Welcome to the A Btry 2/2 ADA Improved HAWK Missile (web) Site!

This is the U. S. Army's A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillary Improved HAWK missile site as it was from the mid 70's to the early 80's.  It was located near Annerod, (West) Germany in an area known as "The Hohe Warte". The headquarters and barracks were located at The Depot in Giessen.  Many photos, videos and comments have been provided by A Btry 2/2 Hawkers. Visit regularly to see what's new.  Hopefully new visitors will rediscover old A 2/2 friends that they may have lost contact with many years ago.   Blazing Skies!  Webmaster is Larry Hicks (larry@gloryroad.net).

Larry Hicks - Doing a site survey in 1977.  Had to carry that stick with the clip and test paper on the end of it.   I was the ABC person.  A kind of dorky job...  but required.  Especially when we were being evaluated.  The paper on the end of the stick was pretty sensitive to changes in the air and what was in it.  If that paper changed color I would start shouting "Gas Mask!".   We were always ahead of the site equipment.   This photo is the property of Larry Hicks and it can be reprinted by contacting him for permission.

A 2/2 ADA 2007 Old Patriot Area.jpg
A 2/2 ADA 2007 Old Patriot Area.jpg
The A 2/2 ADA HAWK Site was gone forever. In 1984 it became Patriot.  The 3rd Bn,  4th ADA was created and it was the first Patriot site in Europe. It was then "reflagged" and named 3 Bn, 43rd  ADA a short time later.  I think it all went directly to Tel Aviv, Israel (During Desert Storm) from this site in early 91 and was set up to engage SCUDs. It was a one way trip.  In the spring of 1992 the empty site's security was stopped.  It was then abandoned. The area then fell into ruins and was taken over by (German) Federal Assets Management.  The Germans call the area (that included our old missile site) The Hohe Warte. It was declared a nature reserve.  In 1997 the U.S. wanted to use it again and started doing other types of training in this area. This photo (2007) is showing the B IHPIR hill on the right.  The left part of radar hill is now missing. This building (which is now rubble on Gordon's 2010 video) replaced that area. It was once a hill that a Improved Hawk "A" IHPIR, ICWAR, ROR and IPAR used.   What a mess it was.  In 2012 this area was cleaned and restored to a "grazing preserve" enviorment that is now used for Hellabrunn wild horses.

The two and three-year-old Przewalski mares from Hellabrunn and the seven-year-old mare from Stuttgart are now getting used to living in a completely natural environment on the Hohe Warte that now includes the old Hawk / Patriot TAC Site with only minimal human intervention. This, along with the creation and preservation of important nature conservation areas such as Hohe Warte, are the key objectives of the Przewalski horse grazing project.

Hawk In Desert Storm (Wayne Mineard Pic)

2012 - Pat Brey and Eldon Regua

Lt. Pat Brey served in A Btry from 78-80 or so...
Pat Brey is now CEO/President of Boeckeler in Tucson, AZ.
He and Eldon Regua got together in San Jose at the end of April.

2011 - MG Regua at Fort Sill

The Air Defense Center and School is now at Fort Sill, OK. The Army now calls it the Fires Center of Excellence as it has merged it with the Field Artillery Center...I was visiting one of my group commands at a new Army Reserve Center also on Fort Sill.

Why the 4/43 Patriot Btry left our old Tac Site location in 1991 and never returned.

During DESERT Storm, the 10th ADA Brigade from Germany commanded a task force which included Dutch, US and Israeli Patriot batteries in defense of Tel Aviv and Haifa. ADA lieutenants were debriefed at the Israeli Defense Forces "Pentagon" after each Scud attack. Within twenty nine hours of "wheels up" for the first aircraft, the TF 4-43 ADA was operational in Israel in two locations.

Another link with the wording a little different:

During DESERT STORM, ADA was involved everywhere, from defending critical assets and activities in the divisions and corps to defending critical assets in Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey. 10th ADA Brigade from Germany commanded a task force which included Dutch, US and Israeli Patriot batteries in defense of Tel Aviv and Haifa. ADA lieutenants were debriefed at the Israeli Defense Forces "Pentagon" after each Scud attack. As their dependents celebrated Christmas, the soldiers and officers of Task Force 4-43 ADA began loading aircraft at three different locations in Germany. Within twenty nine hours of "wheels up" for the first aircraft, the TF 4-43 ADA was operational in Israel in two locations.

TF 4-7 ADA (Patriot) deployed from Germany to Incirlik Turkey where they provided ADA protection to critical assets poised at Iraq's "back door". TF 2-43 ADA (Patriot) deployed from Germany & was attached to 11th ADA Brigade, providing Scud defense of King Khalid Military City in Saudi Arabia. TF 8-43 ADA (Patriot) deployed from Germany and provided general support to VII Corps.

When it was over the 4th Bn, 43rd ADA  went to Fort Bliss and not back to Germany.  The Tac Site perimiter was guarded for an additional year after the equipment left then abandoned.

Our Missile Site after Hawk

This is a link to a German website that provides a lot of information and pictures. It explains what happened to our Tac Site after HAWK. The area that includes our old missile site is known as the Hohe Warte by the Germans. Go to Google then paste in the following link in the search field:

Now select the first listed link..... Click on translate (in the top right) to see it in English.

This is another video of the old TAC site in ruins.  The following comments were with the video and were translated from German:   -

On 5 August 1982 was inaugurated on the first Patriot Hohenwarte position in Europe as a step in the conventionalization of air defense by the then defense minister. The total cost of construction under the leadership of the State Building Authority at that time amounted to over 8 million DM, the fourth battalion of the 43rd Air Defense Artillery was waiting on the high in March 1985, finally, the first operational Patriot unit within the U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR). In 1984, the Federal Republic of Germany decided to modernize its air defense system. The plan had 28 units with a total of 1,600 missiles, should additional sets of twelve U.S. army soldiers are serving. In December 1986, the first Patriot missiles were handed over to the Bundeswehr.

The fire unit on the Hohenwarte with nine open underground bunkers, radar equipment, crew quarters and transformer equipment was located right on the summit. In an area located below the building were to monitor the airspace for the purpose of monitoring the safety and operational readiness of the fire unit.

In 2006 2 young men did a video on the TACsite before all the Patriot buildings were leveled.  It was all abandoned.  Gates were open.  Just walk in.   This is the Youtube info about it:

A short film about the true meaning of friendship. A silent journey of two young men through devastated urban surroundings, discovering their environment on a skateboard. Very impressing from a cinematographic point of view the film contrasts nature and the remains of a former US army base. (Words by Arlo Ibisch) 22. Oktober 2006

I am really amazed at the entrepreneurial skills of some people. Someone or some company is selling the graffiti prints/photos of what was sprayed on the old Patriot buildings that once existed on our old TAC Site.   Click HERE

Hey Barry..do you remember the small "cafe" behind our barricks during AIT at Ft. Bliss.."Judy's Place"..the taxi cabs would line up there?

Added a current picture of Pat Brey with Eldon Regua.

Wayne you would be correct sir it was during AIT training, tried to tell my son about that training and how the Army would go over the same thing again, again, and again to the point of being crazy. but it made sure you knew your job.
5/2/2012 5:03:31 AM - 002097756136
Barry, I assume you are talking about the chow hall in AIT at Bliss. It was sure a BIG change from Basic Training. We did have a cat for a short while in the M & S bldg. I remember coming in one day and it had a mouse on a chair toying with it for an hour. It eventually went away. The only sheep "mowers" I remember were down on depot. Don't remember them on the Tac Site. Yes, glad Gordon did the videos when he did. Looks like any remnants of the site will be, or already are, gone.
4/24/2012 10:53:12 PM - 003026746821
Gen. Regua
When you mentioned Fort Bliss, it brought back great memories of the chow there some of the best I ever had in military, it was not uncommon to have steak (great) and on Fridays’ seafood. In fact I didn’t mind the daily 5 mile runs.
I don’t recall any cats on the site but by the time Barney left I was getting short and did not care about to much other than getting out alive.

Larry I do not remember the shepherd and sheep cutting the grass, what I recall was several of us with sling blades. In fact in 77’ I got into a heated discussion with one of the officers (private) where I told him the only thing the Capt. Wanted was his tac site to look like a golf course so he could get his next gold star (not rank) brownie points.

Do any of you go on the Samaria Gorge trip in Crete, it was either 77’ or 78’. I still remember trying to catch a small brown snake that we found on the trail and then when we got to the beach first time I ever saw a yellow sea snake what a TRIP we had.
4/18/2012 1:04:39 PM - 000044828457

Gordon,
This is Unbelievable. Your videos of the site in 2010 were done just in time before this big change. You could not have timed it better. This has brought back memories of a picture I took of the TAC Site with sheep grazing on it in 1976. I need to locate it. Instead of us mowing the radar hills and the launch areas.. The shepherd and his sheep were allowed in the gate to "mow" once or twice while I was there.

Guess what! I found Gordon's article online and had it translated to English by google.

  Solarpark-fuer-Bundeswehr-Depot-im-Gespraech

Also click on Photo Gallery: Giessen military sites past and present in the online article... the 2nd picture of the site in 2004 really shows how it was laid out for Patriot.

I am sure that they are cleaning up the old site area so it will return to nature quickly and so that the horses will not step on anything that can hurt them.

This is a great article on the horses...

Przewalski horses have been resettled in a 23-hectare enclosure at the Hohe Warte near Gießen

Thanks again Gordon!

Well guys...  What do you think?

4/18/2012 3:00:43 AM - 003026755949
Well Larry they finally decided the fate of our old Tac Site, I will send you the clipping from the Giessen newspaper. It will be turned into a solarpark with all of that hill and including the area that was the German army site at the bottom of the hill (Stuben Kaserne?) being reclaimed for nature (ripping out all the concrete) to include sheep grazing and a wild horse park. I'm pretty sure it will be open to the public for hiking, good thing I got up there with the video camera when I did, the photo and article show the very last graffitied wall as they have rased the rest already and I have seen articles in German showing that they have already populated the area with an endangered horse species just this year. You can google Hohe Warte Wikipedia and follow the links at the bottom of that article to get a look at the horses. Could not find the photo series that is mentioned at the end of the article.

Hi Billy, enjoyed the "Ready Bay" comments. Recall walking thru the Ready Bay from the one-bed TCO office and hearing all the shouting during card(crazy eight?) games. I ended up taking two of the Tac Site cats home and eventually gave to LTC Jim and Velma Sprouse in early '80. Jim was the Battalion Commander from '78-'80, and he and Velma kept both cats for almost twenty years. He shared this with me as we had lunch a few years ago at the Fort Bliss Officer's Club where he retired in the El Paso area as a Colonel.
3/17/2012 7:37:11 AM - 002097953401
The "Ready Bay"..after all the years, I never forgot..the bunks. After the 3-4 years we all served on the Tac Site..were those dirty "mattress". I can't recall seeing any bunk with " sheets and pillows". When we changed "manning crews", we simply walked into "Rready Bay"..picked a bunk...flipped the mattress over..dumped the dirt on floor...which they had just "buffed". I remember we'd bring a blanket..during winter. Everyone slept fully clothed..with boots on. Looking back, we never really "slept"...all night long we were releiving each other. I recall using our field jackets and parkas...for pillows..another passing thought...guys. Not to mention "Barney"..running up and down, the "Ready Bay" going nuts! HA!
3/7/2012 5:32:38 PM - 000044828457
Billy...... I am glad that you didn't share some of those details while we were still on the site. I really liked tea too. It did taste different... Now I know why.  Yeah...   And I got the getting hungry part..
3/4/2012 12:25:27 AM - 002097953401
Hi guys..I'm on a roll. Barry mentioned our cooks. Made me remember one, that I can still recall..Burton. He was something else. I think the cooks were assigned to HQ Battery..not sure. They all serverd under Mess Sgt., on our Depot Mess Hall. I'll try to make long story short. Burton, was alright...he would come over to our barracks...drank beer and party, with us. While on "manning", I did a lot of "chow truck" driving. Burton, was assgined as one of our Tac Site cooks. Anyway...once in awhile, I'd be pulling "manning" with LT. Fugal as TCO. He was alright...but sure enjoyed his food. I'd leave Tac Site ..report to Depot Mess Hall..pick up food and Burton. We would take the "trail thru woods"..which we have pictures of, need I say more. Rather a "bumby ride"! I would assist Burton in Tac Site , mess hall. Surly someone remembers this....the "manning crew" would be in line, ready to be served. LT. Fugal, would stroll out of the "TCO Office", go to front of line, and sample taste food. If not to his likeing..he would have Mess Sgt. on Depot re-cook. I must say..after two trips..."thru the woods"...Burton and I were getting hungry ourselves! BTW...Burton was bad about forgetting "forks and spoons" and stuff. He would "roll up" his shirt sleeve...stick his arm in beverage container...to stir up sugar..because he forgot. True story.....

3/2/2012 3:35:08 PM - 000044828457
Barry, Glad to hear that you are back in the groove. I didn't arrive on the site until June of 76. If you have any pictures that you would like to share during that time... I will be glad to post them. The "drink" machine was on the 2nd floor just to the right of the stairwell landing as you come up from the main entrance into the building.
3/2/2012 6:01:09 AM - 003026746821
Thanks for the well wishes! It must have worked as I am back in the gym and feeling good.

