Howard

Just a crop of Howard, giving me the eye.
Face front.jpg
Face front.jpg
He was in a mood (aren't cats always in a mood?) and really didn't care that I was on the floor in front of him; he wasn't going to cuddle with me. I guess I should say he wasn't in the mood.
Paying attention.jpg
Paying attention.jpg
Isaac walked through the room - at a safe distance. They have this love-hate relationship. Howard kept his focus on Ike until it was safe to go to sleep again.
The artist pose.jpg
The artist pose.jpg
This pose reminded me of a painting and artist I cannot name. I just thought it quite artistic, maybe even poetic.

Icy Art.jpg
Icy Art.jpg
As I walked down the hallway toward my classroom on this -15 degree morning, this single frozen trickle, attached to the glass door at the end of the hallway, caught my attention. I caught it's image on my camera.

Life is art.

Morning View.jpg
Morning View.jpg
“If you want to be reminded of the love of the Lord, just watch the sunrise.”
― Jeannette WallsHalf Broke Horses
(I've read this book - good one.  Autobiography of sorts.)

In reality, the sky was more pink and blue, not looking quite so on fire. I think God really likes to paint in the early morning and at the end of the day.

What makes morning scenes like this even more meaningful is, when I get to school, other teachers and my students will remark, "Did you see that sunrise this morning?"

Yes. Yes, I did.

Down the driveway at the end of the day.jpg
Down the driveway at the end of the day.jpg
Walking back to town from the farm the other night, I once again marveled at how beautiful the winter sky can be at dusk, the colors allowed to shine against the white snow. I was too late to actually get the sun still in the sky, but it left whispers of color long enough to light my way home.

Ok. I guess winter isn't so bad.

Old County Records.jpg
Old County Records.jpg
Taken in the basement of the Hamlin County Courthouse, I shot this picture in a room that was almost completely dark except for a sliver of sunlight coming through the small window. I couldn't read the bindings but I knew the books were old record books, but I didn't realize how old until I uploaded this photograph after I got home. 120 years of tax information, history, and archival intrigue. I wonder what it says about my relatives? Do I really want to know?

Historical marker.JPG
Historical marker.JPG

This mailbox, no longer filled with birthday cards and bills but only with cobwebs and nests, is the only thing that marks the spot of where a farmstead once stood, a place where families and hopes were raised, love and memories were made. The landscape is now bare except for it, still standing sentinel at the end of a driveway now reassigned as an approach.

Some may see the absence of this farm, absent of a family for many years, as sad, and maybe it is, the physical reminder no longer there of what once was and most likely won’t ever be here, in this place, again. But for those who lived, loved and laughed here, the excavators, backhoes and fires didn’t erase the memories and the stories. Those will continue to propagate just like the corn or soybeans that will be planted here next spring.

Up close, it looks like a large shredded wheat. From the road, a whole field of snow-topped bales looks like frosted mini-wheats. Well, at least to me it does.

Howard on the rocks.jpg
Howard is always good to hang out in the garden with me. I'm not sure what his role is; he doesn't help me weed, plant, harvest or winterize. I guess he's just there as company. That's important, too. Oh, and to chase the squirrels away if they should be so bold as to get too close. That's what he is, my defender.

My new pickup has a camera in the tailgate and the view comes up in my rearview mirror. Levi got silly with it and put his face up to it. If you look closley, our friend Seth is sitting in the back seat, so all three of us are actually in the mirror. Hanging out with those two guys is just one adventure after another....

The boys on the football field (in light blue) are my students; the "boy" in the combine is my brother. The football team won and my brother finished the field of soybeans. It was a good night for them all.

This is the newest addition to the family. Her name is Hattie Howard. (I called her Hattie; the boys call her Howard. Hence, the first and last name.) Her eyes are sparkly blue and she knows how to protect her food! I think she's even softening Jerry's anti-cat heart. He's been caught talking to and feeding her, but he'll deny it if you ask him about it!

Graycie
Graycie
Graycie is my teenaged girl cat. Soft, loveable, tentative Graycie. The last in the food line or out the door, the first to snuggle. However, not usually as aggressive as her brother Lewis, she will suddenly grab him around the neck with both paws and pummel his stomach with her hind feet. Graycie walks softly but carries a big kick.

Lacy weed at the lake.jpg
Lacy weed at the lake.jpg
The beautiful autumn bokeh (color in the background) is the reflection of a cottonwood tree on the water.

I think that's milkweed fluff caught on this weed.
Zooming across the lake.jpg
Zooming across the lake.jpg
This isn't a picture-perfect picture (pun intended) and, close-up, it's kind of grainy, but the cool part about this is that I am over a quarter of a mile away on the adjacent shoreline (of Lake Marsh), and I had my camera settings set somehow to obtain INCREDIBLE zooming power. Now I have to figure out I did that!

Risky at 55.JPG
Our county tax dollars at work - when entering this road from the west, the first sign says Minimum maintenace - travel at your own risk. Look closely at the sign further into the picture- it says Speed Limit 55. I guess it's okay to risk going 55 on this road with the ruts and grass strip down the middle for the WHOLE MILE, except where there's a mudhole across the whole "road."  *Geez*

I added another page to my site; Words. From time to time I will blog there. I should call it "Ramblings," as that is what I do best.
