clue...did you leave it in the truck maybe?" Len responds.
Too preoccupied with packing up those last items, making sure I didn't forget essential items, I didn't bother to pursue this avenue, figuring the lovely blackberry was safe & sound in the truck where I am known to forget it.
Friday 7am..."SERIOUSLY, turn off that alarm, its VACATION"
a short time later the following conversation is heard:
"Honey, do you know where my phone is? I can't find it anywhere...hmmm"
"Nope, not a clue...is it in the truck from last night maybe??
"I don't know...never looked, wait, didn't you say that last night?"
"ummm, yeah...don't worry, I'll go out in the wet nasty rain & get it for you"
"thank you you sweet man who spoils me needlessly!" (yes, smirk was there)
"honey, your phone isn't in the truck"
"WHAT!?! we have to leave...where could it be???" panic is now setting in
"Ummm...mommy??" comes a pathetic little voice from inside her "kitchen"
"what NOW peach, mommy's freaking over my phone"
"yeah, bout that, um, I was playing with it last night & um, i think i might have forgotten it outside, maybe" the little face peeks around the corner, bit pale & worried she is in BIG trouble since she knows very well that she is not to touch mommy's phone unless asked to do so.
"no, no, no..." i ran out to the deck in a real panic now as it POURED thurs night big time....true to form, there sat the phone on the stair railing, soaked & foggy...
Needless to say, Peach got a real talkin' to by daddy about touching/taking things that do NOT belong to her...tears, many tears, sniffles & sappy "sorries" ensued...switching sim cards to len's phone & finally, FINALLY, pulling out with the gentle warning that if mamma don't get no coffee, we're ALL gunna be in serious trouble!
We arrived just before 1pm, right in time for check in which since it was paid for back in Feb, was nice & smooth. We got to the camp site, feeling excited & delighted as it was far nicer then I had envisioned, one of the largest & nicest sites in the whole park, while being very conveniently located near the bathrooms but not up against them to hear all the noise from showerees who sing too loud :)
Len & I exit the truck to get a lay of the land & within 30 seconds, Len has returned to the truck to rip it apart in search of "the beach bag" to fog us both in Mosquito repellent before they carry us both away leaving our children orphans! Yes, that bad. Overall, we went through almost 3 whole cans of spray in 2 full days...we left hardly bitten except the stray bite through the clothing, so feel it was money well spent!
The set up went fast, much to our delight & by 2pm we were back in the truck for needed items required by "sand" camping (ie Serious tent stakes & more repellent) as well as the much anticipated Grotto's Pizza...known by all as the best beach pizza there is...once these activities were accomplished, we were off to the beach to see what all the fuss was about.
We got halfway to the beach when eagle eyes spotted the herd of dolphin (are they known as a herd?) swimming just offshore about 15'. (He has a really good close up shot towards the end of the album) we had a great time seeing so many up close & took a great walk up the beach till suddenly the fog started rolling in awful quick. We turned & found you couldn't see more then 10 feet in front of you (see the fog pics of the kids, TOTALLY cool). We made it back to camp in time for the first warnings of the thunderstorms, but God gave us enough of a break that we got the fire going, things ready & hot dogs toasted to perfection by the master fire cooker...the last of these were eaten in the comfort of the truck as the rain pelted the tent & truck & we got quite a light show. Len did venture out to help set up the tent for our neighbors who pulled in midway through the storm...he's such a wonderful dude!!
Nightime while camping is such a treat...we got to listen to the peppering of rain which was lovely...but apparently it stopped around 1am & some freak bird decided it was sing song time...i have never hated a bird so much...nor have the sweet loving children we have voiced such violent ends to a creature...it was almost comical to hear Kailey rattle off the things she would do to the bird could she get her hands on it! The banner carrying plane drove us all from our slumbering come 7:30am...we had choice ideas on that pilot too, but we all agreed he could live where as the bird was to die!! violently!!
Saturday we had a great time out on the beach till 12:30pm when we had to go back for lunch & to clean up for the kids to go to their WW2 games class at Fort Miles. Turned out, contrary to the norm, the class was empty except the three of them! Thus, they got the drill instructor & his "helper" for an hour all to themselves to learn about the army, put them through drills, learn combatant hiding skills & he even unlocked those huge guns for the kids to learn how to operate them!! This was a huge treat as he never unlocks them due to the size of the class, so the kids walked away with new skills & a lot of great memories. Such a small class also meant he & his helper got to play too, something they told the kids was really fun & they never get to do. Len & I got to spend the time "alone" with Peach, who cried the first ten minutes because we were hiking around the fort & not playing football or frisbee, the two things she had decided we would be doing during her special time with us...but daddy popped her on his shoulders & promised football once we got back to the truck & all was suddenly well with the world again.
