North and South Carolina Dec 6 to Jan 19th
Felix has been on a slow move down the Intercoastal Waterway, and in the attachment - "Carolinas" - you can read a brief description about the ICW and our trip. There is also a detailed version for those who want to know more about the places that we visited. In summary, we had a wonderful Christmas in Southport NC, as my high school friend, Mary McMillian and her sister Carol, joined us for 2 days. They stayed in a lovely B&B, we all dined on Felix, and went sightseeing via Mary's car, as the weather was a bit chilly to do the walking tours. It was very close to being a white Christmas!
On Dec 27th we crossed into South Carolina, transited through the populated Mytrle Beach area, passing one huge house after the other, plus an incredible flotilla of boats, all of which line the banks of the canal. Just a bit further south we dicovered a great marina, up a little river, called Osprey were we spent a few days waiting for the arrival of our Colorado neighbor friends, Carol and Mike, who joined us on New Years Eve Day. Because we had all been traveling all day, (by plane and car) our ringing in the New Year was a bit low key and the guys even had to wake Carol and me up for the event. Carol and Mike sailed (actually motored because that is what you mostly do on the ICW) for 3 days, stopping in Georgetown and McClellanville, before arriving in Charleston SC. They flew home and we are still here. Because we are cruisers, our plans change frequently, just like the weather.
We have decide to stay here in Charleston, where we will have ample time to get the needed boat projects done, before we head north on the Great Loop trip in April. It is lovely here, now that the sever cold snap has moved on, and we are looking forward to really getting to know Charleston! We wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR and FAIRWINDS from

Below you can open the attachment to check out the details of our sailing adventure from NY to NC. There is a short version at the top, and then the detailed version further down. If you have trouble opening it, please let me know. I am afraid that I am still in the learning process of all this web site business, so your input is greatly appreciated. It is just our way to let anyone who is interested, know what we are up to. The hardest part is finding time to select a few, of the many photos I take, and do the actual writing. But I hope that it is a way for us to stay connected to you all! As for the photos, I found opening them as large thumbnails works the best.
WE WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON

Maine to New York City - October 26 - November 15th, 2009
OUR JOURNEY ABOARD FELIX BEGINS: We made it all the way from Maine through New England to New York, New York with generally good, but cold weather with only a few bad days of wind and rain, when we prudently stayed put in protected bays or marinas. As is describe in more detail below, we left South Freeport, Maine, made it to the Cape Cod Canal with stops in Portsmouth, NH, Rockport, Mass, and Scituate, Mass. Then we cut across Buzzards Bay to the Island of Cuttyhunk, Mass, across Rhode Island Sound to Point Judith, RI, then down the Connecticut shoreline, stopping in Westbrook, and Norwalk, before crossing Long Island Sound to Port Washington in Manhasset Bay, NY. After a day trip by train into New York City for sight seeing, we transited the East River through the heart of NY City, to Staten Island, were we are safely tucked into the Great Kills Yacht Culb, waiting out winds and huge seas produced by Hurricane Ida. Since it appears that we will be for about a week, Jack decided it was an opportunity to return to Maine by train to get the truck, which he is now driving to his brother Charlie's, in Florida. I am safe and sound, riding out the storm.
South Freeport, Maine to Cape Cod Canal
DAILY DETAILS:
October 26, 2009 (Monday) We pulled away from the dock at 8:15 am, leaving South Freeport, Maine behind. It was absolutely a perfect beginning, sunny, calm and warm - well, except for the zillion lobster pot buoys we had to dodge. We had assumed that once we got out past the islands, in deeper water, we would be n the clear of the pots, but boy were we wrong. We ended up dodging pots, which took one, if not both of us, on strict surveillance at all times, until be entered Long Island Sound, many days later. For those who are unfamiliar with lobster pots, they sit on the bottom of the ocean floor with a line extending to the surface, and a buoy attached at the top identifying who's pot it belongs to and a way to retrieve it. The danger lies in us hitting the buoy, getting the line wrapped around our engine propeller, and thus stopping our progress until someone - that being me - dons a wet suit and climbs into the bone chilling sea to cut the line loose. I grew out of my heavy wet suit years ago, so we were diligent about dodging the pots. I dare say, that when waving to the lobster fisherman as we would pass, my wave was a slight finger wave, and I doubt that I will ever eat another lobster again! Day one was going so well, the Atlantic so gentle, that we pushed all the way to Portsmouth NH, but unfortunately we were a bit late and the sun had set, so our first attempt to tie Felix to a mooring ball, was in the dark. It was also the first time I was at the helm with Jack on the bow, trying to pick up a "new to us" type of mooring ball. After we finally got attached, and apologized for the curt words exchanged during our anxious moments, we had a calm and peaceful night. A great beginning for our journey on Felix!