Maj. Gen. Regua, Sir: I got into A2/2 in Oct. ‘75 and in the short time that I served with you, you taught me more about the TCA position and responsibilities that came with it, then all the Sgt. and Lt. before you. As to our past score from NAMFI, back in ’76, it was so good that Capt. Roe gave us a missile going-away party (all the drinks for free!!) at the NCO club on Crete. Funny scene on the flight back from Crete, we were informed that for anyone who ventured to the red zone (off limits) needed to understand that there was a 78% STD rate on the island. You should have seen all the enlistees talking with each other to see who was going to get tested first.

Larry, I’m not sure if my pain is because I’m getting older or if what I did in my youth (lots of sports - football, baseball, volleyball, surfing, etc.). As I heard once in the past, it’s not the age, it’s the mileage. You are correct about the old canvass covers back in ’75 and ’76. Damn hardcovers didn’t come in until winter of ’77, but they were a God send. Also, when did the beer machine come into the barracks and where were they located?

Billy, yes, I do remember Capt. Roe, he was an easy Capt. However, our first Sgt. (Top) is the one you needed to remember. He was one strict SOB! He didn’t have too much patience for excuses or how something couldn’t get done. Capt. Roe and Top were only there about 6 – 8 months before Capt. Trice and a new Top. Capt. Trice was much more gung ho - I remember thinking who would take millions of dollars in equipment and haul it all around Germany for 3 or 4 months at a time. Only a crazy person!

But remember how good the chow was in the field? The cooks did a great job!
2/29/2012 2:30:28 PM - 000044828457

Billy ...  The Alpine club was to the left as you come out of the gate.... Just walk up the street a 1/4 mile and it was on the left.  The building behind Charlie Battery is the Apline Club.  It was fenced off so you couldn't get to it from inside the Depot.  This made it accessable to people on the outside that couldn't have access to the Depot. The other place (that you are thinking about) was the Woodland Club.  It was to the left of the gate about 500 feet and across the street.  The NCO club moved from the Woodland Club to The Alpine Club in 1976.   The Woodland club was then open to everyone.  The Woodland Club would have live bands and serve great food. It was a great place to meet people. I enjoyed going to both places.

I like this current German description of the Woodland Club....

Woodland Club - Former US-Army club where German girls found their American husbands

2/29/2012 8:14:14 AM - 002097953401
After viewing Alpine Club video, wasn't it across street from Depot main gate? I recall going in there, maybe twice, the whole time I was there. During our time I thought it was the NCO club...but they allowed lower enlisted guys in there also. Which made me remember this...the post enlisted club (lower ranks) I think it was in a building, behind "Charlie Battery" barracks. Would'nt much to it..pizza; sandwiches; beer. Almost forgot...Pam...she was enlisted worked part time, taking food orders. To remember her after all these years...wow!! Think I had crush on her!! So did half of "Charlie and Alpha Battery". Who said getting older, you're mind starts to slip..think not!! HA

Billy! I hope all is going well with you.

All.... Do you remember the beer machines in the barracks? Who would want German beer when you could drink Schlitz, Black Label, Miller, Bud and other fine American beers. The machines would be almost empty but it would always still have Black Label.  It was the last to sell.  Didn't drink much American beer after the first month in Germany.  I had Giessener Beer in my fridge after that. A cool one after a hot day on the site was really something.
2/20/2012 1:45:31 AM - 002097953401
Hi Guys..Hope everyone doing well. Barry..wishing you the best and speedy recovery. Maj. Gen. Regua...I was six months "short" when you arrived to the battery. Yes, we had a few "squared away" TCO's. I mostly pulled "manning" with LT. Funk and LT. Sers. There was also LT's Hirsch, Smith and Fugal. Hey..anybody remember CPT. Carl G. Roe? He was releived by CPT. Trice. The barracks video..what a blast. Other than water coolers in hallways change of room paint, looked the same to me. He even walked past my old room on 1st. Floor, to the right of main stair case. Hey...anyone remember the "towel under the door" routine? Well..lets not go there! Later!!
2/16/2012 2:21:19 PM - 000044828457
Barry, Great to hear from you.... I hope the back pain is smoothing out now that you have had that procedure done. Getting older has its price sometimes. I like getting older. Great to also hear from Maj Gen Regua. I think that it was the Feb of 77 Eval score that was very high and I remember that it was something that everyone talked about. I am going to pull out some of my old Crete papers and hope that I will find something out about the score in my notes. SGT Wilbur and I did the launcher prep checks that year. SP5 Steve Reed and PFC Ken Havens were on the IHIPIR with Mr. Satig. SSGT White was on the IPAR. Not sure about the ICWAR and launcher team responsibilities. SP4 Grady pushed the button...

The winter weather on the old TAC Site has been brutal this year.... Record lows. We all would have almost froze if it had been back in 1976-77 before the domes were introduced. Checking launchers would have been very painful anyway.....
2/15/2012 5:00:09 PM - 000020504991
Hi Barry, I trust you are healing well from your surgery. I didn't get to A/2/2 until October 1977, during an AAFCE Tac Eval, what a shock for this young 2LT who couldn't even spell BCC...I don't recall any of the earlier SNAP scores from NAMFI but sure they were good with TCOs like 1LT Lance Feero and 1LT Funk(sp).
2/14/2012 11:47:58 PM - 003026746821
Wow how time flies when you’re busy with life, just had some minor back surgery (just a shot into the S-1 & S-2 vertebrate). For starters Merry Christmas, Happy New Years and with President Day coming up I get another day off with pay.
I should be taken my exam for my structural steel and high strength bolting within 30 day and I will have another reason why the County does not want to get rid of me besides my quick wit and good looks.
That was a cool video of the barracks I was first put into a four man room and later changed to a two man room where I bunked with Gordon by that time Gordon had gotten married so I had the room to myself for the last 6 months of duty.
Maj. Gen Regua where you in Germany during the 76’ Crete firing? Congratulation on the 79’ 93.4 score I think we were up to that score in 76’ maybe a little higher. Anyway see you guys later.

Hey Larry and all, just checking in. That video of the guy who broke into the old barracks was great. I have thought of hopping the fence myself but no need now. Anyway life is good, praise God, having to travel to various podunks around America sizing up outdoor cabinet retrofits for telecom thankfully it's a mild winter, keeping me busy but glad to be working for sure.

MG Regua..congratulations! Wow..you sure have come a long way, from an A2/2 (TCO)..one of the guys...to the responsibility you have now in Korea. You know, the way it's heading there, one day you might need to brush-up, on the ol' "Hawk ADA" procedures. Be safe..General!! Hey Gordon..whats up? Good to hear trip went well. I would really like to see Klien Linden again. Think I'll talk Mike into making a trip back!! Make it a party!! Believe it or not, we would miss the city bus sometimes, and walk all the way from Klien Linden to Depot (barracks), make it to "mess hall" for breakfast. Jump on "troop truck" behind barracks, head to the "hill" for manning. Trust me, that was a walk!!
12/2/2011 3:15:44 PM - 003026755949

Hey Larry and all,

Trip went good. The wife wanted to see her folks so I told her it ain't a vacation, no hotels, no rental car. Just kickit around Giessen (and drink her dad's booze). My German is actually better though I never got the genders right. A total mystery having a language with perfect rules and then zero rules on three gender choices which alter every sentence plus reverse gender when you say something belongs to someone. I just let'er rip and my father in law and I get along fine. I showed Ralph the site and we watched some of your videos of Namfi launches where he worked for many years. Fun stuff. He looks about 70ish and told me that he tried getting in as an aviator but had an eye issue. Tried enlisting but they said he had a bad heart. I asked him which war. Was it Vietnam or Korea?  He said no....  It was WW2.. I'm 91 years old.  Floored me.  You would never know.  Great guy who traveled the world for Northrup with this drone program.

Where is Gordon? I hope his Germany trip went well.

MG Regua, I hope all is well and that you had a nice Thanksgiving.. Great to hear from you.  Visiting Osan would be interesting.  I bet the latest rev of HAWK is really "Improved" now.
11/19/2011 4:35:12 AM - 000020504991
Hey Hawkers, I want to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving. I recall in '79 when I was the Firing TCO per Gordon's posting, "1 in 3" drones, believe we got the driver that summer. The techs weren't too happy with me and commented as such. We missed honor battery by a few safeties, 93.4...I am now in Korea as (Wartime) Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff, Eighth US Army, Yongsan. I am told that the South Korean (ROK) Army has Hawk around Osan Air Base. I hope to get there sometime next year and visit. Cheers...

The US Army just tested a Missile that can go Hypersonic at Mach 5...

Barry..I forgot about that fellow, until you mentioned it. Yea, you're right, that happened on the 3rd floor. Can't remember name or face. I recall guys in barracks, talking to him, trying to help..he just couldn't adjust to the situation we all had to deal with. The 3rd floor...lot of bad things went on there. Things that can't be repeated here. Long three years...for sure..made us all close.

Found a nice German Patriot Missile website with lots of pictures:

Billy, In some ways I miss all you guys and the s_it we went through. In some ways I feel it made us closer.  Do you remember the dude that cut his wrist on the 3rd floor?  I think he was a 31 Lima. The only thing he wanted was out and they screwed with him until he did that..   Not cool.

Barry..well said!

Hi guys. Been a while since I was here last. So Gordon, that's the little bird that I blew out of the sky back in 78'. I always thought that it was a remote T-4 trainer that was out of service that we were blowing up. I was wrong. I do recall you telling me about the guys who were in charge of the drone's. Larry, for all of us...what a great job you have done with the site. I only wish some of the other guys would visit more and give up details and pix of thier time there.
10/9/2011 8:52:22 PM - 000044828457
The TAC Sites "History"..... Hawk / Conventional Hawk 1963 - 1975, Improved Hawk 1975/6 to 1983/4, Patriot - Nov 1984 to 1991/2. Gate secured and TAC Site area guarded (but almost empty) til 1994.  Was abandoned in 1994 (gate left open). Some demolition (explosives) training was done in the 90's- 00's on the old Patriot buildings.
10/9/2011 6:58:25 AM - 002097953401
If A/2/2 Tac Site, was the first Patriot missile site in West Germany, this being many years ago, it's possible Gordon's videos, may have recorded, by chance , their past history, along with ours. I surf around alot. No where can I find pics. of Patriot, after we left. Hey Gordon..wow..you may have recorded over three decades, of history!
10/4/2011 3:33:50 AM - 003026755949
Larry, thanks much turned out great, I will show Ralph. Great moments in the family when sons and daughters get married, some of the best days I experienced were those, for sure.
10/3/2011 2:59:24 AM - 000044828457
Hey Gordon! Nice pics! I will be updating the site soon. I have several updates. My wife and I have been busy a bit. We have been getting ready for a wedding. My youngest son just got married yesterday (Oct 1st). We had the rehearsal dinner at our home and it took weeks to get it ready.  Was very nice.
10/2/2011 1:12:45 AM - 003026755949
Hey all, Larry I sent you three emails with photos and PDFs of the Namfi drones that were active during our tour, Ralph Friesen and old friend of mine from Church was a civilian contractor there 1972-79, married a local gal from Channia (Olga) there great people, anyway he was manager of the Northrup drone target program. Did not hear back from you but I bet your busy, or let me know if somehow you did not receive. Love to get that stuff posted so we can see 'the enemy'.
9/19/2011 2:24:00 AM - 000044828457
I was young and didn't really realize what a time I was having here until later. 1977 was the big NAMFI performance. We did very well. Was a very good score. Everything just went our way.
9/17/2011 7:54:40 AM - 002097953401
Forgot to ask..which "Snap Crew" shot the best score in Crete..77 or 78?
9/17/2011 7:16:19 AM - 002097953401
Hi guys!! Hope everyone is doing well. Thought I'd look at our pics. and check out the videos again. Memory lane...did we have a blast or what ? You know, looking back, it's amazing the responsibility each of us had..heck..we were kids. Imagine all those years we served together on that Tac Site, with uncountable "ORE's". No matter your MOS...during an "ORE", I remember when the radar operator had "target lock"...TCO...would confirm to "fire". If just one of us "screwed" up...it would have been "missile away" for real. We would have made "head line news" around the world!! Anyway...passing thought....Gordon, welcome back...you're the man. Siggy...thanks for the mail..take care guys!!!
8/11/2011 11:51:02 AM - 000044828457
Hey Gordon.... Wow...   India.  I bet that was a trip.     It doesn't seem like it's been almost a year since you went to the old TAC Site and brought back those great videos.
8/9/2011 2:12:31 AM - 003026755949
Hey guys, been absent awhile pursuing my idealistic crusades to bring Christ to the world (India), actually we had either the first female soldiers to enter combat arms or to enter it in Germany as I recall, there was one Echo and one Delta in 1978 just about half a year before I left, lots of tears those first few weeks but I think they got along. I don't remember us making any changes since for the most part we all bunked in a ready state in the ready bay, could be wrong about that. One of the old guys at my church met his wife, a Greek, in Chania he worked for General Dynamics or Raytheon can't remember which, his job was..guess what.. launching drones for hawks to shoot down, we never saw the guys who launched the drones and he said he never saw the hawk site, we both pulled out our pictures and I showed him this site, maybe I can get him to scan a few of him and the drones. Small world. Siggy, awesome glad to hear about your recovery.
8/3/2011 2:11:12 PM - 000044828457
Barry! Glad to hear from you again..... I hope Ken can find more pictures. They are very interesting to look at. I was 10 years old when he was first on the site.

