Final 2008 Season Summary

The 2008 Pomona-Pitzer Soccer team finished up an extremely successful season as the first runner-up in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference ("SCIAC") playoffs.  See SCIAC 2008 Soccer Standings.

In 2007, the Hens (5-12-1) had a tough season as the squad was decimated by injuries and could only manage 5 wins.  Equally troubling, the team sustained 12 losses during the regular season, with 9 of them coming in conference play.  See Schedule-Results tab, 2007. As a result, Pomona-Pitzer finished near the bottom of the SCIAC table and would have needed a space shuttle to qualify for the playoffs.  But, what a difference a year makes. 

In 2008, Coach Swartz's squad was able to completely turn around the team's fortunes.  At 10-7-3 (overall) and 7-4-3 (regular season conference play), the Hens not only doubled  their number of wins, but also manged to more than halve their number of conference losses. See Schedule-Results tab, 2008 v. 2007.  Over the course of the season, they scored roughly twice the number of goals (40 - 21).  In fact, when the Cal Tech mismatches are discounted, the team put the ball into the back of the net almost three times as frequently (30 - 11) as last season.  On the defensive side of the ball, the Hen's improvement was also palpable as they gave up virtually 1/3 fewer goals (24 - 31).  See Statistics tab, 2008.

The season highlights were many and varied.  Most importantly, they regained the coveted golden boot by winning their season series with archrival CMS.  The first match was decided in dramatic fashion when Andrew Stamm scored the games only goal with 2 seconds left on the clock.  See News, 9/24/08 write-up.  The rematch was no less dramatic with Rob "2Pac" LaManna managing to score the equalizer with less than 9 minutes remaining.  See News, 10/18/08 write-up.
 
One of the biggest highlight of the season came when the Hens were able to capture one of the four coveted SCIAC playoff spots.  Although the playoff rankings were not finalized until the very last weekend, the Hens set the groundwork for their third place finish when Zach Mirman scored a pair of goals in an exciting 2-1 comeback victory over a tough Occidental squad that had beaten the team earlier in the season. Not satisfied with just making the playoffs, the Hens went on to defeat the University of La Verne 1-0 in their first round match.  The game was decided early on by a particularly wicked 40-yard volley by Andrew Jacobsen.  See News, 11/6/08 write-up.  The win was extra satisfying as it also allowed the boys to avenge the team's previous week loss to the Leopards.

In the finals, Pomona-Pitzer demonstrated that their tie with  the University of Redlands earlier in the season was no fluke.  See News, 9/17/08 write-up.  Shocking the nationally ranked Bulldogs, the Hens managed to take a 1-0 lead into the last 15 minutes of regulation time.  Unfortunately, Redlands managed to score the equalizer with 12 minutes left and push the match into extended play.  Eventually, the boys (who were playing down a man) lost a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in double overtime to the talented Bulldogs.  See News, 11/8/08 write-up.

Over the course of the 2008 campaign, the Hens scored a very respectable 40 goals (2.0 goals per game).  Rob LaManna (7) and Andrew Stamm (7) led the team by each rolling a lucky number seven.  Just behind were Andrew Jacobsen (6), Wynn Sullivan (4), and Zach Mirman (3).  Coming up snake eyes were: David Martin (2), Dylan Farrell (2), Evan Munoz (2), Cam Taylor (2) and Eben Perkins (2).   Rounding out the scoring were  Kyle Hill (1), Owen Hawkins (1), and Gator Halpern (1). 

The Stammer (6) and 2Pac LaManna (5)  also led the squad on the assist side.  Gator Halpern (2),  Zach Burke (2) David Martin (2), Cam Taylor (2), and Zach Mirman (2), all put up a deuce.  Also lending a helping hand: Harry Hanson (1), Eben Perkins (1), Andrew Jacobsen (1), and Kyle Hill (1).

The Hen defense posted eight clean sheets and allowed 24 goals over the course of the campaign (an average of 1.2 goals per game).  All team and individual statistics can be found under the Stats Tab.

SCIAC Finals

REDLANDS, CA -  The 2008 soccer season boiled down to one game between Pomona-Pitzer and the University of Redlands (16-4-2).  It was the SCIAC finals and they were to be contested on the home turf of the Bulldogs – a perennial SCIAC powerhouse who had finished first in the SCIAC for the last seven years and finished the 2007 campaign ranked 8th in the nation.  See Schedule-Results Tab (for a "History of SCIAC Champions").  This season the bulldogs tore through conference play (12-0-2) allowing only two ties to mar in otherwise perfect record.  Fortunately, one of those ties were against the Hens who proved that when they bring their “A” games they can play with any team in the country, including the Bulldogs.  See below, 9/17/08 Recap.
   
Coach Swartz showed that he was not intimidated by the powerful Dogs; refusing to adopt a defensive alignment, hunker down, and play for a tie.  To the contrary, he once again deployed midfield/defender Andrew Jacobsen as a striker.  Further showing his commitment to playing an attacking game, he teamed Jacobsen up front with fellow midfielder/forward Rob LaManna.  In the midfield, he started Kyle Hill and Wynn Sullivan on the wings, and put stalwarts David Martin and Andrew Stamm in their normal central location.  As was the case during much of the season, the backline was composed of Zach Burke, Eben Perkins, Alex Larson, and Zach Mirman.

