Success 2 more pending SCI Sth Pacific Top Ten records

I had a late season Fallow Deer and Goat hunt in Northern NSW with Mark Daddow from Severn Safaris last weekend and rolled a great Fallow Buck with the 50 cal Muzzle Loader. The following day my guide put me onto a nice Billy and down he went. It was a great hunt and adventure with Mark, its becoming an annual pilgrimage to Marks "Fallow Hunt Camp" and I have had the pleasure of harvesting a number of great bucks and enjoyed some great company! Mark only has a couple of spots available for next year so I suggest you jump on line or give him a call to secure a spot for you! Well - I am on track with my Muzzle Loader challenge - 4 top Ten in less than 4 weeks - only 6 more species to go - so until next week happy stalking and hope to see you on the mountain in the great outdoors...Aussie John

Well I promised to complete my world record encounter so here it is...

The alarm rang out 5am on the Gold Coast as the vehicle was packed the night before we headed off to Coolangatta International Airport with my muzzle loader and gear in tow. After 20 minutes with customs checking all my paper work and serial number I was in the lounge kissing the wife and daughter good bye and boarding my flight to Christchurch.
It had been 4-5 years since I had been over to NZ to hunt and was looking forward to meeting up with friend and personal guide Zion from Wilderness Quest Outfitters they are located on the West Coast of the South Island on New Zealand.
I had a 5 full days of hunting free range Red Stag and Arapawa Ram hunt and was really looking forward to sighting in my Thompson 50 cal muzzle loader with some 300 grain power belt projectiles and pyroxene 777 powder on the range. It was a scenic wonder crossing Arther's Pass towards the West Coast and not too long after we were unpacking the vehicle. WOW those cabins just blow you away with all the comforts and even a spa hot tub! Zion and I headed for the range as it was getting dark quick and we didn't have a lot of time left to sight in the new loads. Heading back to the cabin satisfied the muzzle loader was on and very happy to sit back in comfort while Wilderness Quest served up dinner. I was famished and ready for an early night as Zion was setting the alarm for an early am hunt up the river flat.
The alarm rang out way too soon as I was sure my head had only just hit the pillow - oh well here we go!
The pre-dawn air was cool as we quietly headed into the mouth of the valley and toward the fork in the river about 3 miles upstream. We had only gone 100 yds when across the river a stag roared. WOW, that is a wonderful sound - with plenty of fresh sign and in places you could smell the deer had recently been working the wallows I had a good feeling!
We saw a doe's rear end dart into the pines and not long after, a yearling stag about 90 yds away watching our every move. There were a couple of pairs of paradise ducks working the river and what a beautiful ducks they are. In the late afternoon we headed back up the river to hunt a new area but apart from 2 does nothing else.

The next afternoon Zion binos rose up and he had seen a stag with some does about 400 yds across the river feeding on the edge of the thick scrub - as we were unseen, so we had a chance to take some video footage of the stag before backing out of there with out being noticed.

We had about 1 1/2 hours left before sunset and Zion planned our stalk - it involved a big circle to get the wind right and get us into a low stony creek bed which allowed us cover to crawl into a position and hopefully not disturbing the 2 does and the stag.
This would give us our best chance of getting close enough and getting a 300 grain power belt out the end of the barrel.
Once we made it to the creek bed we removed our packs and crawled down stream in and across the mini boulder creek - it was tough on the knees that's for sure but it was worthwhile as he was a shooter!
The last 50 yds was a belly crawl and we had the fast flowing river to cancel out any grinding of the rocks - the wind in out faces as I loaded a primer into the breach and worked on a position to rest the Thompson - by now the does knew something was up as they always do! As the stag jumped up from his bed, I pulled the trigger back and smoke filled the air.  Zion stood up on his knees with his binos and yelled,  "he's hit",  by then the smoke had cleared enough for both of us to see the big rack take a couple of steps and go down.
Wow that was awesome!!! He was mine and the Thompson had taken its first big game trophy.

We only had 20 minutes before dark to cross the fast flowing river and see my Stag, take photos and cape him out as the black flies feasted on both Zion and myself as we got the job done and with head lamps on made our way back across the river in one piece and intact apart from the wet boots. We had some help later that night to recover all the meat from the old bush stag and they put the meat to good use - so it was a great outcome. Later on in the week I rolled a great Arapawa Ram and both animals will make the SCI top 10 South Pacific Muzzle Loader record book from Zions preliminary scoring. It was another great hunt and adventure. The warm log fire and a hot dinner finished the night - thanks Wilderness quest and guide Zion for a wonderful experience. www.wildernessquestnz.com
My quest goes on to harvest 6 top ten in 6 months with my Thompson Muzzle loader and I am on my way... until next week - safe hunting! Aussie John

Red Deer & Ram Record Book Hunt - New Zealand

Well just stepped of the plane on the Gold Coast from New Zealand 30 minutes ago (Sunday) and completed an incredible experience and adventure with my smoke pole (aka Thompson 50 cal Muzzle Loader). I  have taken (pending) 2 SCI South Pacific Muzzle Loader Top 10 record book Red Stag and Ram during this week past with Wilderness Quest Safaris located on the South Island of New Zealand. I will update the short story during the week as I need to unpack and sort my gear, I just wanted to share my good news.....stay tuned Aussie John

Fallow Freaks

Well I didnt bring one home...while hunting last week - but I did get some great photos to show for my efforts and had a great time. Its a bit tricky with the muzzle loader to get within range and take some photo and video at the same time - I hope to get back to stalk some bucks again real soon! I am of to New Zealand this moring to hunt Red Stag and NZ Rams with my muzzle loader and really looking forward to catching up with the guides from Wilderness Quest and hopefully bring home a big one or two! so stay tuned

Easter Week past

Well it was a warm Easter which made it hard to hunt quietly - the bucks were not grunting in my neck of the woods...I did  take out a hog on a dam bank. The family and I enjoyed the quiet and serenity to make up for the lack of hunting opportunities. This weekend I am of the video and hunt Fallow with my muzzle loader -  so lets hope for a drop in the temp to get em grunting.

