It is with great regret that I am writing today, August 7, 2010, to inform all that the Artists' Market WILL NOT continue into another season.

It seems that the Zoning Board of the City of Sarasota has found it necessary to now require all outdoor art markets/farmers markets to have a city permit. After attending many zoning board meetings and speaking on behalf of all art markets in Sarasota we are doomed. The permit fee for the first year is $543. At this time there is no additional information as to what the cost will be after the first year. I am not a venue promoter and refuse to charge the vendors a large fee. The normal fee was not more than $30 per Saturday. Many times vendors were allowed to attend with no fee if they were in a personal financial crises of their own. Considering all that has been listed, unless someone out there would like to sponsor us and contribute the fee amount we CANNOT GO ON!

As a resident of Sarasota I am very confused as to why Sarasota would find it necessary not to embrace the talents of their residents and promote more artistic events. Sarasota is known to be a City of Art and Culture yet by imposing this large permit fee they are putting an end to promoting the novice artists. My confusion continues as the Artists' Market always set-up their Saturday event in private parking lots in the Historic Burns Square District of Sarasota. At no time did we have negative feed back from the merchants in Burns Square. Actually, the merchants were delighted to have us there as the Artists' Market attracted customers who also shopped many of the stores in the area. Some of the merchants had suggested we start a petition to present to the Zoning Board and the Mayor, which we did.......but it seemed to do no good. With the economic problems we all face it is sad that the City of Sarasota has lost a venue that not only provided another outlet for artists but now has taken away an additional customer base for Burns Square. The Aritsts' Market, as well as other small venues, are not part of the larger venue circut where promoters charge extremely high fees ranging from $175 and as high as $500 per event.

The Artists' Market's manager is firmly commited in combing local artists and all community groups in order to provide Sarasota residents with the convenience of shopping and finding information. Sorry I've been out of touch. Things are CRAZY. Working in the sub shop and doing the family stuff. Still would love to come and participate - probably after the new year. I'm going to Paris mid-December to work on a convention my sister is running!! Then it's off to Ohio for Xmas. Hope all is well with everybody. Hi to all viewing the Artists' Market....I have decided not to add any pictures from Saturday December 27th......why you ask?

Welcome 2009

As we welcomed a great day as far as weather was concerned, we found that the New Year dipped into our vendor attendance....Some were out of state enjoying family, others had family enjoying Florida weather, a new grandchild was born to another. Unfortunately we had illness and injury among some and a vendor's child in the hospital. If you pray, can you keep little Evan in your thoughts as the doctors are still not sure what is wrong with him.

On the bright side, the New Year brought new vendors to the Artists' Market and this coming week we look forward to a full house of regular and new vendors. The New Year at the Artists' Market promises to be exciting, full of creative passion from the artists and the addition of more unique items to be displayed and sold.

GREAT CUSTOMERS, SUPER WEATHER AND MORE CREATIVE VENDORS

We could not have asked for more.........except perhaps a floor plan! Vendor cars unloading, tents popping up everywhere and tables being set-up. Mother Nature provided a true day in paradise.

The most important objective of the Artists' Market is providing a place for an artist to exhibit what they can create. Be it jewelry, works of art, quilts, music, stained glass, greeting cards, angel gifts, encased butterflies, eco-friendly shopping bags, parrot toys, hand made beads.....each artist has beeen given a gift. When a customer stops by a booth they usually ask "did you really make that"? The customer is in awe at the details and hours of labor that go into a finished item. And when a new vendor makes that "first" sale of the day......or be it their very first sale ever; and a happy customer walks away with a smile, then you know it has been a worthwhile day.

WE ARE EXPANDING

It is official...........WE HAVE EXPANDED..... our additional location will be on the corner of Orange and Laurel Streets. As the manager of the Artists' Market I am more than excited to be able to provide local and surrounding area artists a place where they can gather to display and sell what they create. With this additional location we now can offer more unique gifts and set-ups for community groups. If you live in the area or are just visitng, please be sure to stop by.

On Saturday, January 31st enjoy a family day at Historic Burns Square for the First Annual Burns Square Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Burns Square Merchants' Association. The cook-off takes place in the courtyard of Galileo Ristorante from noon to 3 pm. For more information about the Cook-off visit www.BurnsSquare.com

Then stroll through the Artists' Market where you will find that unique gift. The Artists' Market will also be host to the International Brotherhood of Magicians, Ring 81 who will delight you with magic beyond belief. You will also be able to meet volunteer members of the Racing Dog Rescue (greyhounds) who will provide adoption information.

