NLF Great Antonio Freeman Partners with Baltimore's 2011 Summer Food Service Program

 

Today, Baltimore native and Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Antonio Freeman joined Baltimore's Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, city and state officials, Maryland Hunger Solutions, and business partners to announce details about the 2011 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The program, which is administered by Baltimore Housing's Office of Community Services, will officially start on June 20th and will run though August 19th, 2011. Children ages 18 and under will receive a nutritional breakfast and lunch five days a week during the summer months when schools are closed.

 

Freeman's charitable foundation, B'MoreFree Programs is partnering with the Summer Food Service initiative to help promote the availability of free meals to children during the summer.  Additionally, B'MoreFree Programs will be implementing its Charm City Literacy Challenge at ten sites, throughout Baltimore City, that will be receive summer meals.

BMOREFREE PROGRAMS & PARTNERS LAUNCH 2ND ANNUAL "CUTS 4 KIDS"
FREE BACK-TO-SCHOOL HAIRCUTS FOR BOYS
 
(Baltimore, MD) August 14, 2010:  BmoreFree Programs, Inc., the charitable foundation of retired Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer Antonio Freeman, is hosting the 2nd Annual Cuts 4 Kids program which will offer free, back-to-school haircuts to 200 boys from families in need on Sunday, August 29, 2010 in Baltimore, MD.  The Cuts 4 Kids program is being offered as a collaborative partnership with the Dale Talley-Branch Foundation, the Raising Him Alone Campaign, and Outside Locker Room.  As Chairman of BmoreFree Programs, Antonio Freeman states, "BmoreFree Programs and our partners understand the value of providing a young boy with a fresh hair-cut to boost a boy's self-confidence as the new school year starts. It's well known that a well-groomed person feels good about themselves and we want to give young boys an opportunity to look and feel good about themselves as they enter school on the first day. The free hair cuts will be provided by barbers at the following three participating barbershops on August 29th to families who have secured vouchers for the free hair cuts: Golden Shears located at 2420 E. Monument Street, Radiant Cuts Barbershop at 12-25 E. North Avenue, and Arthur Green at 1400 N. Luzerne Ave, Baltimore, MD; and on Sept. 5th, Theoz Barbershop will participate in BmoreFree Program's Cuts 4 Kids program as well.
 
Families in need can secure a voucher for a free hair cut for a young boy age 5 - 16 yrs old from BmoreFree Programs on Sat., August 21st from 1pm - 4pm at the Ark Church, located at 1263 E. North Avenue in Baltimore. Families in need are being identified via BmoreFree Programs' partnership with Dr. Bernard Harris Elementary School where BmoreFree Programs operates the Charm City Literacy Challenge program at the school for seventy 3rd, 4th and 5th grade boys.  Partnering organization, The Raising Him Alone Campaign which was co-founded by David Miller of Baltimore-based Urban Leadership Institute, conducts parental workshops at the same school and has committed to adopting a group of 4th grade boys of single mothers and providing the boys with monthly workshops on various topics.  Miller shares, "Our African-American boys are in great need of support to navigate the road of school and life in general successfully, and we are excited to be partnering with BmoreFree Programs for the Cut4 Kids Program to help the boys start the school year off knowing that there are African-American men who care about them ."  Additionally, The Ark Church, which is led by Rev. Dr. J. L. Carter and First Lady Cora Carter, will assist in identifying families in need from its congregation and the community who have sons who would benefit from the free hair cuts being provided by BmoreFree Programs and its partners.
 
BmoreFree Programs acknowledges that this year's Cuts 4 Kids program was empowered to a new level through its partnership with the Dale Talley Branch Foundation, which is led by Greg Branch -- a former Major League Baseball (MLB) and current professional baseball scout. Branch, who proudly supports youth in Baltimore, noted, "To some people, getting a haircut is just a normal way of life, but for families in need, a free haircut for their son will enable them to use money for some other school or household need. The small things really do matter."  As a result of the collaborative effort between the two organizations, each boy who receives a free hair cut will also receive a free drawstring bookbag with school supplies. The bookbags will be extra special for the boys, as each is imprinted with the names of both foundations, the autographs of both retired professional athletes (Antonio Freeman and Greg Branch), and the inspirational message "Education Starts at Home".

Our launch of BmoreFree Programs' 1st Annual Charm City Literacy Challenge at Dr. Bernard Harris Elementary School on 11/6/09, in partnership with Outside the Locker Room, was a huge success. Seventy (70) African-American boys in grades 3rd through 5th grade participated in the launch which challenges the boys to read 35 books between Nov. 2009 and May 2010 (which breaks down to 5 books per month).

The boys were excited to be selected by their principal, Ms. McCaskill, and their teachers to participate in the launch. Additionally, the opportunity to meet Packers Hall of Famer Antonio Freeman and other professional athletes from Baltimore who supported Freeman's literacy challenge launch was beyond the students' dreams.  To top it off, each student received a copy of the first book to read as part of the challenge, Mama's Boyz - Home Schoolin' by award winning author and illustrator Jerry Craft, and each student also was officially inducted into Antonio's A-List and received an autographed picture of Antonio Freeman.

What a powerful day!! The professional athletes enjoyed the book and the time spent with the students as much as the students did. To have positive African-American men from Baltimore, like Antonio Freeman, and his professional athlete friends from Baltimore to take time to sow into the lives of the young boys is awesome. Be sure to check out the photo album from the event above to see how the day unfolded and all of the professional athletes who attended and supported BmoreFree Program's literacy challenge.

For some, the launch and participating in this literacy challenge will be a game-changer for their attitude toward reading, and also possible a life-changing experience for many. As Freeman advised the the students, reading is needed for everything in life!!
