It's Been a While

In the life of Killian not commenting for even just a month means tons of changes have occurred. He is walking and even running... usually away from Karl because he pounds on the floor after him. He climbs everything (and I do mean everything) that he thinks he can and even some things I know he can't but he tries anyway. We have his step wagon wedged behind the couch and he likes to climb up and look out the window. I clean that window at least every other day now. We took down two of the gates downstairs and installed a bottom stair gate so he can have more room to roam. This gives him access to look out the front storm door with Mila (she'd rather he didn't but still tolerates him... I'm pretty sure it's because she knows he's a source of thrown food). We also installed a top of the stairs gate which I see us having until we either move out of this house or he's an adult and moves into his own place. Our very steep and slippery stairs are right outside his room. Karl, Mila and I have all slipped down those stairs at least once. He's decided that he likes to shower with me lately. It's cute and I let him get in but it doesn't help my time schedule in the mornings. Someday I will miss him wanting to spend any time with me so I'm going to enjoy those moments when he does. His "attitude" is showing much more and it usually shines during dinner. If there's something he doesn't want to eat it's best to just accept defeat and move on. He's a huge fan of strawberries, blueberries and any other kind of berry. Fruits are his friends, green stuff his enemy. Mila ends up with the left overs and I'm amazed she's not 200 pounds by now. I wondered why her dog food is never eaten and it's because she's full already. He is still in the same infant/toddler class at daycare but for the sake of the 3-6 month old babies I really hope they move him to the next room soon. I think it will only be another month before he's moved... won't be the big fish in a little pond anymore! Now that it's summer I'm looking forward to the end of ear infections. This winter and all the colds he had were no fun and he's so much fun to be around when he's feeling good. I've rambled enough but to end with the penis update (because all good stories end with penis don't you know). We took him to a urologist about his penile adhesion, they gave us some ointment we have to apply twice a day for 2 months. It seems to be helping and I was thrilled he didn't suggest re-cutting him. I wouldn't have allowed it anyway unless he told me it would fall off if we didn't. Another month and we should have a "Free Willy"... get it : )

Killian's 1st Birthday Party

The party was wonderful! Thanks in part to all our good friends and a Papa that came from near and far to celebrate with us (the 2.5 hour nap Killian's had before the party was key as well). It was a slightly sad affair when the sock monkey did his duty and gave his life for our entertainment. Killian was merciful and dispatched of him with a swift bite to the head. The cake didn't survive a chance after that. The weather did us a huge favor by not raining on us and forcing way too many people into our small house. True to form the gift that seems to have no end to it's entertainment is the balloon his Papa brought him. I haven't the heart to tell him it will soon deflate because he's absolutely mesmerized by it so I'm hoping it hangs on to life for a few more days. Mila survived the party in thanks to Windy for making sure no one banged into her healing knee and was obviously feeling well enough to beg from everyone she saw with food. Karl, Killian and I thank everyone for the fabulous gifts and more importantly the time you took to help us wish Killian a proper happy first birthday. He's a lucky boy!

Almost 1 Year Old

Killian will be 1 year old in two weeks. How the heck did that happen? I know he's bigger and does all sorts of new things but I don't seem to remember all the in between parts because it went so fast. He's eating lots of non-baby food now but is really picky about it. If you watch the new video I just posted you can see his normal reaction to something he doesn't like (right hand column under the heading "video"). We just keep trying new foods and hoping he becomes more open minded to new tastes. He ate a chunk of dirt the other day and I was happy he didn't find it appetizing. The dry heave reaction was a good sign he "might" not do it again. He's a walking better and better everyday. He still crawls a lot too. Sometimes his feet just won't keep up with his excitement and he wipes out. Good thing is that he usually dusts himself off and just keeps trucking. He's learning lots of other things like hugs, kisses and the much required high five. We've realized we definitely have a boy on our hands because one of his favorite toys is the ball. He rolls it, chases it, wants to kick it and sometimes even hugs it. It's almost always the toy he wants most and if he doesn't get what he wants he has some new and very fun tactics to let me know he's not pleased; throwing him self backwards and hitting his head on the floor (he does that when he's really upset and gets a lot more upset when he notices that hitting his head on the floor hurts... but it doesn't stop him from doing it over and over); he's also mastered the arched back maneuver when going into the stroller or is put somewhere he doesn't want to be (he does this when I pull him out of the tub... I swear he'd stay in the tub for hours if I let him); diaper changes are still a huge challenge and 99% of the time I have to change him while he's standing up because placing him on his back will throw him into a fit and he fights and twists... my last root canal was more enjoyable than changing his diaper sometimes. Even when he's difficult he's just plain hilarious. He talks a lot... to us, to Mila, the neighbor's cat, his toys and himself. I'd love to report my boy is a genius and is speaking five languages but when I say "talk" I mean gibberish that makes zero sense. Although this year has been exhausting I've come to realized how happy I am that he's here. I love everything about him. My boy is no longer going to be a baby!

