South Hills pitcher Kaitlyn Van Helmeryck (9-2) went the distance for the Huskies with four strikeouts. She also scattered seven hits. The Huskies scored the only run in the third inning when Abry Moreno scored on a passed ball. Brittney Amezquita went 2 for 3 to lead the Huskies, who improved to 13-6 and 1-2 in league play. The game got interesting in the bottom half of the seventh with two outs, but a lineout to short with Bulldog runners on second and third ended the game. Morgan Ettinger went the distance for Ayala, allowed two hits and struck out seven. Ayala dropped to 10-8 and 1-2 in league.
In a close nonleague matchup the Huskies came out on top with a stellar pitching performance by both Sarah Macias and freshman Caitlyn Van Helmeryck (3-0) who recored the win. Britney Rodriguez went two for three with a double and Brittney Amezquita chipped in going two for three with one RBI. Cristen Stewart was credited with the game winning RBI in the top of the sixth inning with a double off the fence. With the win, South Hills improved to 7-3.
WEST COVINA - South Hills High School softball coach Scott Fisch said he might have pulled a muscle, one of the risks he takes every time the Huskies win CIF-Southern Section playoff games.
It wasn't just that, the Huskies turned three inning-ending double plays, and Amezquita, just a freshman, collected three hits and scored twice.
"People don't give our infield enough credit," Fisch said. "You hit the ball on the ground and it's usually an out. We might make a mistake, but we rarely make two in a row."
Fisch was especially pleased with Amezquita, who led off the fifth and sixth with base hits to get the Huskies going, scoring each time.
"She's got either ice in her veins or she's not smart enough to understand the situations," Fisch said. "She doesn't always (bat) for us, but she hits faster pitching, that's why she was in there. You can pitch around Britney Rodriguez all you want, but we have others that can burn you, and today she (Amezquita) was as big as anyone for us."