October 27, 2009 (Tuesday) The day was cloudy with lumpy seas. Sort of like riding with our friend Carol, when she is 4 wheeling over boulders - up, down, left, right, with no rhyme or rhythm - just bouncy and a need to hang on. We arrived in Rockport, Mass about 3 pm, just before a storm set in, and was instructed to tie to a stand alone, floating dock, just outside a large stone wall. This wall protected the city's small inner harbor, which was filled with local, working fishing boats and surrounded with beautiful, quaint shops, art galleries and restaurants.
October 27, 2009 (Wednesday) The brunt of the storm that brought heavy rain, gusty winds, and surprisingly choppy seas to this outer harbor, kept us from going ashore that day, and even brought out the harbor master in his boat to extend extra lines from another buoy to help keep us, and the dock, in place.
October 28th, 2009 (Thursday) The storm subsided and bit and we were able to row the dinghy around into the inner harbor and enjoyed a lovely walk around town. It was my first major walk with my airboot/cast but the galleries, shops and wonderful photographic scenes of old buildings, boats, and beaches, kept my mind off of my swollen, aching ankle. We also had a delicious dinner at a popular seafood restaurant, which is always a treat, because we eat most of our meals on the boat.
October 29, 2009 (Friday) We departed at 8:20 am into calm winds, and gentle easy swells, and after motoring for 5 hours arrived in Scituate Bay just before the afternoon winds started to pick up. After fueling, we tied to a marina dock, our cheapest of the entire trip, which only cost $10. a night.
October 30, 2009 (Saturday) HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Even though the wind blew like stink all day, we were happy tied to the dock and enjoyed a really fun city tradition of Trick & Treating on the Main Street. The 4 block main street was blocked from traffic, all the businesses were open with owners and employees dressed in costume and handed out candy, to ever 600 kids in every type of costume imaginable, who were escorted by parents, many of which were also dressed up.
November 1, 2009 (Sunday) We were treated to perfect conditions for a downwind sail all the way to Cape Cod Canal, where we actually had to slow down to time our transiting with favorable tidal currents. The saying "you can's buck the tide", is very meaningful here, as trying to go through against the tide is impossible. The canal, without the wind and sea swell influence was very calm and we easily transited in slightly over an hour. Going through the canal saves a trip all the way around Cape Cod, which has been the ruin of many a boat, especially at this time of year. After exiting the Canal at 1:30, we were able to make it partway across Buzzards Bay to Marion, Mass., where we tied up to the city dock just before sunset. A mooring ball at the marina adjacent to the city dock would have cost $40.00, so the free night seemed a better choice, even though slightly illegal. We left the next morning before anyone needed use of it.
Buzzards Bay to Long Island Sound
November 2, 2009 (Monday)
Under way at 7:00am with cloudy skies, but calm winds, which picked up and we were able to make another downwind jib sail across to Cuttyhunk Island, at the end of the Elizabeth Island chain which lies just west of Martha's Vineyard. As we approached the bay entrance, we could see across to Marthas Vineyard Island and the cliffs of Gay Head. We were just there in July, when this whole Felix adventure began, so it was nice to see something familiar. We had heard good things about Cuttyhunk, so was excited to be here, unfortunately, the town docks were already pulled up for the season, as were the close in mooring balls, so we had to anchor across the bay from town. Mother Nature, with the rain and winds that she brought that night, kept us from launching the dinghy, so we never did get to explore Cuttyhunk.
