Finals day. We knew it was going to be a long day, but we didn't know it was going to be quite so hot. I think the temps were in the high 90's, with very little wind to help cool things off. Brett's demo of the F pattern was to begin at 8:15, but due to fog and/or low cloud cover, it was delayed for a short while. Once the sun burnt the clouds off, we knew we were in for a hot one. I have included pictures of when we first got there. . . it didn't stay that way for long.
Things were definitely up for world class flying . . . I heard comments that this was an extremely talented, tough, group. I'm not sure they don't say that every Worlds. . . I think at this level they are all excellent pilots. I have posted scores of some of the flights, but didn't get them all. Results I copied/pasted from World site.
By now you probably all know what the results are. . . I wouldn't begin to analyze why this or that. I will only say there was some surprise results for some slots; but I'm told that is The Worlds. We had great flying from Quique and Jason; both excellent shows of their talents.
The team landed a Bronze; the most surprising thing about team standings was that Japan did not capture the 1st place as everyone had anticipated with such certainty going into it. The fact that France had two pilots in the finals, one in first and one in tenth, going into it didn't sway that prediction. The fact that France's 10th place moved into 2nd place in the finals (almost unheard of, I'm told) is what switched Japan into the Silver slot, instead of the Gold.
So, as they say, it is what it is. I think everyone enjoyed watching the good flying (while I was trying to get into any shade I could; I wasn't alone!) Everyone agreed you could not take a thing away from Christophe from France: he flew consistently well every single flight.
The flying and results with closing ceremonies did not end until around 6:45. We still had a night ahead of us. We all had to high tail it to the hotel, take a quick shower, and get back into the lobby to meet so we could head right back to Pombal for the banquet. Of course, it was supposed to be e-a-s- y to get to. Just let me say one thing. . .nothing is easy to get to here.
We took the exit we thought was right, and then just drove on that road looking for the 'sports complex' this was to be held in. We drove past what we thought was a civic center and saw a banner for 'aeromodelers' and thought we had made it. Somehow we all found a place to park and then walked to the front of the building, only to find out we were not in the right place at all.
Lucky us. A great guy that had been a marshall of sorts in the competition; the "Mr XXX, Start your engine you are up" guy. . . just happened to be in that area of town at the time we were all gathered. He looked across the street and saw all those crazy Americans and decided he would have to help us out. We then had to walk for about 15 minutes, under a passage that went under the railroad track, over a bridge, through a couple of parking lots, down narrow streets until we actually got to where the banquet was. Who knew? We would have never found it on our own.
Being the spoiled Americans we are, and after being in the hot sun all day, we really thought we were going to be in a nice air conditioned banquet room, all comfy and well fed. Well, the A/C didn't happen. Different culture, you have to roll with the flow. It was a time for the guys to all cut loose and relax for the first time in a long time. It was nice to see them all joking and laughing with so many of the other great flyers from other countries. Onda from Japan seemed to have them laughing a lot. . .as did others.
There were awards given out, some local entertainment and all good things that banquets provide. A speech here, a song there, and just a relaxing time. But we were all tired, that's for sure. We left around midnight I think, and the team left shortly after we did. It was going to be very nice to sleep in on our final full day here in Portugal.
Well, my job is done for the site with this final entry. I hope you've been able to get a glimpse of what it was like here during The Worlds. The support the team felt from home was really quite extraordinary. Please know it was greatly appreciated! I know all team members were honored to represent the USA and that they did their very best for you all. I've also come to realize just how difficult a position Team Manager is and how amazingly well Al carried it out. The details and items he dealt with were unending; you just can't believe what comes up that he and Raiko took care of with efficiency, expediency, and always with the best interest of the team in mind. Next time you see them, please acknowledge their hard work.
I'm off to see the castle that we've been looking at for this two weeks from our hotel. Can't believe it's taken until the last day to get up there, but time has flown by. I will leave Portugal with a gratitude to the kind people, certainly a better knowledge of flying pattern, and memories abundant with people that I met and got to know from the USA that were here to share this event. Thanks for checking in. . . see you at The Worlds in Muncie in 2011!!