Florida's Cold Snap Kept Many Away

Some brave artists took to layers of clothing, from thermals to triple layers and set-up today. As the day moved on we saw wonderful customers and sunshine. And yes, even Florida saw the rath of Mother Nature.

With excitement building around the Big Chili Cook-Off on January 31st, we are pleased to announce that the Historic Burns Square Artists' Market will be host to 30 plus vendors. We will be adding more jewelers, photographers, mixed media art work, a portrait artist, ladies emblished fashions and more community groups. We look forward to having you stop by!

We were Blessed today with warmth, sunshine, more new vendors and a continued flow of wonderful customers.

We signed up more first time artists' for the Big Event - Chili Cook-Off on January 31st, which brings our total of confirmed and commited artists to 35. We gave out 18 new applications for potential vendors to join us the rest of our season which ends on May 9th.............this is what I call being BLESSED. The news is getting out there of the friendships that are being formed, the unique items being offered and the rare shopping experience. We even signed up another community service outreach group to join with the artists.

And to top the day off, we had a visitor to the Market, the Pelican Press interviewed us and took photos..............now we wait, with great anticipation, to see ourselves in print this coming week.

For those of you who have been viewing and praying with us, Evan is doing well and his mom, our Angel Artist, is back to rare form with smiles on her face and the paint brush in her hand.

Please give prayers now for Mike, our stained glass vendor who is ill in the hospital and will be having a heart surgery in the immediate future.

Each week keeps getting better.....

Florida decided to grace us with great weather today. Most of the week was what we call cold, but nothing compared to what others have experienced across the Nation. We hope that you have been safe and kept warm.

We have again added new creative talent to the Artists' Market, making new friendships and meeting wonderful customers. As you noticed, many of the vendors were busy creating and gearing up for next Saturday.....Valentine's Day.....! IT'S AMAZING TO SEE HOW WE GROW!

Not just another day at the Artists' Market........but a day of Blessings and amazing growth............

We hosted our two youngest artists who are raising money for food allergy research.....they are part of our committment to include community outreach at NO CHARGE!

We gained more new vendors who now have a place to call home and be able to display and sell what they can create! We also signed up two more new vendors who will become part of our family over the next two weeks.

As manager of the Market I feel it is important to encourage the youth of this generation.............we will be hosting some art students from a local high school, we cannot wait for them to attend!

It was not too long ago, November 1, 2008 that we opened with 15 vendors; today we have 90 plus vendors on our mailing list, many who attend on a rotating basis and others that have expressed an interest. From the baby steps of a new Artists' Market we are standing tall and walking.....wow, can you imagine how fast we will be able to "run" as we continue growing?

To the vendors who were out ill or attending to personal obligations, you were missed, hope to see you next week. An up-date on Mike, his heart surgery went well and he is home back in Sarasota. Unfortunately he will not be able to attend as a vendor the rest of this season.

Due to the increase in traffic that we have been getting while we attempt to close at 4:30 pm, we voted to extend closing until 5:00 pm.

Thank you for being part of our family across the miles....remember when you are in Sarasota to stop by, even if it is to just say "hello"!

Special thanks to Shutterfly for allowing us this opportunity to share with you. Thank you also goes out to the Historic Burns Square Merchants' Association, especially to Dr. Sloan and Dr. Furman who allow us the use of their parking lots each Saturday.

ENJOYING THE MOMENT! Saturday 2/28/2009

As the day winds down, all customers are gone and with only minutes to go before closing for the day..........the artists find time for more smiles, for some fun and games or even time to enjoy the last of the sunny rays. Last week the vendors voted to increase the hours until 5:00 pm; it has been a long day, some vendors arrive a little after 8:00 am.....now they will pack up, head home and unload their cars, spend time with their family and hopefully find time to unwind.

More new artists joined us today. We even had several interested vendors who stopped by for information and applications.

Today take a peek at the vendors hard at work inbetween waiting on customers! Each week I begin the section with the newest memebers to our "Saturday family"......we have added a massage therapist; customers and vendors alike are now finding a few minutes to relax and unwind!