* Note: Although there is a tone of sadness that he will no longer be a baby it by no means indicates that I am longing for another baby. Unless hell freezes over and by last check it's still nice and toasty.

The 24lb Behemoth (AKA Killian)

Killian went to the doctor the other day for a check up on a fever. Turned out to be nothing and he been a happy camper ever since. I think he just faked it to get out of daycare and come home early. He does that a lot but sometimes I think it's his teachers wanting to go home early themselves.

At every doctor visit they weigh him and I was pretty surprised to find out he's now 24 lbs 4 oz. He's a behemoth! I know he feels heavy but he doesn't look like an overly chubby guy. The weird thing is that he's a totally picky eater. Loves his bottles but shuns a lot of table food I give him. Wonder if their scale was off but the doctor didn't seem to think so... just said he's had a growth spurt.

First Steps

Killian took his first "real" steps today. He was standing at the corner of the couch and took two whole steps on his own towards me. He wobbled like a drunken sailor but he made it to me without falling. He wouldn't have made it more than those two steps but it's extremely fun to watch him learn something new. Speaking of learning something new... my Dad caught him pulling himself up to look out the window! Killian grabs onto the window ledge and pushes up off the baseboard with his feet. Now that he's done it once he's trying it all the time. Sometimes he falls but he usually lands with a huge grin on his face.

Non-Stop Kind of Guy

The boy is well and over his ear aches... at least I think he is but since I can't see in there I'm going to assume the meds did their job.

He's getting more and more active which I didn't think was possible. He's a non-stop kind of guy and getting into things where ever he goes. He's managed to ruin my laptop power cable by sucking on the end. I convinced Apple (which means I left out the part about a baby sucking on the cord) to give me a new one. He got a hold of that one too. I didn't have the cajones to go back to apple a second time and begrudgingly paid the $80 for a new cord. Which I now protect like a mountain lion from the boy getting near it.

He's learning that words mean people and things. A favorite of his is the bird mobile in his room. When I say "birds" or "where are the birds" he knows exactly what I'm talking about and raises his arm (because I usually let him swat at the mobile to make the birds "fly"). He's known for a long time who Mila is because when I ask him "where's Mila" he starts to look down and around for her.

Speaking of Mila... she's loving the boy at dinnertime. She hovers around his highchair and catches every scrap that falls. She won't have to do that too much longer since Killian likes to reach down and feed her himself. I'm not too thrilled about that but I knew it was only a matter of time until he figured it out. He gets a big kick out of her eating from his hand.

Killian is now fond of carrying objects around in his mouth. Usually his soft toys like the spare mobile bird. It's hilarious watching him crawl from one side of the room to the other, play with toys, pull himself up on the couch all with something in his mouth like a dog. Whatever keeps him happy and entertains me at the same time is a good thing... no, it's a great thing!

He now sleeps about 11 hours a night. Wish I could say the same : )

Never Ending Story

Killian is sick once again. He has a cold which has made him crabby, snotty and generally pretty unfun to be around. I had a good inkling that he also had an ear infection and the doctor proved me right during our visit today. Not just one ear but both again. He's on meds for his ears and it looks like his cold is getting better. He'd been coughing so much that he's not sleeping very well either. Poor little dude.

At the end of March he is going to another doctor to check out his tongue. He's what they call tongue tied. Not sure how much or how it could affect things in the future but we thought it couldn't hurt to see someone now. Worse case scenario is that he has to have a little bit of the connecting tissue under his tongue snipped. Does not sound like fun. But it's obvious his tongue isn't normal since he can't get the tip past his bottom front teeth. Most babies stick their tongues out but Killian has never been able to do that.

I'll save everyone the details on his penile adhesion issue which is a topic he'd probably ask me to not publicly discuss : )

A Boy and his Wiener

Like most of the world's male population Killian has begun his life long love affair with his wiener. A love so strong it has momentarily drained some men of all intelligence in the quest to keep their wiener happy. Just ask Bill Clinton. Killian discovered it just the other day. Diaper off, hands down and a smile so big it would make you think I just bought him a pony.

A New Year

The photos I post here are only a smidge of what I actually take... I have thousands of photos! Don't feel odd if you find yourself cruising through his old photos... I do it all the time!

Killian is doing very well. Crawling, pulling himself up on anything taller than himself and creating amusing chaos where ever he goes. He's awesome! He eats finger foods and loves to shove large pieces of rice cracker in his mouth which causes him to gag and me to panic. Changing his diaper and clothes has become a challenge because he'd rather be playing which is why he's playing at his music table nude. I'd let him be nude a lot more if it weren't winter. He loves daycare and it makes me feel good that when I drop him off he completely ignores me and crawls away to play with his friends. He doesn't even bother to acknowledge me when I say goodbye but he's very happy to see me when I pick him up. Waking up at night is still a battle but I'm lucky that Karl is the night duty person.

Overall Killian is having a great start to 2009! It's amazing that in less than 4 months he will turn 1 year old and no longer be a baby. How the heck did that happen? I guess time just flies when you're so busy a 10 minute shower is considered a luxury.