Well, the Semi-Finals just seem to step up the level of - tension/excitement/fun/agony/joy - just depends on where you're sitting, I guess. It was a very full day today. Winds go without saying, but didn't seem as windy today as other days. It did seem a bit warmer.
Today. . . more spectators, less flyers. It was all around a good day for the USA; all the guys flew well. I posted the finals for the first picture, because I know that is what everyone wants to know. Quique came in 2nd for his spot, and Jason was right behind him in 5th. These are the guys from the USA that are in the finals. And deservedly so. . .
The heartbreak was Andrew. . who has flown so well every time in this competition. . . missing a place in the finals by less than 2 points; he came in 11th. I don't know much, but if it were a fair world, seems like he would be in the finals. I will leave the conversation on this point to you guys. . .
Brett had a good day and climbed from 17th to 13th; quite an accomplishment at this level I'm told. I think he got in a flight or two that he was happy about, but you'll have to ask him.
I'm told Japan has pretty much wrapped up the Gold with their 3 in the finals. The close race will probably be between USA and France for the Silver. We'll see tomorrow.
I know this is short, but it's been a long day, and tomorrow will be even longer. Brett will fly the demo F pattern first thing at 8:15, and I think Andrew will be flying both unknown demos. Good exposure for both. Finals will be all day, and then we will run back to the hotel to clean up for the banquet tomorrow night. I'm sure I'll manage a few pictures from that.
Today's pictures are scores, planes , and crowd shots mostly. Hope you enjoy. . . won't be comments except maybe a few. Gotta get some sleep to have the steam to go tomorrow.
Later, Cindy

What a long day it was. . . I'm actually writing this Thursday morning; I tried to post last night but the internet had gone down. Sorry for the delay.
USA had a good day today. Jason had a fantastic flight (and was the last flight of the day practically.) Quique had another great flight, as well as Andrew. Brett bought up his game a notch, and scored well also. So, as you can see from the outcome of the prelims, Quique came in as number 3, with Jason (5), Andrew (10) and Brett (17) hanging in there for Team USA.
Andrew started the day off at around noon, with Jason's flight close to 7:00 p.m. It wasn't as windy today; much better flying conditions than yesterday. We did a lot of 'sit and wait' stuff, but found some shade to do it in, so that helped.
The Prelims were all tallied at the end of the competition today, so people were hanging around waiting to see. . The Mayor of Pombal had posted an announcement that he was going to host a 'banquet', so a lot of us stayed around just to see what that would amount to. We stayed until they had put some food on the table, but opted not to stay too long. I think we were walking out as the accordians walked in . . . we might have stayed but it had already been a long day for us.
Thursday will be a 'practice' or 'day of rest' day. Our guys are leaving at 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning with the intent of a full day of practice at the military field. No sightseeing for them. As I understand it, and you all probably already know, tomorrow (Friday) they will each fly two rounds of F. Their total for all the prelims will count as a round, and then they toss out the lowest of the three to determine their place in the semis. Everyone will need to fly well, but Brett will have to really nail it in both rounds to make the finals.
Well, that's it for today. Mike and I are going with the Jeskys and will try to make our way to the coast today; it's not supposed to be too far. If we can just get out of town and on the right road we'll be okay. Last night we got back to the hotel and everyone wanted to go to McDonalds. . . . we were smart enough to call on Andrew to drive us there or we would have NEVER made it, GPS or not. Yes, McDonalds does sound good, even though we never go there in the States.
I'll take Thursday off here, but will be back Friday I'm sure. Until then. . .

Think windy, and that was today! These were not comfortable winds, but winds coming from every which way as the pilots tell it. I would have to call it a frustrating day for at least a couple of our pilots. Brett wasn't happy with his flight and Quique wasn't happy with the judges (although Quique had a great flight). Andrew was steady as she goes and produced another great flight, as well as Jason showing well.
I guess by the end of tomorrow we will know what's happening as far as who makes the semis. Our guys are spread all over the place in times tomorrow. . . I think Andrew is scheduled for 11:59, while Jason is our last flyer at 7:26 p.m. (although I think all flights have run earlier so we think they will be done before then.
I've posted some more planes, tried to get a few crowd shots, and there are lots of score sheets. I don't know if you guys want to see them, but I try to just takes pics of the score sheets with the higher scores.
I think we will get back tomorrow fairly late to the hotel, but I'll try to get something up for you, at least to let you know how our team stands. Chances are the FAI WC site may have posted who made the semis by then.
Promises to be an interesting day tomorrow. Keep the cheers coming from home. . .we can hear you from over here.

Greetings from Portugal! I would have to say it was a pretty good day for Team USA. Everyone had strong flights, although of course they weren't all happy with themselves. Are they ever? I can't really intelligently comment on flights so all I can do is give you my impressions. I have posted a bunch of score sheets of pilots with the better scores.
Quique seemed to be the standout today. I heard a little grumbling from Jason, but I think Andrew and Brett felt pretty good about their flights. Even in these competition days these guys are leaving the World Site and heading out to a practice field. The weather was just a bit cooler today, and it was really calm this morning. Winds came up in the afternoon, but the pilots didn't seem bothered by it, so it must have not been the crazy wind they have experienced some days here.
Smaller crowds today for sure. . . people are back to work so the local crowd thinned considerably. We just sort of went from one 'line' to the next to watch our guys fly.
Really that's all there is today. . .planes and score sheets. It will probably be the same on Tuesday and Wednesday. . . they tell me nothing is real clear until the semis regarding the pecking order. We'll just have to see. Tomorrow our guys all fly between 12:17 and 3:55 according to the schedule. Today, however, things were running as much as 45 minutes early.
Getting done early tonight so I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep. Bye for now. C

