Teagan is doing pretty well. We continue to face challenges with her orthopedic device, but her walking is directionally improving. We continue to struggle with bowel and bladder, but honestly, it's not that big of deal. It's kind of our routine at this point to cath her, not much different than giving a child his asthma medicine, which we are PROS at. She has grown like a weed. She is so tall and she is talking up a storm. She is such an easy little girl to manage. She loves her brothers to pieces, but Aidan and she seem to have a super special friendship. He protects her fiercely. She adores them all. She and Declan seem to be a little more competitive. Teagan, Declan and Kellen are all in Chinese school, and are doing well. We are getting a new member of the family...not a pet or another child, but an au pair!!! We will continue to have Floribeth, but we will also have some additional help straight from China....scheduled to start in late China!!
8/1/2010
OK - We changed direction for Teagan. It became increasingly complicated to get her the proper amount of care for her specific need by going to various doctors in New Jersey. We made the decision to make a bi-annual trek to Philadelphia to the wonderful CHOP, where Teagan had her neuro surgery. They have a Spina Bifida "clinic" where she has a coordinator, kind of like a project manager, that arranges all of the specialist visits on one day, and there is a cohesive approach with a high degree of continuity that we were not able to manage on our own by visiting all of the various specialists throughout NJ. It worked out great, but we did learn, not to our surprise, that Teagan has suffered some more serious complication in her bladder. Effective immediately, Teagan has gone on a catheterization program. This involves a 3 x per day insertion of a small tube into her urethra to fully void her bladder. Unfortunately her bladder is slightly less than triple the size it should be for her age...due to not being able to completely void. We were not surprised by the diagnosis as it's very common for SB kids and her urine was, well, murky and not so pleasant to smell!! I know it sounds really bizarre, but after doing it for 5 days, we are already pro's. It takes about 5 minutes, so we are doing shifts. Mike has morning shift, Flori has mid-day shift and I have evening. Weekends I will probably do it primarily. By the time these little ones go to kindergarten, it's a simple discussion with the nurse and the little girls are totally ok doing on their own. Thank goodness for online support groups!! Outside of that, Teagan's left leg and foot are smaller than her right, so we are "on watch." As for her leg braces, well, we are hoping that the CHOP recommendation is the best. We are taking her off her other SMO's and moving to AFO's...these are more obvious and profound, but will hopefully help her walk better. Her left foot turns in, which can "trip" her up. So...while I know reading this sounds pretty major, if you were to see her and hang out with her, you wouldn't probably notice any difference between her and other 2 year olds her age. She is a bit speech delayed due to her hearing loss and presumably from learning Mandarin up to 16 months and switching to English. She seems smart as a whip to us and eager to learn. Her brothers continue to love her so much, and we feel so blessed to have her in our family!!
5/31/10 Well, Teagan has been doing very well. The ear thing has gotten a big complicated. One of her eardrums has not healed, so she will most likely have to have surgery in a year or so to rebuild a synthetic drum. Until then, she will suffer from fairly reduced hearing capability in that ear. In the meantime, her speech is coming along, and the hearing loss in her one ear seems to be fine given she is hearing well with her other ear. Walking: Yes, she is walking! Yeath. She gets PT 2 times per week, and she is really coming along nicely. Her back muscles and leg muscles are very weak and her gait is not normal, so she will begin to wair orthopedic leg braces this week. From a bladder and bower perspective, that jury is still out. We unfortunately have not seen any improvement since the surgery. We are attempting to get her into a specialist at Staten Island who works with Spina Bifida pediatric urology cases. It is very common for individuals with SB to have these complications for life, so we are trying to just get underneath it to learn more what we can do for her. Socially, this kid is just amazing. She has a really upbeat personality and loves her brothers. She is all girl, but a great match for her brothers. She chases them everywhere and is really quite comfortable hangin' with her all brother pack. Aidan and she are best buddies....he is amazing around her. Declan, not so much. He loves to slam her fingers in doors or lock her in a closet if nobody is watching. :)
3/27/10 Teagan's eardrum perferated 48 hours before surgery, and it was not possible to put in a tube. Because her adenoids were enlarged, Dr. Jeff also decided to take those out, too. We trust his judgement, as he has done all of the boys tubes, adenoids, tonsils!! She is doing fantastic. Hopefully by taking care of one ear and the adenoids, we will avoid a duplicate trip for her other ear...but time will tell. It's probably 50/50. She was such a trooper....she is like a surgery PRO....barely cried, was super brave, and was up on her feet 2 hours later as if nothing happened. She "snored" quite loudly for the first several nights, but she is almost back to her quiet sleepful self.
