Lawlessness
This is what I'm meditating on today...
"Third, I caution you to beware of antinomianism, which is the belief that there is no need for laws in the life of the believer. That great truth that "Christ is the end of the law" may betray us into this belief if we do not consider that Christ himself adopted every point of the moral law! Beware of thinking, "Because I have the love of God I do not need holiness," or "Since I pray all the time I have no need for set times of private prayer," or "Because I am spiritual I have no need for self-examination." Instead, let this be our thought: "I prize thy commandments above gold or precious stones. O, what love I have found in your laws! All the day long I will study in it." We must beware of self-indulgence, or of mocking self-denial, fasting, or abstinence. We cannot cry out, "Only believe, believe!" and call others "legalists" who are trying to live as Scripture teaches. We must remember that "by works our faith is made perfect." -John Wesley
Lake Oconee
We got back into the swing today. The swing of things, that is. We had a wonderful and relaxing visit with my family at Lake Oconee this weekend. The weather was perfect. We all enjoyed kayaking, canoeing, and swimming in the lake. The house had a nice big yard to play in and a "swimming pool" (what my girls call a hot tub). Except for a couple of sunburns on the big people and one swimmer's ear, we had a great time!
To Catch a Dragonfly
We went for a nature walk today. The weather was *perfect*. 69 degrees. Light breeze. Bluest skies. White, puffy clouds. It was interesting seeing what treasures the girls picked out to bring home (clover, pine cones and needles still on the branch, black-eyed susans, mimosa "puffs", and Queen Anne's lace). The biggest surprise was when Sylvie decided to catch one of the dragonflies flitting about. And she did! It was a thrill. You never know when one second you'll be walking along, and the next you'll be holding one of God's wonders right in the palm of your hand.
Six Flags
Yesterday we got to go to Homeschool Day at Six Flags Over Georgia. My, did we have fun! Both girls rode the wooden Scream Machine and the Wheelie (which goes upside down). Lily's favorite was the bumper cars and Sylvie's was the Wheelie. We ended the day by getting *soaked* at Thunder River. It had cooled off by this time and the water was freezing! Sylvie asked if we could "never do dat ride a-GIN." I was genuinely amazed at how many homeschoolers were there. I even started trying to pick out who was a fraud, but never saw anyone that I doubted homeschooled. (Don't ask me how I know, but it takes one to know one.) We had a very pleasant time and had an odd sense that we knew people who were complete strangers. We can't wait to go back!
My neck hurts...
Yesterday included a visit to the doctor, a science fair, and a soccer game. This is our typical life. Lily had a "muscle sprain" from an awkward fall on a trampoline on Monday. The pain spread to her chest, so I took her in for a check up. It was merely muscular, so that was a huge relief. Along with the relief came disappointment when she found out she could do no physical activity ("yes, that includes riding your bike"). She went with her dad to the game anyway, so she could cheer on her friends. We also went to check out the homeschool science fair at the McWane center. It was pretty cool to see what homeschoolers can come up with. I was impressed with a weather display by a 3rd grader that included documentation of all types of weather (including tornadoes!) from her home. Maybe Lily will be inspired for next year. By the way, Sylvie went to bed with a sore neck as well last night. Origin unknown.
Countdown to Bday #4
Lily woke up with a fever yesterday, and today it lingers. In the aftermath of Valentine's Day, it makes my heart hurt to see her feeling bad and with no energy. She does perk up with ibuprofen, but I know it's a false recovery. Hopefully she feel better in time for Sylvie's party this weekend.
First Day of February
Lily ran to me this morning, excitedly asking, "Mama, is today the first day of February?" "Yes, dear." "Is Sylvie's birthday going to be this month?" "Yes, dear" "How many days until her birthday?" "About 3 weeks"
Lily faints to the floor, closing her eyes, and throwing her arms askew out to either side.
Pause.
"Did you faint?"
Drama queen sits up. "Three weeks is such a long time!"
Home Alone
Something happened today which almost never happens. I am at home alone. Jeremy took Lily to her science lab and Sylvie went with to play at the McWane center. It's kinda quiet around here, but I don't mind. Keep thinking I hear someone. Time to work on school planning and Sylvie's party.
