Closed for the season.JPG
This was the other morning after the frosty night.

Levi in the Rearview Mirror.JPG
My new pickup has a camera in the tailgate and the view comes up in my rearview mirror. Levi got silly with it and put his face up to it. If you look closley, our friend Seth is sitting in the back seat, so all three of us are actually in the mirror. Hanging out with those two guys is just one adventure after another....

Elegy in a Country Churchyard.jpg
"Now fades the glimmering landscape on the sight,
And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,
And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds:"

Sunset-on-the-Snow.jpg 2013-01-06
Get in the car, boys. We're going on a field trip.

Fall reflection
Calm. Clear. Cold.

Post up
Standing sentinel between the road and the water, refusing to quit it's original job - hang on to the wire.

X? marks the spot
I have no idea what this means. Maybe it was to mark a good fishing spot.

Weed button
Dry and brittle, it stands bravely until the winter winds come to take it away. Then it will be game over.

Water+Reflection=Cool picture
No photo magic here. This is what the rock looked like, covered with moss and water and blanketed in sunshine.

Hiding Place
Wonder how many pheasants were watching me from the safety of the weeds?

Fossil Fish
No, not really, but the reflection created an interesting picture when combined with the barbed wire and debris.

A mile away

Morning swim

Layers of fall

Overlooking the bluff
A cedar tree stands alone, waiting for winter.
Fall 2012

Last in line
I don't know why these few stalks were left to guard the field. If I didn't know better, I'd say the combine operator may have been texting and driving. But I know better....

Fields of Dreams.JPG
These are my boys of fall - the team in the foreground and the farmers in the background. A typical sight in rural South Dakota on any given fall Friday night.
The boys on the football field (in light blue) are my students; the "boy" in the combine is my brother. The football team won and my brother finished the field of soybeans. It was a good night for them all.

Summer 2012

Latched for a long time.JPG

Minimum Maintenance?
No kidding. (Yes, there is/was a road there going into the trees.)

End of another summer day
I wonder how many sunsets this old barn and silo have seen? Just as many sunrises, I suppose, but more than the house that once stood there with them.

Make up your mind
Is it minimally maintained or closed all together? Guess the traveller has to find out on her own.

Reflections
An old granary is reflected in a ditch that still holds water on an otherwise scorching, dusty day.

Tiger Lily
Who is Tiger Lily anyway...?

Peony tears
Diamond-clear droplets of dew.

Morning refreshments
The droplets of dew shimmer like crystals in the morning sun. The flies slurp their hydration one droplet at a time.

Peony with a fly garnish
Fly's eye view of a beautiful bud

One foot on Presidents Day.jpg
Jerry stuck a ruler in the snow to measure it. Don't know if this is official, but it's got to be close.

Foot deep so far.jpg
I hate to say "so far," but it's not July yet...

West side of house 2-21-11.jpg
Cool formation as the wind swept the snow from the roof. (No, the picture isn't crooked; the solar light is.)

Who let the cat into the bag.jpg
Finally. A picture of Lewis. I went to grab my iTouch out of my purse and two yellow eyes were staring out at me from inside of my big red bucket of a school bag. Even Mary Poppins didn't have a cat in her bag.

Too fast to freeze.JPG
On the east side of the highway coming into Hayti from the south. The water continues to rush through that culvert from Lake Marsh on its way to Lake Poinsett and eventually to the Gulf of Mexico. (Seems like everything is going south these days...)

One beautiful winter day.JPG
This scene reminded me of a Bev Dolittle painting. There are no horses hidden in the trees, but I could imagine a few raccoons...

Graycie.jpg
This is Graycie Randolph. I call her Graycie. The boys call her Randolph. They designed microfleece after her fur - it's that soft.

P1060429.JPG
This is the newest addition to the family. Her name is Hattie Howard. (I called her Hattie; the boys call her Howard. Hence, the first and last name.) Her eyes are sparkly blue and she knows how to protect her food! I think she's even softening Jerry's anti-cat heart. He's been caught talking to and feeding her, but he'll deny it if you ask him about it!

Birthday roses.jpg
I received a dozen yellow/orange roses AND a dozen red roses for my birthday from my guys.

Graycie
Graycie is my teenaged girl cat. Soft, loveable, tentative Graycie. The last in the food line or out the door, the first to snuggle. However, not usually as aggressive as her brother Lewis, she will suddenly grab him around the neck with both paws and pummel his stomach with her hind feet. Graycie walks softly but carries a big kick.

Lacy weed at the lake.jpg
The beautiful autumn bokeh (color in the background) is the reflection of a cottonwood tree on the water.

Lacy weed.jpg
I think that's milkweed fluff caught on this weed.

Zooming across the lake.jpg
This isn't a picture-perfect picture (pun intended) and, close-up, it's kind of grainy, but the cool part about this is that I am over a quarter of a mile away on the adjacent shoreline (of Lake Marsh), and I had my camera settings set somehow to obtain INCREDIBLE zooming power. Now I have to figure out I did that!

Risky at 55.JPG
Our county tax dollars at work - when entering this road from the west, the first sign says Minimum maintenace - travel at your own risk. Look closely at the sign further into the picture- it says Speed Limit 55. I guess it's okay to risk going 55 on this road with the ruts and grass strip down the middle for the WHOLE MILE, except where there's a mudhole across the whole "road."
