Obviously I'm waaay behind in updating this site, but I'm working on organizing my pics, so hopefully I will be able to go back and add the ones I've missed soon and start updating her journal again, too. 

Yesterday was a big day for our lil Ashlyn!

First we took her for a walk to the park and decided it was time to give the swings a try.  So Jason and I took turns sitting on a big swing with her in our laps and she seemed to enjoy the swaying back and forth.  Then we put her in the baby swing and gave her a lil push...weeeeeeee!  She was tired while we were there so she didn't have too much of a reaction, but it was fun to see her lookin' around and getting a different angle on her lil world. 

Then we came home and let her try some watermelon in her mesh feeder...she loved it! 

After the sticky mess - I mean FUN - of the watermelon, we decided it was time to try out her baby pool!  She wore one of her many bathing suits and really loved splashing around in the water in her lil pool on the deck while smiling here and there for pictures :)

After all of that, it was a much-deserved nap for the baby girl...what a fun day of new things for her!

The other day Ashlyn was playing with her lil piano sit and stand thingy (she sits at it now, but eventually we can convert it to a stand-up toy) and looked over at us and just started screaming.  Here she had her finger pinched in one of the toys underneath and couldn't get it out.  The tears, oh the tears...so sad when they get hurt playing.  Jason and I realized that this was the first of many events that will hurt us as much if not more than it will hurt Ash :(

Then today, another first took place...
We were at Cici's Pizza and had put Ashlyn in a highchair (first time at a restaurant, instead of just keeping her in the infant seat).  She was playing with a spoon and when she started chewing on it, we realized it probably wasn't the smartest choice of play toys, so I took it away.  Oh the tears...she threw her first fit!  Tears squirted out and she wailed and wailed, staring at the spoon like it was her most favorite and prized possession and we just STOLE it!  I looked at Jason after we calmed her down and said 'oh boy, are we in for it or what?!".  It's as if we were on an 8 month 'buzz' and that fit was the biggest buzz kill ever haha

So things are going to be interesting I think...throwing fits and getting hurt are the not-so-fun parts of parenthood and these firsts mark the start of some fun times, I'm sure ;)

I haven't journal-ed much, but I think that's just because we've been settling in to a routine and getting comfortable with life these days.

Ashlyn has been sleeping pretty well the last few nights (knock on wood), making it possible for mommy and daddy to get better sleep, too, which is awesome!  She did wake up and cry for about 10 minutes last night around 1:30am, but went back to sleep without me having to go into the nursery, so that was a good step, too.

She's been busy trying lots of new foods, still mostly pureed, but she's getting there.  So far she's not a fan of the plain pureed meats (turkey or chicken), but seems to enjoy the meat/veggie combos (apples and chicken, chicken and veggies, turkey and rice, etc).  I baked some sweet potatoes and then pureed them with a little water so she could have homemade sweet potatoes since she seemed to love the jarred kind from the store, but so far she gags every time i try to feed them to her.  At first I thought maybe they weren't as thin as she liked or was used to, but I thinned them with some water and she still insists that each bite be mixed with whatever fruit she's eating with that meal in order to literally choke them down.  The only thing I can think is that baking them intensified their flavor and since children's taste buds are ultra-sensitive, maybe the flavor is just too much for her.  I've tried them and think they are delicious, so I will keep offering them to her as I've been told sometimes it takes up to 18 tries for a baby to develop a taste for something.

Since Ash is getting heavier and heavier to carry in her infant car seat, I figured I better weigh her to make sure she's still under the weigh limit for the seat.  I stepped on the scale twice with her and twice without (for accuracy) and was please to find that she weighed in at 19lbs.  Since the seat is good up to 22 lbs, we're hoping she can stay in it til she turns one so we don't have to buy a convertible seat that can be rear-facing and front-facing, and instead just buy the front-facing one.  I'm guessing that she might not gain more than 3 lbs in the next four months, but we'll see...

Still breastfeeding and it's going well.  I recently started pumping again since she's not waking in the night to nurse, hoping to build up the freezer stash a bit so maybe she can get more bottles closer to the year mark and less boob :)  I'm sad to say that my huge stash I had previously built-up has gone beyond the recommended three month mark in the freezer, so I'm probably going to have to toss it out :(  I just stopped giving her bottles for the most part because it's been so much easier in almost every situation just to nurse her.  I don't know how formula-fed babies' mommies do it w/ all the bottle prep and what-not...seems like so much more work.

