Closer to Home

PB210077.JPG
Nothin' like a Moldovan good-bye meal at the office!

PB210078.JPG
The office threw us a good-bye party. It was really sweet of them! We had a great time.

PB210079.JPG
Awww, they got the interns presents!!! We were pretty stinkin' happy.

PB210081.JPG
We were asked "how do you feel about going home" and this is how we answered.

PB210083.JPG
Really Jess, why did you have to get on that really sketchy bus and leave me like you did???? Please come back and make that face again.

DSCN6144.JPG
Everyone looks so happy. Wow.

IMG_0945.JPG
Scramble face at work...the rest of the office thought it was a bad idea, when in fact the lack of scramble face at work is a bad idea.

DSCN6151.JPG
Jess and Mer went outside to take pictures of their apartment. Once they were out there they yelled up to the third floor, "BE A BA-BA". Thus, this is my impression of a Moldovan Grandma.

DSCN6160.JPG
Genia's first time to McDonalds! Woot.

DSCN6163.JPG
Everyone in McDonalds thought I had gone crazy. They just don't understand that R2D2 and I are friends.

DSCN6164.JPG
Rockin' the McDonald's scene.

IMG_0946.JPG
Here are two reasons why I like Moldova.

IMG_0947.JPG
Jay and Silent Bob and PB&J unite.

IMG_0960.JPG
I feel like this is a good depiction of your greatness as a couple. Thus, it is shutterfly worthy.

IMG_0969.JPG
So I bought this hat from a lady on the street that had knitted it herself. She told me I looked good in it, and I bought it. It's pretty much my favorite now. (I really need to get over my weird hat obsession.)

IMG_0971.JPG
That's about right.

IMG_0975.JPG
Morgan got overcharged and was arguing with the waitress in Romanian. I think this picture captures the moment pretty well.

PB120017.JPG
I took a 14 hour train ride from Zap-town to Odessa while trying to get back to Moldova. The train cost me $12, and I slept the entire time except for 3 hours of the ride. You should also know, that this pictures makes it look better than it really was. Woot, Eastern European sleeper cars.

PB120021.JPG
Beding for the train

PB150023.JPG
I arrived back in Moldova with a huge smile on my face. This is my roomy for the time being...which is kind of a big commitment considering I'm not the cleanest roommate in the world.

PB150024.JPG
My weirdness also came back once I got into the presence of my friend Jess. It feels good to be weird again...espeically around you, Jess.

PB150025.JPG
One of the "normal" Jess-Bobbie pics from the 6 month stash I have.

PB150028.JPG
Marion came to see me! Love her.

PB150029.JPG
I hope you're laughing as loud as I am while you're looking at this picture.

DSCN6069.JPG
Jess and Mer met some people from Sweden that I got to hang out with on Saturday. This is Katya. She's a stud.

DSCN6072.JPG
This booth was our retreat place away from everyone else. Basically, I steal Jess from the world sometimes.

DSCN6074.JPG
We started a game of darts. Mer and I were on a team. She got a bulls-eye the first throw. STUD. Pretty sure we still lost though. That might tell you how great of a partner I am.

DSCN6075.JPG
Dart-Master-J at her finest.

DSCN6081.JPG
Mer and I fit in with the Sweds pretty well...maybe because we are Swedish. This is her and Hannah.

DSCN6083.JPG
A few reasons why I love Jess...
1) Awkward Noises
2) Great facials
3) Cuddling
4) Taking crazy pictures that integrate all the previously stated reasons.

DSCN6085.JPG
It's about time we're all together again! HOPE Interns reunite for a weekend of greatness. Man, I missed you girls. XOXO

PB160030.JPG
Mer got invited to go play bowling. I tagged along for an AWESOME Sunday.

PB160032.JPG
I finally got to meet Nina. She had a free pass to go bowling in Mall-Dova. Yes, the only Mall in Moldova, and that really is it's name. It was only her 4th time bowling so she thought I was really good. I didn't break 100 though.

