Hi! I'm Allison Callahan and I teach reading and math intervention to first, second and third grade students at Sugar Hill Elementary.
A typical reading session lasts 45 minutes. I begin each segment reading individually and taking a running record with one child. The running record is on a book that was read one time the previous day. I keep track of the number and type of errors which allows me to plan for upcoming lessons based on this data. The other children are reading on the computers, reading from their independent book bags, or writing familiar words to practice spelling and fluency. Once we are together as a group again, we read a familiar book together and then practice a new skill. We do a picture walk through our new book, and I point out any words they may have trouble with. Next, we read the story together and then complete an activity that goes along with the our new book. This new book will be sent home the following day.
Every child should be taking four or five familiar books home every night. It is extremely important that children read every day.
Our math class varies each week. I base my instruction off of the needs of my students. I work very closely with the classroom teachers in order to supplement the regular classroom. We play lots of math games every day and learn different ways to problem solve. Our forty-five minute slot is packed full of exciting, hands on activities.
I have been married to a wonderful man, Mike, for 13 years.
We have 2 beautiful boys, Michael and Andrew.
Michael is a 4th Grade student at Sugar Hill in Mrs. Langley's class and Andrew is a 2nd grade student in Mrs. Chin's class.
We have one cat that celebrated its 16 year birthday on April 1st.
We recently rescued the cutest dog ever!!
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University.
I have been teaching for 14 years.