Today we took all 4 kids to the circus! What a time we had. We have not done anything like that. Fun was had by all, but it was really a delight to see Teagan have so much fun, and observe her "go with the flow." She is such an easy to please and fun little girl. She loved the circus. It would be unfair of me not to mention was a good little boy Declan, was, too! He as absolutely cooperative and also such a sweetheart. The circus was a belated present for Aidan, and Mike and I decided to just "go for it" and bring all four kids. We made sure we ate our Wheaties for breakfast!!! We went with another family who was gracious enough to be VERY helpful to us. We even went out to eat a real restaurant after the circus. Again, I would have to give the kids a C or C+....but it was literally our first time eating out in a restaurant since we have had Teagan home. We got home about 9:00, and they were all pretty much asleep by 9:15!
Teagan continues to have PT. She can take about 4 steps....but not much more. She is cruising and walking assisted, but definitely still having challenges walking on her own. We are closely monitoring her bowel and bladder functionality, and have a host of dr' appts over the next few weeks.....Ear, Pulmonary, Bladder and Ortho!
Thanks again for all of the support for T.
3/14/2010: Teagan is getting tubes in her ears Tues. morning. This is a low risk procedure, but please pray for her. Both of her eartdrums have perforated in the last 10 days. Today, being the latest. She is such a trooper. Alsp please pray for our dear friends, the Atteberry family, as their son Timmy undergoes a very extensive, serious, and complicated heart surgery tomorrow.
On a greener note, Teagan survived her first St. Patrick's day at the Orr house (or party, I should say.) This entry is dedicated to our wonderful Declan, who, for those of you who know the long complicated story, played a key role in us getting Teagan. He turns 3 on St. Patrick's day. He was born in 2007 and I call him my Lucky 7!
3/7/2010: So, we have come out of the snow, winter, fog, storm,.....Between the NE winter and Teagan, we had our hands full. She had a few minor complications...or side issues. Her wound didn't heal entirely easily and she ended up with pneumonia, all very scary and stressful for us. Also, she has had non stop ear infections, which is causing us to put the poor thing through another procedure, but we believe it will improve the quality of her life enormously. She cannot get rid of her ear infections despite all the antibiotics she has been on. So, in true Orr fashion, Dr. Lebenger will put tubes in her ears next week. Her physical therapy is coming along well. She has one leg and foot slightly smaller than the other. She is very very weak still...so, there is a huge hill to climb. She shows signs that she will be able to walk at some point, but it's certainly not going to be anytime too soon. She continues to cruise and we are trying to help her build endurance. She has an incredible and delightful spirit. She is such a fun baby. She is speech delayed as well....but hard to tell what exactly that means. She can say bout 5-10 words, but she is extremely alert and observant, so to me it's just all of her background that has caused this. She is a real little girl, she loves shoes....she goes in my closet and spreads them all out....tries them on, puts them on her hands and walks around. She loves jewelry. Its so funny to see how different she is from the boys....a welcome change from the norm.
1/31/10: It was a rough week. Teagan was in a lot of pain, but the pain meds cause constipation along with the lack of movement in general. We had a little success on Thursday getting her to "go", but nothing that great. Yesterday morning, Mike and I gave it our last ditch efforts, and the dams opened....I won't go through it, but lets say things have taken a different direction. With all those stitches, this new direction is just as worrisome and stressful. Teagan is finally drinking again. She was not eating or drinking much of anything while she was uncomfortable. The shots of her in the hospital make her look like she's gained weight, but in reality that was just all the fluids. She is back to her more petite self. In general, things are fabulous....its just the ongoing pressure to watch her constantly and what seems like non-stop diaper checking/changing events. We had extra help this week.....first Mike's sister Nancy who helped us get through the surgery playing many roles and then later an extra babysitter so Floribeth could focus just on T during the day. Huge Thank You to Nancy!! I put some new photos of her baptism prior to the surgery and some hospital shots that were not from our cell phone. You can click the album to see the whole thing and the picture of her surgical site. I know it's kind of graphic, but he removed a tumor that on the outside was the size of an orange, so was obviously bigger in total.
