Arapal Livelihood - Wooden Spoons

Wooden Spoons

Wooden Spoons from Tree Branches....

I have been trying to encourage people around Arapal, Cebu to STOP CUTTING TREES for almost five years now. They chop down what took ten years to grow and turn them to ashes in minutes. Because of goat raising, that has been minimized in Arapal, but in outlying areas where we do not have goats, they are still chopping down hard wood trees like Tugas or Molave (iron wood). That is true pretty much all over the country. http://arapallivelihood.shutterfly.com/woodenspoons

Hunger is the #1 reason why people do that. They do not see the economic or environmental value of letting trees grow to its mature state. They are too hungry to wait or to care. They need food immediately and turning precious wood to charcoal or fire wood is a quick way for them to get food, no matter how meager.

By teaching them trade (not giving aid), they can make more money making wooden spoons out of branches than making charcoals and fire wood out of trunks. It broadens their skils and expands their outlook in life. A lumber is more valuable than firewood, but a furniture is more valuable per cubic feet than a lumber. The most valuable of all is turning wood to crafts and work of art like spoons or carved mugs. Buy our wooden spoons and each spoon will represent preserving a tree or planting  new ones. You can use it as a gift, a conversation piece or a practical tool in your kitchen.

Robbie Simmons

Three years ago, Robbie Simmons was supposed to go to Cebu to teach the locals how to make wooden spoon by hand.  No machines involved. Just a knife and a carving tool. Because of lack of funding, he was only able to send samples of his work with me and in turn, I gave them to the locals. Today the locals are now making hand carved wooden spoons from tree branches. Although Robbie did not get to personally go there, he is as much a part of this program. Without him, wood for food would not have been possible. Thanks Robbie Simmons.

Moichee Lee of Singapore tried her hand in making hand made wooden spoon.

There are many available craftsman in Cebu. They need trade, not aid.

WOODEN SPOONS.

Wooden spoons are commonly available with these varieties:
*Tugas or Molave (iron wood)
*An-An wood
*Mahogany
*Gemelina
These trees are readily available in our area and we can guarantee their sources and protect the trunks from being cut. Some spoon may be from trunks of trees cut due to "thinning system" to allow other trees next to them to grow bigger.

WE NEED PARTNERS

We are looking for volunteer partners to help us develop programs like this. We need technical people, skilled cracftsmen who can help us create new quality products. We also need marketing partners to help us promote them in large and small markets or as a fund raising tool for churches, missionaries, or non-profit organizations.