November 3, 2009 (Tuesday) Even though it still felt like the winds blowing pretty good, the weather forecast was favorable and Jack wanted to move on. As we eased out of the anchorage, into the sound, we were going with the wind and and were able to put the jib out and motor sail to Point Judith, RI. Until Jack decided, in his sometimes overly cautious manner, to take the long way around to the entrance of the bay, we had really nice conditions. His approach put us with the sea swells on our beam , and even though a catamaran might take them a bit better that a monahull, we still rolled from side to side and tossed a few things around in the cabin. Thankfully, when we finally rounded the breakwater and got into the protected bay, where the seas were flat and calm, and we were able to relaxed a bit, and look for a marina. Luckily, there was one that still had their docks in the water and hot showers. Even though the Bell View Marina was pretty high class and charged us $51.00 for a slip (a huge discount from their summer rates) they had terrific showers, which we needed desperately, so it was well worth it! Another sailboat, also headed south, who joined us on the dock for the night, gave us some good info as to how to get through our next obstacle and where our next stop might be. The obstacle was an area coming up, called "The Race", where the bay narrows creating very strong tidal currents which can produce dangerous conditions and which our guide books advised us to use extreme caution. Jack worked all evening checking the tides, and establishing a plan as to when and how to approach "The Race".
November 4th, 2009 (Wednesday) We left the dock, heading for Fisher Island, and an anchorage just prior to The Race, where we planned on spending the night before doing the narrow area the next day. However, since we were sailing with the tidal flow, we were making 7.5 knots, arrived earlier than planned, had wonderful conditions, so continued on through "The Race" without any problems and made it to Westbrook, on the Connecticut side of Long Island Sound. Brewers Marina even had a TV lounge for customers, and since we were the only ones there, we had the place to ourselves. The first TV or movie we had watched since our departure from Maine. Even though we both wish we had a few movies aboard, I have not missed TV, and have easily turned my interest to reading books. So far, I have read 3.
YUK - a computer glitch just erased my last ten days of details! I began wondering if it was worth rewriting, so decided to ask a friend for advice. "Do you think anyone is really interested in reading this stuff"? His answer was yes, so, if you are reading this, thank Jim, as he convinced me that at least HE would be reading it!
November 5, 2009 ( Thursday) Off again, and this leg took us to Norwalk Cove Marina, Norwalk, CT. We had many choices as to where to stop, but picked the furthermost we could get to in day light and had the most cruiser facilities, as the weather told us we may be here a day or two.
November 6, 2009 (Friday) Had fun doing laundry as I met a lovely lady, Claudia, and we were able to talk Boat Talk. ie "had a boat, bought a bigger boat, love the boat, Long Island Sound is a great place to cruise a boat, most friends don't understand living on a boat" etc. Jack walked into town, found a 'Mom and Pop' type grocery, where we were able to buy a few things. Being on the East Coast is like being in a different country for me. For Jack, it reminds him of his growing up in New Jersey.
November 7, 2009 (Saturday) Awoke to frost on the docks, with clear skies and little wind, which was right on the nose as we crossed Long Island Sound to the N.Y. side and tied to a city mooring ball at Port Washington, Manhasset Bay. As we crossed the bay, we were able to see the New York City skyline, and were quite excited about finally getting to New York, New York. Port Washington was quite lovely as it wrapped around the bay and also extended up into the hills. A launch service picked us up and took us to the city pier, were we began our walking exploration. We found an old time hardware store that had some screws I had been looking for since Maine, and a church bazaar where we picked up some treasures for the boat. I am still in the progress of equipping Felix and making her feel like home, and a rummage sale is my kind of place to shop.
November 8, 2009 (Sunday) The launch picked us up at 8am and we were off on the train to Penn station to explore Manhattan. It was a clear, sunny, 70 degree day that was absolutely, spectacular! Our first stop was the Empire State Building where it was exciting to see the East River, where we would be tomorrow and the Hudson River, where we will be next spring. We then began walking towards Central Park, but opted to ride the subway as far as Columbus Circle, where we entered the park and walked for miles. We ducked into the Guggenheim Museum for a few minutes, but did not have much time, as we needed to get back to Port Washington, before the launch service stopped running, at sunset.
New York, New York - here we come!