PB160033.JPG
Scramble face went a little south

PB160034.JPG
Nina, me, Evelina

PB160035.JPG
PB160035.JPG 2071-11-16

PB160037.JPG
So you rent the lane per hour. We had it for one hour. It was the 10th frame, and I was the last to bowl. It shut off right before I got to bowl. I was a little upset. So Nina and I just bowled anyway even though they shut off power to the lane.

DSCN6089.JPG
Best friends

DSCN6094.JPG
DSCN6094.JPG 2009-11-14

DSCN6095.JPG
I was supposed to see Evelina at a Moldovan wedding before Sunday night...Mer and I might have overslept though. Everything is good now. I got to see her beautiful face!

DSCN6096.JPG
We had way too much fun.

PB160039.JPG
Mer thinks she won...but I'm pretty sure I would have beat her if I would've gotten to bowl the 10th frame. Right, Mer?? ;)

PB160043.JPG
I think this picture is funny because of our huge Moldovan purses.

PB160046.JPG
Mall-Dova was having their 1-year celebration. This included karaoke, "famous" singers, free wine, and even a few dancers that you will later be a little sicked-out by. P.S. I didn't actually sing Karaoke. Moldova couldn't handle that.

PB160060.JPG
We went down to the celebration on the 1st floor and there were these awesome...well, whatever they are. I told Mer that I needed a picture.

PB160061.JPG
How creepy is it that you can see his eyes?!?!?!? Weirds me out.

PB160069.JPG
Maybe this is why I feel fat in Moldova.

PB160070.JPG
Dancers in the MALL...a mall! Did you notice the huge wine barrels? I got a little confused. I thought I was in a mall, not a strip joint. Maybe it's because my town doesn't have a mall, but I didn't know these kinds of things happened while families were shopping.

DSCN6099.JPG
This lady is famous...something about Horrah and Moldova. She sang on Eurovision - kind of a big deal.

DSCN6103.JPG
I was trying to chase this girl around all night in the mall because I wanted to show everyone the crazy hats people wear here. I know people at home wouldn't believe me. She got away from me about 3 times before we ran into her again. Finally a success.

DSCN6125.JPG
So Nina and I yelled at this really great electric violinist to take a picture with us. Literally yelling "CUTE VIOLIN BOY TAKE A PICTURE WITH US" in English with a bunch of Moldovans around us. I think everyone thought we were crazy or had too much of the free wine. Neither of which was true. We finally got his attention and he wouldn't take a picture with us. We were pretty mad, but we did get one with the sax player.

DSCN6133.JPG
This is some famous Moldovan singer. I might have told him that we came all the way from the US to see his performance. Might of lied, but he took a picture with us after I said it. I think it all worked out.

DSCN6143.JPG
The Dancers exiting the stage. Did I mention there were little kids right up front watching??? It hurt my heart.

PB170617.JPG
Back at Invest Credit with the girls!

PB170619.JPG
That's about right, Jess.

PB170620.JPG
Mer being her moldovan self. :)

PB190623.JPG
Moldova goodness!

PB190624.JPG
"oh....thhhhat girl"

PB190625.JPG
Lunch break should always be like this.

PB190628.JPG
Everyone's a little obsessed with sour cream here...just thought I'd jump on the bandwagon.

PB190629.JPG
Aww, they're cute.

PB190630.JPG
I wanted to capture a good mashrutka moment.

PB190631.JPG
Jess and I went on a date...to China. Germany just wasn't good enough for us. Their tables were way too large.
Note: we ate Mexican food in China.

PB190634.JPG
You know you're in Moldova when....

Rumor on the street, is that this guy baptized the entire city of Kiev in the nearby river.

I had a day before Jess met me in Kiev and saw this bridge from an overlook. Right then I decided that I was going to walk across it, so I just started walking toward it. I had an awesome walk across and ended up taking a nap on the sandbar.

