All of the kids are settled into their new homes and adjusting to family life.  One of these days spring will start knocking on the door, the weather will warm up and we will all be enjoying more time in the great outdoors.

Remember, the more exercise these kids kids, the more you will enjoy being around them.

Don't forget to sign them up for puppy class.  The sicialization they receive in this class is SO important, and you will learn some basic obedience as well.

As always, if you ever have any questions, Anna, Penny and I are always here to listen to you vent about common puppy issues, offer support and offer advice.  If there is ever an emergency, feel free to call us at any time (even the middle of the nite) and we will do what we can to help.  You are all a part of our family now, and will be treated as such.

 

We also want to see those pictures and hear the stories - just like kids, what isnt funny at the moment, in time will bring a good chukle.  We have been there, we have all 3 raised several puppies (and lived thru it).  So there isnt much your new pup can do that we havent already dealt with.

On Friday, the kids got their longest car ride, and did surprisingly well.  They are now all situated at their luxurious new digs at Aunt Pennys home in Hickory. 

And they got an even bigger surprise.  It snowed!  We will get some pictures up of the kids playing in the snow shortly.  They were't quite sure of it at first, but quickly adapted.  If it weren't for the snow being up to their bellies, they may have enjoyed it more.  There is 1 puppy moving to Fla - I think the others will be jeaolous if this weather continues.

We will be doing the temperament testing shortly, and will have it narrowed down as to which puppy buyers get a boy or girl.  We won't be able to make final decisions until we do the conformation evaluations next week.

We took an outing into the big wide world this afternoon.  Boy, did the kids have a blast.  They ran, and chased the kitty, chased Graham, chased each other, chased the kitty some more....

Right now, they are very good about coming when you call them.  But that will unfortunately change as they gain more confidence and independance. 

They are growing like weeds, and getting really leggy these days.  Hopefully our weather will stay decent and they will get more outside time before heading to their new homes.

They had a visit from puppy buyers from a previous litter (as youc an see from the pics) that had to come and get a puppy fix.  We have been introducing them to new people, car rides etc.  So much to learn and see before leaving the comfort of home.

Once again, we have had to upgrade "security".  The kids had figured out a way to climb over Koios' access gate and make a mess of the rest of the office.

So, they now have the big crate and they can all stretch out in it, and I can attatch the expen to the door of the crate and hope they dont learn to climb the full height (like mom did at the age!)

They are getting so brave, running from the living room to their room and back on their own.  Exploring every little thing and really playing with the kitty. (we found the kitty and her littermates when they were 4 weeks old.  Tyche took them as her own and they grew up assuming they were dogs).  Such a site to see the puppies and kitty wrestling.

The kids are getting so big!  They now range in weight from 4.2 pounds to 3.1 pounds.

We are letting them play in the living room and they are meeting their extended family - Tyche and Blue our other V's and Mowie the kitty.  So many new things to see and play with in there.

We are experimenting with differnet toys - different textures and different noises.  We also get them out for one on one intereaction so that they dont rely on each other for security.

Koios decided that now that they have sharp teeth, she isn't interested in nursing them anymore.  So they have been eating puppy gruel.  It will slowly be trasitioned to puppy food, so that by the time they go to their new homes, they will be eating dry puppy food without any problems.  We have also put regular buckle collars on them.  The colors are the same, except for Yukon who is currently naked.  I am still trying to locate an orange collar for him.

Since max was trying to figure out an escape plan from the whelping box, we decided it was time they moved into the big kids room.  The kids are 3 weeks old today.

Their personalities are starting to show thru and they are really interacting with each other - pawing and biting at one another.

They will get their first deworming done today - will be sure to get pics of that as it is not a very palatable taste.

All of the kids now have their eyes open and are trying out their sea legs.  Some are more stable on all 4 than others.  They are also starting to play with each other - biting and pawing at one another.

It is time to move them out of the whelping box and into a bigger (taller) pen.  As you can see from the latest video, max is trying to figure out if there is a way out of his confinement.  Momma cleared the pen (18") by 5 weeks and a baby gate at 8 weeks - lets hope the kids dont follow suit.