I think we had something on display (It may have been a trophy) for our great 1977 performance when we went to the NAMFI on Crete. I remember that you were at the top of your game.
8/3/2011 2:50:59 AM - 003026746821
Hi gang been a long time since I’ve been on the site I don’t know I like the new pix from Ken, so thanks dude. Larry I notice that they won a trophy for the best unit performance. Did we not get something like that with the 77’ snap crew? I know that we had a score in the upper 90’s. Billy I will respond to your e-mail also Siggy edit your site status with new e-mail hope everyone is doing Great. Billy, Bruce promised that he was going to get a computer do you know if he did? Maj. Gen. Regua, that's not fair we didn't have any female soldiers when we were there. My only question did any of them beat my target transfer time (4 sec.) between targets.
7/21/2011 10:58:33 PM - 000020504991
Yes, A/2/2 had some 16D and 16E female Soldiers and in 1980 came along 2LT Sheila Bartley, TCO...
7/17/2011 12:33:39 AM - 002097953401
I noticed in MG Regua pics of 1979, of the btry. group pics, there were a small group of "female hawkers". Most of us were back in the states, during this period. Were they on the "Tac Site" ? If so...what changes did they make to the "Ready Bay"...it wasn'nt that big. You know, I would'nt want CQ. duty back in the barracks!!
7/5/2011 1:17:51 PM - 000044828457
The old barracks did have a lot of history. the Germans really built them solid. I remember almost falling off that slick slate roof while trying to install an UHF antenna for "AFN". It would have been a long fall if I had. BTW.... I added a live Pic Cam that shows the Lighthouse at the Chania harbor, on Crete near NAMFI. Select the Live cams tab at the top of the page and scroll down.

Happy Birthday America !
6/12/2011 12:42:33 AM - 002097953401
First..Ken..thanks for the pics! I had no idea just how far back the Tac Site went back. You and Larry have really been doing some history. Back on Depot...I often wondered if during WW2, the German soldiers occupied (A;C;HHQ) barricks. I was told they did. In Ken's pics and ours, not much change. Anyone remember this....."A" Btry. Barricks...1st and 2nd flrs., along the hallways, were recessed (in the walls) rifle racks. Also...in our basement there were "sealed" passgage ways. Never thought much of it then...do now...
6/10/2011 12:34:47 PM - 000044828457
Ken Terranova tells me that our site was about 3 years old when he arrived on it in 1966. I am thinking the site was created in early 1963. Things were very shaky back then in Europe with the "Iron Curtain". This puts the TAC site's creation at a time in history that was less than a year after the Cuban Missile Crisis and less than a year before President Kennedy's assassination.
6/8/2011 5:37:06 AM - 002097953401
Siggy!...this is truly great news!! Hey....I recall back in our Army days, you were "tough as nails", never backed down, from anyone. Like a fighter, sounds like you got the best of this awful disease. Hang tough..Siggy!!
6/7/2011 12:17:08 PM - 000044828457
Dang Siggy! Sounds like it's been a rough road to recovery. I hope things keep on getting better. Great news.

Well hello one and all hawkers, sorry I have been gone for so long, but I have been undergoing cemo treatments, But I found out on the 30th of last month that I am in remission from cancer. And I feel on top of the world. Thanks to eveyone for all the best wishes.
5/31/2011 2:26:08 PM - 002097756136
Don't know if we will get more traffic here, but I promoted the site on the Giessen Depot page on Classmates.com. Time will tell. Hope all had a good Memorial Day.
5/31/2011 2:16:34 PM - 000044828457
It is amazing how the old site looked 10 years before we were on it.
5/29/2011 12:07:48 AM - 002097756136
Enjoyed the older pics. Those Black/White/Gold hawks were much prettier than the OD green ones. :)
5/28/2011 11:40:17 PM - 000044828457
I got a very nice note from Ken Terranova. He was on our TAC site in the Mid 60s! It included pictures from our TAC Site also taken in the Mid- 1960s.... I have posted the pictures on the site and here is the note:

Hi Larry........
Here are a few of the pics of the old tac site in the mid sixties. I tried to remember the names and the spelling of them. I did the best I could.
I got there on march 1st 1966. I came from Fort Sill with a MOS of 13A10 (Field Artillery). The First Sgt was going to send me to Rivers Barracks but they were short handed in the motor pool. He said he would try me out. After a couple of months, I went TDY to wheel and track school.. to become MOS qualified. Things worked out well and I made PFC and then Sp4 buy Oct. of 66. We were way understaffed buy the end of 66. There was a big levy from DA for personnel. The big push was for the build up in Nam. At one time there was only 67 of us. Double duty for the manning crews and 7 day work weeks. Things eased up by the spring of 67 with lots of new faces and equipment. I made Sp5 in Jan 67 and then went to the 7Th Army NCO academy in March. I was a Motor Sgt. from May 67 -Sept. 68. Use what ever you feel best. Thanks, Ken Terranova

5/16/2011 3:21:25 AM - 002097953401
Larry...the new videos were great! You're doing a fantastic job with this site! Like I mentioned before...so far were only 15 members strong from our ol' unit. You know, when I tell other veterans about our site, I tell them...one member is an active Major General..one a former LT. It's like...oh yea...they don't realize we knew Eldon and Joe as fellow soldiers...so many years ago. Like you say..I get a "kick" out of that...later guys!!!
5/9/2011 7:14:42 PM - 000044828457
SGT Hall is mentioned in MG Regua's picture # 9. He may be in the shadows (on the left) and not on the right as I first thought.  This is from 1979.
5/9/2011 5:19:11 PM - 002097953401
Hey Larry...when I made contact with Mushynski, he mentioned a (16E) named Hall. He was from the same home town, as my roommate SGT. Kirby. I tried to contact him , no luck. I do remember him, for the fact, he once told me he enlisted for (4) years. We didn't have to many guys serving that long. Guess that just stuck! Anyway....he was alright....

Subject: 2/2 ADA & 3/7 ADA HAWK

Hi Larry, no this ain't no sales call or pitch, I'm a former HAWKer just like you. I am Randolph R. Smith (R.R. Smith) and I entered active duty on 10 June, 1980. Originally I was a 24E but dropped the course mid Nov 1980. I was sent to B 2/55 ADA in Jan of 1981 at Ft. Bliss Tx as a 16E and PCSed to Germany in Late March of 1982 and was assigned to A Btry 3/7 ADA in Schweinfurt, Germany until ETSing in late May of 1984. I was 1 of the very few 16Es to be in AP1, Base plt(that sucked) then AP2. MY point for this letter is 2 fold. 1st, although I was never stationed in Giessen, I was always fascinated by the different HAWK sites in, Germany and their layouts, I,ve seen other sites such as B 3/7 ADA ( on towers) and C 3/7 ADA (Bamberg) during CRT training... I have also seen B 1/1 ADA when we went to the firing range in Wildflecken( that was "wild" ). Also saw C Btry 6/52 (Giebestadt) and A 3/60 site in Grafonwoehr. I really enjoyed the pics of A 2/2 site in Giessen and could relate. Also you may know some people from 2/2 that I met either at Ft. Bliss or some guys in Germany who were stationed @ 2/2 ADA that were stationed in Germany during a previous assignment. One was a SP4 Tompkins who was a 16E in Germany prior to PCSing to Ft, Bliss from B Btry 2/2(Nice TAC site) or with me in Germany was a SFC Nugent, who I believe was a 16E from a prior assignment from A 2/2 or definitely a Sp4 Peter Emerson or a then SGT William Hall (16E) who was definitely assigned to A Btry 2/2 ADA until very late 1980 or very early 1981. Eaither way give me a hollerback. Although I was never there in Giessen I definitely enjoyed looking at them, and yes I heard about C Btry 2/2 ADA and how nasty the TAC site was in all that mud.

my reply.........

R.R.,

May I post this note on the A2/2 web site? I think that the others Hawkers will get a kick out of it. I left A 2/2 in Sept of 78. Several of the A 2/2 site members will know some of the people you mentioned. SGT Hall sounds very familiar. I visited several sites while in (West) Germany. Did you ever go to Bitburg?

Thank you for contacting me. I hope all is going well for you.

Larry I e-mailed back but think I forgot to send. Yes by all means feel free to post this on the A 2/2(HAWK) ADA website. I would love to hear from other HAWKers from Germany... especially 2/2 ADA and 1/1 ADA(Wildflecken) and I definitely would love to hear and converse with you and others from 2/2 ADA and they may very well know some of the folks I mentioned. Like you I was and still am fascinated about the different HAWK sites locations and layouts in Germany. When I was stationed @ Ft. Bliss (B Btry 2/55 ADA) prior to PCSing to Germany, there was 2/55 ADA, 1/65 ADA, 1/7 ADA(which had the same unit crest as 3/7 ADA in Germany) and 5/57 ADA (4 Line HAWK Bn,s). The 5/57 ADA had the same unit crest as 2/57 ADA in Germany. There was also S & F (Staff and Faculty Bn, that was a nice assignment if you could get it) and the so called TAC site was an area called Tobin Wells in which all the line batteries equipment was all next to one another-unlike Germany in which they were strategically spread out. I never did get to Bitburg. I believe that was B Btry 2/62 before it deactivated in the latter '80s. It was then re-activated at Ft. Ord CA as a Stinger unit. I tell you this Larry, I liked Germany better than Hawaii where I was stationed after I re-entered active duty in Jan. of 1986, I would have rather been stationed in Wildflecken over Hawaii any day of the week and twice on Sunday. After I ETSed in late May of 1984 I rejoined in Oct. of 1985 and went to Ft Benning GA to be an 11B. What possessed me to do that I,ll never know. But then I went to Ft. Bragg N.C to the 82 Airplane gang (that was NUTS!!!!). I ended my jump status and then got sent to the 25th I.D. at Schofield Barracks, HI. The 16E MOS wasn't available when I re-joined. I sure would have taken it if it was. My daughter just doesn't understand why I like Germany better than Hawaii but in any case she says hi.  I definitely look forward to hearing from you and the other 2/2 ADA HAWKers soon. And yes once again please feel free to post my letter.

(AKA Pudd) ....I got that nickname in Germany because a German civilian who worked at the gym said to to me "How are you doing bud" but pronounced it Pudd and one of the other guys was with me and the name stuck.

Well... Wayne's group picture was taken in Feb. of 1978. I am in it. I left Germany in September of 1978. I could not have been in any photo taken in 79.  The missile pic is simular to one I have (78) but mine is at an angle that is more behind it....  with more smoke and sand.  Not that great.  Hard to say if it is the same missile.
4/28/2011 11:26:03 PM - 003026746821
Wayne to be honest I pray that it was the 78’ missile firing also was the maroon hat the 78’ crew and the blue 77’ crew? Sure is great to have this web page it makes our time there so much more alive: thanks Larry I know I keep saying thanks but there is no other way to put it. Larry nice news shot of MG Regua, giving the troops a hand up in rank. I hope everyone had a great Easter now back to the hill, Billy make sure that your birds are ready to fly see ya!!

p.s. for all of you who live in the tornado alley keep your supplies up and your head down hold on tight
4/19/2011 2:18:21 PM - 000044828457

I hope all is going well with everyone. We had a lot of tornado activity here in NC on Saturday. This is rare. We came out of it without much damage to our home and surrounding community. Some in nearby counties lost their lives.

MG Regua, I found an ABC-13 (WTRK-TV Houston) news video with you in it. It was the Ellington Field promotion ceremony of BG John Turner. Very nice.