Fairies and Gnomes
Lily got the part of a fairy for the upcoming Peter Pan ballet! I think she will really enjoy dancing in a pretty, girly costume. She starts rehearsals on Saturday and will rehearse every Saturday for an hour until the performance. As always, I'm really looking forward to watching her perform.
Gun Show
I went to my first ever gun show today. Jeremy was so excited about it. It felt really good to be able to make him so happy. I bundled up the girls and we made it a family event. Thankfully, he didn't feel the need to add to his collection today!
Snow Day
We had a snow day today...minus the snow. We did reading and spelling. Then Jeremy took Lily to Costco to get snow mittens for Sylvie so she would be totally prepared to play in wet, subzero weather. Needless to say, she never even went outside today. The few flakes we've gotten were exciting though, enough to give us hope for the weekend.
Just Like Yul-yee
Sylvie: I gonna be jus yike you Yul-yee!
Lily: You're gonna be a surgeon when you grow up?
Sylvie: I got pannies on my bottom!
You Just Have to Believe!
Sylvie surprised me with this phrase and pulls it out at random times, whenever it suits her. As in: "No, you can't have a piece of chocolate cake until you eat your spaghetti." "But Mommy, you jus ha to buh-YEVE!" or "I can't find your hat, Sylvie" "But you jus ha to buh-YEVE." To have the faith of a child.
The End of Christmas
Today we took our decorations down. It felt good to clean and reorganize. We are looking forward to an exciting year. Sylvie has made the last step out of babyhood and I can't wait to see what changes this year will bring for her. Lily has grown from mother's little helper to mother's BIG helper: able to straighten the whole house, help with laundry, and do a host of tasks she couldn't do just a year ago. 2010: A new adventure awaits!
First Day Out
So Sylvie started potty training on Sunday. Today is her first outing since she began. Daddy is taking her to Wal-Mart. All I can say is, I'm glad it's not me! I'm guessing she'll do fine, but I'm wondering, did he take any extra clothes?
Selfishness and Grace
Does anyone else get frustrated with the little selfishnesses they see within their children? Is is because I am so selfish and know it is wrong? Thank you, Lord, for your grace that washes me clean; without which I couldn't mother, wouldn't know how. Help me extend this same grace to those around me.
A Little Princess
Then he went with Sara into her little sitting room and they bade each other good-bye. Sara sat on his knee and held the lapels of his coat in her small hands and looked long and hard at his face. "Are you learning me by heart, little Sara?" he said, stroking her hair. "No," she answered. "I know you by heart. You are inside my heart." And they put their arms round each other and kissed as if they would never let each other other go.
Dressing Up
How many outfits would I wear each day if that was the only thing I had to think about? Sivie Rose loves dressing up. Her favs are her "bun-rabbit" and her "pincess". How many times, you ask, does she don a new clothing item? Whatever number you guessed, it's higher.
So What?
Today was pretty cool. Literally. The way I handle the cold is to walk very fast thinking hot thoughts, as in "My hands are nice and warm in these gloves within my pockets." or "Good thing I wore my hair down today." or "Migraines warm me up a bit." Really though, if I find that my head is starting to hurt, going outside can shock my veins into rapidly constricting and Sha-zam! headache starts to recede. My blessing of a husband did the following today: did two loads of laundry, put away the dishes, cleaned up after dinner AND put both to bed. This is not to mention the playing and fun we got to have with him. Oh, and Sylvie tee-tee'd in the potty. Afterward she looked at me like "So what?"
Lord's Day
Today I took the most blissful nap...I put Sylvie down and then went down myself. Guess who woke up first? Me...by about ten minutes. I woke up and my body went, "Thanks. I needed that." I think Dewayne's lesson this morning took it out of me. Tonight he spoke about humility, materialism, living to please Him - wow! What a Lord's day this has been. Thinking of it that way, I can't believe I slept through it! Monday, here I come...
What?!
Okay, hopefully I've removed everyone who does not want to be a member. Sorry about that. I think I accidentally added people.
We had a fun morning at the library and the bowling alley this morning. Lily was so excited to have come in 4th place (out of six). Sylvie enjoyed the pizza and cheered for her big sis. Tonight is friend Boo's sleepover birthday party and Lily is counting the minutes.
I have members now? How did that happen?