Lastly, Ashlyn sits up like a pro now, gets up on her hands and knees and rocks, but doesn't  know how to crawl yet, scootches around on her belly alot and talks up a storm!!  All day long, it's 'dada baba blabla dada rara' haha ;)  She plays more and more independently now, loves when her pugdogs give her kisses and is just a generally happy, yet sassy lil girl :)

Hopefully I will get around to uploading the May pictures very soon!  I wish there was a way to send a reminder out to people when I post a new journal or update pictures, but I don't want to bombard those who aren't interested, ya know?  Oh well - guess you'll just have to check back often and I'll have to stay current knowing that Ashlyn's site has a few fans :)  Please leave comments so I know you are out there looking for more!

Happy Memorial Day - hope everyone's weekend was fantastic!

Our's was full of family, friends and fun!  Unfortunately, it seems at the expense of Ashlyn's routine and our sleep.  It seemed as though things were a little too good to be true and now I'm realizing that if it walks and talks like a duck, it's most-likely a duck...

We spent most of the weekend keeping Ashlyn out much later than usual and letting her normal nap and bedtime routines go on the road with us so we could all enjoy the holiday with our family and friends.  She seemed to be doing GREAT!  We just made sure that if she fell asleep while we were out, that we would feed her when she got home and then she'd go right to sleep.  Things seemed fine until tonight when I realized that this fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants schedule had gotten her used to being nursed just about every four hours again, and now she is expecting it.  Guess it's back to the intense cry-it-out sessions in the middle of the night so she gets used to waiting 8 hrs before eating again in the night.

She had been doing so well with that before, but now she's waking, wanting to eat and crying until she gags in her bed from being so upset.  It's no fun for anyone, especially mommy's nerves and daddy's sleep deprivation before an early morning of work.

In other news, Ashlyn is still trying lots of foods and seems to be loving most of what she tastes.  So far, we've added several items to the menu, including peaches, avocado, mango, pear-pineapple mix (Gerber Stage 2 food) and apple-blueberry mix.  She loves it all but the avocados, which made her gag.  We'll give them a try again sometime next month and see if she gives a different reaction to the taste and texture.

On Saturday we took at walk to the beach down the street from Samantha's house and let Ash feel the sand between her toes for the first time.  She thought it felt pretty neat, until the water rushed up and give her a cooling off...don't think she loved that so much ;)  But the sand was a different story.  Melissa took some cute pictures, so I will have to save and upload them with the other May pics sometime next week.

I can't believe she's already 7 1/2 months old...time is truly flying! 

Ash had her six month well-visit with Dr. Daso on Tuesday.  Jason and I love Dr. Daso because she is always saying 'this is what I did with my kids', ect., plus she's really down to earth and funny, so our personalities click. 

Anyway, she said that Ashlyn is doing great...right on schedule for everything.  She weighed in at 17lb 2oz and is 26 3/8in long, putting her in the 50th percentile for weight & height.  Her head circumference is 17 1/4in, putting her in the 75th percentile for this measurement.

She gave us some tips on the sleeping issues that Ashlyn had been having, so we decided to give them a try.  First of all, when I put her to bed now, she's awake (no longer rocking her to sleep, although I had stopped this months ago).  I turn on her music and give her a paci and her baby doll.  I tell her goodnight and close the door.  If she cries, we let her cry it out, and so far that hasn't taken more than 20 minutes, but some nights doesn't happen at all.  Then when she wakes up at 11pm or midnight, we let her cry again instead of going in to nurse her.  So far she hasn't had to cry very long at this time, either.  The first night she woke at her usual time of 4am, so I nursed her and she went back down for a couple hours.  Last night she cried a little at 3 and 4am, but went right back to sleep and didn't get up to nurse til 5am, then back down to sleep for almost 2 hrs.  This is a huuuuuuuge difference from her nursing every 4 hours or so at night, so I'm a happy momma.