Lt. Sers...how you doing these days?? Did we have some good times!! Proud to have served with you...no regrets!!
3/21/2011 2:42:12 AM - 002097953401
General Regua; was that "Ouzo" bad news or what?? CPT. Trice should have talked the Air Force, into shipping a "tanker" full back with you guys. Heck...you could have powered the whole Tac Site, for a year off that stuff. Take care..General.....good hearing from you!!
3/14/2011 5:37:21 AM - 002097756136
General Regua, thanks for jogging my memory. Mr. Hendrick was the other WO with Mr. Armistead. Just couldn't remember his name. Also, you have your crew drill...I still have my "Little Black Book" with numerous adjustments and checks. Remember "5-2-5"? And...did you see that I sent Larry a pic of that missile firing in '79? Maybe you can verify whether the pics I sent in were '78 or '79.
3/11/2011 4:18:29 AM - 000020504991
A/2/2- Was it Fidus Ultra Finem, Home of the Professionals? Appreciate you all keeping the fire going...I too had warm memories of NAMFI, Crete. The 24G's got me to go bottom's up on a shot of Ouzo on my first visit to the NCO Club there in summer of '78(I remain a tea-totaler to this date). I recall the additional luggage which Mr. Armistead and some of the section chiefs brought down in the C130 from Rhein Mein to Souda Bay. I remember seeing lettuce, cigarettes, hard liquor, not sure what else.?? Did that really help our score?? Steve in the downtown Hania restaurant seemed to know everyone's score the Sunday before the Wednesday "Battle Stations" ORE run...True? I have a copy of the NATO(NAMFI) crew drill somewhere in my garage, it was a gift from either Mr. Armistead or Mr. Hendrick. I was the firing TCO in '79, 93.4 was our score...We lost a few points due to safeties, were either .5 or 1 point deductions, I believe. Honored to serve with your guys...
3/7/2011 4:13:10 AM - 002097953401
Yea..where have you been Siggy?? Sure is good hearing from you. You alright? Wow...don't worry about the video paint...I'm on my way to the paint shed, as we speak. HA. Barry....sorry I missed call...got message...doing fine hope you are too. Matter of fact, hope all you guys doing o.k. Barry...we may have to go to "Walmart", buy "Mushroom" a computer. HA. Larry; Wayne; Bob;good job. Gordon....wow....maybe we should all stand formation one more time...promote you to SFC!! Siggy...get well soon!! Well time to do a "fire and function" test. MG.Regua...Lt.Sers..."Blazing Skies"!!!!
3/3/2011 4:19:03 AM - 003026746821
Siggy, Thanks for the heads up. Pray you are doing well and getting better every day. Now back to the hill. We need to run an ORE. Hope to hear from you often.
Hey Billy, I did call you the other Sat. and left message. I was able to speak to Bruce who still does not have a computer but swears he will get one.
3/3/2011 3:24:11 AM - 000044828457

In the "Other Hawk Related Videos" section of this website.... At the end of the "Discover New Grounds" video (just before they are sitting at the A section first launcher area) they jump down from the top of the old bunker that some of you left farewell messages in. Pretty interesting.
2/11/2011 3:19:40 AM - 002097953401
Hey Barry...I had some good times with you and Mike at Ft.Bliss. We did get a little wild, now and then. Yes, I recall Mike saying something about cross training to a (16E). We talk off and on. Yes...maybe it's time to have a party do something, life's to short. I don't see any of us getting younger. Let's don't have it in Jaurez....been watching the news. Not the same Jaurez, we all remember anymore, thats for sure. Well....time for launcher checks.
2/10/2011 6:07:03 PM - 000044828457
Wayne... This is cool. I will add it to the favorite sites.
2/10/2011 2:13:06 PM - 002097756136
I don't know if this site was listed Larry. I didn't see it. I think our MP's were from here. Lots of pics from Giessen and Depot. If you look you might even find a HAWK launcher being towed in a parade.

2/9/2011 8:08:02 PM - 003026746821
Hi gang. Nice to see you back on the site again. Billy, now we just need to get the others to get on the site a little more and we can have a party! Ha yes Larry, Ft. Bliss, best food at any base that I had been to... in fact Billy, Mike Ross and I went through together.  Mike had been given an additional MOS from his 31 Lima to a 16-E. I was looking at the picture of the winter storm from outer space. The storm was so big that it looked like it was from the movie "Day After Tomorrow". Kind of freaky.. well got to run. Another ORE for Capt. Trice.  See you on the hill
2/4/2011 11:59:54 PM - 002097953401
Oh..no..this chemical you guys have been talking about...we 16D's used that as a "de-greaser" to keep the missile trucks clean. If memory serves me right ,it was stored in drums behind Motor Pool and a paint shed. Check out Waynes "Ready Bay"pic. Where the truck and two guys are standing there was a water hose connection. We mixed this chemical with water to keep the missile trucks clean.Oh, well....they never advised us of radiation danger either.So....maybe this is why the skin on my hands is paper thin...almost transparent. Think I'll have a couple beers...listen to "Foghat" and "ThinLizzy".
2/2/2011 5:45:44 PM - 000044828457
Thought this was interesting .... It's Groundhog Day and it is snowing at Ft. Bliss with a temp of 9 degrees at noon.  Chill factor is 9 below zero!
1/23/2011 11:47:24 PM - 000044828457

May have made a mistake on Trich's long name... it's Tricloroethlene... The Army switched to Tricoethiline in the 80's. Tricloroethlene was very toxic... Good thing they switched.... The Tricoethiline only causes cancer.

I use to do a little wave soldering in the mid 90's.   We used that Tricoethiline by the 55 gallon drum to remove flux off of new computer cards.  That stuff was also used to clean car engines before painting.  Todays brake cleaner in the spray can is simular.

Remember using talcum powder to get a cable end dry?

1/22/2011 2:09:19 PM - 000044828457
Oh yes.... Tricoethiline will make that cup melt into a snot like liquid. I know it was funny to see that happen. After someone goes through something like that they start learning and listening better because they realize how green they are.   ARD and BRD.... I remember messing with that "range" problem. Remember a couple of bad slip ring problems? Had to hand update the schematics on B IHPIR twice after moving 2 wires to the spare ones on both sides. A waveguide with a pinhole was the worst to find and fix. Caused strange problems. We just got into a mode of remembering what part fixed a weird symptom last time and tried it first when we had a simular symptom. It got to the point where I was getting good at it. Probally should have stayed in.
1/22/2011 4:39:33 AM - 003077747798

Larry, I see everyone still has a sense of humor. Doppler Grease? Remember hand the new guy a star foam cup and send him for a cup of Trich degreaser?
The ARD and BRD were part of the print out in the ICC and PCP tape for integrated system checks. They were Alpha Reconstituted Doppler and Bravo Reconstituted Doppler. We were lead astray by it being referred to as range Doppler. So we changed tracker 1, with no change in the printout. When we figured out the reconstituted part that lead us to our friend tracker 2 and that was the fix. Kind of a waste of time, however it was part of the times.
1/21/2011 10:58:18 PM - 003026746821
Is that right next to the box toe-nails
1/21/2011 2:21:23 AM - 000044828457
I used it last. I think I put it next to the cable stretcher. Look behind the video paint.
1/21/2011 12:34:46 AM - 003026746821
Well Larry not bad for and old timer, but the question is does anyone know where I can get some Doppler grease? Maybe down at M&S building. Wow Larry I left at the end of May 78' so I got lucky and did not go out in Summer of 78' I was home getting along with what would become my current wife of 32 years.
1/20/2011 4:18:02 AM - 000044828457
Yeap... You are correct Mr. Underwood. I was a very short timer when we went to the field my last time in mid September of 1978. I had to rush after I got back from the field to get everything done before I left.  TA-50 stuff had to be turned in and a bunch of signatures had to be collected.  Was crazy.
1/19/2011 10:00:08 PM - 003026746821
Happy New Years to everyone I hope and pray your Holidays where great. Now it is time to report for duty. Okay Larry I will give it a try, ABC stands for Atomic, Biological, and Chemical hazards/weapons. My goodness Larry you guys were very busy during my last six to eight months, never realized that the layout of the site was done by you guys I thought it was the TCA and TCO jobs to line up the equipment and ensure that we would not be dinged for placement. I always thought you guys would have your hands full just ensuring that the equipment was running correctly. With that in mind how much problem did you guys have with the equipment once we got to a new location? Nice test
1/19/2011 4:06:22 AM - 000044828457
I was (almost) always ahead of the equipment convoy in the field (during my last year). Three of us had to layout the IHPIR and Launcher locations while I was also being the "ABC" guy too. The observers would sometimes watch how I did the ABC stuff. Question to you all .... What does ABC mean? We also had to have everything between the minimum and maximum distance from each other. The launchers could not be less than the minimum safe blast distance from the IHIPIRs. We would get dinged and have to move something to fix the problem if it was. The launchers also could not be past the maximum spacing distance because the cables would then not reach from the J-Box or the J-Box would then be too close (while trying to cable to all 3 launchers). We would pre-stake the location markers. The trucks knew what to do as they drove up. Yeap.... cables would start flying and the loaders would start getting ready for missiles as soon as the launchers were dropped. A well oiled machine.
1/18/2011 10:53:27 PM - 003077747798
If I recall, we did it in 12 minuntes. That was hard work, and when we went by BN the horns on every truck was honking.
1/18/2011 10:28:13 PM - 002097953401
We're getting serious now. Ouestion...With members we have now, if placed in open field, with a complete radar/launcher fireing section, could we set up radars/align them for tracking and having launchers loaded/ready to fire? This includes all the "trouble shooting" involved. Just a thought.
1/17/2011 4:02:14 AM - 000044828457
No Problem..  This has got my attention.  What is the meaning of those acronyms? Is there an LT on the site?
1/17/2011 3:55:01 AM - 003077747798
Larry, I hate this but I would like a LT to give a shot.
1/17/2011 3:34:06 AM - 000044828457
Let me take a shot at it...... Amplitude Range Doppler (back scatter) and Beam Range Doppler?
1/17/2011 12:09:16 AM - 003077747798
Larry Hicks, this a small test of your bullet proof memory. This comes from your shot about change the tracker 2. What was ARD and BRD? I think we were some of the first in the field too figuire this out. Open to all, give Larry first shot he has earned it.

BarryH
1/7/2011 2:41:39 PM - 000044828457
Billy.... I never went to any of those places. A cold beer and a little socializing was about it.   I had a really nice German girlfriend the last 8 months I was in Germany.
1/7/2011 2:21:09 AM - 002097953401
Not to get anyone in trouble here, but was Amsterdam as entertaining as the places a few blocks down the street from the Frankfurt Bonhoff...sure don't see places like that over here.Wow.....
1/6/2011 5:33:13 PM - 003026746821
Thanks Barry H. by the time you got there I was within 11 months from getting out and I may had an attitude about my time there. I had just received at article 15 lost three grade in rank, reduce pay, and 45 days restriction based on nothing. I even had a hand written statement from Sgt. Ford stating that I had nothing to do with what was going on (gives a bad taste in the mouth). Congratulations on serving the full time. OKAY EVERYBODY THE NEW YEAR IS HERE AND YOU ARE ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT ONE. NOBODY ON THE HILL TODAY
1/3/2011 11:43:26 PM - 000044828457
Everyone...  I hope all is going well... It's now 2011!. I can now see time speed up as I get older.
1/3/2011 11:31:12 PM - 000044828457
Barry Harrod, I remember the day you arrived. SFC Bill (Elmer) Brown was with you when you walked in to the 24C shop area. I really learned a lot about HAWK IHPIRs by being around you those 17 months before I left the military. When in doubt, change the "tracker 2". Just kidding (kind of). You really brought what you learned at Bliss with you. We had fun too! A lot of good memories. BTW.. I got married in 1982. We are doing well. I still work with electronic "stuff" too. Isn't the digital age wonderful and amazing?
1/3/2011 10:59:49 PM - 002097953401
Barry Harrod, welcome back to the "hill". As you can see, some of us are still around. That's a good thing, though. Hey Gordon....beers and Schnitzel's sound good to me! You know, I forgot what the heck I wrote. I hope this is good year for everyone.
1/3/2011 4:06:53 PM - 003077747798

Hay Barry Underwood, Barry Harrod arrived at A 2/2 in April 1977 and reassigned to Fort Bliss in April 1981. Married my lovely wife in Ruidoso New Mexico in 1983 and continued my career in the ARMY retiring in1994. Moved to Nevada to work for EG&G, still in doing same work for JT3.

1/1/2011 11:34:18 PM - 003026746821
Hay - Barry H. I was wondering when you served in Germany? I was there from Sep. 75 to Apr. 78, and with a name like Barry I thought for sure I would know you. Also what is your status?
1/1/2011 11:30:21 PM - 003026746821
Happy New Year to all from the Northwest, I pray that everthing is going great in your life's. Look for a great 2011
1/1/2011 4:21:43 PM - 003026755949
Yep Happy New Year to all you guys hoping 2011 will be a good year, Billy now that you are thinking the bunker in the video might be the same one we will just have to go back and see if your 'short-timers' message is still inside on the wall, beers and Schnitzel's all around.
1/1/2011 3:18:01 PM - 002097756136
Happy 1/1/11 to the 2/2!

I have a picture of that yellow Dodge somewhere. Will try to post it.
12/23/2010 7:55:56 AM - 003077747798
Larry, I was thinking Amsterdam was a a lot of fun. It was a great time to be young and looking at history and pretty girls. It all seems like yesterday, be good to do it one more time.
12/23/2010 1:53:20 AM - 000044828457
Hello Barry Harrod! Let's go to Amsterdam again.
12/18/2010 4:45:35 AM - 000044828457
It is cold here in North Carolina.  One more week until Christmas.  I found a very nice link that would be nice to send to others as an e-Mail Christmas card......

