Operation Central
Volunteer Coordinator Margaret Aschenbrenner mans a busy greeting station at SISCA (Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals) in Kettering, Ohio where more than 330 volunteers helped care for over 1500 deserted cats and dogs last year.
Cat's Eye View
Tabby cat Luka is at home peering down from high above the cat room. While Luka enjoys the status of being around the longest, (since 2005), the average shelter stay before adoption is about six months.
Caged
Transitions can be rough when a dog is placed in SICSA where despite the love and attention from volunteers and visitors, pets spend about 22 hours per day in 5’ X 5’ cells.
Loyal Friend
Dayton local Gus Pearson is a “regular” at SICSA where he often spends his Sunday afternoons visiting with his furry friends. Gus states,“I’ve seen more (pets) come in within the past couple months than I have over the past year.”
Not At Home Anymore
Kelly, a Beagle, is one of 37 pets brought into SICSA since January 1 due to a home foreclosure which forced many owners to give up their pet. Kelly is only five days in to what could potentially be a long stay at the shelter.
A New Day, A New Playmate
Resident cat (right) “Miles” gets to know the newbie one-year-old kitten “Trinity” (left) in the cat room at SICSA. In order to match people with appropriate companions to adopt, each new admission at SICSA has a info card attached to their cage for visitors to get to know the name, personality and health status of each potential adoption.

Homeward Bound
The end of visitor’s hours means a happy ending for Andie who is in the process of being adopted by the Mann family. All SICSA adoptees are sent home spayed or neutered, with vaccinations, computer chip identification, and an adopter packet of goodies.