1/24/10: After another round of antibiotics and pain relief, Teagan is free to go. I learned a lot today from the resident neuro surgeon regarding spina bifida that was helpful. Also, the doctors were really helpful in explaining to me how critical OT can be for her right now. (and I thought we could REST) She cannot have a bath for 60 days! Really need to protect the surgical site. Things are really looking up, though. Thanks for all of the prayers and warm thoughts. It takes a village, and Teagan has an amazing village!!!
1/23/10: 7:30 pm Teagan went pee pee!!!! This is huge for a Spina Bifida child who just had the surgery she had. Very very good news. Doesn't mean that everything is perfect, but another sign in the right direction, and from what we understand, her prognosis is a lot more favorable now! Deep sigh of relief.
1/23/10: Teagan had a lot of pain through the night, driving her heart rate higher. We managed it by giving her morphine and tylenol. Not unusual, but of course when it is YOUR kid, it's not any fun. I slept with her in bed, which I think she enjoyed. She kept playing with my zipper. It reminded my own hospital stays...someone in every hour to make sure you are not getting rest! ;) Today, we took out her cath, so will see if she pees on her own. She isn't keeping food down, though, which is not helping either. Ordering zophran to try to help the nausea. It was not fun throwing up and having to be completely washed down, re-sheeted, etc! She is hanging in there, though. All in all, we feel very blessed...there are some beautiful but very ill children here, which is heartbreaking.
1/22/2010: Surgery went very well. Doctor was able to get nearly all of the tumor out, the lipomeningocele out of the spinal cord. Surgery was 3 hours, and knowing what we knew from the MRI went as well as it could have. We need to wait until Sunday to get an initial read out on her bladder and bowel. She is resting comfortably with the assistance of narcotics! Thanks for all of your prayers! They are working.
1/21/10 Surgery at 7:00 a.m. Mike and his sister Nancy are there with Teagan now, and at some point tomorrow we will swap. I am with the boys, and we prayed a lot for her tonight. I am on pins and needles!
1/17/10 ok! This is the week a lot about Baby KaKa's (Teagan's) future is really determined. We had a private ceremony this weekend with just the godparents (Christine and Brian Peters) and our kids to both baptize and annoint Teagan for the sick. This is done in preparation for serious surgeries such as hers. We appreciated the church's flexibility in getting Teagan in, and due to the seriousness of her condition and the big week coming up for us, we put traditional baptismal celebrations aside and quietly hung out and wished Teagan the best with her godparents and Declan's godparents. The other godparents are not local, but would have been here if they were!. Please keep Teagan in your prayers. She is doing so wonderfully, so if we can just keep up this track record. Her surgeon is Dr. Leslie Sutton, and we pray that God is with him for this surgery that is so important to our family. As usual, thank you to everyone for your support and kindness throughout the process. Surgery is on for this Friday!! Blessings, Sara and Mike
1/10/10 Surgery scheduled for January 22nd at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). We appreciate your prayers!
1/1/10
Hello...Here's an update from the visit to see Dr. Wisoff at NYU and Dr. Sutton at CHOP after T's MRI. First, both neuro surgeons were nearly identical in their clinical assessment of Teagan, so that's good. We are not dealing with differing opinions. Bottom line, she has a much more complex form of SB than we originally expected. However, in our preparation for all possible outcomes, we knew this was a possibilitiy, prayed it wouldnt be, but prepared ourselves just in case. So, we are not devestated or shocked. We are sad for T that it has to be this way, but we are happy that we can get her outstanding medical care to optimize her ourcome. Rather than a straight-forward meningocele, she has a lipo(myelo)meningocele.
What is a lipomyelomeningocele?
This is a congenital lesion that is associated with Spina Bifida (congenital failure of closure of the spinal bones). This is associated with abnormal fat accumulation that starts below the level of the skin and extends through the bony opening to the spinal cord. The lesion itself is composed of a descended conus medullaris infiltrated by fat, which continues out of a dural, bony, and fascial defect to emerge as a skin-covered subcutaneous mass that is usually found in the lumbosacral region. An intramedullary lipoma is a lipoma of the conus medullaris that does not extend outside the dura.