P9190039.JPG
I was looking for the Botanical Gardens and came across the park where all the guys meet to play chess.

One of my favorite parts of the trip was climbing St. Sophia's tower that over looked the monasteries...and I might have left my ticket to get into the church at the top. Leave it to me to leave something at the top of a huge tower.

I couldn't help it, they have grippie little feet and were pecking at me. You would do the same. Jess was freaked out the whole time considering she hates birds.

The average life expectancy of a male in the Ukraine is 62. It either has to do something with the mass amounts of vodka they consume or the mass amounts of pollution in the air. I'm hoping my life expectancy isn't depreciating while I'm here. Bah.

P9091207.JPG
The other day I decided to take a walk across the very large dam that goes across the Dnieper River. Little did I know that where I was walking definitely wasn't designed for pedestrians. Once I got to the point I couldn't go back, I realized the walking along the 1 foot wide space between the busy road and the dam itself wasn't the best decision I had ever made. The good news is that I made it across and walked on the right side on the way back. During this scary adventure, I took this picture. Obviously it was a really beautiful view.

P9091211.JPG
I have a deep love for public transportation now. On an average day I will take 3 van rides and 2 trolly bus rides (as seen in the pictures).

On my way back, I met a friend. Don't get too excited...it was a dog. A really dirty, lonely dog that thought I would feed him. He followed me quite a ways before he realized we weren't really friends at all. Poor thing. Thus, he was left on the side of the road. (Aleigh, if you're reading this you should come get him.)

The statue says "Lenin". To give you an idea of how big these statues of Soviet leaders are you should look at the child playing at the base. I mean really, why wouldn't you want you children playing at Lenin's feet?

While I was doing some accounting homework at the beach, I saw this cute little girl with her grandma. My favorite part of this picture is the grandma carrying her little shoes. It makes me smile.

Blue and green are the two colors most prevelent here. You can see them on most of the houses and usually the gates. I've been told they symbolize spiritual meanings of heaven and earth. (Thank you, wordless-book.)

I wish you could have seen me actually taking this picture. Let's just say that the base of that ladder is about 3 feet off the ground.

One might think this is in a village...that he would be wrong. This is definitely right outside an apartment complex.

Beer is obviously the "wiser" choice when you don't have much money to spend.

I was walking home and I heard someone in the window. I looked up and there is this small child trying to climb up these bars outside her window. I got out my camera as fast as I could and started taking all these pictures. Before too long, she started pointing at me and saying "mama". I quickly turned to run before her mom found out I was taking advantage of this photo opt.

This is after Katya and I played the cup-game in the middle of a Ukrainian pizza place. Everyone looked at us like we were crazy, because Ukrainians don't really do things like that in public. Not to mention my loud laughter is really out of place here. But we just kept laughing and that's why Katya is so cool!

P8210976.JPG
Here are some things worth pointing out:
1) The pillows behind the blue one are from the couch in the other room.
2) All the little stands are actually my kitchen "chairs".
3) I found this huge piece of glass in a closet so I put it in my room and taped pictures to it.
4) The outlets are different than Moldova. So I have one converter for European voltage and then another one so it fits in the hole. By the time I actually plug it in it's too heavy to actually stay plugged in. Bah!
5) Yes I have, what looks like, a "sweet" patio thing. In fact, it's really scary and I think that I'm gonna fall through the floor if I walk out there.
6) The Curtains. (Enough said)

I haven't decided if I can flush the toliet paper or not. I need to work on this small detail.

P8210981.JPG
The hole in my bathtub is my favorite part of the house. Or maybe it's the smell of mold when I turn on the water. Or manybe it's the "washing machine" that I have to empty into the tub. Okay, it's all pretty great...let's just be honest about it.

P8210982.JPG
The mirror is plastic.

P8211000.JPG
We put bubble wrap around the tub so that the pipes don't leak into the apartment downstairs. Aren't you a little jealous that I get to shower in that?