Well, the first day is over. Since I'm clueless about the scoring thing, I did get a short lesson from Jason, but I'm probably more confused than ever. Major points I picked up were that these scores are guides at best. What flight line you are on (with what group of judges) makes a difference, and somehow they have a way to average that all out. Sounds like these raw scores are 'raw' for sure. There are 5 judges on each site.
At any rate, I tried to take a photo of score sheets I saw that I thought you would want to see. The scores are being posted faster than we had imagined, so that is good.
Linda (Jesky) and I didn't get to the site until this afternoon, so I'm afraid I only have pics from Brett and Andrew's flight. Tomorrow, we will probably be there for all four of them.
You guys probably always think you could have flown better when you finish a flight; your team here is no exception. Please know I am about clueless when it comes to who had a good or bad flight, but from the comments I would say Andrew had a great day; he was high score on his flight line I believe.
Time to go; gotta get a little shut eye before we're back at the field tomorrow.
Saturday, August 22, 2009
Good day today. The team went to the World Site to get in their one practice round before competition tomorrow. I wasn't there, but sounds like all went well. I think they tried to stop at another practice field on the way back to the hotel to get in one last round, but it was so crowded that it just didn't work out.
They got back to the hotel to clean up for the Opening Ceremonies. We left the hotel at around 4:15, which gave us plenty of time to get there and set up before 6:00. The guys looked great and crowds of locals were already forming when we got there. The team just mingled and took a few group pictures. Don Ramsey, our USA judge, just got in yesterday with his wife Molly, so we were all able to say hi to them.
I've uploaded about 60 pictures I think; most of them tell the story. It was pretty neat to see our guys representing the USA and to have our flag with them. There were typical ceremony things. . . the powers to be had to say their two cents. . . the mayor of Pombal had to have his say (which was then interpreted) . . .and so on. After that, the 'air show' started, which consisted of some parasailers, a full sized acrobatic plane, a few sky divers, some more full size planes (sorry I don't know what kind) and a model jet. The most memorable thing is how and where they flew these planes. They were flying DIRECTLY over the crowd, many times low, and apparently that is okay to do in Portugal. Whew, the FAA would have shot them down over in the States. We were all commenting how if one thing went wrong they would have taken a good part of the spectators out.
After the ceremony, most opted to come back to the hotel. A group of us found out we could order pizza and have it delivered, and that's just what we did. It's the first thing that really tasted like it does in the states. Guess now we can survive the week!!
Well, it's late and tomorrow will be another day. Hope this helped a little for you to feel a part of it all.
2009-08-21
Well, this may be the calm before the storm. . . the guys were our practicing today at the military base again. They put in a long day and then went to see a castle somewhere between the practice field and Leiria. Our friend, the soldier at the military base, put them on to it.
Al went to a Team Manager meeting, so guess he got the low-down on what's going on. As far as I can tell, the guys are one of the last teams to get a practice round (at 12 noon) tomorrow at the World Site. All total, they will have 38 minutes for them to all get on, fly, and get off. After that, I think they have to check in or be processed. . . then they will come back to the hotel. Here they are getting ready for the opening ceremonies tomorrow at 6:00 p.m., again at the World Site.
I'm sure tomorrow is when I will get lots of pictures, so hang in there and I'll see what I can come up with. Andrews parents, Tim and Linda Jesky, got here today and Tim claims he's going to take 50 pictures a day, so maybe I'll be able to grab a couple of his too.
Mike and I, along with the Jeskys, saw more of Portugal then we really wanted to today returning their rental car they used to get here from Lisbon. After we finally got that done, we actually drove over to the Pombal World Site to see what was going on. They are still working away, and there were a lot of town's people there. Anyway, that's how we got the few pictures of the site.
Tonight, they had a team meeting getting all their ducks in a row. They are ready, willing, and VERY able. I will end here tonight because I know tomorrow will be a full schedule and I'll probably be up very late getting it all on the internet. Let's hope that's how it works. . .

