The first course.  Polenta, of which I have had enough for a long time, sheep's cheese and sour cream.  I couldn't eat all of it.
DSC02911.JPG
DSC02911.JPG
After a glass of palinka, I nodded when the waiter suggested the sweet meated trout for dinner.  He wanted to give me more polenta.  I said, "NO!  PLEASE!  NO MORE POLENTA!"  I got potatoes instead.  And Attila had to debone and dehead the poor little guy for me like I was 4.  Surprisingly, I ate it all, and it wasn't so bad, especially with the garlic sauce.  In fact, I think it was the garlic sauce that made me order it.

Watch out: preservation nerdiness ahoy.  First time in my life that I've seen this tool used in person.  The glass strips measure the cracks in the render to determine how severe they are and if cracking is still occurring, etc.  Some of the glass strips were missing and cracked, so that means the cracking is still on-going and needs to be fixed.  (I took about 10 pictures of all the glass strips until our guide, Attila, made me stop so that I would remember that I was visiting a monastery).

Jewish cemetery in Gura Humorului where we stayed.  Did you know that the name Gura Humorului has nothing to do with humor?  Nope.  Even though we laughed a lot on the trip, humor is the name of the river, and gura means mouth.  I then learned that if you say "Gura!" in a very specific voice, it means, "Shu cho' mouf!"  otherwise known as "Shutup!"

This building is one of seven architectural phases of the entire museum; this phase was dedicated in 1907.  Love that Beaux-Arts!

This building was constructed in the 1920s/30s, and the building on the far right was built in 1886.  This museum is the oldest art museum west of the Allegheny Mountains, apparently.

Forget the date; it's old - mid 1700s anyway. Peter Harrison, arch. This isn't stone; it's rusticated wood (sand mixed in with the paint to make it look like wood). Very characteristic of this man's work. Newport, RI.

Cincinnati Union Terminal

We visited this train terminal turned museum today.  It is freakin' awesome.  Built in 1931, this train station functioned until 1972, became a shopping mall, and in the early 1980s, it became a collection of museums.  The Cincinnati History Museum, the Children's Museum, and the Cincinnati Natural History Museum are all inside.

Attendance has actually risen in recent months, and the museum thanks the recession.  People opt for this over more expensive day trips.  It made me consider Kansas City's Union Station's viability.  If only KC could bring more museums with revolving exhibits to its station.  I don't think KC even has a natural history museum; that could be interesting...

Downtown Lexington, Ky

I've been in Lexington - a city supposedly known for its history - one year, three weeks, and 6 days, and in just that short amount of time, I have witnessed the demolition of at least 23 buildings.  Some of these structures dated back to the early 1800s, but all were over 50 years old.  The largest chunk of the destruction happened in the supposed "urban" downtown (that's a topic for a different rant)One entire block, comprising 14 structures, was ripped down in a ceremony akin to a Nazi book burning in the 1930s.  Maniacal cackling accompanied bricks thrown at the prismatic glass transoms of the Dame building; all that was lacking was a huge bonfire.  Perhaps a better analogy would be that it was like watching your grandparents, who have always sheltered and comforted you, tortured to death.

In place of these small commercial buildings is planned a 35 storey office/retail/condo tower to encompass the entire block (click here for images).  I will refrain from reiterating all the bitterness of the last 6 months' effort to halt the demolition in order to have a majority of these buildings incorporated into an infill project that would be scaled to the downtown context.  I won't gripe about the downtown masterplan that was in place to prevent this type of destruction in favor of smart growth and was somehow overlooked, nor will I express my skeptism about the developer who has a history of taking on projects downtown where the old is leveled for a building that is never constructed, and where usable buildings once stood, there is a "public park" that looks too much like a seal pool at a zoo, only instead of bathing seals, there are bathing homeless persons.  I won't even mention the fact that the proposed building was supposedly built for a site in Atlanta and is supposed to be a LEED-certified building, and the debris from the demolition somehow ended up in a landfill.

Many of these buildings were not in the best shape, but few were irrepairable.  Some of the structures were nothing particularly special but together they represented the commercial history of downtown Lexington.  I don't understand how it benefits a community to destroy the very essence of that community and replace it with a generic, hardly third-tier piece of "architecture."  The more I see of so-called progress, the less and less I like it.  What ever happened to compromising?  Why does the developer get to shape a town with no public input, even though the public are the ones who have to deal with the developers' poor decisions?   What ever happened to the idea that elected officials are supposed to act on behalf of those who elected them, so when a majority of constituents (not to mention out-of-towners) repeatedly contact City Hall begging for the project to be halted, it happens?

The pictures in this album are of the buildings torn down.  I intended to document the entire process, but I frankly couldn't handle it.  I think the cackling and cheering few who were celebrating defeated my spirit: I wanted to chuck them into the prismatic glass.  I end this tirade with the following quote from Melissa Holbrook Pierson's book The Place You Love Is Gone:

Wherever you go, it is coming to get you. (You can't stop progress.)  ... Your job is to sit still and take it, and don't question where it comes from.  It can take pretty much everything you really care about or that makes your life worth living, but don't complain or you will be a sniveler who doesn't understand the nature of things, the inevitability of the inevitable.  Change is always called "progress" so you can't oppose it.

Check out Preserve Lexington's link on the right to see more about the history of the building and the implications of this development.

VSA - Newport, RI and the surrounding area

I recently spent 12 days in Rhode Island, attending the Victorian Society in America's Newport Summer School.  Amazing place, Newport.  The breadth of architecture spanned from the 1690s up through the 1930s, and these were just buildings we were able to tour.  Richard Guy Wilson, professor of architectural history at the University of Virginia, was our guide for the duration, and I can hardly imagine a better leader.  We would attend a lecture then go see what he was talking about.  I found my mind changing as I personally saw these buildings.  Example: The Isaac Bell House (1881, McKim, Mead, and White).  I studied a bit about this house last semester, and while I acknowledged that aspects were interesting (i.e. open floor plans, hidden entrances, all before Wright - HA!), I filed it away as just another nice house.  Walking through the door of that nice house last week and experiencing the unfurnished spaces in all their architectural glory was quite frankly moving.  (The light streaming in through the West windows on the stair could have something to do with it).  Even a recently uncovered contractor's scrawl from the 1880s was incredible to me, and all it said was "woodwork bone white."  A restorer's dream note right there.  This went from just another nice house to one of my favorite places in a matter of minutes.

I also had the chance to tour H.H. Richardson's Ames Gate Lodge (also in 1881; that was a good year) in North Easton, Mass.  I love Richardson.  There is an honest balance between reality and whimsy in his work: walls are made of solid materials - no veneers, but around each corner is a finishing touch that you can't help but hear Richardson's chuckle in - like the statue of a frog sitting at the entrance of an upstairs porch.  His architecture is bold and alive; it's solid and comfortable; it's secure and fun.  Who doesn't like a guy who's comfortable enough to laugh at himself?

These were probably the two most personally impressive structures on the trip, but by no means the only ones we toured.  We were immersed in the Newport culture of the Gilded Age in the "summer cottages" along the shore; saw the whaling center of New Bedford, MA, which was where Herman Melville boarded a whaling ship, inspiring the writing of Moby Dick; saw LaFarge and Tiffany windows galore; spent part of a sunny afternoon on the beach across from Edith Wharton and John Russell Pope's houses; ate clams for the first time ever, and at least liked the chowder; saw the biggest collection of specimen trees in North America; and walked in some of Olmstead's meadows.  Every cell in my body ached from walking, learning, and eating, but every experience was worth it.