Dr. Wisoff explained kind of the same thing...it's not the fatty tumor we're so much worried about as the fat that has deposited into the spinal cord opening. He was very informative and willing to "educate" us of. Dr. Wisoff said that he believes Teagan has lost some sensation in her feet and that she also seems to have a lost some sensation in her diaper area...the actual skin. He was willing to give us odds...he said there is a 15% chance that we will lose functionality of bladder/bowel..so 85% chance that things will improve. He said that it really doesn't matter though, if we are the 15% where it doesn't work...(This I know from having my PE...!!!!) Both surgeons point out the importance of the pediatric urogologyst as being a partner in the whole thing. We need to get the surgery done...not an option to not do the surgery, as things will progressively worsen. We will want to bring in a plastic surgeon too..they will get a good portion of the tumor removed, but that it won't be all of it and that the plastic surgeon will be a better choice to close up.
So, on deck next week is pediatric urology work ups, then probably scheduling the surgery for late January. Will you keep you posted. In the meantime, she continues to be the happies baby in the world. She doesn't like going to bed at night...I think she wonders if she'll wake up with us!! She doesn't cry....just sits in her crib and babbles for about an hour+....once she's asleep, its for a good 10+ hours and nothing much bothers her.
12/27/09 Tomorrow T has her MRI, which involves sedation. Yikes. Mike is taking her and she will be in very good hands at Overlook Hospital. I will take care of her at home in the afternoon...rocking her and making sure she's doing ok. We then have the urology consultation followed by study over the next two weeks. Once both of those are complete, we'll talk to the surgeons and decide a course of action. One cute Chinese baby step at a time.
12/24/09 "Made in China, Loved in the USA" This was theme of our Christmas cards. We mean it to be fun, but also are unbelievably thankful and indebted to the countless "village" of caretakers that loved Teagan in China and made it possible for her to become our daughter. We are forever grateful. We plan to keep her very close to her Chinese heritage, and she will begin Chinese emersion school in the fall (Kellen already attends).
I have been under the weather, so Mike is helping me get these up. We wanted to show you our video homecoming, but somehow our flip camera has gone underground for the time being. For those families who traveled with us, that nasty bug finally got the better of me and I ended up in the hospital for four days. I have heard other families reporting of similar sickness once home. I am home on limited activity and Mike and Floribeth have everything completely under control! The kids are all doing well, so that's the good news. Teagan is doing well. We still need several doctor's appointments for her. Uro-dynamics study. MRI. Once we know the outcome of those, then we know more about what to expect with her surgery. We are nervous because she is just so perfect. The surgeries are complex and can damage one thing to fix another, so we will need to pray that her streak of luck is in tact! The boys love her...treat her "just right"...special enough, but not TOO special. For example, she better keep her hands in her OWN bowl of popcorn and out of their's! They share their toys and they share their mom. Teagan and Declan have the double mommy snuggle in the reclyner down to a fine art. She's so little she can fit in anywhere. Declan is massive, but thinks he's 6 months old. It's pretty cute. They are doing double potty training. I need to get that photo posted. As usual, thanks for all the support and kindness you have shown our family throughout this process. We are truly blessed.
12/3/09: It's Thursday night here in GZ and we are nearly packed and ready to go. We leave our hotel at 7:30 am and fly from GZ to Beijing. Hang in Beijing for 5 hours, then hop aboard our Continental flight back to Newark. Teagan has NO IDEA what is waiting for her on the other side...as far as she knows, Americans just go on busses, shop, file forms, and eat elaborate breakfast buffets! She can probably count on hard boiled eggs and cheerios, but congee and exotic noodles may be a distant past. We just cannot wait to wake up Saturday morning in our own home with all of our kids under one roof. It is going to be super fun to watch Declan and Aidan meet Teagan. We've kind of told her about them....but I have a feeling she thinks its just the four of us! Thanks to all of you for the support and well wishes...and following along with us! We are truly blessed by God and appreciate the opportunity to have all four of our kids in our lives!
