Imagine ONE WOMAN caring for 984 orphan children

Nomsa and her volunteers care for over 984 orphan children. Help us show Nomsa that she is not alone; there are others who care about these precious children. Your donation will help us start construction on a multi-purpose building in Swaziland, Africa. A sustainable place where children - with no parents to care for them - will be safe, fed, and taught. We are just $8,000 away from starting construction!

Thank you for supporting A Friend in Need. Your donations help us work more closely with individuals and communities who are desperately trying to help themselves.  With your help, we can give more than just a hand out. We can give people the tools they need to sustain themselves.

984 Ophans

Once upon a time in a land far, far away there was a mountain. And on this mountain lived 984 orphans. There were 984 orphans and one woman who cared for them, a woman named Nomsa. It seems unimaginable that one woman could care for almost a thousand children, doesn't it? However, this is a true story. When we visited Swaziland last year we saw first hand this incredible story and met a true heroine, Nomsa. We knew we had to do something to help - to let Nomsa know she is not alone. To let her know there are others who care about these precious orphans.

A Friend in Need is raising funds to help build Nomsa's orphans a much needed multipurpose building which will serve as a work space, gathering place, and safe haven for the orphans.

We know these are trying economic times for many of us, but we are asking you to consider taking the money you might spend on a Happy Meal, movie ticket, or coffee at Starbuck's and invest it in something so much more valuable - the life of a child.

Thank You Students

Thank you to the student at St. Lucy's for reaching out to children in need. The students will walk 6,000 steps to represent the 6,000 children that lose a parent to AIDS every day!

AFIN Volunteer of the Year

AFIN: With your busy job, how do you find time to volunteer?

BL: Well, I just do. I feel that helping the kids and families is more important than my day-to-day issues. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about my next meal or if I will make it through another day. So whenever I can do something for AFIN I do it.

AFIN: How did you first get involved with AFIN?

BL: I knew someone who was working on huts for an AFIN fundraiser and I volunteered to help. That was 3 years ago & we're still using those huts today.

AFIN: Those huts really make AFIN fundraisers special. What's your most memorable fundraiser?

BL: We held a fundraiser at the Kemper Center. We literally had a small village by the time we were done. It was pretty cool to see what all the volunteers were able to build with what little supplies we had.

AFIN: Any thoughts for the next AFIN fundraiser?

BL: Something fun where I can build something again!! I have given myself the title of "builder" in the group and while others come up with the ideas I do what I can to bring them to life. I will do whatever I can to help with any event big or small.

AFIN: What can you tell people who may be thinking of volunteering with AFIN?

BL: Do it! AFIN has brought me a lot of happiness, knowing I am doing good and helping others who can't help themselves. Not to mention all the incredible people I have had the joy of getting to know.