We're also working on getting her to stay up a little later because up until this point, she would get tired and want to go down for the night sometimes as early at 5pm.  We're accomplishing this by getting her to take better naps, in her crib, and allow a long evening nap as well so she isn't wanting to go to bed so early.  The crib naps are going great - cries it out for a bit sometimes, other times just goes right to sleep, as long as she's sleepy when I put her down.

All in all, things are going waaaaaay better in the sleep department, so I'm thrilled that Dr. Daso's advice is working.  I'm sure once I get used to the new routine, Ashlyn will change things up to keep me on my toes, but for now, things are going well. 

She's also right on track with her eating.  Dr. Daso said she should be eating 3 meals a day in addition to nursing by the time she is nine months old, and she's well on her way to that mark.  Right now she wakes and has oatmeal & fruit, then nurses throughout the day, then has rice & veggie at dinnertime.  When we get thru the rest of the fruits to try, she'll have oatmeal and 1/2 jar of fruit for breakfast, then 1/2 fruit and 1/2 veggie for lunch, then rice cereal & 1/2 veggie for dinner.  At the nine month mark, she should start trying some solids, too...graduates puffs, cherrios, fruit, soft cooked carrots, etc...whatever we want to try.  That should be fun :)  Trying to give her lots of sippy cup practice right now, which is also going well.

Ok, I think the last paragraph may have been kind of a repeat to my previous entry, but no time to go back and check, so I apologize in advance if it is.  Gotta go start making some noise so she wakes up from her evening nap because we're going on 2hrs and I think that's long enough!

Happy early mother's day to all of you moms out there - I'm looking so forward to celebrating my first real mother's day!!  We're having brunch at J's sister Becky's house, then dinner at our house with my parents and siblings.  Should be a day filled with good family fun and lots of tasty treats! :)

Ashlyn hit her six month growth spurt three weeks ago and started waking up every night to nurse at around 11pm and 3am, give or take.  I figured she was growing so I nursed her each time and she went right back to sleep.  Well, now I think it has become a habit more than a need for extra calories to grow because her sleeping schedule is completely outta whack.  She wakes at those two times every.single.night. and then starts her day at about 5:45 or so.  Ugh.  She's taking pretty good naps during the day (except today so far...of course), but I can't really take advantage of that time to sleep myself because that's when I shower and get things done.  Aah...the life of a mommy. 

In other news, I have April pictures to post, so hopefully this week I will find time to put them on the site and send out an email to alert the masses.  Definitely got some cute shots that show how much she is growing! 

Speaking of growing...despite the erroneous calendar entry on this site that I'm not sure how to fix, tomorrow is Ashlyn's six month well-visit.  Even though she'll be seven months next week.   Can't wait to hear how much she weighs and beg the pediatrician for some insight on sleeping and solids because boy, do I have a TON of questions!!

For now, I'm nursing Ashlyn when she wakes up, then about 45 mins to an hour later she gets oatmeal and some fruit.  Then she nurses twice during the day.  Dinner time brings rice cereal and a veggie, and then she nurses before bed.  Oh yeah, and then the two nursing session during the night.  At this rate, she's gonna be HUGE ;)

Off to figure out why naptime isn't happening and hopefully getting a quick shower so we can meet Carrie and Cameron (our buddies who go to the zoo all the time with us) at Crocker Park (an outside mall) for some exercise and fresh air (even though we've already walked a mile and a half this morning...mommy is determined to lose weight and get in shape!).

This week Ashlyn is trying out some green beans with her cereal and I'm not so sure she loves them, but she's being a trooper and eating them.  I love green beans and tried some of the baby food ones and I gotta admit...they aren't very tasty.  Once we get thru the jar, we're moving on to try the Stage 1 fruits, and once we get thru those, the real fun begins :)  I think I might try my hand at making some food, but I'll have to do some reading up first, so if anyone has any pointers or tips, I'd love to hear them!

Ashlyn and I met Carrie & Cameron at the Rainforest this morning and then took a stroll around the zoo.  Ashlyn napped in the stroller and then enjoyed looking at the monkeys and all of the pretty flowers and new faces around her.  I think we are going to be spending a TON of time at the zoo this summer...what a great way for Ashlyn to start learning about animals and just to have a change of scenery!