12/2/09: We took T's oath today. When we hit American soil, there is one final process to make her a citizen. I cried...it's been such a journey, and we are SO READY to be home with our Declan and Aidan and be all together as a family. We went shopping in the morning...Teagan had some corn on the cob, but we all passed up the deep fried chicken feet! Tomorrow, we pack! No agenda, just have to WAIT to get her Visa delivered to us. There is a 24 hour period to wait which is a more recent requirement...but I don't know the origin of the change....unless its part of an economic stimulus package! I think Guangzhou may be bigger than NYC. If you get the chance to Wikipidia it, it's incredibly huge and booming like you wouldn't believe. There is construction everywhere. It seems like a "city of the future." I can imagine it is a future economic pulse. It's like being in two worlds...there are these buildings that have gone up that are futuristic and literally like they are from a movie....then there is the poverty and chicken feet! Very interesting place...hopefully the smog will improve over the future. The people are very kind to us.
12/1/09:
Added red couch photos. It was really cute to see all of the kids dressed up. I had to steal a photo with the twin girls, who were from the other CCAI group. They were dressed almost the same as T, so it was cute to see them together.
We got photos of all of the families, which we will treasure. While we are all itching to be home, I'm also sure that we will look back at this trip with great amazement. The one thing I can't say enough about is how it's so much easier to breathe in this hotel. The non-smoking wing seems to actually be smoke free, which has been fantastic. We were informed that all of the US paperwork is in order for T, which means that we really are about to complete this process!! Sounds easy, but this is actually pretty complicated. One family has an issue, so there are lots of phone calls and faxing going on to correct the situation. One tiny wrong number on one of the dozens of English to Chinese to English to Chinese docs can cause your Visa to get delayed, declined, etc! This is where having the best possible agency, makes all of the difference in the world.
11/30/09:
We have been in Guangzhou for 4 days now. The flight was about 2+ hours to get here. Saturday she had her medical check up. It is where all the families go to start their paperwork for the US government. We then filled out her Visa/Citizenship docs. Then more waiting. We toured a temple yesterday and all the babies were blessed by a monk. We then went jade shopping. We bought T a traditional Chinese jade necklace. Today we did more touring...the Pearl Market. There we got a few special things as well. Tomorrow we actually deliver all her papework to the US Consulate and hope everything is in order. If it is, then we wait until Wednesday and are sworn in then. Thursday we get her passport and Visa. Friday, it's home! We also bought Kellen a Starbucks Guanghzhou T-shirt. Starbucks with goatmilk just not quite the same. I prefer the green tea. I received my 6th nebulizer machine today. Our kids may have to delay college for what we have spent in nebulizers and shipping! Yes...6. We came with one and blew it on 220 volts. Then we bought a Chinese one and didn't know how to use it, so we donated to the orphanage. Then after a week, my sister's nebulizer arrived from California after a long delay in customs. It worked 24 hours, when Mike accidentally plugged it into 220 again!! So, we bought another nebulizer...A Chinese one...it worked for 1 day and blew...couldn't blame it on the voltage, just really bad luck! So, luckily, another arrived from my sister today.,...and the factory fixed the Chinese one we have! In the meantime, I have had 3 treatments in the Chinese clinic. I am on a first name basis with the doc! I crack him up, I think. He is totally sweet to me. He seems about 70! He has one of those moles with a three inch hair coming out of it, which I know is very respected here. I feel like I'm at camp when I was 9 and I used to have to go the clinic for my allergy shots! I wrote down how I had the pulmonary embolism with Declan, so he understood my need for nebulizer. And I met a kindred spirit here....another adoptive mom with Asthma. She has her nebulizer, and I loaned her my face masks as she was suffering from the pollution. There are probably 50+ families at this hotel...25 or so from our agency, CCAI. It is so neat to see all the parents and tell our stories. Tomorrow is red couch day. This is an adoption tradition....the kids dress up in traditional clothing and get a pic on the red couch. I am bucking the system and got T a little pantsuit that I fell in love with. Hope I don't regret, as she kind of looks like a boy if I don't "pink" her up! Also, we rode the elevator with the Vice President of Uganda! Just us, his guard, and him! He loved Kellen's red hair...and when Kellen was shy to speak to him, he told him to be a brave man! He was a very friendly gentleman. We met a really nice family from Fort Collins (where Mike's oldest sister Di lives). We have had two Kevin Bacon moments so far.....so that's been fun. A couple here who adopted twins is best friends with my friend in Atlanta (Amy)'s next door neighbor!