Easter Hunting Oppertunities

I hope everybody has a wonderful and happy Easter my friends...a number of you are heading off hunting so be safe and bag a big one and I will have some pictures and stories in the next newsletter for you...until happy hunting

Old Memories & New Adventures

Well the New Mexico Elk draw is in the process now - so in the next day or so I will know if I am successful - that's one of my new adventures planned for this year if it comes off!
Old memories is the picture of the Humphrey River shelter that my old hunting mate Peter and I constructed back in the early 1980's and its still standing - that's an achievement all on its own considering the bush fires etc. Who knows hows many hunters and 4wd have used it over all those years and how many sambar deer have been taken near that old hut. Its on the fringe of the Wonnangatta Valley in the middle of some of the best sambar deer hunting in the world. Well I must say that I have had a few problems with my permit to take my muzzle loader to NZ in a few weeks time - apparently there was a form I didn't submit when I brought the Muzzle loader into the country - but its all sorted now - thank god!!! But I must say that weapons lic Qld and Australian Customs have all been extremely helpful in getting my request over the line on time and I thank them all. Well fallow deer rut is on and I am looking forward to getting out in the bush next week and get amongst em - and get some on video. If you go to the Pursuit Channel on the website and sign up for free they have a large number of free hunting movies you can view on your computer at any time - its free and excellent! To all hunters hope you have a great season and great hunting experiences until see ya next week.

The Brisbane 4 WD and Tinnie Expo

Very hard to find a car park before lunch on Saturday was my first impression! A good number of exhibitors had showcased goods in both 4WD and fishing gear. Its a real disappointment that no Motor Car dealerships have displays at the expo - Toyota Nissan and Mitsubishi all should hang there heads for not having displays of the new models! Not much on the hunting news this week from anybody -  I have been busy getting all my paperwork correct for the trip to New Zealand in a few weeks - my mate Zion over there is trying to procure some Hodgdens 777 power/pellets - and primers for me. My friend Mark picked up a new VW dual cab 4WD and all reports have been positive as was the price according to Mark. Good news about the election and Bob Katters party who won a few seats so lets hope he can pressure Govt so we can get thru a few new laws in our favor and remove the many that don-not work. I wish I had more to say but I will update as news comes to hand - to all happy hunting during the rut! Aussie John

In line with Core Value’s #10 and #11 of the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) constitution, the KAP is pleased to make the following firearm-related Policy Announcement:

Core Value #10: Australians must have the freedom to pursue outdoor recreational activities of their choice including hunting, shooting, fishing, boating, camping, 4-wheeldriving, horse riding, rock climbing and bushwalking without unnecessary limitations and restrictions.

Core Value #11: Vacant land such as State Forests and some unallocated lands and seas now designated as “off-limits” are to be owned and accessible by the people. They are not the exclusive domain of the “Crown”.

Last week I went Red Deer hunting with Outfitter Vince Ashe of Queensland Deer Safaris www.queenslanddeersafaris.com and harvested a great 5 x 5 Stag read about highlights in last weeks edition.

This weekend RED DEER in Qld with Vince Ashe "Qld Deer Safaris"

I hunted this weekend with Vince Ashe of Queensland Deer Safaris located in Crows Nest Qld and put my 338 win mag to good use! This was my first hunt with Vince and I was not disappointed. It was a great 3 day adventure seeing large numbers of red hinds and stags. On the last morning we make our way down the side of a valley into a creek bottom when Vince stopped a moment in the thick scrub, something looked different - I see a movement! Vince then whispered don't move a step there's a big stag behind that thick stuff. Eventually I see a ear move and then part of a head and dark antler - I see it...the only shot available was off hand at about 90 yards through the scrub, sure glad I had my old 338 to punch through. The bush echoed with the sound of the shot and down he went where he stood. The 225 gr shattered his spine and he was mine! After photos the work began with caping and carting out the whole beast, it took 3 trips. With high humidity it was a sweaty adventure but rewarding. Vince really knows the property and getting you amongst the stags - I can recommend this hunt and the outfitter. www.queenslanddeersafaris.com Till next week "happy hunting" - Aussie John

SCI Downunder Coffs Harbour Family Adventure

Business & Pleasure was had in Coffs Harbour NSW Australia this weekend gone! My wife MaryAnne and 8 year old daughter Mary and I headed down to Coffs Harbour for the annual SCI Expo and auction dinner at Opal Cove Resort. While a little down on last years number of exhibitors, there were old friends to see and good times to share. Most of the diehard outfitters were doing a good amount of business booking hunts to Africa and Canada. For a quick overview of the Expo go to YouTube and type in SCI Downunder to view  The dinner was excellent and we were provided with great entertainment with Marty Coffey. Marty had us mesmerised with his incredible juggling with chainsaws to hatchets and fire eating... I put my hand up for a number of auction items - didn't end up winning any - but it was fun! We had a full day Saturday at Opal Cove and then on Sunday wife had a dolphin swim surprise in-store for Mary. It was quite an adventure for sure and we  had great family time together doing what we all love - getting out in the Great Outdoors that is!

Back in Australia

Hi every one, its good to be back in Australia! My family and I arrived 6am last Monday morning from Dallas direct on Qantas and we were looked after excellent - we can highly recommend the Qantas Club lounge in Dallas International airport - it was 1st class. Between the jet lag and heat it will take a few days to be come accustomed. The SCI EXpo is on in Coffs Harbour next week end 25th -26th Feb at Opal Cove hope to see you there. The sunset photo on top was taken in New Mexico. The hunting photo was taken in Kansas Pheasant hunting. Looking forward to hunting some Fallow and Red deer soon with my Thompson 50 cal Muzzle Loader - so stay tuned...its gunna be a big year of hunting.

Last week in America - daughter and dad hog hunt!

The taxidermy at the SCI expo was indescribable, the full mount Bison and Indian was fantastic to say the least! It was great to catch up with Ron Benington for a great night or 2 on the Vegas Strip - Ron will never be the same lols! Also seeing Barry, Ed, Mark and a few more! The road trip via Vegas to Albuquerque was filled with sightseeing, Indian outposts and the snow was a pleasant encounter for the family when we woke in Amarillo to around a foot of snow - the road back to the Ranch was nearly a white out at times - then the sun came out and warmed up - as they say if you don't like the weather just wait 10 minutes! My daughter Mary and I headed out for our first hog hunt on Thursday but we didn't see any hogs - we had a couple of shots out of the Sig Sauer 40 cal hand gun - Mary did well and managed to squeeze of a couple of shots - not to bad for her first go! Never to early to learn and learn gun safety as well. Well by the time you all read this edition we will be in the big bird in the sky heading for Australia - to all our friends and people we met during the stay thank you so much for your invites, friendship, letting us sharing your house, bed and food - it was truly a wonderful experience to Visit your exciting - beautiful - country and cannot wait to return soon. Kind regards Aussie John

The 2012 shot Show in Vegas - My next hand gun the S&W500

My good friend Chris from Texas and myself attended the 2012 shot show in Vegas this week and it was excellent! So many new and incredible products to see touch and dream about...full auto machine guns to 50 cal sniper tactical - there was some thing for everyone thats for sure I made some great contacts in the hunting world - the product world - and the TV hunting world.
I did come away from the show with a new Barnett Ghost 350 cross bow and some new miniature camera gear as well as many interesting items. The 2012 Safari Club International show is next starting on the 1st Feb till the 4th that will be some to look forward to thats for sure. I did meet the Drill Sargent TV host at the shot-show he is a real nice guy and we talked for awhile. I did also meet the "Incredible Hulk" as he was walking around. Chris met up with Pig Man and several other hunting celebrities and picked up some great gear - it was a blast!