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the website...since April is almost over, I will be uploading new pictures soon...I don't think I've taken nearly as many this month, but I'm sure I still have some cute ones!

What a fun and busy weekend we had...

Friday Ash and I met my friend Carrie and her son Cameron at the zoo for our very first visit there together!  Ash was totally content the entire time to ride around in her stroller and check out all of the animals, people and flowers that caught her eye.  I am so excited to be able to go there all summer long and then some...thanks to Gramma B & Pop-Pop (that's my mom and dad for those who aren't familiar with the nicknames we have given them for Ashlyn) for the zoo membership!!!  It is going to get sooo much use since it only takes about 15 minutes to drive down there and it's a great source of exercise and entertainment! 

Friday was my knit night, so Jason stayed home with Ashlyn.  I worked on a Market Bag to donate to Stacey's Relay For Life and received a finished one from one of the girls with the promise of several more bags on the way.  I will also be knitting some pink fun-fur scarves for another friend's 3-Day Breast Cancer walk soon.  It sure feels great to do charity knitting!  Afterall, that's why I learned to knit in the first place so many years ago...to help a group at work knit blankets for a local children's hospital.

Saturday we all walked to the neighbor's house for her little girl Nora's first birthday party.  She is six months older than Ashlyn and we are determined to make them little B.F.F.'s (best friends forever) since they are the only little girls in a neighborhood full of boys...they need to stick together, afterall :)  It was so cute to see the little girls interacting and sharing Nora's new birthday toys. 

Sunday we met the Haettich's for breakfast at Denny's, then stopped at Papa & Yaya's house (that's Jason's parents, for those who don't recognize the nicknames we're giving them for Ashlyn), then went to JCPenny Portraits to get pictures taken of the BFF girls, then off to the east side to play with pug puppies that are the litter of my friend Jen's pug Mulligan and her dad's pug Maggie.  Ashlyn LOVED watching the puppies play and laughed and laughed at them.  Then we took her to dinner with our friends and finally home to crash after such a busy busy day and weekend.

In other news, I have FINALLY updated this site with pictures of Ashlyn from her birth all the way up to March.  I will upload new pictures at least every month and am finally ready to share this site with family and friends.  Please know that I realize there are a ton of pictures and that many of them were taken with cell phones and may not be the best quality, but this is the place I am choosing to store them (in addition to an external harddrive) so that I can easily order reprints for albums.  Hopefully I will be able to work on putting captions with the pictures eventually, but for now, at least they are all here so everyone can watch her grow and either download the pictures to your own computer to do what you want with or order reprints from the site easily.  I know I have tried a couple other photosharing sites already, but I love this one for the journalling option, as well as the ability for visitors to sign the guestbook and leave comments.  Hopefully everyone will bookmark this page and check back often or register on it to receive updates so you are notified when new journal entries or pictures are added.

I will do my best to keep this journal up to date, mostly for my own reflection, but because I finally feel like I can devote some time to keeping everyone updated on how little Ashlyn is growing.

Ash has now tried sweet potatoes, squash, carrots and now peas!  She loved them all, but I think the jury's still out on the peas...she was quite hesitant to open her mouth for more of those lol  But who can blame her...they smelled yucky, and I love peas.  Oh well - another few days of those and then we're on to green beans. 

In other news, Ashlyn's now rolling from her back to her belly alllll the time when she's in her crib, which is cute, but so annoying because she gets stuck on her belly w/ her legs between the crib rails and then gets mad and wakes me up.  She's also going through that pesky six month growth spurt, so she's nursing a couple times during the night again, so my sleep is pretty broken, but as long as she's a happy growing babe, that's all that matters!  Her six month check-up isn't until May 7th (she'll be almost seven months by then!), and I'm sooo curious how much she will weigh by then since it seems that she is growing like a weed.  Or a flower.  A beautiful flower :)

Tomorrow will be her first trip to the zoo, thanks to Grammy & Pop-Pop Baum for the zoo membership (as an early Mother's Day gift to me)!  The weather is supposed to be great, so we are meeting my friend Carrie & her son Cameron there.  Should be fun!

Saturday is Ashlyn's BFF Nora's first birthday party!  She's our neighbor and we can't wait to help her celebrate!  She's six months older than Ashlyn and we are so excited to watch the little girls grow up together.