11/25/09: Yesterday we took a family vote, and we decided to keep her! We were hoping Aidan and Declan would be a yes to make it unanimous! ;) We went to the Registration Office at 9:30. We were very fortunate to have Lily and Josh there from CCAI. Our adoption was extra special as the new official that makes the CCAI and Henan partnership successful attended our group's adoption. It was very moving and special to know this program is helping so many special needs children. Following that, we had to go to the notary office to get all of our papers ready for passports. Lots of paperwork. We neeed a passport to get to Guangzhou..where we apply for US Visa and Citizenship. In the afternoon, we recovered...but not for too long before we went to the shopping center for some baby food and misc. groceries. Today we had a "free time" day. There are not really too many activities for a family to do. We are a bit hotel locked. This afternoon we went shopping with another adopting family It was interesting as we walked the backroads. You will see some pictures of the people surrounding us. They are very fascinated by US folks adoptiing the Chinese children. I knew to have Teagan VERY bundled up to not get in trouble with the locals. My asthma has really kicked in, so Dr. G. does not want me out in public without a mask...so, you will see me with that on. The good news in China is that I fit right in with that on! Nobody things twice about wearing a mask. The people here are wonderful and very lovely towards us. Our CCAI guides are incredible!
Teagan is sweet. She has begun to giggle a lot for us and has started to repeat words. She can say MaMa and DaDa and a pretty darn close Teagan. Kellen is hard for everyone. She is an excellent eater. We feed her formula, crackers, cheerios, congi and noodles. Oh, she likes omelettes too...we have an excellent breakfast buffet everyday. We are very concerned about getting her to Shriners or CHOP when we return. Her situation may be a little more complicated than we believed, which is not a surprise or a shock to us, as we were very much cautioned to be prepared for this. It's nothing we are overly concerned about, but it does seem that her left foot is turned in a bit. This could be nothing, but with a Spina Bifida child, it certainly is clue that she needs to get a scan to determine if there has been some tethering. I only know enough to be dangerous, but this is something I do know to get checked out soon. If there is tethering, I'm hopint that the tumor and the tethering repair could be corrected simultaneously. Her behavior and physcial demeanor shows no signs of anything wrong. She doesn't seem bothered in any way by her tumor and we have been looking for anything that indicates it hurts her. It's fairly large, but she sleeps on her back and I can't identify anything that is "different than any of my other kids in how she reacts to play, movement, etc. She is walking with assistance and is a great coffee table cruiser. If I were not on "high alert" I do not even think anyone would notice her turned in foot. It was never mentioned in her reports, but a picture we have of her made me "look" for it immediately. Another couple said they couldn't see it...so I may be a little over anxious. However, she will get help in time and this is certainly not anything that is an emergency or that will harm her if it goes on a few more weeks. We certainly feel very blessed. Thanksgiving is very special for us this year, even though we are not with Declan and Aidan They will spend Thanksgiving with Grandma Judy and Aunt Amy. Kellen is actually jealous. We are planning on spending it with all of the families here...we may actually get KFC and eat it in a meeting room! It could possibly be better than some of the meals I have served!! ;) Wishing everyone God's blessings and health this Thanksgiving.
p.s. I will not be checking emails while away, so just wanted to let you know that I am not being unresponsive in case you have reached out to me.
11/23/09: We have her. She is doing well. She has taken really well to all of this, but is fascinated by Mike. She is a good eater. This has been really incredible. Tomorrow we officially adopt her. The process includes 24 hours of guardianship prior to signing. We are definitely a "go." :) It has been so amazing to share this experience with the other families. Having an instant support network is so wonderful when going through so much...and being in a distant place. Well, I think the gotcha pictures say more than I can in words. We miss Aidan and Declan so much, but they are doing well with Flori and Aunt Amy!
11/21/2009: Today we decided to relax. Kellen and I both have pretty decent colds, so we thought it best to rest up before Teagan! Kellen and Mike walked around the city and went swimming. Kellen's red hair is very much a novelty here, and lot's of strangers ask to get their pictures taken with him or come make conversation with him. Mike has a pretty funny video of everyone doing this. Also there was drama at the pool. Kellen cut his toes on something at the bottom of the pool. Two bleeding toes. Later on, a fruit bowl, bon-bons and an authentic Chinese porcelein tea set was delivered to us by the manager, who also offered to take him to the hospital! We couldn't see anything in there, so hoping they heal ok.