Once we picked up the kids, they hiked the tower with Len while I waited below as I can not climb such lovely things anymore. We hiked back to the truck & toured a few more historic places at this part of the park before heading into Historic Lewes to see the ships that were docked as a special treat, found we had already toured these ships at Jamestown, stopped at DQ for some much needed blizzards, then back to the park to hike out to the Bay beach where we were in luck to see horseshoe crabs galore! You can judge what they were up to for yourselves in the pictures Len shot. :)
Dinner was rain & thunderstorm free that evening...just lots of biting flies, thus the fabulous showering of repellent...smores & hot chocolate for a perfect ending to a lovely & very full day.
Sleep came easy after the day we had out in the sun, bird or no bird, though no planes put the final nail in the coffin on Sunday am...it was two boys needing to go potty...if I were ok w/them hiking to the pot alone at such an hour, I would have succumbed to the slumber...but, I'm not curse it all!! Turned out to be a good thing as we got the fire going, cleaned up stuff to get packed up & were all ready when Len & the girls slowly emerged from the tent around 7am...they got to sit a whole 15 min. before the sky started to cloud up & we knew we were in for it...within 30 min. we had the camp down, truck packed & were all in the truck...just as the rain started to come down...a quick trip to the potty & we re-emerged to find it black as night, winds gusting & people running all over the campgrounds in a panic...by the time we hit the check in booth, it was insane out there...3 minutes later, we had hail pounding us & zero visibility!!! What a blessing from God to have been up & awake enough to get us all ripped down, packed & into the truck before THAT hit us!
As a special treat to the kids, and us, we decided to take the 9:15am Ferry to Cape May NJ! This was a first for all of us, driving onto a boat & riding across the bay & ocean! The skies cleared & we had a great time watching dolphins jump & swim alongside us through the bay, seeing freighters out in the shipping lanes & enjoying hot pretzels for breakfast while getting a quick glimpse at what "sea legs" meant! All in all, that was a great treat for all of us.
After a few hours & a very expensive ocean front breakfast, we headed for home...so beat that all four kids zonked out for two hours in the truck & there was no arguing over going to bed that night.
SO, you ask...is this typical of one of our wild adventures & will we be insane enough to do this again or have we learned our lesson & will stick to more homebound activities?
HAHAHAhAAA yeah, this is very typical of our adventures only we usually have at least one "oops I peed my bed/pants" at the worst possible time, a few total blow outs of attitudes over things not going the way THEY want, and even the fun "i don't feel so good" that land us at least in the docs, but more likely the hospital...that said, we got off easy :) As to doing this insanity again, YOU BET! we are looking at a camping trip to one of the lakes up in NY & already have a long weekend on the books for a camping trip to PA's Little Grand Canyon over our anny...high hopes folks, hiiiiiiiigh hopes!!
Moments...
Moments are as fleeting as the air of your last breath...yet they are what make the memories we long remember that help to form who we become and continue to be. Our May has been full of reflections with the passing of our very dear & beloved Gpa Abe Roth and sweet Uncle Lowell Bechtel. They both lived long, productive, very touching lives & will be sorely missed! May has also brought a new season, a new stage in life. School is out till summer sessions, another "year" has been put behind us.
It is in the times of reminiscing that we relive those special moments, but also give us the desires to make new memories & to move onwards and upwards.
May has brought about firsts for our family as well. We were given the opportunity to travel with Len on a job to the state of New York at the beginning of the month. Having never been to the Hudson River Valley before, I was as excited as the kids to go & not only spend time with len in the evenings, but to discover another beautiful part of our country. We had a great time exploring, but as always, our best time was spent with Len. On Saturday evening after work & Sunday's trip home we explored a lighthouse you can only get to at Low Tide, Clermont Estate, and many waterfalls in the northern part of Pennsylvania. We are extremely excited to get to tag along with Len again soon to Massachusetts over the summer when he works on a hotel up there. We are very very thankful for these opportunities and do not take the adventures for granted.
