September 2001 - I was 48 and married to Jeanne for four years. We were staying at a motel in the White Mountains for a long weekend. The plan was to drive over to the Mount Washington Cog Railroad and take the train to the summit. We bought our round trip tickets and took the cog to the summit. We were at the summit when Jeanne said to me she would like to hike this mountain. I told her she was crazy and that I would never do it, only crazy people hike up mountains like this. Well Jeanne kept after me saying things like she wanted to hike the Appellation Trail and wanted to hike mountains and if I didn't join her that would be ok because she would join a women's hiking club. I told her that there was no way she could hike and stay out in the woods overnight. This was her challenge, she said she could and the challenge was on.
New Hampshire has 48 4000 foot mountains. Once you complete all of them you can submit your name to receive a certificate and patch for your accomplishment.
Hiking in New Hampshire is quite different than anywhere else in the US. Many of the trails have rocks and tree roots that you must maneuver carefully or risk the chance of twisting an ankle. Of the 4000-6000 foot mountains the accent is between 1000-4000 usually within a couple miles.
Wow - all I can say is wow! You have accomplished and seen so much. I can't think of a more intimate way to see the country than walking it. And your smiles say it all. Whatever sacrifice or discomfort you've had to endure it has obviously been worth it to you both. And, thanks to the breadth of this country and others you'll have many other new regions to hike and explore. And now that you have this site, that means we'll see it too.
Your website is terrific. I clicked on the slide show for each one of your trips. While photos can never really put you there, it's certainly obvious to me that these places are so very unique and special. So keep it up. We'll look forward to the next installment.