11/20/2009: We are here in Beijing....and we have two words: REALLY COLD. Very rough day touring...must have walked 5 miles in what seemed to be pretty frigid weather because there is such a bitter windchill. We were touring historic landmarks...Forbidden City, Olympic Village, Tiananmen Square, but I will admit that between Kellen being frustrated and my own chills, it wasn't as enjoyable as it might have been if it were in the 60's! Although leaving Declan and Aidan behind was so incredibly hard, it was the right decision. Cannot even imagine what it would have been like with them...considering it started with 24 hours of traveling! Our plane was over 5 hours late getting out of Newark. Tons of lugging around of luggage. On the plan, then off the plane while they fixed it, then back on the plane. I felt like I needed a babysitter for me! ;) Kellen was a total trooper on the plane. He was pretty cold today, though, and he doesn't do "cold" so stoically. Also, it was an extra treat getting re-acquainted with the squatty potties! Remember those from my trip to Asia with Robin! We have now met all of the other families, and it's so fun getting to know everyone's adoption stores. There are 14 families in our CCAI group, and we are all here for special needs kids of some pretty broad age ranges. There are two other families besides us adding "number four" to their number of kids!
11/08/09: Update: We have a consulate appointment! We are traveling Nov. 18th! Whoo hoo! If you want to see an update of Teagan, there is one below. It's a PDF foster care update and has a new picture. It's cute, even if she is dressed in boy clothes!! ;)
11/03/09: Music to our ears. Today we learned we have China Travel Approval. We hope to travel late November.
10/26/09: We are still waiting for Travel Approval!! Hoping to travel Nov. 18th! We will probably travel to Beijing for 1-3 nights to rest and tour a little bit before meeting Tegan. Then we will fly from Beijing to Henan, where we will spend 5-7 nights. We will probably meet Teagan within the first 24-36 hours of being there. During that time, we will register the adoption with the Chinese Government, apply for her passport, tour, rest and get to know know here while we wiat for paperwork. Then onto Guangzhou where the U.S. Consulate is located. This is where we get her Visa to come to the US. Then either fly back to Beijing or fly home from Hong Kong. The trip is about 14-16 days.
10/20/09: We have our immigration approval!! Whoo hoo!! So, our next step is to wait for China to give us a thumbs up that we can travel. We will get an official invitation to travel to officially adopt Teagan, and our agency will have to work with the US Consolate in Guangzho China to get a Visa date...so we can get her back here as a US Citizen!! Pins and Needles!!!!
10/3/09: We got fingerprinted today for amended homestudy and immigration paperwork update AND we received Kellen's passport! Double Win! Whoo hoo! So, now we wait for Immigration to look at our prints and eventually issue as an updated immigration document to bring Miss Teagan Margaret KaiLi home! Our timeline now is about 2-4 weeks for paperwork and 4-6 weeks to travel. If we were really lucky, we could still go end of November. Our chances of having a Christams with her are very strong!!! We found Teagan's "finding ad." She is about 4 mos old then and it states tha tshe was abandoned at 1 day old under an overpass. We knew that, but it was interesting to see it printed in the paper.
9/26/09: It was a stressful week, as we learned that Teagan's paperwork couldn't be processed until the USCIS (Dept of Homeland Security / Immigration) paperwork on our side was complete. Long story, but after a lot of help from anyone who would listen, a very lovely email arrived today (Saturday) that we can proceed with fingerprinting next Friday...that hopefully will get us official papers within 4-5 weeks. At that point, China can then begin to give us a travel date range. The adoption date happens your first week of the China visit and the Visa to get her here as a naturalized citizen happens the second week..in a completely different place. Kind of like starting in NYC, and ending in Dallas, in US distance terms. Its the Autumn Moon Festival, a very important holiday for China. We sent Teagan's orphanage "Mooncakes" to celebrate!