Dallas Safari Club Expo 2012

The Dallas Safari Club Expo for 2012 was a great show and success - with a variety of Outfitters from all over the world - America and BC. The 3 day event had seminars covering most topics from Africa, Gun rooms, deer hunting. The auctions and dinner were superb. - The company I sat with at dinner were great and swapped many campfire stories from around the world! The after party was excellent with many new friends made - and a few great invites for later this year in different States I haven't been to before... I met up with Mr Whitetail Larry Weishuhn and Jim Shockey as well as some Aussie and Kiwi outfitters I new. I can recommend this show to all. I am on the road tomorrow heading for Vegas to the shot show and a week off ready for the SCI Expo at Mandalay Bay Resort starting the 1st till the 4th Feb. Be sure to check out the SCI Dallas pic below in the new Album. Till next week "make a new friend and give someone a big hug"!- Aussie John

Happy New Year Australia - America - The World

New Years Eve was a blast at Billy Bobs Texas over 6,000 people packed in. Pre New Years Eve was spent at the Glass Cactus Bar at Gaylords Texas Resort.  I spent the weekend at the Fortworth Gun show and it was also packed to the rafters! Just about every sort of handgun rifle and anything else the fires. I got to handle a S&W 500 hand guns and a super improved S&W 500 man what a hand gun! Some nice 50 cal rifles for sale @ 2700.00. It was a super way to bring in the New Year! This year I didn't end up with a buck - and its a long way to come over to hunt in the USA - But its not always about the hunting is it - however I did make some new friends "Randy and his family" - along with "Mark and his family" and met lots of new people along the way. Kansas and Ohio will be on my hit list for next year - lots to do and see up there! Hopefully the Pheasant will repopulate in Dumas and Kansas as the drought had decimated the population - but mother nature is a wonder and lets see what happens huh! Got myself a new toy to play with a Sig Sauer 250 model 40 cal handgun looking forward to hitting some targets with that baby! Stay tuned as the Dallas Safaris Expo in on later this week and it is promised to be unreal and then its on to the shot show and SCI Expo Vegas! Aussie John

New Years Eve fast approaching

Well its almost over for 2011 - the good the bad and the ugly. What did this year mean to you? Did you accomplish all you set out to do or not - well I sure hope you did. As I am away from my family this New Years Eve is will be difficult time for them and myself.....  I have planned a night at Billy Bobs Texas to see in 2012. To all my family, my hunting friends and acquaintances - I wish you all a very happy and safe New Year. Aussie John  Lets hope in 2012 more people speak the truth and don't blow smoke.

The Amish Buck Ohio

Its Christmas - so Merry Christmas to all my wife and daughter to all family friends on Shutterfly and the hunting community around the world. I was privileged to visit the house and owner of the Amish Buck taken in Ohio which scored 295 BC approx, it has 30 points - thank you to The Peters family for hosting me during my stay and showing me around the back roads of the mountains of Ohio and Matt for filming our efforts. I traveled close to 3000 miles on that adventure from Texas through to Kansas and Illinois to Ohio and back through Missouri and Oklahoma to back home on the Ranch. The Pheasants were lean this year - it was tough on just about every animal in America as it was either a drought or a flood which wrecked devastation everywhere - The Dallas Safari Club is next on the road trip travel and its fast approaching - closely followed by the shot show in Vegas and the the Safari Club International Expo in Vegas and then its back home to Australia for me. Everybody be safe during Christmas and New Year cos a man only has so many deer openings and hunting seasons - so why try to shorten them!

Ohio USA

This weekend I spent with the Peters Family in Hillsboro Ohio - Great area for Whitetail and you can buy over the counter tags for non resident and a doe and buck tag for 175.00 which is a bargin - compared to some other States. We did manage to see some deer on this scouting trip and will return next year. Its an Amish community around this location with horse and carriage on the road ways - did get to visit the Appellation Mountains near by - meet some wonderful folks who took me in and presented a excellent venison roast with all the trimmings. Matt showed me around and got some footage out in the field hunting - he is a great guy and I really appreciated his help as its my first visit to this area hunting - what a hoot. well its just about time to head back to Texas...stay tuned for more updates

In Kansas calling coyotes

I am in Kansas this week catching up with Randy - we filmed a little coyote hunt and checked out some big big deer. I will be applying for a tag next year and slam a big one! Snow ice and wind but its enjoyable new and different! Beer all round in the Jetmore bar last night - havnt played darts for years but Randy and me in Team Aussie nailed them.....lol. Friendly warm people - over here its great - hope we can get them over to Australia on day

Pheasent Down In Texas

We got onto some rooster birds in Grover Texas - nice to em too! Then the weather turned nasty and the snow blew in. I had a shot gun hoot shoot and hope there's more to come this week in Kansas and Ohio.

SNOWING IN DUMAS TEXAS USA

We arrived in Dumas Texas last night and woke to snow this morning. The bus was a hoot to ride in - its an old school bus converted into a Pheasant hunters dream travel motor coach, - with a full card table and sound system. Photos to follow soon. We aye calf fries late night for dinner when a limo picked us all (17) up and we were off to bar hop! No one fired a shot at a Pheasant but a coyote that was in the wrong spot at the wrong time received a blast from one of us. A Game warden did an on the spot inspection......I was good and past the test but unfortunately 2 didnt have the correct paper work with them at the time and were fined but should overturn when present the correct paper work. My Burris Eliminator 4 x 12 eliminator scope turned up just as we departed yesterday - its the hot product from Burris and Beretta - cannot wait to fit it up and sight it in asap - stay tuned for my report! Thats about it for the  moment will update as news happens.....or Pheasants drop!