Many things defy explanation. IMHO, technology is one of these. Is this one of the mysterious reasons my husband and I are a "match"? Wii to me is peculiar. We spent New Years' Eve with our close friends, Michael and Rhonda and their son, Connor. They brought over their system and we had hours of fun playing (and watching). But it still seems odd to play a game of a game. As in most things, it is more fun if you just don't think about it.
Happy New Years!
2009
It's time. 2009 is almost here. What will it bring? He has given us His Son. What would He withhold?
Falling Off the Wagon
Don't hold it against me. I haven't written in awhile. Thankfully so few people are reading this that hardly anyone noticed. What spurred me to blog today was the rain. Well, not so much the rain, but a child's view of it. "The raindrops are having a meeting on my window." (laughing) "Look, they're meeting on Sylvie's window too!" And they were. Also, "Remember when I was little and I had an imaginary friend?" "You still do, honey." "Yes, I've had them many years, I think. Pirate is going with me to McWane."
Stomach Blah
Lily had a little stomach yuck going on yesterday. It continued on into today but she doesn't really know it. That kid gets over illness faster than any kid I know. I really felt bad for her yesterday though. She didn't want to do anything but lie down and drink water. She perked up enough to watch TV a little. I'm trying to will the rest of the family to stay healthy.
Fun Day
We got to eat lunch with Daddy today. We always love doing that. After lunch Mom took us to Whale of Sale and got some clothes for the girls! Then we went to Wald Park where they swung, pretended, balanced, fell, climbed, and slid. Lily went across the monkey bars for the first time. Granna took them for a walk at home and Lily wanted to use the "bunk" stroller but Granna said that she was just going to take the pink one. Tonight is date night and I can't wait!
Today
Just a quick jot on our day. We had a full one. Granna is here and so involved with the workings of our family. Lily had a dentist appt today (no cavities!), a theatre production, and soccer practice. She didn't even have time for learning (sarcastic remark noted)! Sylvie played with her good friend Wyatt - they joined each other in dreamland with a mid-day nap to continue their play. Lily and Sylvie are both getting over ear infections but don't know it and can't fathom why they are still taking medicine. Ignorance is bliss.
Everpresence
I see Him everywhere. In His creation, His gifts, His people. It's unfathomable, really, how He can be all places at once. Even in the silly, inane moments that happen in my life. How He helps me have joy when it makes no sense to have it. Everpresence. For this I give thanks.
Morning
One of my favorite times of day is in the morning. Right after breakfast when I'm cleaning up and the girls are playing with each other in this room or the next. Their laughter and giggly-girl sounds enter this heart and dilate it with warmth. It's a simple joy that propels our day into what it should be: one for His glory.

Patriot Day
This past Sept. 11, I woke up and went about my day. I was preparing for company, so we did our academics in the morning and cooked and cleaned in the afternoon. It didn't hit me until mid-afternoon of the significance of the date. It was the first time that had happened since '01. I forgot. Not for that long, really, but still. It's true. Something horrific happens, and then we move on. Why is it important to remember? To feel those feelings anew? Why should we ever feel sadness, grief, fear? Why not just cover, bury, pretend nonexistence, move on? I think to keep our hearts soft, reachable, to make room for Him, to connect with others. He searches our hearts and knows us. In this way the Spirit helps our weakness.
In weakness,
Anne
First Soccer Game
Today was Lily's first soccer game. And Alabama's blazing sun. She did great. By great, I mean she ran hard, kicked the ball several times, had a good shot at the goal, and primarily had fun. But her "favorite part of the game was when we left." I think she noticed the sun too.
Athletically yours,
Anne
Journaling
Don't quite know how to do a public journal. I feel like I'm talking to myself. I probably am. Well, that's something I've done before, so, should come naturally. Although I can talk to myself in front of my kids, I can only write like this when I'm alone...which happens infrequently...as you can imagine. I was in the bathroom the other day (not *in* the bathroom, just "in" the bathroom), when Lily walked around the corner and said, "Mama, why are you talking when I'm not here to hear you." I had not a clue that I was talking to myself. Journaling is more intentional...more effort. I also don't read a lot of other peoples' blogs, so I don't know how this is "suppose" to go. Don't hold me to anything.
Noncommitally yours,
Anne
