The website will stay up until July 15, then I will be deleting all pictures, info, etc. to prepare for next year's Kindergarten class. Please make sure you download any pictures and information that you want before that date!

Thank you again for allowing me to teach your child this year. It is amazing to see how they have grown as people, readers, and writers! I am very proud of each and every child and feel confident that they are ready for 1st grade!
*Please work with your child over the summer or they WILL lose some of the things that they have learned!!
Riverdeep is available FREE all summer and is a great and fun resource!
This year's class LOVE to read more than any other children that I have taught. They would rather read than play on the playground! Check out books from the Public Library!
WRITING is one of the most important skills that MUST BE practiced.
IDEAS: write a letter to a friend or family member, maybe they will respond back!
write a response to a book they have read
write about what they did each day over the summer (journal)
Math: The ideas are endless for counting, telling time, adding, subtracting, and identifying coins and their value. These things can be practiced in everyday activities!

Updates

We are learning about living and non-living things. We were very excited to discover that our tadpoles had grown very tiny back legs over the weekend! This week we will learn about the life cycle of a frog. We are anxious to see what other changes they will undergo. We are also observing our plants as they grow. We discovered that the seeds grow roots to help the plant get water. We will continue to take care of them each day and watch them as they grow and change. We have reviewing the letters of the alphabet. PLAY DAY is on Wednesday. We are still in need of several parent volunteers from 9-10AM on that day. If you are able to help out, please let me know.

Cleanup day, butterflies, and tadpoles

Even though tomorrow is Earth Day, we celebrated it today by cleaning up out school. We worked hard to pick up trash and dead leaves from our playground area. Our 5 caterpillars came out of their chrysalis' early Monday morning and are now 5 beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. To celebrate Earth Day tomorrow, we will be releasing our butterflies by the newly planted flowers (Thank you 1st grade!). We now have new pet tadpoles that Ms. Faller collected from the lake by her house. We will watch them closely as they grow and change and eventually turn into frogs! We will also be growing plants of our own on Thursday and watching them grow. After this week, we will have completed our review of all of the letters of the alphabet. We are working hard on addition, which is lots of fun. Addition can be practiced anywhere and lots of simple games can be played. Ask your child to teach you to play our dice addition game (Instructions are on the Curriculum page under MATH). In Reader's Workshop we have been reading Eric Carle books and created a chart comparing the othes we have read. We even got borrow Ms. Bradley's 1st grade class' Hermit Crab for when we read A House for Hermit Crab. It was exciting to watch him all day.

In Writing, we have begun Persuasive Writing. Today they had to PERSUADE me to let them have recess.
This is what they came up with:
I think we should go to recess because it is lots of fun. We need to run around and get rid of some energy. We need the fresh air. Also, we get exercise by running. It gives Ms. Faller a break and time to rest (so they think! I reminded them that I spend recess time watching them to make sure they stay safe!). We like it a lot.

After they persuaded me to let them go to recess, they got pretty hot and thirsty outside and wanted to get a drink of water.  They had to 'talk me into' letting them get water (its hot outside, water is liquid and cold and we need it to be healthy and strong, it tastes good, we are sweating a lot from running around, we are thirsty> those were some of their answers!)

See CURRICULUM Page for more information.

Happy Easter!

Thank you to everyone who sent in plastic candy-filled eggs and egg cartons. We had a fun-filled day of Easter activities and even an Easter Egg Hunt! Pictures from today's activities are up, so check them out!  Thank you to Mrs. Lavender for coming in and taking some great pictures of the Easter Egg Hunt! Those pictures will be up next week!

We have been observing caterpillars as they grow. They are beginning to make their chrysalis. On Monday, we will be moving the chrysalis to the butterfly habitat and observe them as they become butterflies! Pictures of the caterpillars and this process will be posted soon. Ask your child to tell you about the changes that we have seen.

*We are almost completely out of glue sticks. If you are able to donate any it will be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your support.

Have a great long weekend and HAPPY EASTER! :o)

Updates

The information under CURRICULUM is updated weekly. I have added the homework for the week, as well as pictures of the shapes that we are discussing in math under the FILES section (right column on the CURRICULUM page). There is also writing paper that you can print out to help your child write on the lines. This is also the paper that they are used to using in class. Need another book log? Send your completed one to school in your child's agenda, or download a new one from the FILES section!

Copy Paper

As we begin the 2nd semester, we are very much in need of reams of copy paper. Any donations would be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED!!

Read Books on the Computer!

GREAT NEW LITERACY INTERNET RESOURCE!

Our Houghton Mifflin Reading Curriculum now has wonderful new online resources for students, teachers, and families! Students can read books online or have them read to them. They can search through a variety of genres and levels, as well as read the books that I have sorted into categories. There is a great Families area of the site, which offers useful tips and ideas to help your child grow as a reader. Check it out! Information for this site will also be under the WEBSITES tab of this website.   www.eduplace.com/eservices

100th Day of School!

The class will celebrate THE 100th DAY OF SCHOOL on Monday, February 2nd!  As part of the celebration, we will make a snack consisting of 100 items. If you are able, please send the item that was written in your child's planner to school on or before Friday, January 30th.

We will also be having a special show and tell on this day.  Please help your child count out 100 small items to place in the provided bag that was sent home on Monday.  You can use things like cereal, popcorn, paper squares, or buttons.  Then have your child return the bag to school on Friday, January 30th so that we can prepare for our 100th day show and tell.

New Site Features

I added tabs to better organize the website.

*CALENDER tab: The resource schedule is now posted on the calendar so you can check when your child has PE (wear sneakers!) or library (bring your book!).

*CURRICULUM tab: You will see what we are working on this week. There are also helpful hints to help you work with your child at home and the list of sight words.

*PICTURES: You are now able to download and print full quality photos from home. When viewing a picture, click on the 'Download this picture' link which is on the right.

*WEBSITES: A list of my favorite sites and helpful resources. These include the CTE website, CTE library website, Art Talk with Mrs. Woodlief, Kindergarten Virtual Backpack, and Riverdeep. There is also the login information for Riverdeep.