This week in Texas

photo on the right is me back in the early 80's back packing deer trip in to Humphery river in Victoria - This week in Texas I started to see more Bucks and Hogs...got my 270 Thompson Encore dialed in....so its ready for action. Looking forward to visiting friends real soon. A Pheasant hunt in Dumas Texas is scheduled for next week end - then over to Kansas for a few days with Randy hunting and filming which I am looking forward to. Then off to Ohio to stay with friends I met at Camera School and I am looking forward to that reunion - its been awhile, they told me to pack the long johns....and bring a bow I am bring the snow chains just in-case! This weekend in Texas has been blown a gale but its supposed to be dropping down to the low 20-30 this week so come on Big Bucks - come out to play - I did finally see a nice 10 point yesterday. Aussie John

Pheasantville

Last week end was the Pheasant opening in Kansas - we were at the town of Sharon Springs Kansas. The bird numbers were low compared to previous year according to hunters and local but we gave it our best shot - 12 gauge shot that is with around 20 birds down it was a hoot. Walking the corn and milo rows with dogs and a brisk wind in your face was an awesome experience to say the least!
The retriever worked excellent bringing back the downed birds and the roosters looked magnificent in the morning sun with gold and colored feathers filling the sky - we are heading to Dumas Texas 1st week of Dec for another Pheasant shoot and carn't wait for that!
My Burris Eliminator 4x12 Scope should turn up this week so I can get busy sighting it in - Thank you Burris!!! Tonight is bird eating night - Pheasant will be chicken fried and my tongue is hanging out...lol. The hogs are moving around and the rut should start with that cold blast we had last night. Congratulations to on that 10 point Buck of Bray in Nth west Texas around the 160plus score - a great wall hanger!! Looks like a big road trip is coming, Dumas Texas to Kansas to Ohio back to Arkansas and back to Texas in Dec - That's a plan!
My Buffalo hunting Youtube video is almost 30,000 visits it was filmed in NT Australia when I first started filming - come a long way since then...

This weekend I will be away Pheasant Hunting in Kansas

Stay Tuned because I will up date asap on my return

Deer Opening Day

Well I was scopeless on my rifle....so I didn't go out this morning, the Burris Eliminator didn't turn up from the manufacture - Burris as yet? Hopefully it will this week - I cannot wait to try it out and evaluate it. Got some great close up footage of a nice 8 point just 15 yds from my blind - thought he was gunna stick his head in the window he was that close. 4 - 5 does showed up and we had me a deer feast! The doe was hit the neck and exit though the side with a 125 gr muzzy and only went 40-50 yds. Heading to Deer Camp tonight for Fajitas Night - yum. Windy as all hell here all day in Texas. Looking forward to video - hunting trip to Kansas on Deer real soon - we are planning a little video school on cameras and editing then go film some - and I learned today "I am gunna eat some Kansas "Big Big steak"s with Randy. Who knows what this week will bring - hunting I hope! A new Burris Eliminator scope? Sight in the 300win mag? Video some big bucks but in Texas just about any thing can happen - just like the weather - it changes every 2 hours...lols. Second photo is Jeremy in his blind (called the waiting room) in Arkansas waiting for a deer. Will add more news as it happens this week... for now that's all folks Aussie John Hunts Texas.

Videography at Little Rock Arkansas

Late "am" nights and 700 hp fast cars have kept me busy and working that camera or should I say camera's at the Sprint Car Nationals race track at Little Rock Arkansas and filming Uncle Charlie at deer camp... we had squirrel dumplings the first night - I said the only thing I haven't eaten is Coon - they laughing said - well with Uncle Charlie cooking you may well have eat'n coon already.
No luck on the Deer or Bear at this stage... but hopefully that may change or have to re visit Arkansas again - but never say never. I have met some new and wonderful people in the race industry who are so dedicated and passionate with there sport - as it should be! That's the way I feel about hunting and filming I guess. I will add more soon so stay tuned for the next update. Aussie John

Hunting, Video, Frog fry Up - its been a busy week!

This was an aw-sum week in Texas. 3 days spent Videoing USA National sprint Legend Tim Crawley smoke a big whitetail with his crossbow. 445am starts and tree stands put us right amongst the action with bucks jumping into range. Tim simply nailed the buck in made a jump and landed 10 feet away stone dead - a great result! Next week Tim invited me to capture him driving his sprint car in one of the biggest Sprint Car Races in USA in Little Rock Arkansas should be a hoot! Frogs legs - we had a Frog Leg Fry up during the week along with breaded Crappie Fish and steaks - there goes the diet! lols they were great some where between chicken and fish - the frogs legs that is. Next week will great a Bear Hunt, some Bass fishing, Whitetail Muzzle in Arkansas - I cannot wait!
On The Ranch: Hog update - Hunter had his hogs trap working over time this week with a 300lb monster boar trapped - man was he mad! I had the 357 Colt handgun ready in-case he busted loose as he was waist height - Hunter managed to get him in the trailer....video posted soon on YouTube. Must say Hunter is the world champion Whitetail Trapper as he managed to get another Buck in the hog trap - you want to see some action - boy could he jump - we did get him out and free. Hope to get out this afternoon a burn a Doe tag with my bow...will let you know how I get on...for now that's all the action I can stand - whooo weeee   Aussie John.

Texas Yah Baby!

The rain kept on falling this week - and some green crop is slowly making its way through the dirt in the fields. Put in some quiet leg work over the last day or two and no game as yet beside 1 big old 8 pointer on his own....we need that wheat crop to raise its head!
The 357 mag was a hoot to shoot and will get some video footage soon. We had a great feed of Texas Dove this week "Gotta Love that Texas home cook'n" it was great. Seen a awesome local private car collection - from incredible muscle cars to a vintage vehicle that Teddy Roosevelt gifted 2 boys and a story that's near impossible to believe - I will return for some video and capture the story for you to hear for your self in the near future. I decided to stay on a bit and register for my SCI Expo tickets today in Vegas - apart from a great show the entertainment will be spectacular - Frankie Valley live - Matina Mc Bride - "The Deep Voice of Trace Atkins" of dinner - I cannot wait for that. Hope to see a few Aussie's over here....let me know if your heading this way and i will give you my Cell Number so we can meet up. Will add more news as it comes to hand...Sat night I seen 3 does feeding on green pic tonight...Aussie John - oh and my new Production website is www.aussiejohntvmedia.com

Rain rain rain in Nth Texas

Sadly a friend passed way in North East Victoria, Laurie was a true friend and mate to Graham and Lee and will be greatly missed.
Finally it rained over here...and its still raining! They really needed it bad as the State is in a severe drought. I have a new toy to play with - a Colt Trooper 8-inch 357 mag should be fun smoking some hogs with that! No hunting this week as the wind was extremely strong, its was around 75-90 most of the week and dry. I shot some footage at the Sprint car races and it was good solid fast fun. Looking forward this week to seeing some green pic show up in the fields and hopefully some deer and hogs feeding on it....in the mean time I will be putting in some solid practice with the 357.  Sunday...we have a hunting and knife expo in town this weekend so I am going to have a look around. Barry Bicknell shot some great pigs up North along with a nice Water Buffalo...looks like he had a great trip! Tello headed up North as well and had a very successful hunting adventure taking some great hogs. I will update as things progress in Texas...until then happy hunting everyone, Aussie John