Another first for us was for the kids, all four, to spend a long weekend with Grandma & Grandpa, the boys & Kristi! We have never gone away like this since having kids, so it was 11 years in the making. Len & I traveled down to Chincoteague/Assateague Islands in VA for 3 days to regroup & try to remember how to just breathe while the kids had a ball up in PA with everyone. Our nightly phone calls were full of stories of all the fun, but by far the best was hearing Peach say over & over that Gpa said they didn't have to go to bed at 8pm & she could stay up as late as she wanted! Oh did that ever make her day!! It was a much much needed break for Len & I, especially having just lost his gpa & being sick and unable to return to IN for the funeral. Closure and the chance to say goodbye is hard to find when life is so hectic & keeps going w/no deliberate stop to just remember & let your emotions carry over. We did nothing wild or crazy, just walked the beach & tried to relax after a very tumultuous last year.
Yet another first will happen in just a few days as we venture out to go camping at the beach! We have only camped with the kids once before in the Smokey Mountains several years ago, so we are quite excited to give this a go. This place has come highly recommended & for how booked it was back in Feb, it must be! The kids will get to participate in "WW2 Games" Saturday, giving us some needed time with just Jazmine. Being number 4 often means no time with just mom/dad, so we are all looking forward to a couple hours to spend with her. If the weather holds out, we are hoping to take the kids on the Cape May - Lewes Ferry as part of our adventure home, giving us a first time of driving onto a ferry & letting it motor us onward toward home. Pictures will be sure to come as we share our crazy non-stop life with you to enjoy with us.
We hope your May has been a wonderful month, full of love & fun spent with your family, bonding & growing deeper relationships with each other to stand the test of time.
New Year, New Home...
Hard to believe its March already! Where does the time go these days?
We found out in mid/late January that mom/dad's house had sold & the new owners wanted to move in by mid February...that meant we needed to find a place to live...we looked at many, many houses, apartments & town homes, but nothing was working out until Friday, Feb. 13th at 3:30pm, that we had a place to live! Mind you, we needed to be out the very next day from mom/dad's house! Yes, this is our life...who needs a week to prepare for a move, who needs even two days to pull it together? Apparently not us! God sure does think a LOT of my sanity level apparently...way far more then I would give myself credit for, that is certain!
SO...we celebrated Valentines Day together as a family in our new home...never did you see 6 happier souls to be sharing supper together!
The house is a big, very old, farmhouse with a newer addition, a detached 3 car garage & lots of room for the kids to run & play out back. The funniest, or not so funny, part is that the house is owned by one of Len's old boss' at Landmark Builders! The house has been in the family for several generations, and they have taken great care of the house & all the outbuildings. We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to live here & have such a lovely place to call home, hopefully our next move will be into our very own "forever" home! :)
Len is on his own now...started his own business back in August, but has gone full tilt on it once we got settled in here. You can see his website at
www.rothrestorations.com We travel for business, joy of homeschooling, so feel free to holler for him to come! :) He has been enjoying reconnecting with so many of the guys he used as subs at Landmark, and others that have since gone out on their own due to layoffs. God is our boss now, it's His company, and we are trusting Him to grow & build up this company to be everything He needs & wants it to be.
Well, that about wraps up our winter! Not too much beyond that happening...kids are working hard & doing really well in school, they are all healthy & have made it through another winter w/o anything more then maybe a case of the sniffles, for which we are so deeply grateful for, not having insurance yet. We are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to plant our early spring garden in the next week, praying for nice warm weather to roll in & stay put for a nice long spell after the very cold winter!
Christmas is on it's way!
hard to believe in some ways that we are at Christmas again already...then we think of how much we have done, seen & journeyed through this year & it's about right :)
We had a great time today as we took the kids shopping for a few fun things for the tree we planned to get, nothing crazy here, just a nice 5-6' tree we could decorate with popcorn & a couple strands of lights...we walked out of the store to find it had started snowing!! The kids were just so excited, and I must admit, so was I. Len even seemed to be enjoying it, or at least our excitement over the new white stuff.
We drove up north to the tree farm as the snow got heavier much to the kids delight. Once there we found out it didn't matter what tree we picked, it was only 30.00. WELL...out the door went the 5-6' tree as their eyes grew as big as saucers when they ran up through the rows of trees to see huge 10', 12' & 16' tall trees. Len apparently felt the excitement of not being limited for once either & off we all ran from one big tree to the next till Len spotted "Our Tree" up a row & over yonder...we got there, and all just loved it...you would think it was built just for us & where we wanted to put it with one side not nearly as full. Len dove under the tree, saw in hand & went to town...it didn't take long for it to come down & off we ran to get it loaded into, i mean ONTO the truck...we hoped. It was a LOT bigger then we had really paid attention to I'm afraid. For a bit the two guys working there really didn't think we could get it onto the truck! But Len tossed her up there & strapped her down for the trip home through the falling snow.