9/19/09: On 9/14 we were shocked to find out that we have Letter of Acceptance from China!! This was not meant to happen for several more weeks. No explaining it, but it appears that things are speeding up in China. This means a lot of wonderful little children will be with their forever families sooner! Next steps are to get her approved immigration forms (in process) and then let China know we are good to go so they can set up the adoption date!!
Today we got Kellen's passport applications and started our Visa application process. We are expecting to travel in November. The amount of preparation just for traveling is a little unnerving! We also sent Teagan another care package, with some fun stuff for some of the older girls at the orphanage. And, for the first time, I finally felt "safe" buying Teagan a couple of dresses at the Gymboree sale online.
09/07/09: We sent Teagan another care package on Saturday. This time there was a cute little "panda in a purse" toy along with some chocolates for her foster mommy and some cute leggings/onesies. In my opinion, I have used EXTREME restraint with baby Teagan. There are not new dresses or clothes in her closet (yet). I still feel like this is surreal, and trying to stay level headed.
8/25/09: Our Jersey boys, along with Mike and I, are proud to announce that we are adding to our family. A special little girl from Henan, China, has found us, and we were notified today in writing that we are moving to the next stage of the process! For the next many weeks, our dossier (which took about a year to put together and get authenticated) will be in a review process. We will eventually get a Letter of Approval. That signifies that everything is in order and that a travel date is under review. Then a few more weeks go by and we should get a Travel Approval...then it's off to China to pick up this sweetie. There are no guarantees about the process, but we are expecting a window of 3 to 5 months before Teagan is home. We also on this side are going through an immigration renewal process for this little sweetie, which is also fairly intensive.
I attached a photo book that I have sent to Teagan.
I told the boys that she is the best Christmas present we could hope for...but they want to know if we are going to wrap her!!
Her Chinese name is Dang, Ka Ka (affectionately Baby Kakes). We are honoring the K sound of her name by making her middle name KaiLi. We will preserve every bit of information we are able to find about her. We are still looking for one more middle name for her that will be linked to her heritage. If you want to find out more about her, of course, email me offline!

KaiLi: Victorious & Beautiful
Teagan's name
Teagan is of Irish origin (yes...had to keep up the theme with her brothers!). I had this on my list of names for Declan for those first few months when we didn't know he was a boy. We decided we'd adopt in China at an ultrasound done of Declan at 14 weeks when we knew he was a boy!! :) While we always wanted 4 children, with our complications with Declan, we knew our path was set for adoption. Michael's wonderful and cherished mother was named Margaret, and we love the name. KaiLi is our version of keeping some of Ka Ka's heritage. It preserves the K sound. Kai means "victorious" and Li means "beautiful." She is victorious in that she has persevered through everything and of course she is beautiful in our eyes! :)

Praying for you all... please feel free to call anytime. The first 24-48 hours after surgery will be rough. You are going to want to hold her so bad, and the best thing is for her to remain mostly flat... if she's not hooked up to too much stuff, get up on the bed with her and lie down next to her... it'll make you feel better too. Oh, and bring lots of DVDs... There's lots of stuff on my blog about Katelyn's surgery and post-surgery stuff if you want to read it. Hugs!!!!!!

God certainly has a way of putting the right people in our paths just when we need them. How blessed Teagan is to have found such a wonderful family. How blessed you are to have found a beautiful little girl waiting to be loved. Can't wait to see her coming home book. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers until she is safe and sound with her new family.

Letter to Teagan
This is the letter that we sent to Teagan through a translator. It is our first communications to her.
Hello Baby Ka Ka,
We are bursting with joy that you are going to be in our family! You have three big brothers: Kellen who is 6. Aidan who is 4. Declan who is 2. We also have a really nice doggy named Maddie. We live in Chatham, New Jersey. We have a big back yard with lots of fun things to do and a big swing set to play on! We have a special swing just for you. We have wanted you for a long long time! We love you so so much! Your daddy’s name is Michael and your mommy’s name is Sara. We are busy decorating your own special bedroom and getting you some wonderful new things to play with. Your brothers are also planning on sharing all of their toys with you. They are going to teach you so many things. We are sending you a dolly, so be looking out for it!
You are such a pretty girl with the most beautiful smile! The moment we saw you, we knew that you would be our daughter! We cannot wait to meet you and bring you home to your forever family. Sweet dreams, little girl.
We Love You!!!