In Texas USA

Qantas now flies direct Australia to Dallas USA - wow it made it a great trip! Only 15 hours and no more LA airport drama's! The weather is super hot over here and the drought is in full force - when will it end. I did go out opening morning for archery season on a very quiet stalk - which open yesterday.
I manage to see 10 deer in total is was 56F this time of year it should be around high 30's well lets hope rain comes soon. I heading off to the car races tonight - should be fun. (Sprint car races were so much fun - I had a blast and shot some great footage - should have that posted soon). I looked out the window this morning to see 3 bucks and 6 does feeding about 200 yds away - hows that for a great start to the day? Cat fish for lunch today - lov'n it!
Looking forward to the drive up to Ohio to visit my friend and his family soon - lots see on the 17 hour road trip - gotta love a USA roady huh? Will up date through the week -until then "Aussie John Hunts America"

Only 3 day's to go and the big bird flies me to Texas - America

Fate can be one of life's wonders - good and bad - but there is very little we can do about it. Thankfully its all good at my end which is a real blessing. Texas has been in a huge drought - but they did recieve a 1/2 inch during the week, thank God for that. The Safari Club in having their Expo in Las Vegas in Feb won't that be a hoot - I cannot wait to experience that for the first time. Dallas Safari Club are having their Hunting Expo in early Jan in Dallas Texas - that will be another great event on my calendar.
I did receive an invite via a friend to the USA shot show but not sure if I can get to that one. Really looking forward to getting some great footage in Texas and meeting my friends and there family in Ohio, its my first visit to that State.
Taking all my Video Camera's and all the equipment required to produce DVD takes up a lot of luggage and specially when flying now - as airlines are continuing to reduce the amount of luggage you can take before they slug you heaps. Qantas (domestic flights) recently changed the checked luggage to 1 bag no more that 23kgs - so if your taking your firearm in its locked case and 1 suitcase with your gear etc - you will have to pay for excess luggage. SO MAKE SURE YOU PREPAY and it will be cheaper than paying at the counter.
If you are a Qantas club member your allowance is 32kgs in one case and membership is around $1800.00 for 4 years, but when flying to North America Qantas Club allows 3 cases at 23kilos each and $105 for the 4th case so you take very little and bring back a lot!
I am looking forward to filming some great projects and deer doco's next year and I will post updates from America where I can....so until then Good Hunting! Aussie John - PS - I am hunting Whitetail and Hogs at this stage

I hear America calling!

well its getting to be that time of the year...when I hear America calling. Not much happening on the home front...Time to get your rifle sighted in...just in-case you get an offer to good to refuse and you can just jump in your vehicle and go get em!
Just got some of this years and last years trophies scored...my Fallow Buck went 220 Douglas - very happy about that! My Buffalo went 103 Douglas and my goat went just over the 100
.
Mark from Severn Safaris put one of his clients onto a Huge Buffalo in the NT scoring around 115 - now that's a great effort Mark... www.severnsafaris.com . Does anyone have any hunting news?

Matthew GrossAnother good one is to use the wife's little jewellery bag that is porus and put some capfire ash in it. This forms a nice dust cloud to watch too :-)

Interesting Facts USA

Out of America: This is eye-opening! In WWII, Japan 's highest ranking naval officer was Isoruku Yamamoto. Although he was Japanese, and his loyalties were unquestionably with The Empire, he studied for many years in America, graduating from Harvard University.  There is an oft-repeated (and sometimes disputed) quote attributed to him regarding the possibility of any nation taking a war to American soil: "You cannot invade the mainland United States . There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass." Here is why he was correct:-------------------------------------------------------  America's Hunters. The World's Largest Army.

The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great, considering there were over 600,000 hunters that got permits this year. Allow me to restate that number. Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran ; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to keep the deer population under control. But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week.  Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned home.  Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia , and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.  And that is just FOUR states. The total population of registered hunters in America today ranges from 23 million to 43.7 million individuals. (Based on annual data provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
As long as the American Hunter retains his right to Bear Arms, America will forever be safe from foreign invasion of troops.

Hunting - it's not just a way to fill the freezer.  It's a matter of national security.

2011 Colorado Big Game Lic Applications Are Out Now

Anybody wanting to apply for a 2011 Colorado Big Game Lic, its now time to apply, you have a deadline of april 5th 2011. You can apply online.

Muzzle Loader & SCI Expo Updates....a few tips and tricks as well

Main photo above: Lloyd Brown from Colorado USA and myself with an Oklahoma Buck 2009.

QLD Weapons Lic department advised me that my Muzzler Permit paperwork was close and should arrive in the mail in the next 14 days...or so.

The SCI (Safaris Club Expo) is next week end in Coffs Harbour....will you be there? Its open to the public, you dont have to be a member...come for a day trip or stay the weekend at Opal Cove Resort!

We will be there...representing outfitter New Zealand Quest...so if you want a great Red Stag and an ADVENTURE of a lifetime...then visit our booth for a great deal and hunt.

Tips and tricks...how are you at taking photos of your hunt? Many memories can be enjoyed after the hunt is over by taking a quality photos. Having the right camera and tripod...carrying some wet-ones to wipe any blood or grass from your games mouth...remember to place the tongue back in the animals mouth or better still remove it with a sharp knive and it wont spoil your pic. Make sure all the grass or vegetation is removed in front of the animal and does not spoil the camera focus and shot...get up close...real close...take many shots at different angles...lay down on the ground and take pic looking up at the game...treat the animal in the shot with respect...dont sit on it for example...One very important tip...is write a script of how you would like to take the photo of your harvest...write down all the tips and tricks and keep this list with your wet-ones in your camera bag so you have it with you and you dont forget the steps to taking a great shot in the excitment of the moment! There are more examples on my website www.biggamehunteraustralia.com

Make Sure You Can Get Away Hunting?

Is it time to do all those jobs around the house? Get them out off the way now before the season starts...and score a few hubby points!

Rut Season Fast Approaching

Fallow Bucks will soon be searching for the hot doe, so its time!! For what you may ask?

TIP 1: Time to get your hunting cloths out of storage and wash them in (Hunting Scent Killer Cloths Washing from your hunting shop) I use scent free shampoo and soap to mask human odors because we dont want scented hair and body soap floating around do we?...we want scent free body, hair, clothing and gear. I store all my gear in plastic see through travel space saver bags to keep them scent free! (Big W or K mart havem).

