FACTS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
15 seconds to a healthier you
It is that time of year again when so many of us seem to be missing school and work due to sickness. One sure way to help fight off the germs that can make us sick is proper hand washing. Hand washing is the first line of defense that we have to keep harmful germs out of our bodies. It is quick, easy, and cost very little except our time.
Germs can be transmitted in many ways including:
touching others dirty hands changing dirty diapers
contaminated water and food contaminated surfaces
droplets released when someone through a sick person's body fluids
when they sneeze or cough
Surfaces high on the germ list:
work desk kitchen sink dishcloth/sponges
garbage cans refrigerator telephone receiver
bathroom doorknob keyboards escalator handrails
shopping cart handles pens/pencils remote controls
light switches pet cages toys
***There are about 21,000 germs per square inch on work desks about 400 times more than the average toilet seat.
When to wash your hands:
After going to the toilet or changing diapers After coughing or sneezing
When hands are visibly soiled After smoking, eating drinking
Before and after handling raw food Before handling any other food
After playing/working outside After touching animals
Before eating Before putting in contacts
After touching sores, lacerations or infected areas When arriving at work/school
How to wash your hands:
Soap+running water+ friction+15 seconds=germ free hands
wet your hands
add soap
point fingers down
rub hand vigorously for 15 seconds
*** wash all surfaces of hands including wrists, between fingers and under nails.

Note: If soap and water is not available, use alcohol wipes or gel.
Recently the 3rd and 5th grade classes talked about how to stay healthy during the H1N1 flu outbreak. They had so many great comments and ideas and they are all so smart.
What you need to do to stay healthy:
wash your hands,
cover cough and sneezes,
don't touch eyes, nose or mouth,
clean off your class room surface, light switches, and door knobs,
If your sick tell an adult,
if your sick stay home,
when you feel better get a new toothbrush.