Okay, you plane junkies, got just a few pictures today. This morning Mike went with Al and Raiko and was able to get a few shots of the world site in Pombal. Apparently, Al and Raiko said that a LOT had been done in the past couple of days. The time is getting closer!
This afternoon, Mike and I rode with Al and Raiko to the practice site. It's a military base near Tancos (don't hold me to that name). Guess it took us about 40 minutes or so to get there, and the road was 'interesting' on some parts. Don't know how Al ever located it in the first place!
The military personnel there were very nice, and as a matter of fact, one of the soldiers (I'm sorry I didn't get his name and rank now) was taking all kinds of great pictures and then putting them on a laptop slideshow. Turns out he is the President of the local r/c model airplane club. No wonder he was taking so many pictures. . . he has the sickness too. . .
It was fairly hot at the field, and especially out on the runway I'm sure. Humidity was not bad, but then I'm from the Houston area where it's been close to 100 degrees for almost 3 months straight, and really humid.
Sounds like at this point they are going to the same practice site in the morning; I've had my fill, so I will be staying here in the shade where there is a breeze.
Until tomorrow. . .
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Al and Raiko left EARLY this morning to check out a flying practice field; they were successful and with a call back to the team, the guys all loaded up and got under way about 10:00 a.m. Apparently this field is not the easiest to find (nothing seems to be) and so they usually caravan, with the vans with the GPS sort of leading the way. I think one van got a little off track, but they all made it there and spent a long, hot, day flying. Mike and I didn't even attempt going because we were told that even with coordinates we would have a hard time finding it.
We met up with them tonight; Quique and Ryan's room is next door to us, and Quique was busy cooking a spaghetti dinner for the team as we were walking back to our room from our own dinner. From the pictures you can see that they all got a plate, and because our room has a table and chairs, they gathered here to eat.
One story was told of how when they were at this field, the Chinese team drove up in a bus! Really pretty smart of them with the language barrier and the difficulty of finding some of these places. They said several teams were at this site today, so they are leaving early tomorrow to 'get their spot'. In the meantime, Al and Raiko are heading to the Pombal site to see what progress is being made there and if there is anything new that has come up that we could benefit from knowing. I have to tell you no dust is settling under Al and Raiko's shoes; these guys are awesome at predicting every possibility and finding ways to do what is best for the team.
The guys left here all looking pretty tired, but also ready to hit it early tomorrow. You can be proud of how they are doing their very best to represent the USA in this competition.
I'm sorry still no pictures of planes for you (other than the one in the park across from the hotel). The time will come and I will take LOTS of pictures of lots of planes, and hopefully of people you have all heard of or maybe met before from around the world.
Until tomorrow. . . adeus.
Monday, August 17, 2009 (first day here)
We have just arrived today in Lisbon at 8:00 a.m., and managed to go through the airport, rent a car (don't ask what it cost to insure a car here through the rental agcy., which is what you get stuck doing), pick up a few euros, and head to Leiria. The town we are staying at is probably about an hour and on half drive from Lisbon, mostly good roads. They love their toll roads around here. . .I think we were on it for about an hour, and it cost us around $12. US dollars.
Once we got off the toll road, I was VERY happy I made the last minute purchase of a GPS navigator; you can't believe the narrow, windy, roads. Even when we got to the hotel, we had no clue where to park to check in. Not like the U.S. where you drive up in the drive by the front door. We circled around a few times and finally just went into the nearby parking garage, which was lucky because it happened to be the parking garage for the hotel.
We got up to our room, and thought the electricity was out. . .no lights, no nothing. Just about then, Al and Raiko showed up and let us in on the secret. . . you have to place your room card into a card holder that is on the wall in the room as you walk in; that will then turn on the electricity for you. Apparently this is a 'green' hotel, so they don't want/won't allow anything to be on while you are not in the room. We have a suite I guess you would call it; two rooms, one the bedroom and the other a living room with a nice little kitchenette in it. I'll take pictures sometime soon and post so you can see. Nothing fancy, but functional.
The guys are hard at it on the practice field. They have been able to use the actual site in Pombal where the Worlds will be held up to now, but tomorrow will be scouting out someplace else as the Pombal site will be off limits as they ready it for the competition. Navigating around is the hard part of finding a site, so Al and Raiko are heading out early tomorrow and will call back to let the guys know where to come. Phones aren't working a lot of the time, so communication with each other is challenging; but they are working it out.
That's all for now. Ready to sleep here by 11:00 p.m., which is only 5:00 p.m. in Texas; the trip over and getting ready for it was pretty exhausting, so maybe we'll get a good night's sleep and adjust to Portugal time.
8/27/2009 11:36:26 AM - 001072519141
Allan, you can bet I will get the story of the gorilla suit. . . We are having fun with the Jeskys; lots of laughs!

Kevin, we have all admired Quique's case SO much. It's just beautiful and we know he cherishes it. On the pictures I posted on 8/19/2009 I took a picture of the front and back of the case and posted them. . . a true work of art.