TIP 2: Once you place your scent free gear inside them add a (Natural or Pine scent waffer available from your hunting shop) and compress the bag and seal.

I then place the sealed bag of gear in a sealed storage box away from heat and sunlight with lid and clearly labeled.

TIP 3: Get a face mask and thin hand gloves to mask your white skin that shines/glow like a mirror to the deer...and go 1 more step camo your face around the gaps of the face mask...Make sure your rifle or bow is shooting straight...spend some time at the range to get back in form!

More Muzzle Loader Hicups!!

Now I have to wait for this outcome.... Queensland Firearms Lic is so back logged with applications because of a failure of its new computer system.... The Qld industry is up in arms over the delays. It has cost the retail sector big dollars and forced layoff of staff because owners cannot pick up there firearms and complete the transaction... In these hard times thats the last thing we want. Gotta ask your self did they test the system before they installed it? Or is it just like the nurses payroll system... a complete stuff up... lets hope they get it going soon.

Australian Customs Update

Australian Customs approved my Thompson 50 cal Bone Collector Muzzle Loader Yee Haa!!!

Australian Customs and Importation.

This week I have been working with Australian Customs to have my Thompson Bone Collector 50 cal Muzzle Loader returned to me after safety testing. Dont forget that the SCI hunting Expo is on at Coffs Harbour 25-26 Fe. Come and visit me and the wife at our booth and get a get deal on a Trophy Red Stag in New Zealand

Nth Queensland

I was in far North Queensland this week visiting my son who is very unwell.... every prayer would help! On my way back south and trying to beat the cyclone I had a chance to see my old hunting buddy Jason James... we relived a few of out great adventures togeather hunting Chital...  (pictures above of Jason Stag and mine) I also had a chance to meet with Pat from Bowhunters Lodge in Nth Qld... a real nice guy and long time bowhunter with a real passion... Pat has some GREAT BOWHUNTING ADVENTURES available for bowhunters chasing a Chital Buck of a lifetime! You can contact Pat at www.bowhunterslodge.com

TIP TIME Its time to check your gear and get ready for the coming 2011 Rut in Australia... get the rifle out and fire a few shots at the range if you havnt used it for a while... check the zero and shapen that favorite knife... as its proberly 12 months since you last did. Make sure all your firearms permits are valid and in order...Bow Hunters get out to the 3d range and fire off some arrows... make sure your sting is in good condition dont leave anything till the last moment and EVERYONE remember with all the rain and heat around MOULD is everyones worst nightmare so check all your gear regulary so keep mould out. Lets work on getting fit...maybe its time to do some power walking to get in shape before the season starts! Rusty finished my Boar Tusks I shot in Texas USA and they were a solid silver medal Boone & Crockett...thanks Rusty (picture above)

Till next week good hunting and I hope all are safe from the cyclone in QLD

Time To Go Home.... Back to The Land DownUnder

Well all good things come to an end sooner or later. I have experienced so much fellowship and new friendships of Texas, Colorado and Alabama. From hunting or eating with the families and there friends, the food the culture and all that the USA has to offer are the good people and mother nature. I have been blessed to experience it all on my Aussie John Adventures. The tips for hunting big Whitetail from Tad (big Red) Riley's frendship and his great family of hunters and Clay who helped me fight my fear of climbing big tall trees in Tennessee add to my bank of knowledge on hunting in America and back in the land Downunder. To all who took the time to get to know me and show me.... God Bless until next time.... Aussie John

Happy New Year Eve-Day-weekend

I wish everybody a safe and happy New Year... may your dream hunt come true!

Last week of deer hunting in Texas

Went hog hunting this afternoon with 2 friends in Texas. We only seen 1 big old boar. Lets hope Tad and Mike tag out this weekend!

Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year to all my friends and newsletter mates!

scouted a few times this week for hogs... still chas'n that monster blackwith white spots but no luck as yet. Some bucks are still chas'n does... so time to edit some video and sort out some gear for the trip back downunder!

Some Of My Best Work?

Today... I snapped some great photos of Whitetail Bucks chasing the only girl doe in sight... they ran her for over an hour... it was a great sight to see and record it. The rest of this week was spent filming a bow hunt on a doe and cleaning and packing gear ready for my wife's trip back to Australia. MaryAnne shot some nice film harvesting a doe with my bow. It was her first attempt on the big camera and she did a excellent job... I must say there are so many great deals in Texas USA on equipment, hunting gear... film gear... computers and lets not forget the wife's shopping at the Malls. My friend Tad is hunting this weekend on the lease...we wish him well!

My Most Favorite Place

We arrived back in Texas at my most favorite place in the WORLD. Met lots of nice hunters from Dallas and from way down South... lots of great fellowship and camp fire food and stories well into the night. A great Buck was taken today... hanging in camp... what will tomorrow bring?

Mitch drops a nice 8 point

Texas: Mitch harvested a nice 8 point buck last weekend...and top photo is Aug class of 2010 Campbell Cameras Outdoor Video school

We tried so hard in Tennesee

Well... we gave it our best shot at a Whitetail with a bow in Tennessee but those Whitetail had other ideas.

It seemed like if we went left they went right and vise-versa. But I had a great time here with Clay and his lease partners and I learned a lot. I had to very quickly over come my fear of heights.... that was not so easy... as they first day we were up a long ways in that tree on a seat... but I managed to get up and set up and importantly down in one piece. (lols to watch I am sure). Hunting out of a tall tree stand is different from any other hunt I have done before. Clay seen a nice 9 pointer in the 150 class but couldnt get a shot on him with the bow.... and a couple of does were arrowed.

What will tomorrow bring?...

Added a short video clip of my doe bow harvest in Texas

Look below in Video Clips....

Picked up my processed buck and heading to Tennesee to Hunt.

Got some meat back today from the processor, summer sausage, mince, chicken fry steaks....mmmm lovn it... living it! Leaving to hunt in Tennesee towmorrow.... really looking foward to hunting with my bow. I picked up my 7 day deer tag/lic in Memphis.

Moved the pop up to a better location at lunch time.... got into the pop up around 4pm.... 30 minutes later a buck and doe turn up nervous cos the pop ups new.... I had brushed it in well and they hung around.

I had the Sony AX2000 set up in the pop up to film the main event. Miss November presented a shot broadside at 30-35 yds.... Man now thats what I am talking about. Thwack.... The reezen sure is fast.... she jumped the fence ran 30-35 yds and down she went.... double lung baby 125 muzzy thwacker wacker!