November 9, 2009 (Monday) The BIG DEAL about transiting the East River that runs right through New York City, is a section called HELL GATE. Again, this is where the river narrows and the tidal influence causes lots of currents and whirlpools which can toss a boat around every which way. This, combined with a possible horrid wind chop and exacerbated with heavy commercial boat traffic creates a need for good planning and a lot of luck. According to our tide tables, the best time to transit this area was in the middle of the night, but we decided that was not an option, as night sailing this area poses other risks. So, we were up by 5am, slipped off the mooring ball by 5:30, and with me on the bow using a huge spot light to see any obstacles in the anchorage, we slowly motored out of Manhasset Bay. As dawn began to break, which helped light our way, we approached the sound, and turned the corner towards New York City, just as the sun began to rise. The chill in the air was warmed by the sun, the water was quite calm, and our excitement was mounting, as we dashed towards the City and Hell Gate. Hell Gate is where the Harlem River flows into the East River, just east of Manhattans upper east side. I was able to take a photo of our chart plotter and document that we actually were doing 10.2 knots in the middle of it! This, on a boat, is really flying, as our boater friends can appreciate. Anyway, we had very little traffic except for airplanes as they passed over us, landing at Laguardia Air Port, off on our port side. Felix and Jack handled the swirling tidal waters just fine. I spent my time taking photos of the Manhattan skyline, the bridges as we went under them, the commuter ferries that zipped in and out across the river, and finally, as we worked our way to the south end, of the Staten Island ferries and the Statue of Liberty. This is the point to which we will be returning next spring as we travel up the Hudson River. Days do not get better than this!
We proceeded around to the south end of Staten Island to the Great Kills Yacht Club. One of the YC members, John, is a "great looper" (did it in 2003) and helps to accommodate other cruisers. The club has nice amenities, everyone is very friendly, and it is located in a very well protected area, a good place to be to ride out the upcoming storm - Hurricane Ida.
November 10, 2009 (Tuesday) The train took us to the Staten Island Ferry, which took us to the southern tip of Manhattan. After exploring South Seaport Village, we caught a glimpse of Wall Street, before taking the subway to Columbus Circle, where we met Dee Ann, Jack's oldest daughter. We had a great time with her, exploring the local area including a gigantic Whole Foods Market, ate lunch at a nifty little place, walked to the new Hudson River Park, then back by Lincoln Center and made it back to catch the subway just as the lights were coming on in New York City. The nighttime skyline view of Manhattan, from the Staten Island Ferry, was picture perfect! Another, terrific day!
Novemer 11, 2009 (Wednesday) The day was spent getting caught up on a few boat projects, plus Jack decided that since Hurricane Ida was producing 45k winds and 15 foot seas off the Coast here, and the forecast did not look for several days, he would go to Maine and pick up the truck.
November 12, 2009 (Thursday) Jack took a train, the ferry, and a subway, to Penn Station then two trains and a taxi to get to the truck in Maine. He drove all night to get back to the boat. I hunkered down, here on the boat, feeling quite safe and warm, and weathered out the storm.
November 13 - 16th 2009 Jack left for his brother Charlie's, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he will park the truck, and fly back here on the 17th. The weather forecast looks good for leaving here on the 18th. We do need a good weather window, as from here, we have to jump out into the Atlantic for a 24 hour stretch down to Cape May, where we will enter the Delaware River and protected waters. I will keep busy boat stuff, finally viewing some of the many photos I have taken, and put these pages on the site.
I will send an email to let you all know when I update it next time. Fairwinds Lynn and Jack aboard Felix
October 25 Ready to Go!
Written by Lynn (with occasional comments from the other half)
Upon completing the purchase of our new catamaran sailboat, Felix, and giving the boat yard instructions for work to be done, we left Maine for a quick trip to Colorado, as we needed to return to the boat as soon as we could and sail south before the snow started to fly. Even though we were in a fast mode, we did enjoy many of the scenic byways of New Hampshire, Vermont, Montreal, Ontario, Wisconsin and down through the Dakotas, on our way home. This drive completed Jack's visiting every state in the USA (I checked one item off my bucket list) and a chance for us to see some fabulous scenery, plus get a glimpse of some of the areas we plan on sailing to next year, up in the Great Lakes region.
Our planned 2 weeks in Colorado were progressing well as we found a great tenant for our house and were moving all of our personal belongings, including the Tiger RV, into a storage unit. Then things changed when I fell on the stairs, fractured my right ankle in two places, and had to have surgery with 2 screws to put it back together again. Fortunately, we have great friends and family who helped us finish packing and moving and gave me a place to stay while I was recuperating. Jack, needing to get back to the boat and oversee all the projects, drove to Maine by himself, with the truck fully loaded with all our boat and new home STUFF, plus, of course, my kayak. (Nothing like a little "alone time" to make a guy really appreciate the other half.)
