Thank you for viewing the last pictures that were taken of my beloved Artster, as well as the album of him at Pinehurst last year where he was 5th of 18 in his first PSG on Friday and came back to win the class (of 15) on Saturday. Artie always had a very clear sense of how beautiful he was and he loved posing for the camera. My friend, Neva Scheve, deserves all of the credit for expertly capturing Artie's essence: his keen intelligence, gentle nature, and wonderful sense of humor. I believe she has also clearly conveyed the very deep bond of affection and trust between us, and for that I am eternally grateful.
He was, without question, my horse of a lifetime.
With Heartfelt gratitude to the many people who helped make this incredibly difficult journey bearable: Dr.Susan Johns of Virginia Equine Imaging for her expert counsel, unflagging support, and deep empathy. And to David and Lauren O'Brien, Mary Rice, Pat Doennig,Wendy and Lee Griffith, Martin Kenny, Bob and Sue Lane, Sandy Stringer, Brad and Diana Wood, and Emily Snapp.....your support has meant the world to me.

I was so proud of Artie at the 2007 Region 03 Championships. He won both the Third and Fourth level Championships in a snaffle, even in spite of being a bit naughty. These wins capped a season where I had asked our trainer, Shawna Harding, to give Artie some much needed show mileage. Boy, did she ever- they were undefeated at Third and Fourth in sixteen classes! Wins included the high score of the show at Fourth Level at the Raleigh CDI and Kentucky Fall MSEDA- both in the mid 70's.

Enjoy!
Artie was euthanized due to the increasingly debilitating effects of an immune system disease known as "degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis" or DSLD. Although the disease typically outwardly manifests itself in the suspensory branches, it has been shown upon necropsy that affected horses harbor the disease throughout their bodies wherever there is connective tissue. Diseased tissue has been found in the nuchal ligament, around the eyes, and surrounding the heart.
It is not clear what causes the disease, but it is known that DSLD horses experience a breakdown in their normal tissue healing process and begin to produce cartilage in connective tissue instead of collagen. This makes the connective tissue hard and brittle when it should be elastic and resilient. Subsequently, theses horses experience a variety of progressive symptoms coupled with very painful and compromised movement.
There is a real need for additional research and more general awareness of DSLD. To learn more please go to http://people.delphiforums.com/RZECH/dsldvet/index.htm
Thank you.