The Bulldogs also began the game in a 4-4-2 alignment.  Starting up front for the Bulldogs was the all-time Redlands leading scorer and SCIAC player of the year, Senior Ross Schunk.  Schunk was paired with Senior Alex Parker, a former SCIAC first team selection and one of the fastest players in the conference.   The two Redland forwards accounted for a remarkable 29 goals during the 2008 season.   The potent duo was backed up in midfield by Senior Bryan Fakkema, a former first team All-SCIAC and Western Regional Tournament Player.  In 2007, Fakkema was selected as the SCIAC player of the year and ranks among the most skilled midfielders in the country.   In 2008, Fakkema had already notched 8 goals and 8 assists for the Dogs.

From the outset, the match was fast and furious.  Although the Bulldogs had the majority of possession and a wide edge on scoring opportunities, the Hen defense held fast.  As the Redlands' attacks continued, Coach Swartz was forced to adopt a slightly more defense alignment.  Prior to the conclusion of the half, he brought in Midfielders Gator Halpern, Dylan Farrell, and Cameron Taylor in an effort to slow the Redlands attack.  This tactic proved at least partially successful.  At the conclusion of the first half the score remained: Hens (0) - Bulldogs (0).

The second half featured more of the same.  The only change in the Hen line-up came as a result of an injury to Jacobsen (who butted heads with a Redlands’ player).  In response, Coach Swartz moved Wynn Sullivan up front and utilized Freshman Fanco Simbana in the midfield.  Although Redlands continued to pepper the Hens with shots, goalie Charlie Balter absolutely refused to let anything into the back of the net.  Through the first 73 minutes of play, Eben Perkins and the rest of the Hen defense turned aside 27 Redlands shots.  Balter was absolutely sensational saving over a dozen Redlands’ scoring chances, including a point blank shot by Schunk from no more than five yards away.

In the 74th minute it appeared that all the boys hard work was going to pay off as the Stammer was pulled down deep in the Bulldog penalty area as he was breaking in on the keeper.  The referee immediately whistled for a penalty which was calmly converted by the Stammer.   With less than 17 minutes remaining in the match, the score was: Hens (1) v. Bulldogs (0).  It was desperate times for the Bulldogs, and they certainly responded with desperate measures.  Following the Hens' goal, Redlands immediately launched an all out attack on Pomona-Pitzer.  In quick succession, Midfielder Cale Rodriguez (73:44), Forward Alex Parker (74:55), and Midfielder Bryan Fakkema (76:47) all launched potent shots.  The last shot by the ever-dangerous Fakkema appeared to beat Balter, but was ruled “no goal” by the linesman who indicated that it did not cross completely into the net.  This good fortune did not last long.  In the 79th minute, Fakkema found Parker at the top of the 18-yard box with a bit of space.  Parker took advantage of this opportunity to blast a shot into the back of the net just out of Balter’s grasp.

All was not lost as the boys refused to lose their composure.  Unfortunately, the hill they had to climb got considerably steeper when the referee awarded Eben Perkins a red cards less than two minutes after the Redlands' score.  Although it was clear that Perkins fouled the Redlands’ player, it was questionable as to whether he should have been “carded” at all, and a red card was clearly excessive given the circumstances.  Rather than fold, though, the boys continued to battle and held off the Bulldogs over the next ten minutes even though they were forced to play down a man.  At the end of regulation, the score remained: Hens (1) - Bulldogs (1).

The team was now faced with two 10 minute halves with “golden goal” rules in effect (i.e., the first team to score would be declared the winner).  If no team scored during the 20 minute overtime period, the winner would be decided by penalty kicks.  Once again, Coach Swartz refused to play for a tie.  At the urging of his team, he refused to go into a defensive shell, preferring to play down a defender in a 3-4-2 alignment.   The tactic appeared to succeed as the Hens battled the Bulldogs fairly evenly despite being down a man.  In the first 10 minute period, the Hens had several scoring opportunities and launched 3 shots to the Bulldog’s 4.  None of the shots, however, were able to find the back of the net.

Finally, in the second overtime period, the Hens ran out of luck. Playing with only three defenders, Redlands' player Jeff Wiley found some open space inside the Hen 18-yard box. Receiving a pass from midfielder Nick Gunderson, Wiley made the most of his opportunity by slotting the ball in the right hand corner of the net out of Balter’s reach.  Final Score: Hens (1) - Bulldogs (2) (Double Overtime).

Despite this loss, the Hens put up a magnificent performance against a highly talented Redlands’ team.  They never gave up and refused to even think about playing for a tie.  Rebounding from a losing season where they didn’t even qualify for the SCIAC playoffs, the 2008 Hens came within 17 minutes of an NCAA playoff birth, and almost defeated one of the top dozen or so soccer programs in the country.  It was a fantastic season capped off by a fantastic performance by the entire squad.
