Our first match will start at 9am on Friday in Hall B on Court 16 against Choo Choo 14 Black.
The team went 8-1 (16-4 in sets) to win the Bronze Bracket of the Shamrock Festival 14s Division. With injuries to the team's roster, Inferno has been working hard to learn and to adapt to a different offensive scheme and dealing with players in new positions. The ladies started the tournament with their usual up and down play during their first pool tying for 1st with CUVC 14 Psyclones and SC Midlands 14 Performance (all with a 2-1 record) but were relegated to the lower bracket because of set win %.
Team Inferno seemed to have "cooled" off after having been awarded the 3rd place finish in that morning's pool and came out flat against a younger Clash 13 Black team. Although the team won the match in two sets, the team was not satisfied with their sloppy play and losing the lead a couple of times during the match. Comments such as, "We don't belong in this pool," and "We're better than this," can be heard within the post match huddle. In an attempt to light a fire under Team Inferno, the coaches challenged the team to PROVE they didn't belong in the lower half by winning out the rest of the tournament. At this point the team had a break in play and decided to have a players' team meeting.
The meeting proved to be what the team needed. Team Inferno began to "heat" up and rolled over an inexperienced NETVC 14 Red (25-9, 25-15). The players were notably more focused and communication seemed to be the key. The ladies were observed to talk more...but not only during game play but in between points planning their mode of attack. Plays named "Bieber", "Ralph", and "Cross" can be heard called out by setter Jordan Martin throughout the match and subsequently, through the rest of the tournament. Team Inferno secured first place in their second pool by winning their last match against HOV 14 Red in two sets (25-23, 25-16). The win put them in a good position for the Bronze Bracket playoffs with a first round bye.
The team's first match of the Bronze Bracket proved to be challenging but Inferno took care of business and eliminated CUVC 14 Lightning in two sets (25-20,25-20). Inferno's next match faced a familiar SWVJ 14 Blue whom the team defeated earlier in their first pool of the tournament. But the team immediately noticed this wasn't the same SWJV team they played earlier. SWJV seemed to play with more intensity and appeared to have a chip on their shoulder about the result of the two teams' earlier meeting. Inferno struggled to keep control of the match with missed serves and shanked passes but managed to win the first set (25-20). Inferno's miscues and unforced errors carried over into the second set which SWJV took advantage of. The ladies' of SWJV were able to rattle the Inferno players with their trash talking and secured a third set with a win in the second set (22-25). With the echos of their coaches' challenge still fresh on their minds, Team Inferno was not ready to bow out of the tournament, especially not to a team they had previously beaten. The trash talking by SWJV seemed to work against themelves in the third set as it fueled a fire within Team Inferno.
With the crowd standing firmly behind them cheering loudly (although a few of the cheers may have been due to VCU winning their way into the Final Four), the Inferno ladies were able to regroup and jumped to an early lead utilizing their best skills to regain control of the match. With laser beam serves from Miranda Hall (DS) and Rebecca Hoover (OH), strong hitting from Melanie Snyder (OH), accurate passing and digging from Lauren Bashada (L), agressive net play by Rachel Gaston (MB), Becca Lass (MB), and Kayla Sell (RS), and precise play calling by Jordan Martin (S) the team was able to win the match with a convincing third set win (15-7).
The Championship match proved to be a bit anti-climactic as Team Inferno easily defeated a young SC Midlands 13 Performance team (25-11, 25-10). Congratulations ladies!