Gordon what did we tell you about hunting at your age (Ha! Ha!) I at least hope you bagged something for your hurt. Also if you have any additional tile chips that would be cool from either the ready bay or bathroom.
Larry once again thanks so much for this site I was just on the live cam cool also past/new section really cooled.
NOW TO ALL THE TROOPS THIS IS HOLIDAY TIME AND YOU ARE HEREBY ORDER TO TAKE LEAVE UNTIL THE NEW YEAR. ALSO YOU ARE ORDER TO HAVE FUN AND I DO NOT CARE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO YOU ARE ORDER TO HAVE FUN. Really guys have a great holiday season with your family’s
12/2/2010 6:14:32 AM - 003026755949
Nice to see a few new photos thanks, my shoulder is still waking me up 4-6 times a night but I got my range of motion back, ouch. Anyway wishing all of you guys a great holiday season I left a few comments on some of the photos with a bit a a story on old Crooks. Barry come on down and visit if it gets too cold up there in Portland we don't get no snow in the bay area, if I think I want snow I just pull up Larry's blizzard photo and say: nah!
11/25/2010 4:19:30 PM - 000044828457
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.  I can remember working on the site one Thanksgiving.  I was single and decided to let a married man spend time with his family.  Also had a very nice meal at the mess hall the next year.
11/16/2010 6:47:29 PM - 000044828457
Barry... Great to hear from you... I always like to hear about things that happened during this time. The pictures do help trigger some of the memories. To be at that age again and to know what I know now would be something.
11/11/2010 6:22:02 PM - 002097953401
Funny thing..21 yr.old kid on a Nato Missile Site, launcher crew chief with all that responsibility and it's taken me what....nearly a year to figure out how to put my pic. on the website.HA Maybe I attened one to many of our little barracks "come as you are get togethers".
11/11/2010 3:06:32 PM - 000044828457
Billy has a Site Member pic now!
11/10/2010 1:34:56 AM - 002097953401
First..Gordon thats got to hurt. Hope all works out. For real! Sure hope you had you're rifle pointed down range. Anyone...in Gordon's video of Depot..that
small building right behind our barracks...was'nt that the place that sold stereo
equipment...where we bought our stereos? I remember putting mine on lay-a-way..on payday making payments until pay-off. Also..remember on payday the tan colored "Mercedes Benz" taxi cabs lined up bumper to bumber in front
of the front gate? We had to pass thru that building and show I.D. to a German Security Guard. Seems like he set at an elevated desk in that building. Wow...hope I'm not in first stage "Alzemirs"..HA
11/5/2010 2:20:46 AM - 000044828457
Wow... I bet that hurts. Will send you my address. Thanks!
11/4/2010 1:57:10 AM - 003026755949
Larry, great job on the past/now pics. I'm a bit laid up dislocated my shoulder out hunting the other day, ouch! Hey I brought you a few small chunks of brick leftover from the old maintenance shack, shoot me an address and I will mail them to you, I know kind of stupid but I figured what the heck maybe Larry will take a picture of them and post it. Not as cool as the fake pieces of the Berlin wall you can still buy in front of Brandenburg gate in Berlin but then I am not charging 5Euro for it.
10/27/2010 12:52:26 AM - 002097953401
Looking at the count...were getting some serious views. Maybe we're doing something good here. Having a Major General and former LT. as members could be a factor. All the pics., Gordon's videos...we're in there.
10/27/2010 12:13:54 AM - 002097953401
You guys really had the case of "munchies", to run off with the bread for toast. Some of those left overs stayed in Tac Site mess hall for days.HA. Oh well, guess we did what we had to do....
10/22/2010 12:44:58 PM - 000044828457
I am still looking at Gordon's videos of the site. I see something new each time.
10/20/2010 10:42:55 PM - 002097953401
Hey Larry...good job with the fence pics. Man...close to perfect match. Looks
like the fence is the only relic remaining, from our ol' Tac Site. Well maybe not
forgot about 2 poles in front of you're ol' building. Amazing isn't it? I mean we're talking 3 decades plus. Like Wayne said....WOW
10/18/2010 12:31:07 PM - 000044828457
I found a better 1978 pic of the fence and posted it at the bottom of the Past/Now pics section.  It was not IHIPIR "B"s hill fence.  It was AFP-1s IHIPIR hill fence.  Look behind me in my short timer picture (# 154 ).
10/16/2010 7:54:45 AM - 002097756136
Wow, that wooden fence is still there. Hard to believe that after all these years.
10/14/2010 6:50:48 PM - 002097953401
You know, Gordon was right about someone firing a round off, during the
Baaeder Meinof incident. I recall most of us on "hill" that night. I know Deltas
where, because SFC McCoy (head of MP's),walked us around Tac Site , posting us . I was with someone,in Alpha Launcher Section. Has night dragged
on, folks started "smoking".We never heard the shot. We were watching fence
line, all of sudden, here comes "the troops". Right under "fence security lights". We were thinking "what a swell way to get shot". Maybe some "knuckle
head" Delta was trying to load his weapon. Scary night.....
10/12/2010 6:22:18 PM - 000044828457
Yes... It's the same fence.... It is what is left of IHIPIR B's hill (without the wild flowers)..   must have been creaso dipped to have lasted for 32 years and counting.  Added some pics of it at the bottom of the Past / Now Pics section..
10/12/2010 6:12:37 PM - 002097953401
Check it out...In part 2 of Gordon's video, as he walks past Larry's building he
pans to left. You see old wooden fence, that he mentions. After all these years
could that be part of the same fence in Larry's pic. #59?
10/11/2010 12:37:20 PM - 000044828457
Oh the memories... The 24C shop would get a bit cold sometimes. We were not as warm as some of the other areas. Had that big "un-insulated" door and a "few" drafts. The old candy machine was just to the right as you walk in. Always had a Zagnut left when all the other brands were gone. A German guy would stock it every 2 weeks. A strong cup of coffee and a candy bar would give you a bit of a wakeup. We had a huge coffee pot in the 24C shop people area. You would walk in from the outside and make a quick left into the gathering area. SGT Ford would pay us a visit in the mornings most of the time and SFC Brown would arrive and see how things are running and what problems may exist. BTW... SGT Ford really loved coffee. I would start a new pot around 5am ish when I stayed all night. It was a kind of courtesy to the ones coming up.... We would always do "turnover" to the day crew while drinking a fresh cup. I would tell them everything I could think of about a night of problems or just say that all is well when we were blessed with a quiet night. Most of the time the "A" IHIPR was "hotter" than "B" and I would just just say.. "don't touch anything until it breaks". You would normally have a good day or 2 after the problems were chased away.  I can remember being so burnt out with a problem one morning that I put water in the coffee pot,  plugged it in and forget to put the coffee in it.  SGT Ford arrives and goes "what the hell is wrong with this coffee"..   We laughed about it later.
10/11/2010 12:38:06 AM - 000044828457
Yeap... It would be cold. The heater would feel nice. Toast was a bonus.
10/10/2010 9:54:53 PM - 002097756136
Larry, I'll try. Barry, I DO remember the kero-heater and making toast. I remember going to the ready bay and scrounging to see if there was any food left. There was usually bread. I wonder how much toast we ate during those couple years. :D
10/9/2010 11:30:43 PM - 003026746821

Larry – I know I have said this in the past, but thank you for creating this site! It’s a cool way hear from other people's stories about

what they did back then on the hill, in Crete, or what they’re currently doing.

Gordon – my brother, what can I say? Those videos bring back so many memories. In fact …

Wayne – I recall in the M&S building you guys had a kerosene heater for those late winter nights. That heater was so hot, you could cook toast on it in less than 1 – 3 seconds! I remember this because I was working with either you or Larry on Alpha IHIPR. When we went down to the shop to get a part, we’d also get a few pieces of toast!

10/9/2010 9:47:25 PM - 000044828457
Wayne, Could you scan that booklet into a pdf file? I would nice to see it. Would also post it for everyone.
10/8/2010 8:54:39 PM - 002097953401
Vince..hows it going? Hey Barry..on manning after system checks, I liked hanging out with you guys in BCC. During you're van watches. It really amazed me. The tracking and locking of targets. I recall you and Mike both should me a few things. Yea...TCO scope...I can still picture the west-east divide. Glad we did'nt have to get serious, with the good citizens, over the
fence.
10/8/2010 6:21:25 PM - 000044828457
Barry, Great story. I really enjoyed working on the hill.
10/8/2010 4:57:35 AM - 003026746821
Hi Guys, it’s been a while since I was on the website, but I was busy ensuring that the motor control switch on the IHPIR was flipped up and equipment properly grounded. These are the actual reason of how I failed my first ORE and got stuck on the hill for three days!
I see we have a new member -- welcome aboard, Lt. Sers! It’s been a long time since I left the military and I hope you are doing well.
Yes, Billy, I also remember those late nights working as a 16-E. We had van watch, so somewhere you were going to spend 2 hrs. of the night in that van. I recall one night when I was on van watch when HQ woke me up (sounded alert horn in head set!).
Sure enough, I got up and looked at the TCO scope (had a line dividing the scope from east to west) -- and to my surprise, I saw a bleep on the east side heading to the west. Next, I saw 5 bleeps from the west heading east and then I watched the one east bleep turn around and head back home!
Oh the memories!!
10/7/2010 10:13:35 PM - 000044828457
Greetings Vince. Good to hear from you. You are our newest member.
10/7/2010 5:09:17 AM - 002097756136
Gordon, thanks for sharing the videos. Great job! It certainly has been a long time. Larry, Jim Henderson has a Raytheon booklet that has a story about 4/3 Patriot getting ready to deploy to Giessen. Interesting.
10/6/2010 1:50:07 PM - 002099315592
The C Btry Tac Site was either on the Depot or very close to it. I had to go work one their ICC on time. I think it was in prep for an eval.  What a crappy mud hole they were in. We had it great on the hill.
10/4/2010 2:39:08 AM - 000044828457

Gordon has returned from Germany and our old TAC Site. He has brought home some very nice videos.  I have posted each video link on the A22hawk website.  You can also go directly to Gordon's Youtube channel and view the videos of the old TAC Site, Headquarters and Depot by just clicking on the link below:

10/3/2010 9:35:11 PM - 000044828457
Gordon... Thank you ! Thank you! Thank you! I have enjoyed the videos so much.
9/29/2010 12:37:33 AM - 002097953401
Yea, think we all did. When system was hot, sure did'nt take long to run thru systems check. I remember, after checks folks running back to Ready Bay (mess hall). The cooks from Depot, would leave left overs in the ol' frig.
LT. Fugual, made sure of that. Anyone remember Burton the cook...from
Depot Mess Hall? He did a lot of our Tac Site cooking. He was alright......
9/28/2010 12:03:37 PM - 000044828457
Billy.... I remember those nights. I liked it when it all worked together and everything was tweeked up.
9/28/2010 11:48:33 AM - 000044828457
I think Gordon's last day in Germany was the 22nd. It will take a little time to edit and prepare the video.
9/27/2010 3:39:09 AM - 002097953401
When's Gordon returning home? Can't wait to see video he made. You did good, Gordon. To All..."Alpha-Bravo Sections, prepare for HE Fire-n-Function Checks". I hated that. Most of the time it meant, Larry's section was on Rader Hill, "tweaking" the radars. The 16E's at their consoles, in BCC. 16D's in their "J-Box" shacks. TCO would track targets "all night" long until radars were up and "hot". Some things you just never forget.
9/27/2010 2:48:17 AM - 002097953401
True story....happened more than once. I know you 16E's, remember this happening on those cold weekend Tac Site mannings. When 16D-E's would be in Ready Bay. Not sure, think there was a door,we would close to shut off sleeping area from the hallway, MP office and LT. office. Sorry LT. Sers..Joe..but this was funny. Poor Ol'Barney...some folks would turn off lights , blow smoke in his face, switch lights back on. Barney would get "serious crazy". All heck would brake loose! LT. Sers, would jerk door open, all he could do to keep from laughing, and say "ya'll leave that dog along , I hope system checks are done". About the time we all got to sleep,LT. Sers would "ease' out to BCC, and hit "siren". ORE..way into the early morning hours. Payback...Good Times....
9/18/2010 12:33:53 AM - 000044828457
Gordon... This is great!! Glad you could get on the site. I know it was a great feeling to return to the old place. Too bad The Depot was locked up. Sounds like you are having a blast. Thanks for dropping by and giving us an update.
9/17/2010 7:22:59 PM - 003026755949
Hey guys, I walked the TAC site the other day still fenced but front gate wide open, shot a full documentary for y'all. I'll have to paste it together and youtube it because is will be long. 33 years since I was there and it has changed some but very recognizable. Brought back alot of memories just to stand there. Depot was locked up tight, City of Giessen owns it now and will sell it off and raise it over time. Having a great vacation been 3000 km on the autobahn all over the place and to see the folks still here for another week.
9/14/2010 4:13:59 PM - 000044828457
I knew 1 person in C Btry. His name was Murray Parks. Never went there.
9/10/2010 9:11:40 PM - 002097953401
I know "C" Btry barracks was straight across from ours. I know this sounds crazy...but where was there Tac Site? Other than Siggy, I never met anyone from there. Hope Gordon packed plenty film....it did rain a lot in Germany.
9/7/2010 12:15:05 PM - 000044828457
Gordon will be in Germany tomorrow! I am wishing him a safe trip.  Looks like rain all this week.
9/2/2010 7:30:30 PM - 000044828457

Barry... Great to hear from you. That Mt. Hood thing is crazy.

Yeap... Some "all nighters" plus "all dayers/all nighters". A 2/2 is still the place where I have been continuously awake the longest (so far in my life). You really start thinking strange. It was not good to be around radars when you are that fatigued. We still could tweak up the IHIPIRs and they could really reach out a "few" miles (most of the time).