Felix remained inside a huge boat/airplane hangar type shed, which made living aboard a bit difficult, albeit a bit warmer, until we were launched on Friday, Oct 16th (It was really weird to be in the hanger with the door closed. I couldn't tell night from day. I misread my watch one night and got up and dressed quickly and rushed outside, only to find it was 3 am and total darkness) I was able to fly out and join Jack on Oct 6th, after receiving a new cast - a huge removable air boot, which allowed me to start putting some weight on the mending ankle. Thank goodness for those electric carts in many of the stores, as they made it possible for me to shop for food, supplies, and all the goodies to make Felix feel like home. We are also lucky to be staying at the dock, here at Brewers South Freeport Marina, as we have power for our much needed electric heaters, which is making our living aboard, a lot more comfortable. Every day, has been a different weather day, here in Maine - some being beautiful, some quite wet, and then others very nippy, especially one morning when the docks were covered with frost! The beauty of the fall colors in the trees, the incredible houses, barns, and beautiful yards, plus the fabulous shoreline, with bays, islands, rivers, and estuaries everywhere, has impressed and captivated both of us. A new acquaintance, also someone sailing south, who has cruised extensively, says that Maine has the best "gunk holing" ground in the world. I believe him, as it is a truly magnificant place, and perhaps one day we will return.
Now that all of the major projects have been completed on Felix and she has been equipped with Jack's new toys, including a 12" chart plotter, radar, auto pilot, electric windlass (at my age, with my back, I dont do manual winlasses any more) we are almost ready to go! My ankle is healing well and I should be able to discard the air boot by Nov. 1st, which will allow me to maneuver a lot better around the boat. So, when we get a good weather window, we will be sailing out through the islands, lobster pots, and reefs on our way to Cape Cod Canal, Long Island Sound and New York City, making a few stops along the way. While in NY, we are really looking forward to seeing Jack's daughter, Dee Ann and her husband Roger, bisides the regular sightseeing, before heading south in the ICW (inter coast waterway).
Hope you are all having a wonderful Fall season and please email when you can, as we love hearing about your adventures as well. Fairwinds from Lynn and Jack aboard Felix
WE BOUGHT THE BOAT!
Life is a great voyage and Jack and I are beginning our next adventure. Most of you may know that we sold Fairwind in May. Then, because a lady from Martha's Vineyard wanted to exchange her house for ours, we began a 1 1/2 month driving/camping trip to the northeast. During our trip, a catamaran sailboat that we have been interested in came on the market in Freeport, Maine, where we were to be driving in the next few days. This is actually the same exact boat that we saw and liked in Fort Lauderdale 2 years ago - which initiated our change of plans and the sale of Fairwind. We are now the happy owners of "Felix" a 34' Catalac, English built, 1985, catamaran. The name Felix comes from the cartoon caracter, Felix the cat,, but it also means "Lucky"! in Latin. Jack and I, indeed, feel very lucky!
Tomorrow, we will be leaving Maine on our way back to Colorado via numerous National Geographic Scenic Byways. After taking care of the house and loading our old Tundra truck with boat gear and kayak, we will drive back to Maine and ready the boat for sailing south. We should reach the Chesapeake sometime in October, stay there until December 1st, before heading on to Florida, the Bahamas, Florida Keys and Everglades, all of which should take up most of the winter. Then the BIG TRIP begins.
Jack has dreamed about this trip, "THE GREAT LOOP" for many years, and now he has the perfect boat in which to do it. The Great Loop will take us up the Intercoastal Water Way to New York, up the Hudson, through Lake Champlain to Montreal and the St Lawrence River. Then we will cruise the Great Lakes to Chicago, up the Illinois River to the Mississippi, down to the Ohio, up to the Tennesee and the Tenn-Tom River-Canal system and on to Mobile, Alabama. Once we reach the Gulf and go on to the west coast of Florida, we will have completed " The Great Loop". Due to Mother Nature, such as hurricanes and cold and slow boating to "smell the roses" along the way, this loop takes a full year to complete.
Hopefully we will figure out how to do a web site so anyone who wants to know where we are can ckeck up on us. Felix has a guest berth, so for those of you who may be interested, you are invited to come visit.
Best wishes to you all ------- and fairwinds, Lynn and Jack -- soon to be on Felix
