Dr. Grissino-Mayer, University of Tennessee in Knoxville,  described and illustrated the ways that dendrochronology (study of tree rings) is being used to date and help explain historic sites from Europe to St. Augustine.

see "Useful Links" section above for more information on Dendochronology

The February 10th speaker was Rachel Wentz, PhD, RPA, Regional Director, East/Central Region. Florida Public Archaeology Network. Carl Halbirt Spoke at the SAAA Annual Meeting on January 6th 2009 summarizing significant discoveries during 2008 that have expanded our understanding of St. Augustine's history

October 30 Meeting

Dr. Jason Ur, from the Harvard University Department of Anthropology, spoke on   "New Research on the Origins of Urbanism in Ancient Mesopotamia".

Scholarly consensus places the initial appearance of cities in southern Mesopotamia (modern southern Iraq) in the late 4th millennium BC. From its origins at the city of Uruk, the idea of urbanism spread outward. Recent research in northern Mesopotamia challenges this model.

At Tell Brak in northeastern Syria, recent survey and excavations have demonstrated the archaeological signs of urban society and a trajectory of demographic growth starting at least a millennium before Uruk.

This presentation described the sequence of urban growth at Tell Brak between 4200-1300 BC and will discuss the challenges of studying early urban places in Mesopotamia.

For more information, see the 'Useful Links' section.

October 7 Meeting

The speaker for this meeting was Willet Boyer, a seventh generation Floridian and Ph.D. student at the University of Florida.  He spoke on "The Acuera of the Ocklawaha River Valley:Keepers of Time in the Land of the Waters".