Friday evening bliss!

Got some great 11 point Buck pictures this afternoon....and HD video from less than 30 feet, then he winded me in the blind. The big fella jumped the fence and I caught him in action.....check out the pictures above......

Thursday Night.

Seen a really nice 11 pointer last night... I seen him for about 3 seconds three weeks ago from a tree stand but didnt get agood look, last night I did and he's 160 class buck.

A few days off

Nice weather in Nth Texas today... time to regroup and write some more hunting stories

We search for Tads Buck again!

Pick up my Buck from the processor this morning

Saturday in Texas and I pick up my Whitetail Bucks head and rack....I have to finish caping the big boy out today and get it off to Rustry's Taxidermy!

Todays News

Its Friday here and a cold front blew in to this part of Texas this morning bringing rain.....rain makes corn.....corn makes wiskey....wiskey makes my girlfriend kinda frisky!...lols...well not quiet. All the deer seemed to be beded down, when right on dark a big 8 pointer jumped the fence and proceeded to chase the girly deer around the wheat field. I rattled him in behind my blind....yeeha! He come a running, I did manage to get it on film but it was late and it was kinda dark by then. Tomorrow looks promising as the night sky looked like it was clearing for a fine but cool day........So maybe Tad will see his monster Buck and complete his dream tomorrow?

Yesterdays Buck

What a day! It started with an early morning hunt....but spoilt when the ranch next doors helicopter buzzed the field I was hunting in 3 or 4 times some 50 feet from the ground. Then after lunch I got to go in a helicopter myself and film the ranch from the air (was a helicopter hoedown of a day) lols.

We were searching for a mates Huge Whitetail...which he may or may not have hit the monster trophy buck. We had no luck searching but did get some great video. (to view soon).

So it was late afternoon I said....was it to late to hunt or not....Mike said Aussie John getout there mate! I snuck into my spot as the sun was setting...bucks and does were on the field already. Bucks were chasing does as the rut is on. 30 minutes later a huge buck presented a shot around 125 -150 yards, he had mass, a sticker and fork antlers...way way to good to pass up.

So I drilled him with my 270 Thompson Encore with 130 gr pills. As I headed back to get my Jeep with a huge grin on my face, I seen a huge hog walking down the track so I nailed him to. My buck is a 12 pointer and maybe 1 more scorable point could make him 13!  Whata day Whata Buck Whata Year

Nothing this morning except a beautiful sunrise

The ruts in full swing in Nth Texas

I was sooo lucky today saw 3 Whitetail Bucks breed 3 does. The Bucks were chasen does, heads down and calling and grunting....

2 Bonus Hogs on the way back to the ranch tonight

Love the Thompson ProHunter......

Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine USA

Happy to say that Texas Trophy Hunters Magazine USA published my first Texas Whitetail story from 2009....November 2010 edition. Check it out now at all good American Book and Hunting Outlets......

Opening Rifle weekend in Texas.

On the hunting lease Kent shot a real nice non typical 13 pointer...pictures below.

Tad had some real bad luck, on his dreamtime buck. Tad has put in 3-4 years of hard effort on this buck...cos he's Bucknunbelievable non typical...lets hope and pray he turns up again...real soon!

Giant Hog

I was hunt'n in a tree stand tonight when a nice 9 pointer came close...then he spooked...because the big hog appeared behind him. He looked to be 5 to 6 foot long and on close up was encrusted with mud. wish he came to bow range. The whitetail cam within 20 yards quartering away buts hes not the one I want. seen 20-30 does tonight all with 7 to 40 yards from my position, then 3 bucks came back in with 15 yards and fed...what a day! Maybe tomorrow my buck will come visit me!

Hunt'n From My Tripod Stand

Last night I got into my stand around 4.00pm it wasnt long before the deer appeared like ghosts from the thick scrub. 200yards away 30-40 deer feeding mostly does except for my big dreamtime buck and his extra large brother. A doe who I feel like I know personally came by again 5th day in a row...with her 3 yearlings in toes.....what a big family! Coyotes yiped and howled as the orange sun went down in the west...mmmm well maybe tomorrow? More on Coyotes:

No Bucks...in came the hogs...

But I did hear hogs in the dark while in my blind this morning....so turned my bow sight light on....turned on my streamlite 180 lum and stuck a hog. One shot kill with 125 grain Muzzy pass through...exit left hand high shoulder...my first Texas hog with a bow.

Passed up a ten point buck today!

What was I thinking? He was at 25 yards broadside!

Woopa Buck

Aussie John in Texas, sitting in a tree stand tonight with 30 or so does in the field, then just on dark a great buck came in but not quiet close enought fore an arrow...going back out tomorrow and the next and next for however long it takes....

7 or 8 on 1 side and at least 5 or 6 on the other...could be my buck of a life time...stay tuned!

The first deer picture was taken this morning A Mule Deer Doe laying by a barb wire fence in the Eastern Plains of Colorado by me with a 75 to 300 telophoto lens from my new a33 HD Sony Camera/Video (my distance was 40 feet from Doe).

That beautiful World Class Mule Deer above on right was taken this week by Kiowa Creek Outfitters trail camera. I got to see my first Mountian Lion tracks they were only about 1 hour old we guess he was round 100 to 130 lb.

I have been here for a week in the Eastern Plains of Colorado with Kiowa Creek Outfitters....they have some of the best Mule deer I have ever seen running around here....if you truly want a trophy of a life time this is the Outfitter and place to book your next hunt, give Dan a call or check them out on there new website at www.kiowacreekoutfitters.com .

Hard hunt....where was the rut??

The Elk hunt came to an end yesterday....the rut did not happen! Thats not the news...all the archery season Elk hunters needed. Just too hot, no frost, no buggling

We got with in 50 yds of 2 younger 5x5's yesterday morning but they spotted us before I could turn to shoot.. just when you think they are coming out of the thicket one way they come another...oh well its a learning exercise all the time. Time off of a while....those early starts and late evening hunts have nocked me around a little.

day 6 Elk hunt

What a morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last 4 mornings have had me out of bed at 3am with a 30 mile to the Elk location. This moring was action packed. A 5x5 Elk bull was highlighted against to pre dawn light and answered our cow call....he came running from 500yds....smashing through trees...man it was close up and personal he stop infront of me at only 15 yds....the Bull seen me and jumped as I fired 125 muzzy...his jumped outmatched my muzzy broadhead....as the bull turned the broad did not hit the intended zone, we followed the bull and had a second oppertunity at 5 yds has came back towards us...but he smelt me right at the last moment and took a quick diversion again the fence and not giving me a shot...

