5000 Bricks - Lego Keychain Removal
Lego keychains are minifigures that have a keyring inserted through their head. They are just like regular minifigs (some even have double-sided heads!). These are cool as keychains , but they are also a good way to get rare minifigs (anakin , leia) for a low price ($5). There are many , many ways you can remove these and because they are all online , they must be true! Well , not realy. I have only found 2 methods succesful. One of which damaged the hair. The first method everyone has tried , force (strength , not THE force), does not work , unless the Hulk is your dad. I tried a collection of methods on Leia. Her hair was a bit damaged through the trials , but it is still cool. No method of pulling and candle heat could make the metal it work. Finally , my dad used a hammer to remove the keyring top. Later , when removing Anakin's keyring , my dad touched the tip of metal in Leia's head with the soldering iron and removed it.
DO THIS FIRST!
Some methods are better than others....
Anakin doesn't seem too happy about my sticking a soldering iron in his head!
You can Paint over the Metal
Don't even try this or using strength. It just scratches the minifig hair.
(Please note that the scratches are from other methods , not the soldering iron)
Even has Double-Sided Head!
First thing you need to do , whatever method (except the soldering iron), requires removing the keyring loop. Then choose your method. PULLING: Well , pull the keyring after you put in a paperclip. Doesn't realy work for me but whatever floats your goat. SAWING IT OFF: As simple as it comes , saw the thing off! You do it to the point that it is flat on the head. Then you can paint over it. if you don't like it you can touch it with a soldering iron for a few seconds and then remove the head and then the rest of the keyring. SOLDERING IRON : THIS METHOD WORKS! I found this on http://thebrickblogger.com/ but I tried replacing it with a candle but that didn't work. WITH THIS METHOD YOU CAN KEEP THE ENTIRE KEYRING ON. All you have to do is touch the keyring with the soldering iron and have somebody pull the minifig while you hold the soldering iron. This removes it and doesn't melt the plastic. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT TOUCH THE PLASTIC WITH THE SOLDERING IRON BECAUSE IT WILL MELT THE PLASTIC. My dad did use the iron to do some repairs to the scratched platic , but I don't recommend it. ALL KEYCHAIN REMOVAL METHODS LEAVE A HOLE IN THE HEAD UNLESS YOU FILL IT. You can use play-doh and my mom suggested wood-filling but I don't know about that one. Now you can see my other funny pics and failures!
Sorry for the video quality , my camera was out of focus...

Dude, Admin was right!!! Your pics are really funny!!!!!! LOL!!! (seriously!!!) As for the video quality, who cares??? The light can sometimes mess it up.
The one on the left is the keyring that was in Leia's head . The top of it was chopped of but still removable with a soldering iron! The one on the right is Anakin's.