9/1/2010 6:33:33 PM - 003026746821
Hey Gang
We are doing fine in the Northwest, in fact just got back from Seaside, Or. Where they hold the Hood to Coast run. For some reason groups of people think it is fun to abuse their body’s by run from Hood Mt. to the coast. It takes the good teams about thirty to fourty hours to complete. When they arrive there are free massages, drinks (beer included), and other fun things to do. At the end of the night there is a free concert.
God as I think back what a wild hard ride we all went through. Just to make it is something to be proud of. I still remember when we were doing maneuver was when I found out that you could actually fall asleep standing up. There I was manning the Alpha radar leaning up against it with head set on ready to remote it in and fell asleep. They awoke me by the third time at yelling to remote in the unit.

p.s. come on you other members just get on the site and leave a note or two it does not have to be about our past you could also talk about the present. However we more in common in our past.
8/29/2010 7:32:31 PM - 000044828457
Billy... Guess they didn't want anyone getting too comfortable. I watched AFN (Armed Forces Network) TV too. I remember putting a UHF antenna on the roof of the barracks. It was a slick slate roof. Almost fell off of it.
8/27/2010 10:24:27 PM - 002097953401
Also.....why did we never have "sheets-n-blankets", on the racks in the Ready Bay? I remember everyone sleeping on a bare mattres, in fatigues and most of time with boots on. Change of Manning, we'd sweep dirt off mattress, from the crew,we were relieving. The Ready Bay latrine.....that awful dark, dark, green paint. If I recall. One sink, toilet, and shower. I don't think anyone took showers on Manning. I do remember the back room in Ready Bay. We would watch "AFN" TV, on that wore out TV. Passing thought.......
8/27/2010 9:34:14 PM - 002097953401
We've never mentioned anyone from Motor Pool. I knew they sure liked to party. I attended a few of thier "hallway door to door", come as you are get togethers. Great time, never knew one person. Did'nt seem to bother them one way or another. Anyway.....the other day came across my old Millitary Drivers License, issued from Motor Pool. They had me listed for almost everything on Tac Site. From a jeep to five ton truck. The test was'nt hard. Get in, start vehicle, left-n-right turn signal, pull forward, back up,switch vehicle off, "congrats" you passed. You're driving "chow truck" this week.HA. But, now we know who was in charge of Motor Pool...SFC Moore
8/18/2010 3:47:26 PM - 000044828457
MG Regua .... Eldon, Glad to see that you have kept in touch with so many of the A 2/2 alum. throughout the years. I am hoping that more will find the site. I have lost touch with so many of them. Could you let CW2 Marty Armistead know about the site? Several pictures have him in them. I am sure many have visited the site but have not become members. Walter Elkins (the webmaster of http://www.usarmygermany.com) has posted this website's link on his website. It was very nice of him to do so. I think his site may help a few more find out about our A 2/2 website. Great to hear from you.
8/16/2010 3:57:48 AM - 000020504991
All, thoroughly enjoy hearing from you and reading all the postings. Proud to have served with you all. For you 24Gs, I still can read the ADP tape when none was in the computer to verify 8 and 2, 787, 800 and 812 were are in tolerance, hooah? Warm memories and certainly grew up fast as a young 22 y/o lieutenant in a zero defect TCO position. I think of you all often and proudly display some A/2/2 memorabilia in my Commanding General's Office at the 75th Battle Command Training Division HQ in Houston, Texas. As a general officer with units all over the US the past five years, I have had the opportunity to travel across the US and visit some A/2/2 alum. Last fall(09) I was able to get with then CPT Jim Ahern, LT Mark Bahr, and LT George Harris(now MG, US Army Reserve) together for dinner in Washington, DC. LT Dave Boggs(moving back to WV) and LT Joe Sers who also are in the DC area were not able to join us. I also had lunch with then LTC Jim Sprouse and his wife Velma in El Paso, TX last summer(09). Also, had lunch with CW3 Don Stinson and LT Russ Lange at the Fort Bliss Officer's club last spring(09). Visited with LT Fred Mason, in '07 when he was in Atlanta, he is now working in Huntsville. Back in summer of '07, I visited with LT Joe Thouin in Cohoes, NYvi. Also had the opportunity to visit with LT John"JJ" Enright outside of Fort Dix, NJ. Have also exchanged emails with LT Sheila Bartley, and spoke once on the phone with LT Pat Brey. Have exchanged emails with then CW2 Marty Armistead, believe he's still with Raytheon(Patriot). Back in '05, ran into CW3 Rivera, 10th Group EMMO at Fort Bliss PX. He once told LT JJ Enright during an ORE("You ain't got no fxxking system TCO"), JJ and I laugh about this. Thanks for keeping the memories alive...
8/15/2010 2:10:42 AM - 002097953401
Gordon..how the heck are you doing? Good hearing from you also. Hope they let you on Depot, for pics. Barry..sorry about phone call, the other day. I forgot about time difference. Hey Siggy...you still out there?
8/15/2010 1:45:13 AM - 002097953401
Lt.Sers..Joe..good hearing from you! No doubt. How you been, all these years? Great having you and Eldon as members. Hey....with the members we have now, three more (16D) and we could run an O.R.E....
8/14/2010 6:39:15 PM - 000044828457
Hello Joe!
8/14/2010 7:11:30 AM - 002097756136
Please note my email has changed. It is now wmineard at frontier dot com. This is due to Verizon selling out in WV. (I write it out to try to keep spam down due to bots combing the web for addys.)
8/14/2010 7:07:09 AM - 002097756136
Eldon, good to see you again. Good to see you are still moving up the chain of command. Welcome, sir.
8/14/2010 2:17:18 AM - 002097953401
Gen.Regua...Eldon...sure has been a long time! I knew sooner or later more
"A 2/2" hawkers would come across this website. Never thought we'd have a
General,as a member! So how you doing? Looking back over "30 plus" years
ever think about our "Tac Site" days? Good to hear from you...Eldon.......
"Blazing Skies"!!
8/13/2010 9:52:16 PM - 000044828457
Hello Eldon! Thank you for your 33 plus years of service to this country.
8/13/2010 12:22:41 PM - 000044828457
Wow... Seven and Five. You have done well. Now I can say I have "only" 3 kids. Hope you can access the "Hohe Warte" (A 2/2 site) area ok. Will add your Youtube link when it is made available. Also take some pictures of where things use to be (if you can). Did you see the 5 past/now pics in a separate section of the website?
8/13/2010 4:48:38 AM - 003026755949
Oh well since were boasting grandkids, I'm probably the crazy of this bunch Petra and I have seven grown kids and 5 grandkids, but I figure my kids each owe me two so that will make an even 14 some day. Will be in Deutcshland 9/8-9/22, Giessen the last 4 days more or less, I have used Google Earth to plan my assault on the hill since the road we used to take no longer goes through, but heck I hiked it enough both from Depot and Annerod where I lived. I am figuring on photos and also making a video for a youtube link. If I can get on Depot will do that too, it has been a refugee camp I think since the Bosnia deal and not sure if they ever left.
8/12/2010 2:46:33 PM - 000044828457
Time is passing quickly.... Gordon will be visiting Germany in a few weeks. I am looking foward to seeing his pictures and videos of the old site and depot. I hope it goes well.
8/11/2010 1:03:42 PM - 000044828457
This website URL name will be changing soon. It will change from http://larryhickshawker.shutterfly.com/
to
http://a22hawk.shutterfly.com/
8/9/2010 12:33:34 AM - 000044828457
Just an update.... A "Past/Now" section has been added. Pictures are placed side by side and are very close to the same camera angle but 30 years apart. Also added a Giessen "Live Cam" section that updates pics every 15 minutes.
8/9/2010 12:14:47 AM - 002097953401
Wayne--Sorry to hear, you're Dad passed away. Bob--What's up! Good hearing from you. I have two grandkids. Being a Grandfather, really is'nt so bad. It's the age and gray hair, that bothers me. Plus the extra weight. Like Barry, I still like having fun, nothing as "extreme" ,like our army days. Although, payday was a treat. Depot, front gate catch a cab to "Bonhauff"
heading for Frankfurt. Remember the "park"-n-"Eros Centers "in Frankfurt.....
Come on now, we all made that trip at least once. Wayne..take care.
8/5/2010 1:23:21 PM - 002099315592
Barry, Sometimes I do feel like an old fart, and then sometimes I wonder what I'm going to do when I grow up.
8/5/2010 1:22:11 PM - 002099315592
Wayne, Sorry to hear about your Dad. I send hesart felt condolences to you and your family.
8/4/2010 2:56:16 PM - 003026746821
Larry you are correct we did have NATO Secret clearances back then. It was my understanding that we were 4 clearances short of a crypto clearances that would allow you to read what the President reads, also Wayne and Bob you two are old farts, with grandchildren the whole nine yards. I guess I need to include Gordon in the old fart group as he also has grandchildren. Me I am not ready, still having to much fun to slow down.
8/3/2010 3:57:37 PM - 000044828457
Wayne... Sorry to hear about your dad. Man... I need to catch up on having the grandkids. May have to have a meeting with my daughter and her husband to see what the problem is (or not). I hope your clearance is granted soon. I remember that most of us had NATO Secret clearances back in the 70s. My IHIPIR schematics had it stamped in red on every page.
8/3/2010 3:43:28 PM - 002097756136
Hey Bob. Haven't been here for a little while. Had to fly back home. My dad passed away last Saturday and I just flew back in last night. (Got to see all 4 of my grandkids, since that is a topic right now.) I'm back and hard at work. :D Seriously, still waiting for clearance. I will say hi to Jim. He hasn't changed much. Still a no-nonsense guy who gets the job done.
8/2/2010 3:09:55 PM - 002099315592
Grandchildren are great. You get to spoil them and then give them back to mom and dad. I also have three kids, the oldest is currently in Detroit doing his residency. My daughter and youngest son both live in Plano, TX. Having the grands come visit is nice :)
8/2/2010 3:03:52 PM - 000044828457
Bob... Nice to hear from you. I am still waiting for the first grandchild. I have 3 kids. My oldest (daughter) has been married for a few years and the youngest (son) is engaged. The middle son is living the single life (so far). We have had an empty nest for years now.
8/2/2010 2:17:06 PM - 002099315592
This site is so cool. I'm glad to see that the word is getting around and more guys are joining in. I've been a bit busy lately, my baby got married last December and we are holding a wedding reception for him and his bride on August 21. I have my two oldest (out of five) grandchildren visiting this month from Texas. Man do I feel old. This site brings me back to younger days. Thanks Larry!! Wayne, say hi to Jim for me.
8/1/2010 5:07:34 PM - 003030444117
I also did that buffing HQ one time I blow a fuse
7/31/2010 9:10:28 PM - 003026746821
Got lucky never had to buff floor, but I did have to check out equipment all the dam time. In fact that is how I got busted - that's another story
7/29/2010 1:20:46 AM - 000044828457
Don't touch the water fountain while buffing.... Gordon did.
7/27/2010 3:18:38 AM - 002097953401
Come to think of it, did'nt we "wax-n-buff" Ready Bay floor, waiting for chow truck to bring breakfast to Tac Site? Who's turn.........
7/27/2010 3:03:48 AM - 002097953401
This is cool...according to the "clock", someone needs to jump in"chow truck", head to Depot "mess hall" , bring chow up. And please......don't take "trail thru woods", its very bumpy. The eggs always get mixed, with the " milk gravy" or what ever that was...even though it was good. Most of time!
7/25/2010 5:38:04 PM - 000044828457
Added a A 2/2 Time and Weather section....
7/19/2010 9:33:06 PM - 000044828457
Billy... I posted the same question under the SNAP picture back in April. Will start to compare with other Crete pics from 77 and see if we have a missing person in the SNAP photo.
7/19/2010 8:58:34 PM - 002097953401
I never noticed this before. Check out "Snap Crew" pic. To the right of SGT. Wilbur and behind Gordons right shoulder, is that not someone "hiding"? The blue cap is plain to see. A little strange, to say the least. Looks like we have another "mystery person" HA..
7/17/2010 1:16:16 AM - 002097953401
First welcome back Siggy, hope everything turned out well. Checking out the YouTube video of Giessen and Depot, again. Noticed at bottom of video many other ones, mostly taken by Germans. After 30 plus years, the city of Giessen as gone thru major changes. Did reconize one bar near Klien Linden, had'nt changed much. Wish now I'd learned to speak German, like to know what their saying on videos. Good talking with you Art! Later..
7/16/2010 7:27:34 PM - 003026746821
Billy nice talking with you the other day and your right where is Bob? Siggy nice to see you are back with us. I will see you on the hill at Alpha HIPIR bring your can ha, ha, ha, Steve please you have got to find your pix, I wish I knew that we could take pix of the hill I was told no by Sgt. Ford. Also Gordon haven't seen you on the hill in a while
7/14/2010 8:42:14 PM - 003030444117
Underwood SIR, reporting back for duty. I was on Med. leave, But all better now and ready to stand Van Watch at 3.am hehehehe