Once in the house, we really got a good idea of what we had done! She stands a beautiful 13-14' tall, 8-9' diameter! It's amazing...such a huge & beautiful tree...I managed to get 3 strings of lights on, but one look & you know you need at least 3 more...and stinging popcorn will be an all day affair, but the kids are super excited to do it as well as make some spicy cookie ornaments too...all in theme with our "homemade for the holidays" Christmas.
Next up on the docket after we finish decorating the tree is our annual trip to HersheyPark for Christmas lights, Santa & the reindeer...some super yummy hot chocolate & fresh smores...mmmmmm mmmmm good!
Hope you are all having a great holiday season & finding your own very special traditions for your families!
The OBX 2008
We left early on Saturday, October 18, 2008 for an adventure we have not had before...we broke up the long drive with a slumber in Virginia Beach at an oceanfront hotel (love the off season rates!) and a long stretch your legs stop midway at Chincoteague & Assateague Islands. We took the kids to these islands for a 5 day weekend way back in '04, so this was a fun memory stop for us. It had been stormy down there just before we came down, so the ocean was in full furry yet & the wind was whipping, but it felt good after being in the truck for 4 hours.
The road to Virginia Beach was something else. We had no idea that we would travel over 13 miles of bridges & tunnels as we crossed the Bay to get into VA Beach! Talk about wild...I think under normal circumstances, we would have had a few sick individuals, but we were in such awe at how incredible the system was, that we ignored the lack of dry land & marveled at how neat it was to get to drive over the water & under it like that.
The night in Va Beach was restful and we all woke up to a really neat sunrise that we were able to capture on camera to share. It was quite windy yet, so we stayed off the beach & opted to head out earlier to the OBX to get a good look around & see if we could get to the house early.
OBX...what an experience! Definitely a "must go & stay" experience if you like our kind of adventure!! We got lots of pictures of the ocean spilling over the dunes & onto the streets in the populated areas of Nags Head & Kill Devil Hills. Nothing like starting off your stay watching the waves, foam & all, come flying over the beaches & under houses to end under your vehicle! We thought THAT was something...but we sure got an eyeful when we picked up our keys & got onto the 4x4 only beach!! Oh my...this is where the adventure changes for some from fun to nightmare, but for our family, it was totally cool even if it was a little scary :) Because of the storms, the waves came clean up to the dunes & somehow we were supposed to drive over 7 miles UP the beach...it took almost 45 minutes, but we finally got up to the turn off & began our drive up and over and around the dunes...some places you saw a "road", other places, it disappeared into a massive swath of undisturbed sand. It was all fun & games till len stopped at the top of one dune, no road, no idea what was beyond the crest, and turned to me saying "I'm a bit worried to go over this one." Needless to say, I was in not in the mood after clinging to my seat & handle as we tried to get through the sand & surf for almost an hour! I gave him a dirty look and told him it was cruel to say such a thing to your wife & hit the gas & JUST GO! We got to the house after a few slides & much shifting sand to find the "driveway" rutted out so deep it was like climbing a mtn to get up to the garage area, but we made it!
The house was all alone, none right up next to it, and those that were around it were empty for our stay. There were 6 bedrooms, 4 on the middle floor, each with its own gorgeous bathroom & a huge screen tv in the family room for the kids to watch the nightly movie on before bed...up on the 3rd floor were tons of windows, a beautiful kitchen, large livingroom, table equipped to seat 10 with 2 high chairs (perfect for our family & the Horton's who came to share the week with us). There was a wonderful bedroom up there as well that Len and I were privileged to stay in. The whole house was decorated like God took me and just poured all my ideas & love of colors into every nook & cranny...even the kids asked if we could just live here, its so "us"...what sweet children! There were covered decks & open ones all over the house so no matter where you were, you had a really amazing view.
Throughout our stay, we got to get up close to the wild Spanish Mustang ponies that are allowed to roam free in the 4x4 area. We also got to see dolphins jumping & dancing their way through the waves...deer feeding right near the horses, conk shells of all colors & sizes, even sponges washed up on the beach! We took the kids on a couple excursions to see Cape Hatteras & the lighthouse which they moved just a few years ago to protect it from falling into the ocean! We got to learn all about the Wright Brothers and the first flight as well as hike throughout the largest sand dune on the East Coast at Jockey's Ridge. Standing 80-100' high, it was quite an experience to be on top of that much sand.
