Welcome to Terry's Alfa site

My passion for Alfa Romeos started in the 60's and has not let up yet.  Feel free to peruse pictures of past and present projects, Alfa parts and restoration parts I have made.

This site documents this passion in my restoration efforts, focusing on my present project: restoring a 1965 Giulia Spider Veloce, AR390381.  Why this particular car?  Here's the story...

 

While stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1966, I bought a 1967 Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior with a fellow Army Lieutenant.  I fell in love with Alfas through that car.  I sold my interest in it when I was transferred to Viet Nam.  The thought of owning another Alfa sustained me while I was there.  When I got back "to the world" in April, 1969, I looked for another Alfa.  I found one in Sunntvale, California, not far from my home in San Jose and bought a red 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce.  I was in love!  She was my constant companion on the winding roads of Northern California. 

I was also in trouble.  I got eight speeding tickets in eight months and the State of California took my license away for five months!  I ended up trading her in on a Datsun pickup truck and driving back to Massachusetts to care for my ailing grandparents in 1971.  My Alfa dreams on hold, I married in 1972, had a family and career, and moved to Longmeadow, Massachusetts, in 1977.

Toward the end of my career with the phone company, I got the opportunity to purchase a 1979 Spider Veloce and restored it with my brother in Prescott, Arizona.  That car now resides with me in Melbourne, Florida.  In the meantime, I have purchased, restored and sold a 1974 GTV and a 1977 Spider Veloce, andf flipped a '76 Spider Veloce project car.  These efforts were taken to placate my desire for a '65 Veloce and my search continued.

I finally located my elusive dream car in Ohio and, after about four years of negotiation, I flew out to Akron and spent time looking her over.  I gave the guy a down payment and flew home.  I drove my truck back to Ohio with a trailer and bought her and trailered her back to Massachusetts.  My retirement from the phone company in 2003, due to an offer I could not refuse, has afforded me the time and inclination to undertake its restoration.  I will attempt to document this effort in narrative and photos here.

I have since moved permanently to Melbourne, Florida, and have a new house and shop set up there.

"Mickey Mouse Ears" wing nuts that hold the two halves of the airbox together.  Two are needed for each airbox.  They are not easy to come by.  I bead blasted, plated, and polished these.

Wrong airbox top for my car.  It has the vent pipe coming out of it and is too short of a snorkel.

Two airboxes.  One has the reversed "Z" and round casting marks all over it.  The other has a "Z" cast on it and is smooth.  Both have the flattened area on one end.
