Summer Reading
Over the summer, I read a couple of the Newbery Winners, a lot of magazines, and a lot of picture books :) I helped my daughter read 100 books for the Athens-Clarke County Library's summer reading program. For myself, I've been working on slowly reading all the Newbery Winners for a couple of years. I read Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. The next winner (going backwards) is The Grey King, but when I realized it was part of a series (and wasn't the first book), I had to start with the first one. I have a thing about that...I can't read series books out of order. Over Sea, Under Stone is about some kids who are trying to find an ancient treasure. A group of mean and ruthless adults is also after the same treasure, so it gets a little scary, but the good guys win in the end. What to do with the treasure now that it's been found and the history of the treasure is what author Susan Cooper writes about in her other books. Next is The Dark is Rising (a Newbery Honor book), and then finally The Grey King!
Igraine the Brave
This book is by Cornelia Funke, author of Dragon Rider. I've read about 1/3 so far. Igraine is the daughter of a King and Queen, but she wants to be knight, not a princess. She gets her chance to prove herself when an evil neighbor plans to steal her family's magic books. Igraine's parents have accidently turned themselves into pigs, so it is up to her to save them, the books, and the castle!
There's a Dead Person Following My Sister Around
The last kid book I read was There's a Dead Person Following My Sister Around by Vivian Van De Velde. This boy's little sister starts seeing the ghost of a girl and talking to her. Then he starts seeing her, and then the cousin says she saw the same ghost years ago. Strange things start happening, and they decide to find out who the ghost is and what she wants. There's a little bit of history blended with just the right amount of creepiness. Find it in the ghost section.
Next, I'm going to read Igraine the Brave because MH told me I'd like it.