7/14/2010 8:38:03 PM - 003030444117
Hay Art this old pfc Jensen ( Siggy) to all my army buddies. How U been?
Just read your profile, my hats off to you,and Thank You from one Vet to another
7/14/2010 2:51:38 PM - 000044828457
Steve... That would be great! Got any Haig pics?
7/14/2010 2:46:12 PM - 002099659632
Somewhere in a shoebox, I have a picture of myself giving Powell a spiel on the Radar Hill. In front of the HIPIR if I remember right. I'll see if I can find it when I get back from vacation..
7/13/2010 1:48:57 AM - 002097953401
Bob Dreyer.....you still with us? Hope so, you're pics. will more than likely, go into "A2/2 Archives". Good job.........
7/13/2010 1:36:24 AM - 002097953401
Art....have you're info. Will call ,soon as I can. For sure!! Things a little busy on home front. Hey...sure do miss those "barracks partys". Talked with Barry last nite......
7/12/2010 4:43:06 PM - 003036788330
hey billy give me a call at 256-586-7165
7/11/2010 9:15:07 PM - 002097953401
Hey Art....I think I located James Ewert. Found (1) listing in Minn., so you were right on with that. No luck though with Randy Fahlen. I asked Barry to send me you're e-mail. I'll send you info on Ewert, there's 50/50 chance we have correct info. You knew him better than I did. Well...good to see were all still here. Can't wait to see pics. Gordon comes back with.
7/9/2010 10:56:49 PM - 003026746821
Wow Larry I must have missed him, between him and Haig I would have liked to have been there for Powell. Although it was either Lt. or Capt. Powell who covered up the My Lai Massacre that happen in Vietnam. God we are so lucky that we did not have to go there, when I use to get down for the sh_t they were doing to us I would read a book called 365 day’s A Day in the Life of a Medic during Vietnam. That’s all it took for me to get out of my slump. Okay July 4th is over and I do not see anybody reporting for duty on the hill how long do I have to cover for you guys?
7/9/2010 10:26:08 PM - 003036788330

Billy I think that James Ewert lives in Minn. I think Randy Fahlen does also.We all hung out together.Hall partys and such...stereos blasting good times

7/9/2010 6:04:56 PM - 000044828457
Powell visited us via Helecopter in late 77 I think. Went up on the hill and stopped by a few radars and then looked at a launcher. I lost site of him after that.
7/9/2010 3:27:07 PM - 003026746821
Billy it was my understanding that we were the first line of defense in fact our life expectancy was 14 seconds on the hill. Art thanks for the call yesterday I will get back with you, also Billy it was fun talking with you last weekend. I hope everyone had a great 4th but now it is back to the tac-site for more fun Larry I remember when Haig visited, the site when did Colin Powell visit? I texted Siggy just the other day told he needs to report for duty on the hill
7/8/2010 9:57:32 PM - 002097953401
Art.."Siggy"and I talked awhile back, about those two UHF guys.We could see
their faces, could'nt recall names. If anyone can remember what state, they
were from, it's possible to locate them on "net". They were alright. Pulling
Manning, when all the system checks were done, some of us would hang around their UHF van. Shoot the "breeze"..........Yea Gordie.....he had a trip
lined up,back to Giessen for visit. Suppose to take pics. of Depot;Tac Site.
Larry....good job. I did'nt know our unit was a main player, during Cold War.
7/8/2010 2:28:53 PM - 003036788330

Hey yall, Did you know that we all are eligble for cold war medals? I found out from a friend in my guard unit. I was thinking about James Ewert, and Randy Fahlen. A couple of UHF boys. I wish sometimes that we could all meet somewhere. speaking of witch..Gordie where are you!!!

7/7/2010 3:33:33 AM - 000044828457
Wayne... Good to hear that Bill Brown is doing well after his health scare. He probally doesn't remember me well. Ask Harrod (when you see him) if he remembers us walking into that gay bar in Amsterdam by accident. I figured it out in 10 seconds.
7/7/2010 3:27:02 AM - 000044828457
I think we were a distraction to keep them busy for a few minutes while everyone else got ready. We were 1 of 2 tactical NATO sites in Germany. That is why Alexander Haig (NATO Supreme Commander at that time) and Colonel Colin Powell (at that time) visited us. We were an important part of the Cold War strategy. Bitburg's Hawk site was on the border of East Germany at that time.  They would be gone in just a minute.
7/7/2010 2:29:38 AM - 002097953401
Hey...according to the "U.S. Army Germany" site, we were the first line of
defense of the "Iron Curtain"! That's during the Cold War, which there for
would include each of us......now being as most of us were "at the time"
a little "scary".........
7/5/2010 2:11:01 AM - 003026746821
Wayne sorry to hear that Bill had a stroke I hope that everyone else’s health is good. I sure most of us have a little gray hair or little to next to none. Did a little work in the house today and getting ready for the fourth have a HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY be careful and light a lot of fireworks. Siggy I havn't seen you on the site for a while
7/3/2010 11:21:17 PM - 002097953401
Art---I've been "surfing around" trying to locate Harvey Whitfield, also Jaques,
can't remember his first name. Hey....anyone remember "Big Al" Stanonik?
Worked in Larry's building. Not sure, think I have info. Pat remembers him for
sure.Let you know.
7/3/2010 10:57:15 PM - 002097953401
Barry---yes I do remember Lt.Scott. Thinking back,he and "Barney" did get along. I remember the Ready Bay at nite, Lt. Scott would make his rounds,

7/3/2010 7:05:45 AM - 002097756136
Had lunch with (Elmer) Bill Brown and Jim Henderson last Sunday. Bill hasn't changed much. A little more gray, and his left arm is a little weak due to a stroke. He has a VERY nice car...'97 or '98 Corvette. Told him about the site but don't know if he will get on here. Larry, told him hello from you and still haven't seen Barry Harrod yet. have a good and safe 4th everyone.

7/2/2010 3:16:18 PM - 003026746821
Billy do you remember Lt. Scott came out of motor pool, went to OCS and became a Lt. had to be the worse TCA on the site I would not run an ORE with him because he was going to fail not once but a whole lot of times and I did not want to get stuck on the hill with him and Barney. I wrote to Mike and Pat to see if they would make more visits to the web site, so far nothing. Sgt Ford was usually so drunk he did not care as long as you did your job I remember during one of the ORE he was the TCA and cut a beer fart. It was so bad that the evaluator’s left the BCC during the test
7/2/2010 1:02:41 PM - 000044828457
I remember Fugal.  He left us alone...  which made him OK.  I hope everyone has a good Forth of July holiday.
7/1/2010 8:57:37 PM - 002097953401
Larry you're right about (Alpha,Bravo) HIPIR.
As a "Launcher Crew Chief" ,I seemed to get stuck with "Alpha Firing Section".I hated those long winter nites, cold, snowing, my crew standing around in the "J-Box Shack" , during O.R.E.'s. Waiting for Mike, Barry, or Pat to "engage-n-lock" target. Then T.C.O. would let me know, which "firing section was hot". Lt. Funk loved "O.R.E.'s......so did Lt. Smith. Anyone remember Lt. Fugal...short, rather rounded guy.....
7/1/2010 8:10:09 PM - 002097953401
Steve...yes. That's him.For some reason he spent time training me,to be a "Launcher Crew Chief". Looking back now, I owe him a favor or two. Hey..the car trade...I remember going cruising in his car. Yea...Sgt.Ball..he was alright. You're right again. Sgt. Moore. If I recall, short guy round thru the middle, was "pidgeon toed". He had real curly hair. Most of the (16E) Section, did"nt get along with him. Hey....you might remember this guy also. He was from you're time. Sgt. Wayne Betterton (16D). He drove a (Opal-GT). He and Ball were close friends. Alright.......
7/1/2010 2:09:13 PM - 002099659632
Billy, Yea, I remember your mentor(?). We traded cars. He bought my BMW and I took his Ford wagon in exchange. Jerry Ball...now that's a name I remember. He used to hang with an old Radar operator. Last name Moore if I remember right.
7/1/2010 3:38:10 AM - 003026746821
Billy I kept my fire button from the 78' firing, Pat did you keep yours? from the 77' firing?
7/1/2010 3:35:35 AM - 003026746821
Hey Steve I was on the hill in Oct. 75 as a 16-E we pretty much hung around other fire control operator’s. I did make the SNAP crew in 76’, 77’ and 78’ I remember Larry from being on Alpha high power and getting to do a little tweaking here and there. I have not gone back since however I did go down to Peru in 08’ great time. Does anyone remember the musters that were called at 2:00 am and 3:00 am when we did field maneuvers (sucked) But I will always remember Peter Frampton ‘Comes to life” would be jamming from the second and third floor. Gordon when we when down in 77’ and went to the bar I thought the guys name was Steve who cut his head open.
6/30/2010 2:54:51 AM - 000044828457
I did it. Found one and thought you all would get a kick out of it. I was in and out of the BCC a lot. Had to check out problems and fixes with the 16Es.  Did you know that "A" HIPIR always had a better range and better tracking?  "B" seemed to have more problems but ran good when it was tweaked.
6/30/2010 1:57:03 AM - 002097953401
Hey......who submitted the "fire button", from the B.C.C. ?? Had to be one of you (16E)'s!!
6/30/2010 12:32:25 AM - 002097953401
Larry's right..32 years. I hope we closed the Tac Site gate when we all left. "Siggy"??? Art, talked with Barry, forgot to get you're info. Looking forward talking with you. Gordon....don't get lost in the woods , taking pics., that was once our "Tac Site". Hey Steve ..I remember you! Don't you remember SGT. Jerry Ball....my mentor??
6/28/2010 1:47:44 AM - 000044828457
Steve, Several of the members are in the 77 Crete group photo. I worked with many of them on IHIPIR and launcher issues. ICWAR support may have had less interaction with the 16Es and 16Ds. It is great that you visit your son and grandchildren in Germany so often. I have yet to go back. It has been 32 years now. What has happened to all the years?
6/25/2010 2:31:01 AM - 002099659632
Hey Larry, thanks for the email. The site is looking good. The names of the members don't "ring-a-bell" any more. I wonder if they came after me. I left A/2/2 Oct '77 and was a 24B converted to a 24C. Arrived in '73 and spent over 4 years on the hill. I go back almost every year and my son lives in Germany (Black Forest). Three Grandchildren there...
6/22/2010 11:53:53 PM - 003036788330
Hey Billy, Long time no speak. Are you still in gainsville? Drop me a line It was cool to talk with Barry yesterday.Anybody hear from Gordie yet?
6/22/2010 1:57:28 AM - 002097953401
I'm getting to old for this....Barry is right. Somebody say somrthing. Mike...you still out there "hooking up T.V."s HA. Klien Linden, was a "blast". Good Times!!...You to Pat!!!
6/22/2010 1:04:11 AM - 002097953401
Unless you served on the "hill", no one will ever know, what our duties were. Not a shooting war., but a war of "stress", "boredom", and a sense to say the least,...I'm "short"........You know what?? Pround to have severd, and be a part of this website. Besides that...don't think I would have done anything different!
6/21/2010 10:00:32 PM - 003026746821
Come on guys visit and leave comments, Pat Grady, Mike Ross, and by the way it was cool talking with Art today. Still having a hard time understanding why you would want to go back in but good for you and your wife doing it. Billy spoke to Mushroom who for some reason does not have a computer system hard to believe. Starting to pour a silo tomorrow so for the next five days I will be very busy HAPPY FARTHER DAY TO ALL
6/20/2010 4:27:50 PM - 000044828457
I got kids... but not a grandpa yet.
6/19/2010 9:49:48 PM - 002097953401
BTW---Happy Fathers Day !! Is there a "Grandfathers Day" ,we should know about by any chance....never thought I'd be saying that...HA
6/19/2010 9:30:43 PM - 002097953401
Larry... if you think this is right move,go for it.Speaking as a member,I think you're right.I'm sure theres got to be more , guys out there, surfing arouned websites , looking for (A2/2). Hey...I was. I'm sure the other members were too. You have good thing going here! Hey...with all the pictures, posted so far, other than "Patriot Era", with what you have now, almost complete. Just make sure you're the only one in control of new site, pics.-n-comments...you know.....
6/19/2010 4:47:39 PM - 000044828457
When I first started this site it only had my content (pictures and comments). I set the site up as my connection to my old A 2/2 friends and memories. I never dreamed that everyone would participate and be so interested in the site. Due to the response, and a suggestion from a fellow hawker, I have made changes to the website so it will be our website (not mine anymore). I am also looking into changing the url from larryhickshawker.shutterfly.com to a better (our site) name. I hope you find this change a big improvement. I will still be the webmaster though.
6/18/2010 10:54:22 PM - 000044828457
Billy... We do need more A 2/2 16Ds. Got any ideas?
6/17/2010 9:30:52 PM - 002097953401
I'm the only (16D) member...just hit me. Surrounded by (16E--24G,B,C ). Hey...glad I got along with everyone. Made the time go by a little "bearable". Not to mention all the "hallway partys" in barracks. Remember the "room to room" partys?? And the stereos blasting away...wow
6/16/2010 3:27:41 PM - 003026746821