As manager of the Artists' Market I have been Blessed to be the one to encourage novice artists.....to see how they have grown in confidence and creativity.....at times we wonder what our destiny is....but I know that I am following a road that has no end.....to see the Market grow......to be able to be part of it.....this is my destiny. It seems like yesterday, but it has been over 4 months ago, when I received a phone call......."hi, I am a housewife and I make things, my friends tell me they can sell, what can I do".........today that woman is a regular vendor.....she has grown from a small 5' space to a tent that she shares with her hubsand.....he used to sit and just draw until he was encouraged to sell his art work and share his gift with the world to see........this week we honor Ora and Luther.....two talented and giving vendors. Not only are they there to sell, but each week they help other vendors set-up tents, take down tents, pack cars and whatever else is needed. Many of us, myself included, would be lost without their continued help!

MARCH 21, 2009....The End of A Long Day!

As The Day Winds Down The Vendors Take A Few Minutes

To rest, relax and picture themselves home with their families. It was a great day, wonderful weather, delightful customers and just being with each other. Unfortunately we had several vendors home ill and we did miss them.

I am sure that the vendors will have a busy week getting ready for the Merchants' Association Sidewalk Sale on the 28th. We will be hosting music and food in our selling area. There will also be other entertainment, food vendors and a face painter along Pineapple and Orange..........if you are in the area please stop by for a wonderful family day........! MARCH 28th, Mother Nature Strikes!

No pictures this week :( as Mother Nature decided to strike with winds over 40 mph.......tents buckled, art work went flying and it was impossible to continue the day. We all had looked forward to the Sidewalk Sale, the food and the music.........as noon approched 11 vendors were packing up to leave............by 2:00 pm the rest of us began packing. My own tent was weighted down with 80 lbs. of weights which didn't help at all.

Downtown Sarasota had another art venue and we were told by customers that they actually saw tents flying down Main Street and part of a building came tumbling down as well. I am greateful that all the Artists' Market vendors and customers were safe.

The upside of today was that we now host Sarasota HS Art Department's students. It was a pleasure having them and the Director of the Art Department join us. They will back next week so be sure to come back and see the photos of their work.

Do you give much thought to what you see before you, or wonder about what goes into the creations you see? Each and every item displayed at the Artists' Market is handmade/hand crafted. Of course components are purchased but look at the end results. The many hours that each artist puts into a finished piece of work and the love worked into the patterns.....think about it........as today we put Dawn in our ARTIST SPOTLIGHT.........an amazing young woman who should inspire everyone to BE ALL YOU CAN BE AND REACH FOR THE STARS!

Friday May 1st....Decorating the Streets

Much thanks and appreciation to our vendors and their contribution of art to ensure that the street poles along Pineapple Ave. were decordated for the Chalk Festival Event.

It is with a sad note that some of these items were "taken" or to use the word "stolen" off the poles on Sunday May 3rd. When I returned to collect the items it seems that some were missing. If you live or work in the Sarasota area and have any information, please contact me.....these items do belong to the artists who created them.

CHALK FESTIVAL....one of our own...........

Luther.......a self taught artist who never took a class or lesson in his life............was a "first time participant" in the Festival..........his picture leads off with the background sketch of a lovely woman.....as you scroll through the many pictures of the festival you will be able to see Luther's progress in his art work. In life many of us will "dream a dream" but we all have the ability of taking that dream and making it reality..........as manager of the Artists' Market I have been blessed to watch Luther grow and become a part of the "artist community"!

From perfect weather, to face painting, enjoying a young card master magician, wonderful customers and tons of creative vendors the weekend was one to remember. We hope you had the opportunity of personally attending but if not, enjoy the pictures and hopefully we will see you next year.

As The 2009 Season Ends...........

We enjoyed a lazy day in summer............many vendors spent this day with family.....few vendors became camera shy.......we enjoyed the day with customers and with each other.......we shared hugs, good-byes, tears and pizza as we parted until the fall.

Thank you all for sharing with us throughout the season..we wish you all a safe and Blessed summer and look forward to have you visit us again November 2009.

HELP FEED SARASOTA'S HUNGRY

Beginning Saturday, November 7, 2009 the Merchants in Historic Burns Square and the Vendors of the Artists' Market will be supporting SARASOTA'S ALL FAITHS FOOD BANK. Donate a non-perishable food item or a non-perishable pet food item and receive $2.00 off a minimum purchase of $15.00 or more. Many of the participating merchants are also offering additional special discounts for your kind donation. Participating merchants will have a display decal in their window. This program will continue until Saturday, May 8, 2010.

Donations can be dropped off on Saturdays at the Artists' Market on the corner of Pineapple & Laurel Streets. In addition, cash/check donations will also be accepted. Checks are made out to All Faiths Food Bank.