Ms Holly was the brave one who decided to see what the world really looks like.  She cracked one eye yesterday afternoon, and the other this morning.  A few others have started raising their brows, so I am sure their eyes will be opening shortly.  They are starting to get muchstronger legs and are really trying hard to get up on them.  Trouble is, they can get up on the back and try to take a step, but forget about the front end.  Max and Yukon are trying hard to toddle around and I will try to get some video of them later today.  Koios is being a great mom, which I am so thankful for.

Today the babies had to have their tails cropped and dew claws removed.  The girls were much more whiney than the boys, but they were all troopers.  We will be changing their "collars" today because they are growing SO fast, the existing ones are geting too snug.  Don't worry, everyone will remain in the same color, just a bit bigger size.

The biggest puppy - Holly, now weighs close to 19 oz, and the smallest is Vixen at just over 13 oz.  They have all had very good weight gain, so we have no concerns there.

Koios stuck to the vets prediction and held out till Christmas Eve.  We have 8 very healthy puppies, 4 boys and 4 girls

 

In order of birth we have

 

Faith with the pink ribbon, born at 3:15 am  

Max with the red ribbon, born at 3:45 

Holly with the green ribbon, born at 4:00 

Wynter with the white ribbon, born at 4:30 

Vixen with the purple ribbon, born at 4:45 

Nick with the blue ribbon, born at 5:45 

Kris with the brown ribbon, born at 6:25 

Yukon (Cornelius) with the orange ribbon, born at 7:15 am

 

The puppies weighed between 8.25 oz and 12.38 oz

Koios has never been one to follow the rules, but of course now, she seems pretty intent to stick to the xmas eve delivery date that the vet threw out there.  Now remember, xmas eve starts at 12:01 tonite!

Koios is still pretty animated and waddeling around the yard with the other dogs.  Her temperature has dropped and she is picking at her food.

Koios is doing her best to ensure those puppies come out fit and active.  She isnt willing to give up on her antics of chasing squirells and running circles around our other 2 V's.  She is however, having a hard time comprehending how the other 2 have gotten so much faster than her and why she gets winded so quickly.

She has an xray scheduled for next Thursday.  We will be able to get a more accurate count of how many puppies we are cooking and I will be sure to take a picture to post.

 As you can see from the pictures, she is definitely filling out.  She is much more lethargic these days, preferring to curl up in the blankets over tearing around chasing the squirrels.

She is having a hard time understanding why she is now the slowest one of the bunch instead of the crazy one ripping and running in circles around the other dogs.

Koios has an u/s scheduled for 2:00 Monday afternoon.  We will get confirmation on the pregnancy and our first look at the young 'uns.

I got a call from the repro specialist today inquiring on the breeding attempts over the weekend.  She was glad to hear all went well in that regard.

She gave us an estimated due date of December 24!  So Santa will be delivering Koios' puppies - kind of fitting, if you know Koios.

She mentioned that we could schedule an ultrasound for Nov 23 to confirm the pregnancy, and we can do an xray Dec  to give us an approximate number of puppies.

Hopefully, in a few weeks, Koios will let us know wether she is pregnant or not.

When I asked my 6 year old how many babies Koios was cooking, he thoughtfully looked her over, and replied with an emphatic "18!"....God help me

We did another blood draw Thursday and got the call Friday morning that it was time to make the drive the Virginia.  Everything was in order.

Ben was enamored at first sight of Koios and they wasted no time getting down to business.  Saturday was a nice relaxing day for Koios, a little romp in the country air was just what she needed.  Ben on the other hand, very much wanted to spend every minute with her.

Sunday they said their good byes.

Now we wait with baited breath.  After all these years, will there be puppies in our future?  If so, how many? And the edd - right around Christmas!

We are now working with a reproduction specialist in Sanford.  Yes, even dogs get to go to the specialist for assistance in getting pregnant.

Blood drawn on several more occassions shows that we are actually on the track to ovulation.  Now we just wait for the magic number.

Given Koios' history, we want to be sure to keep an eye on her hormone levels.  So we begin progesterone testing.  This testing will track her levels and let us know exactly when (or if) she ovulates.  Todays results were low - <.2

We will do another test in a few days to see if the number changes.

We really were never sure (although always hopeful) that this day would come.  Today is day 1 of Koios cycle.  Koios has never been one to follow the rules, and I am sure this experience will be no different.