I know there are a TON of pictures from our time away, but hit the full screen slide show & sit back with a cup of something hot and enjoy our 9 days of beach as well as a few pictures from our stop in Fredericksburg on the way home & our short drive along Skyline up in the mtns to see the colors...
We never know where God will have us head to next, but we are excited to bring you along, sharing the experiences He gives us.
Falling back into a routine
Hard to believe we have been back at the PA house for 2 weeks without running to another state! The kids have enjoyed waking up in their own beds as much as we have, but here we are, excitedly anticipating our NEXT adventure! We have a huge, awesome, massive blessing of a house rented on the 4x4 beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina for a whole week! We will be enjoying a week not only ON the beach, but with our fabulous friends, Todd & Rose Horton and their 4 adorable kids! Talk about fun!!!
We decided to leave early Saturday am and drive to Chincoteague/Assateague Islands in VA for a short stay before finishing the drive to the Outer Banks Sunday afternoon. We were browsing the websites last night and found some super cool stuff to do down there in Chincoteague now that all our kids are old enough to really enjoy it. The last time we were there, Peachy was only 8 months old, the twins were 4 & Dawson had just turned 6...not quite old enough for boats or kayaks on the sea!! I will most definitely bring the camera, including one that can get wet & go under water so we get all the awesome pics we can so everyone can enjoy the adventure with us, no matter where you are!
And So It Begins....
Fall...we love fall in the Roth household. The smell of the leaves, the warm days and cool nights that make sleeping so nice! We used to take the kids to the Fall Festival at our grocery store, yes, grocery store, when we lived up here as the beginning of our fall experience. Being back in Lititz, we decided to take advantage of the opportunity and its covered greenhouses to take the kids for lots of fun food, games & a new one for us this year, to build a scarecrow! Len, still on crutches, took all the pictures while I tried to help the kids figure out what to do in what order and get him done...pls see the fall festival pictures to meet the making of Buffalo Bill, though apparently he is also fondly known as Bufflow Bob by certain darling cutie pies. Everyone had a blast and are excited to see what Aunt Kristi, Rick, Grandma & Grandpa, the Greats and all our other company thinks of the new greeter at the front door. It was definitely a fun way to start off our fall fun for the year!
Is There Such a Place as "Home"?
There are times in anyone's life that traveling sounds like fun...a week there, a week here, home to do laundry then off again...I certainly have thought such things. Lately though, I have begun to feel worn out from all the "up & leaving" that comes with the journeys. I definitely am not one to complain about the beach-time, or the time spent with family we seldom see, don't get me wrong. It's more the not having a home to come home to that seems to be the wearing part of it all. Len, the kids, and I, are all feeling it these days, though our new slogan is "where your own bed is, there your home is"
The last month has had us trying to find all our odd things needed for happy days & sleep-filled nights and a week in Indiana helping Lon put his trusses up & getting ready for shingles. We all enjoyed getting to see everyone, eat together & play together. Thanks to the fabulous pitch of the new roof, Len even got a new pair of black slip resistant sneakers, though I haven't seen them since...not sure if he hid them or if Lon's got them on instead of his "sweet" white ones he was so fond of! Jk...I'm sure they are somewhere around here...maybe....
Time to gather up the crew for another fun-filled adventure...watch out, we just may see YOU on the flip side of it all...
Moving
So, we counted...I will have moved 17 times in my life now! How crazy is that?? Poor Len has been party to like 9 of them now! The house is pretty much all packed, we're half cleaned and dead tired...we'll take pics tomorrow as we pack up the huge truck and prepare to say goodbye to one of our all-time favorite states in our journey around the United States. No one is ready to leave Virginia, we all just fell in love the minute we hit the line way back in early April of 2006 and have been so thrilled to be here...we will find ways to get back down here and camp & just enjoy the beautiful and amazing land that God created here!
In the back of my Bible is a quote that really sums up our life as God's children:
"Living a life of faith means never knowing where you are being led. But it does mean loving and knowing the One who is leading" Oswald Chambers
What a relief it is to know we can rest in Him and let Him lead us onward, even when we have no clue where we are going or what we will do, but we do know that He will always take care of us and never leave us!
Good night from stormy Virginia...
