Class Updates & News

Spring is a time for blossoming creativity!

Students returned to Art class this spring excited and ready to jump into their independent projects. The Spring semester is a time we focus on developing original ideas the way that professional artists do -- by considering our audience, the message we want our art to send and by making intentional choices as we plan out how we will manifest our goals.

Since the intention is to focus on the artistic process, students are given questions to consider and they bounce ideas off of each other in class. They learn to translate ideas into physical works of art while discussing the process. Once they have a plan, they go for it, always ready for surprises and new discoveries to arise as they create.

This spring, students are exploring a variety of media. Several students have chosen to paint; Charlie is emanating a favorite artist as he paints the portrait of his dog. Mariah is exploring texture and mixed media in a painting about inspiration and creativity. We also have some graphic artists and photographers; Mardi is creating a Lang calendar and Lizzi has been developing a portfolio of portrait photography.

Griffin, Hunter and Trevor are creating a life size stencil and a mural for the backboard. Now, when students play ball, it will seem that they are looking down into a baseball stadium. Jack has focused on furniture design, and he is creating an original shoe rack. Aleck worked with block printing and he and Jake are now throwing pottery on the wheel. Ronnie finding new ways to use spray paint.

These are but a few examples of some of the diverse and interesting art that is being created this spring.

Check out the photos to see the works in progress!

First project completed - Fall 2010

The first academic block is over and students completed their first art project before leaving for camp. As always, the survey I handed out at the beginning of the year helped me determine what students were interested in exploring. Two classes chose to design and paint their ski helmets; one class chose to create a collaborative painting. The students in the advanced art class work independently, and we had some exploring painting, print making and sculpture.

The ski helmet project was really exciting. It was a great experience of learning a process through trail and error. We were fortunate enough to use top of the line automotive paint and equipment, lent to us by Steve B. Students studied the art of stencils and looked at work by contemporary artists such as Bansky. Even as we struggled with the paints, the Burkies pushed through with their great attitude and willingness to take risks. At the end, we had learned so much. We were able to accomplish different affects with the paints, from blending, sharp vs. classic stencils, fading colors, etc. We learned so much from the process, and the product ended up being pretty fantastic as well.

The collaborative painting was an idea that came from the students. Together, they chose a couple of album covers and we collaged the two together to make our final design. Next, we divided it up into a grid and students took different parts of the puzzle and recreated each section on canvas. As our original print got smaller, a large painting began to come together. Our goal was to experience how everyone sees and reproduces color differently. The differences added richness, while the precision and great care each student put forth helped unify the piece and create a beautiful painting. This 4' x 5' painting is hanging framed in the library.

Spring Update

Spring is here and students are back in Art class, working on their final, independent art project. Everyone wrote up a proposal, planned out their piece in their sketchbook and is they are now working hard!

The 5th period class also spent the first week wrapping up the collective painting experiment of Burke Mountain... it is looking really great! The goal of this assignment was to have each student create a couple of abstract paintings that could stand on their own, but when put together with the other paintings in the class, an image of Burke Mountain would reveal itself to the viewer. The installation will be tricky, but hopefully we'll have it up by the end of this week in the student gallery.

Here are some of the projects that the students are working on:

Mardi is designing and sowing a graduation dress.
Maggy is working on an abstract painting, exploring texture and layers in acrylic.
Trevor is taking nature photographs of special spots on the Kingdom Trails and then creating a poster as a final presentation.
Charlie and Ronnie are working on an animation.
Carter, Nick, Mike, Chris, Kerstin & Hunter are creating great block prints.
Eliza is painting a portrait a la Andy Warhol.
Jenna is creating a lively multi media painting.
Cate and Lizzie are working in clay, both hand building and on the wheel.
Kieffer is creating a dinner set for two on the wheel.
Griffin is designing and sowing a T shirt made of bandannas.
Jocelyn is creating a giant inspirational collage.
Myles is creating a screen print T shirt.
Bug is working on a portrait made entirely of magazine print.
Kelsey is painting Burke Mountain and the Gap at sunset.
Brittney is creating a photo montage made of images taken through the years, creating a 360 degree view of the campus.
Claire is creating a block print a la vintage ski poster.
Jack has created some great block prints and is now starting a painting.
Alex is creating a parody of a crafty stitch image.

I am also working outside of class with some student volunteers on touching up the mural in our cafeteria, which features a cross section of the GMR run. We are hoping to give it a "face lift" before GMR and for the 40th anniversary gathering this summer.

So all in all, there is lots of great art making on campus! With spring, here comes the color!

Photos coming soon...

November Update

BMA just celebrated Halloween on Friday, and the costumes were incredible! To see the amazing creativity, visit the photo album "Halloween 09".

The students had a photography assignment for camp, where they were asked to take 15 images showing the rules of composition. Their work was wonderful and I will post some of these images after I get their permission.

In the classroom, students have completed their clay sculptures and displayed them with a description explaining their work. They are now working on realistic pencil drawings and learning about value, contrast, and shading.

The 5th period class has their drawings on display in the BMA Art Gallery in Frazier and they are working on a large collaborative painting. Together, we created a design using multiple canvases. While each canvas will be an abstract painting and can stand on its own, together, they will make up a colorful image of Burke Mountain.

The Advanced Art class completed their beautiful flower oil paintings, which you can see in their album. They are now starting another oil painting, this time a still life. The students are noticing how much easier it is the second time around!

Next week, we are going to have the great pleasure of receiving photographer Micheael Sibilia at BMA. Mike has worked with my art students in the past; he has great work that he will share and wonderful tips. Last year, he went on a photo shoot with the kids and this year he will teach us about printing our images.  Students will show him their work from Chile and we will display the printed photographs on campus. To check out his website, go to: MichaelSibilia.Com

Finally, I have created a pottery studio in the entryway space next to the art classroom. We have 2 pottery wheels and a lot of interest from the whole community. I will be holding orientations over the next two weeks to get people familiar with the equipment and process. It is my hope that we can have the pottery studio available for students and staff to use after hours and during the winter. It is such an incredibly relaxing and fun activity -- I think we will all be able to use that in the winter!

As always, feel free to contact me for any reason.

Best regards,
Marysia

Classes are completing their first project

Students are beginning to complete their sculptures. The clay heads are drying in the sun so we can paint them upon the student's return from Chile. In the meantime, students have begun their drawing assignments. We are using a grid transfer method and they are learning to create realistic shadows and highlights. Many are drawing self portraits.

The class that started with grid drawings is also getting close to completing their work. Perhaps we will use this grid technique to paint a mural on campus.

The advanced art class has been working hard on their oil paintings. For both of the girls, it is their first time using oils. Today we had a breakthrough as both girls truly got some techniques down. These paintings have taken a while since the project was just as much about painting flowers as it was about figuring out the medium. We discussed doing another oil painting after this one; I am sure the girls will be surprised how much easier it is the second time around.