6/11/2010 3:26:21 PM - 003036788330
Hey Barry,Gordie told me about it.Yea I went back in .Did not have to do basic, but before you ship off you have to do some training. It was the same man .it was the Army
6/10/2010 9:58:50 PM - 003026746821
Hi Art did not know that you knew of the site and just read how you went back after 24 years. I was sure that when most of us got out we were not going back in. Good for you, did you have to go through basic training, AIT, etc. and what is your e-mail?
6/10/2010 3:02:45 PM - 003026746821
Gordon have a great time in Germany, Billy thanks for Bruce's phone number did you call him and tell him about the site? And the only thing I saved was my army field jacket which still fits (almost). Also Wayne did you find the pic of my missile in 78’
6/5/2010 1:53:00 PM - 000044828457
My mom and dad have kept all my uniforms for me. They have a huge cedar closet. For some reason my uniforms seem to be smaller than they use to be (ha-ha).
6/5/2010 1:25:55 AM - 002097953401
Off the wall question....did you guys save you're "Class A"-uniform? Cleaning closets today. Can't believe we found mine. Anyway.....
6/4/2010 8:55:32 PM - 002097953401
Took awhile to gather some old (AIT) pics. from Ft. Bliss. Gordon...have a safe trip...take some good pics.,for us. BTW--be sure to take breaks, if you walk back to "Tac Site". It's been a few years you know!
6/2/2010 12:23:38 PM - 000044828457
Gordon.. I can't wait to to see what you find. May be sad though... to see what time has done. I am hoping that I can someday return and visit everything.
6/2/2010 2:18:07 AM - 003026755949
I'm booked for travel 9/8-22 so will be staying in Giessen the last 4 days and will definately climb the hill and do a photo & video shoot to show, I'll see if I can get on depot as well. -Gordon
5/31/2010 1:25:51 PM - 000044828457
After Billy's question and some thought....  I have added an album on this website for any pre- A 2/2 pictures that you may want to share.... like Basic Training, AIT, Hawk School etc..  I have some I will also add.
5/31/2010 11:27:35 AM - 002097756136
Remember....
5/29/2010 2:25:05 PM - 000044828457
The mid to late 70s was a good time to serve in the military. We were so fortunate. The young man that went with my daughter to the junior-senior prom was killed in Iraq 3 years ago this month. He was 21. An IED got him. He was the gunner on top of a Humvee.
5/26/2010 1:00:33 AM - 000044828457
I hope everyone has a good Memorial Day weekend planned.
5/20/2010 2:55:38 PM - 000044828457
I would like to keep the website focused on A 2/2 pictures only.
5/20/2010 1:13:40 AM - 002097953401
Larry...is it ok to post pics. of (AIT) training,Ft. Bliss? Barracks, training site,etc....I found a few.
5/14/2010 6:28:11 PM - 002097756136
Larry, that Hawk XXI looks pretty cool. That was dated 2009.
5/11/2010 3:33:59 PM - 003026746821
Siggy so cool to talk with you this morning like you I am also in a Union. Some of the rules are not so bright.

Larry when I saw Yes it was without Rick Wakeman, they where still great with a lot of energy. Same thing when I saw U-2 at the Orange Bowl back in the 80' when they first came out
5/11/2010 12:55:15 PM - 000044828457
I saw Yes with Rick Wakeman in Frankfort in 77.... Along with Yes songs, Wakeman also played Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells... Was nice.
5/11/2010 12:47:59 PM - 000044828457
Wayne... Send me that in flight 1978 missile pic (if you can locate it) so that I can post it. Barry would get a kick out of it.
5/11/2010 12:30:34 PM - 000044828457
Siggy.... Send me some pics so I can post them on the site.
5/11/2010 1:39:01 AM - 003030444117

NeeSmith,

Just got back from  the tact site, and sorry about the losing connection loss, darn cell battery just died

5/11/2010 1:34:23 AM - 003030444117

Berry,

    Love Rick Wakemen

5/10/2010 3:19:24 PM - 003026746821
Wayne this is Barry the guy who fired that missile in 78', if you could find it. Also what was your MOS?
5/10/2010 5:09:20 AM - 002097756136
Larry, I have a pic of the missile firing in '78. I haven't come across it yet though. Got it from the door of the ICC. Had the shutter on 1/1000 and snapped it as soon as it fired.

5/10/2010 3:50:27 AM - 003026746821
Also Larry look at pictures #83 and #93 in 83 I believe that is me at the end next to Gordon same in 93
5/10/2010 3:40:25 AM - 003026746821
Larry I just want to say once again thank you for this site it is so cool to be able to talk with all the old gang. I did see my missile on the launcher and ready to go.

Siggy my wife and I saw Yes in Florida, Heart opened for them the last album I have from them is call Union back in 91’ the sad part is that it sounded like their earlier music with Rick Wakeman
5/9/2010 8:23:48 PM - 002097953401
Siggy---are you on tac site yet? Give us a call. BTW---really enjoyed talking with you........
5/9/2010 5:49:26 PM - 000044828457
I was lucky to be at both Grady's (1977 Blue Hat Year) and Underwood's (1978 Maroon Hat Year) firings in Crete. I got a really nice shot of the Grady (77) firing which is posted on this website. The Underwood (78) firing was delayed and I couldn't get a picture of it. I did take a picture of it sitting on the launcher (which is also posted on this website).
5/9/2010 4:54:31 PM - 003030444117
come to think of it I saw Golden Ear Ring in downtown Giessien
5/9/2010 4:52:47 PM - 003030444117
I saw Phill Colins open for Yes, where is Yes know
5/9/2010 4:49:27 PM - 003030444117
Capt. Trice called me in his office for my re-up speech and all he asked me was "this is a waste of time, is'nt it Jensen" and all I said was "yes sir" and I want on my way
5/9/2010 3:37:04 PM - 003026746821
Larry I also saw the Eagles for the first time in 2000 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, again in 2005 in LA Stable Center, and I have tickets to see them this May at the Rose Garden in Portland where I just saw Elton John and Billy Joel in there Face to Face tour.
5/9/2010 3:29:53 PM - 003026746821
I had a hard time with Capt. Trice in fact he was required to give us all the re-up speech. With me he saw me in the hallway and basically stated that we talk I agreed and that was the end of that. However I agree with Grady I fired the missile in 78’ what a thrill still have the fire button
5/9/2010 2:13:30 AM - 000044828457
Siggy and Capt. Trice... That made me think about that nightmare TA 50 inspection. Do you remember when Capt. Trice had us all go through that? We all had to lay out the tent poles, sleeping bags, canteen and other stuff in the same way. Had to make it look pretty. And we had to do it on the site.
5/9/2010 1:59:49 AM - 000044828457
Went to a great Van Halen Concert after I got back to the states in 79.
5/9/2010 1:55:06 AM - 000044828457
I saw Edgar Winter (which was great) but missed BOC and Tull. The best one I went to was the Eagles in 77 when Hotel California was # 1
5/9/2010 1:52:16 AM - 003026746821
Larry over there the only concert I saw was Jethro Tull, which was strange everone sat on the floor, to keep out of way I have seen all the others that you are talking about. One of the best concert was Grand Funk Railroad, Dobbie Brothers, Edgar Winter, and brand new group Blue Oyster Cult back in 71'
5/9/2010 1:50:06 AM - 000044828457
This is cool... we are almost talking in real time.
5/9/2010 1:48:43 AM - 000044828457
Gordon... I am looking foward to seeing your picture and possible video investigation of the old site and what it looks like today.
5/9/2010 1:47:07 AM - 003030444117
I agree, I'll head on up the tact site now
5/9/2010 1:45:39 AM - 003026746821
Well I agree with Siggy on the music 101, Billy, however Siggy let's us not for get CSN&Y, Peter Frampton, Comes to Alive
5/9/2010 1:43:35 AM - 000044828457
I brought home about 5 peach crates full of LPs and went to several concerts while in Germany. The Eagles, Yes and Heart were great when I saw them live in Frankfort.
5/9/2010 1:38:56 AM - 003030444117
Magee: That must have been when they Cpt. Trice had me cout martialed for running down the tact site fence. ( 77' for 12' Cyclone fence) or words to that affect. LOL
5/9/2010 1:31:19 AM - 003030444117
NeeSmith: U left out Pink Floyd, Bad Company,Moody Blues,Three Dog Nite, and sense U faild Music 101 that will be three days on the tact site
5/9/2010 12:32:39 AM - 003026755949
Heading back to Giessen this year to see Petra's folks, I'll hike on up and take some photos, perhaps a video, and see if I can get on Depot as well. I think it's been Kosovo refugee housing for quite some time.
5/9/2010 12:30:50 AM - 003026755949
Siggy, I can still hear you say it after being told to do something you did not like: "Send me to Mannheim, I wanna go!"
5/7/2010 11:34:55 PM - 002097953401
Just "kickin back" today. Listening to --Areosmith--Boston---Commmadores--Spinners--Brothers Johnson--Jeff Beck---Pat Travers--did I leave anyone out? Thanks to Larry, Bob, Wayne...what a ride!!

Siggy... Was Jesse and Randy with C Btry?   I remember Murry Parks.
5/4/2010 2:35:22 PM - 002099659632
I guess that's a bad pic. There must have been some shading affect...it's white, not gray. At least what's still there. I thought the Mahi Mahi might distract you...oh well!
5/4/2010 1:19:18 PM - 000044828457
Dang Steve.... Your member picture has a little gray hair (like me).
5/4/2010 2:52:12 AM - 003030444117
I just found one of Lt. Smith will post as soon I get them to cd. (thanks sis)
5/4/2010 1:43:03 AM - 003030444117
I also went thru some of my old photos and found some good ones, anyone remember Jesse McNolty and Randy Phlin?
5/3/2010 1:10:50 PM - 000044828457
T-Bone ... I think I do remember him. Maybe he will see the website and stop by. So many people were leaving and arriving.  I come up with people's names that I haven't thought about in 35 years (like Ofula).
5/3/2010 2:33:28 AM - 002099659632
hey Larry, do you remember T Bone? What ever happened to him?
5/2/2010 10:25:55 PM - 000044828457
Hello Siggy!
4/29/2010 2:28:44 AM - 000044828457
Hello Mike and Pat!
4/13/2010 5:06:58 PM - 000044828457
Barry, I am so glad that you found this site. Hearing from you and Gordon made my day. Gordon sent in some pics to put on the site. Do you have any that you would like to share?
4/13/2010 5:31:51 AM - 002097756136
Barry, I was there from July '77 to Oct '79. (I got a notice of your question, but can't find it anywhere. It linked me to the pic of Barney.) I was a 24G.
4/13/2010 3:38:22 AM - 003026746821
Dudes we are back may be miles between us but thanks to the net and Larry's site setup this is great and say thanks Larry
4/12/2010 7:11:35 AM - 002097756136
Good link Larry with the highlights. Easier to put things into perspective.
4/12/2010 12:30:42 AM - 002097953401
Barry; Gordon--sure has been awhile,no doubt........
4/8/2010 9:30:27 PM - 000044828457
Hello Gordon!
4/6/2010 9:32:01 PM - 000044828457
Hello Barry!
3/10/2010 5:10:24 AM - 002097756136
Billy, there may have been a lot of views, but many are the same few people. I know when the last one in Bliss was held, they only got about 20 or 25 guys. It would take a lot of effort to have one.

Why not have our own reunion? There's been many views to this site. The word has got to be getting around. Maybe in one-two years, time to plan? Put word out see what happens.......

I hope everyone has tried the "slideshow" feature of this website. Just click on one of the moving pictures. Then click on "slideshow" and then "full screen". The pause and play buttons will then control it. Also... I have updated the site security so only members can comment. If you are a Hawker then please just request membership.

THe little place at the top of the steps... I think we called it the Cantina. I liked the Katoffel Salat. I remember one day when a German guy came in dressed to the hilt carrying a briefcase. He walked up to the bar, opened his case, pulled out three or four empties, and reloaded with his beer for the day. :)

Rindswurst,my favorite to Wayne! Can't find it here in U.S. Grocery stores carry only 'bratwurst'. Bowling alley was blast!
11/17/2009 1:37:23 PM - 002097756136
If that's the same place I am thinking about Billy, my favorite was the rindswurst...big beef hotdog. Which BTW were pretty good at the bowling alley too.

Breakfast in ol' Mess Hall, best meal of day. Lunch-n-Dinner came by truck,if pulling (Manning) on(Hill). Anyone remember this place---across the tracks, left of Mess Hall, old wood building. climb up many flights of stairs. Married German couple, served (snitzel and brochen). Nice people. BTW-Hi,Steve,remember you from A-N-S- Section.
11/16/2009 12:01:49 AM - 000044828457
Thanks Steve, I am surprised that some of the old buildings haven't been bulldozed.
11/15/2009 11:57:28 PM - 000044828457
Billy... They built a new Mess Hall and more barracks in the 80s. That was the one on the video. As you know... Our mess hall was not to far from the barracks. Up more... and across the tracks. Custom made omlets in the mornings..... we had it made. No one went hungry.

Hi Larry, Thanks for sending the URL. This is pretty cool. I arrived at A/2/2 in 73 and left in 77. I have been back quite a few times and Giessen is not the little place we remember.
11/15/2009 9:14:04 PM - 002097953401
In the video-Giessen Army Depot-was that our Mess Hall?

Hi Larry. A lot of familiar faces in that crowd. One that stands out is Chief Armistead. I didn't go to Crete until '79 I believe. Our hats were maroon. I have some pics on slides and keep meaning to get them digitized, but keep putting it off. When I do, I will send them to you. Went back to Giessen in '98. Enjoyed that video from YouTube. Take care.