We will be up at 3.00am for round two......and yes the adrenial glands were flowing around my body after that encounter

Summit Tree Stands - Ahead Off The Rest

The Summit Tree Stand factory in Decator Alabama was a great experience to be shown through the complete assembly and production. Its one of the few factories that keep most of its work within America...they have a much greater control of quality...and Summit is Top quality when it comes to your life hanging on a tree waiting for Mr Big to come along...I plan to head back around Dec to hunt Deer with Summit and hopefully get some much needed duck hunting in as well.

Next stop Texas then on to Colorado...

Great Buff & Great Memories

What a great experience! I had such a excellent time at Buff Camp with Mark and Severn River Safaris. My flights into camp were scenic looking down over the salt flat and tidal rivers and creek systems that seemed to go on forever and ever. Lots of video footage enroute.

Mark put me on 2 huge trophy bulls. I choose the one that I liked as he had carried great mass, good length, I could not be happier.

The 375 H&H Winchester Supreme Safari 300 grain Nosler Partition turned the Big Buff over on its back in a matter of seconds. It was a double lung shot. We recovered the projectile under the hide on the opposite side from entry. A perfect mushroom. My 375 H&H Sauer preformed beyond my expectations.

My Swarovski Z6 2.5x15x56 was set on 2.5 done the job! Around 2 hours we had the Buff capped-out and back to camp to complete the turning out of the ears and boil out the skull. Marks trohpy preperation was excellent....so many Outfitters make you pay extra the this service, but with Severn River Safaris its all included.

From the minute I arrived into camp my adventure began from the mud crab for lunch to the Barra I caught during the safari. Searching for MR BIG we seen hundreds of Buffalo on the flood plains. Towards the conclusion I shot a real nice BIG NT hog.

Marks Buffalo 7 Day Safari Package includes 5 Full Days of Hunting. Talk about cast and blast package!

A comfortable bed-room, a warn shower, good food and a big buff. More info and how to contact Mark is at www.biggamehunteraustralia.com menu bar under Game Species, NT Buffalo,

At the conclusion of the hunt I had 1 night in Darwin. The night markets were such a mouthwatering treat. Sea food, Asian and just about every other counties food was on offer. I recommend that you spend at least 1 night in Darwin after the hunt, if you go Buff hunting with Mark and the Team at Severn River Safaris. The Best Western Hotel/Motel near the airport offers new comfortable accommodation and its right beside the pub for a cold one or two......

For now - thanks for allowing me to share my adventures and stories with you, happy hunting Aussie John

Buffalo Express!

Sunday morning NT July 2010. After a great breakfast we headed out to the flood plains in search of Big Buffalo. Around noon we spotted 2 great bulls. We must have seen 200 Buff and 20 or so pigs today, 5 or so dingos yesterday. Caught my first 2010 Barra and some Mud Crabs....no need to guess whats for dinner to night.

Tomorrow is gunna be the day to break in the 375H&H. Stay tuned for more updates as they happen live from the NT of Australia on Aussie Johns Buff Hunt

The weather is great not to warm. Green feed around the swamp edges. Make sure if your thinking about Buff Hunt give Mark a call from Severn Rivers Safaris an email or call he will look after you! Iam having a blast! check out www.biggamehunteraustralia.com under Outfitters for Marks details

We have finally had a few cold nights in Sth East Qld, its about time! I am heading down South of the Border on Wednesday to do a little Sambar Hunting and catch up with a few old mates.

Speaking of old mates I recently caught up with Neil Hinds, back in 1988 I completed the Wynn's Safari race between Sydney and Darwin with mate Neil Hinds in his MWB Turbo Dist Land cruiser finishing 4 th in class, it was a HOOT!

Back in those days I owned and Operated Albury Four Wheel Drive and Camping Gear and prepared the MWB Land cruiser and race Ultimate Suspension for the Wynn's Safari. I really enjoy looking back over the picture album of the many memories of that race and Aussie Adventure.

At the Game Hunters Club night member Larry had given a little talk about his April hunting trip out West and managed 27 pigs, and a few woppers in the bunch. What a great effort Larry and he had some great pictures including evidence of the 2010 flood with dead sheep wedged in tree's 10-12 feet above the ground some 700 yards from the river!

My mate Matt has been out at Bellmont Range tuning in his 338 and shot a 5 shot group all touching! Talk about a happy hunter....look about game Matt's shooting straight.

Aussie John & Aussie Mary take on the Boars of sth East Queensland

This long weekend in South East Queensland saw Mary and myself head off chasing Fallow Deer. A spot and stalk resulted in a great hog. Little six year old Aussie Mary gave a helping hand to dad by taking some great pictures and helped dad cape of the trophy boar for a wall mount.

We seen around 40 to 50 deer, and 4 stags. I had one in the cross hairs but decided to pass on this one, he was around 22-24 inches but decided to let grow a little bigger.

Still way to warm.

Tad ..quail man from Texas

My friend from Tad from Texas was out hunting quail over the past 2 weeks and nailed a few.......sounds like fun to me!

The Picture at top of page shows a Sambar Deer and me in the Red Vest, shot back in the 1990's

The story behind the stags demise.........
I cast my mind back to late 1990's one afternoon. I was driving my Troopcarrier along the Great Dividing Range in Nth East Victoria with a good friend Peter Jhonston.
I was telling Peter about a Sambar that was on the 4 WD track about 1.00am as the 4W/D club I was leading were heading to a late rendezvous. This Stag was around 24 inches and stood defiantly in the middle of the road, why I had to nudge him with Bull-Bar of my Nissan Patrol SWB to get him to move. He didn't want to move. Peter said wow that must have been great to see, and so close.
So as Pete and myself came to the location where I seen the stag.... I said Pete.... is was just around the very next corner...that's where I seen that 24 incher
Blow me down
as we straighten up round the corner some 9 years later there was a stag, not that 24 inch stag but another Spiky Sambar.
I grabbed my 444 Marlin fed 5 rounds and action-ed the chamber took aim of the rump fleeing and fired. i hit the spiky 4 times solid it then the deer turned and run straight back at us.
Now this is where it gets hilarious
Peter was in the passenger side of my Toyota Troopcarrier, as the deer ran past  Pete's side, without thinking Peter leaps out the door and onto the stags back with a knife and brought the stag crashing to the ground some 10 steps behind the Toyota. Given the fact the Pete was an X Jockey and stands around 4foot 10, it was the funniest experience I had witnessed!  As it turned out the stag was running on adrenaline all 4 shots were good, the stag was turbo charged and just didn't know he was dead.
