I would like to share with you some comments about the experience of going to the Opera at Rome. (Please, I would like to apologize because I´m sure I´m going to make grammar mistakes. By the way, corrections are welcome!!)

I think that some of you knew that I was trying to make the arrangements to see Madame Butterfly at . Gerry and Diane listened to me talking about it, and asked me to attend it together. (It was a great opportunity to have my first TWO TO ONE activity!! What a privilege!

Finally, after many phone calls and internet connexions, I had bought the tickets for Madame Butterfly, one of my favourite Puccini’s operas! Besides, I have a special relationship with this opera because I had the opportunity of being its stage-manager for tree seasons, working with many scene and musical directors, and very different scenographic designs. I still remember my first performance. I was felling nervous and excited at the same time. But it was amazing, it’s a dream for all stage-managers to be in charge of the opening of the season. I had such a good time behind all the work and the long nights without sleeping... I made lots of friends, who are still my friends now even though I haven't seen them in a long time.

Returning to the Opera... The location where Madame Butterfly would perform was the grand archaeological complex of the Terme di Caracalla. It is uniquely well-preserved among the great Roman baths, a monumental archeological site which becomes a stage.

And we were there! Diane, Gerry and Me. The music began to play, and the magic invaded the stage. Everything was perfect! Music, voices, lyrics, scenography, costumes, lights.... I couldn’t believe I was there. 

It was really interesting to see the changes of scenes and acts. It was possible because there were not any curtain to cover the stage during the entreact.  Unconsciously, I was felling very comfortable with that situation, as in my natural habitat. I had to make a hard exercise of self-control, to continue standing at this side of the stage, and not following my impulses of jumping over the orchestra to get the intercom on stage and take the control of the change!!

I would like to mention the special effects of the scenography in the second act, in which each flower reminds us of a butterfly. It was possible to see through the scenography, discovering the Terme´s walls just behind the stage. 

At the end of the performance the tree of us felt a little deception with audience reaction. I was expecting a very passionate reaction from the public. I have thought that Italian people should become a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic audience. But it was absolutely frozen! At the same time that the opera ended, the audience abandoned the theatre, even musicians!! By the time the Musical Director got into the stage to give the Orchestra  the "cue" to stand up and wave, there were just a few musicians!!

But we (Gerry, Diane, and me) continued with the same enthusiasm! And we had to make an effort to abandon the location, to leave behind us the magic and the poetry, and also the time we spent together sharing a spectacular event like that.

We knew that the moment to say Good Bye (to good friends) would arrive sooner or later. You everybody can understand what I mean, it was the same feeling of the day before, at the airport...  And believe me, I miss you as the best friends you have become in one of the most exciting weeks I have ever lived...

May I just echo the comments of the other respondents and offer you my sincere thanks for setting up such a wonderful site. Don't worry not finished yet as in the words of my namesake (at a stretch) poet John Donne, "When I have done, I have not done for I have more". Now Ben I'm sure it has not escaped your attention that a certain Usain "lightening" Bolt has stolen the thunder of what was once the proud American tradition of being the sprint kings, so I beseech you on behalf of your fellow country men to at least think about coming back out of retirement and putting that young whippersnapper in his place by kicking his ass over both the 100m and 200m!!

Sorry about the lateness of my reply, its just that it hasn't stopped raining since I came back so I've been busy building an Ark and also mulling over what pairs of species I shall allow on board. After many sleepless nights I've decided upon 2 Scandinavian women, 2 Brazilian women, 2 Italian women etc. etc............I apologise to any New Zealand women out there but this ship sails without ye!!

While I acknowledge your moniker as the photographer, I also couldn't help myself  thinking of you as "Gentle Ben" much like the bear in Grizzly Adams, as for who would be the mule, number 7, I guess you could take your pick from Anthony, Gary, Gerry, Mick with Colin as a long shot!!

Anyways thanks again Ben, unfortunately didn't bring a camera so can't contribute any photo's but looking at all the photos is a timely reminder of all the fun we had together in Borgo di Celle.

Ostia was a blast by the way, if a tad too hot for us pale skinned Irish boys. Needless, to say, we spent most of the time slamming tequillas and grooving to Eminem down at the nightly beach parties – much like the ancient Romans did centuries ago. Although, I think if I heard the song “Chihuahua” played one more time, I would have to hit somebody. Hard.

Thanks Ben for this amazing website!! It´s superb!! I was expecting just a site to share pictures, but this is even better! Now it is possible to keep in touch with everybody! I love ir, it´s fantastic!

I´ll try to contribute with pictures, and comments, and be sure I will write about how things are going after the program.

I wish to recognize and thank Natacha for the group photo that she had sent to everyone last Tuesday, 5/8.  It was perfect for the web site that I setup for our special group.

I miss you all and keep on sending in your photos and making comments wherever and whenever possible.

This is just a simple wee note to say thank you to you, Ben, for this terrific site, and to everyone else for a magical, unforgettable week's experience! I've just about fully recovered and will be more in touch, individually and collectively, soon.