Ok, Ash is getting cranky, so it's time to go entertain the babe :)

Ashlyn turned six months old on Monday and time is really flying by!

We spent her half birthday at Gramma B's doing some spring cleaning with Aunties Shops & Twigs aka Melissa and Samantha and Uncle Eddie.  It was an exhausting day, but Ash did great and loved taking her naps on Auntie Twigs all day long. 

We came home after a long day of cleaning and picked Daddy up since his car was broken.  Ash had her cereal and sweet potatoes and went to bed.

She is LOVING her veggies so far...we've moved on from sweet potatoes to squash and so far she seems to love both.

Unfortunately she's given up sleeping through the night for now.  I think she must have hit the 6mo growth spurt so she goes to bed between 5 and 7 (whenever she gets sleepy we put her down) and then wakes around 11ish to nurse and again between 4 and 5 to nurse, but usually goes back to sleep til 7:30 or later. 

Uh oh - 6:13 and she's crying now so I better cut this short.  Til next time...

Ashlyn had a very busy day for her first Easter.  We took her to the Lake Erie Monsters hockey game on Saturday night, which kept her up waaaay past her regular bedtime, so of course that meant she woke up extra early on Sunday, much to mommy's dismay (but that's ok - the smile she gives when I go in to get her makes up for the lack of sleep any day!).  She woke up at 6am, nursed and then played in her Jumperoo, her favorite pasttime these days.  She was jump jump jumping while I sorted through the goodie bags from the hockey game (fan appreciation night provided tee shirts and lots of coupons and freebies).  All of a sudden, things got quiet and I looked over to see Ash sleeping in the Jumperoo for the first time.  After taking a couple pics, I picked her up and she immediately tried to jump jump jump again.  I scooped her up and put her in her crib for a nice nap.  We showered and headed to Huron for our first Easter even...dinner at Gramma & Pop-Pop's with the Campbell Street Baums was delicious and it was so fun to see Ashlyn and her cousin Austin (who is almost 1) in their pretty Easter dresses.  After that, we headed back home to feed and let out the pug dogs, then off to the Haettich's for another fantastic Easter feast!  Even though it was again past Ashlyn's bedtime, she managed a few smiles and laughs for everyone who seemed very happy to see her.  She ended up snoozing on mommy until we headed home for a little Jumperoo action and finally bedtime.  All in all it was a very fun day filled with lots of good food and good times with family.  Ash is so lucky to be surrounded by so many people who love her so much!  What a lucky she is and what lucky parents we are to have such a perfect lil pumpkin!

My neighbor showed me this great site and I thought it would be fun to make a page so we can share pictures of Ashlyn and keep a little journal going about what's new in her lil world!

This week has been kind of rough.  Not only have we stopped using the Swaddle blanket at night, but we're also working on sleep training.  Ashlyn isn't the best sleeper, so we've decided to work on getting her to soothe herself to sleep and back to sleep when she wakes up missing her pacifier.  On top of all of that, she's also cutting her second tooth (!!!), so she's been quite fussy, despite our best attempts to ease her pain.  But other than those fussy teething and nighttime times, Ash remains the cutest lil happy baby ever! :) 

She loves jumping in her jumperoo (borrowed for Zach & Jake Bouy - thanks!!!) and screeching like a pteradactyl, as well as babbling, blowing raspberries and drooling EVERYWHERE!  She's been eating rice cereal and oatmeal for a few weeks now and can't get enough!  Next week (Monday) is her six month birthday and we'll be starting to try out orange veggies, then green veggies, then fruit.  I'm sure she's going to love it because she is a great little eater and is soooo curious whenever we put something into our own mouths.  Also, she's still exclusively breastfed with not a drop of formula yet.  Last night she enjoyed a 'momsicle' made of frozen breastmilk in one of those net thingys with a handle that they can gnaw solid food with.  She LOVED it and I assume the cold felt nice on her poor gums.

That's all that I can think of to tell you right now, but hopefully I'll be good about updating her journal (mostly as a reminder to myself of all the ways she is changing so quickly) and adding pictures each month.  Most of the March pics were taken with my cell phone, so the quality isn't great, but at least you can see all of her silly faces.
