Fresh Veggies Galore for New Horizons
The guests who come to dinner at the New Horizons Soup Kitchen in Manchester are some of the poorest in Manchester, from elders to homeless families with young children. Thanks to a major donation of a greenhouse, and the labors of a devoted volunteer cadre of green-thumbed gardeners, these clients are eating some of the freshest and best quality vegetables in the city. Guests at the ribbon-cutting celebration of the greenhouse at New Horizons, which operates the state’s largest homeless shelter, women’s shelter, soup kitchen and food pantry, were impressed by the abundance of thriving vegetable and herb plants filling the greenhouse, and outdoor raised beds. The greenhouse and beds have transformed a vacant lot next to the shelter and soup kitchen, brightening this careworn part of the city. New Horizons clients can help with the gardening, too.

Local Foods Demand Booming
The Market Basket debacle is contributing to dramatic increases in local farm product sales this summer. The improving economy and continuing growth of appreciation for the quality and authenticity of locally produced foods are also likely factors behind the growth in business reported by many New Hampshire farmers this summer. The mood was ebullient at the Tilton Farmers Market last Friday for the NH Farmers Market Week and Eat Local Month celebration with Governor Hassan. At the Lee Farmers Market last Thursday, Steve Haendler, owner of Mildred’s Drumlin Farm, a small vegetable farm and CSA in Lee, said his farmers market sales have doubled this month.

It is with much sadness that I post to inform all that the Atkinson Summer Farmers Market has decided to close for business on Saturdays at Freshwater Farms. Our gracious hosts, Freshwater Farms, is certainly still very much open for your continued faithful patronage, but the summer market has been forced to retire. Please do continue to follow, attend and support our vendors at our future food and craft fairs. Our vendors can also still be found on this website under the "Vendors" tab. Please do continue to support them.