P8210984.JPG
I was told that the storage under the window can also double as a freezer in the winter. Either that's the collest storage ever...or I'm gonna freeze when it gets cold outside. Let me also show you my kitchen table and "chair" by the fridge. Yep, I eat there.

P8210985.JPG
Seriously, my curtains rock.

P8210986.JPG
You should have seen the first time I tried to heat the gas stove. I got scared and the match didn't even make it to the gas. I'm an expert now though.

P8210988.JPG
This is the offical Soviet room. I just leave it there and don't touch it. I finally opened the window yesterday because it smelled like no one had been in there since the fall of the USSR. Dad, this is totally your room when you come. I hope you like it!

This fortified wall, defining the limits of the city and serving as a protective barrier from invaders in the past centuries, dates back to 1037, the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The place was restored to its present condition in 1983, and it now serves as the Golden Gate historical museum.

St. Sophia's 13 beautiful golden domes nicely blend with the city skyline. The grandiose ensemble was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the XI century in commemoration of the victory over the Pecheneg tribe. The cathedral became a major cultural and political center of Kievan Rus and a site for receiving ambassadors from many countries. St. Sophia is famous for its outstanding mosaics and frescoes dating to the eleventh century.

Kiev Pecherska Lavra
The Dnipro Hills are dominated by the greatest monument of Kiev, the Pecherska Lavra, built almost nine centuries ago. A complex of churches, masterpieces of architecture by themselves, has been a holy place of worship for devout Christians. Famous for its catacombs with the saints' relics, Lavra is also called the Monastery of Caves. Museum collections of miniatures and church treasures amaze visitors from all over the world.

These women sit on the ground all day and string tobacco on rope and then hang them to dry. They make approximately 1,000 lei a month...which is about $100 a month. They work 10 hour days, 6 days a week, 4 weeks a month = 240 hours a month. $100 a month divided by 240 hours a month = $0.42 per hour. They are only seasonal workers, so they don't do this year-round, but something still doesn't seem right.

I've been told that the house I'm staying in is the only one in Moldova with a drier for laundry. It might be a little exaggerated, but I don't think it's too far off.

This is my boss' house. Him and his wife just built it. There's 4 apartments/rooms they rent out. I live in the basement. It's really beautiful and in a nice part of town. It takes me about 40 minutes to walk to work every morning. It's a great way to start the day, unless I'm really late.

Alcohol is a big deal here! It's also really cheap. There's a pretty big wine industry in Moldova. A lot of people in the villages make their own house wine. To say the least, it's kind of frowned upon that I don't drink.

Black Sea = goodness. The beach was awesome. The weather was perfect. It was pretty crowded though.

P6290434.JPG
One of my favorites! Yay, Mer.

P6290437.JPG
There's definitely a lady that walks around the beach and sells sweet corn from a bag. I kind of doubt that it tastes as good as Iowa summers, but this little girl seemed to love it.

In Moldova the only way girls take pictures are with really seductive looks on their face, no smiles, and a lot of skin showing. Mer and Jess have obviously been in Moldova for way too long.
Just kidding...don't worry they're not that culturally sensitive.

P6290476.JPG
I have a new love for dresses now. Thank you Eastern Europe for making me dress-up every day.

Out at a local restaurant called Seasons. Brenna was here for the internal audit and took all of us out - Me, Jessica (HOPE Intern), Brenna, Meredith (HOPE Intern), Ghena (Invest Credit's Executive Director), and Alina (his wonderful wife). It was a really fun night with a crazy ending. You can ask me about that later.

P6250349.JPG
I think this would be a good chance to inform you that anything that has to do with small children has these colors on it...and ONLY these colors. The shades don't even differ. Thank you communism for having a maximum of 5 colors to pick.

I made some friends at the abandoned amusement park. There were like 8 little puppies running around. We hung out for a while. They will soon grow up and terrorize the city of Chisinau. For now, I think they're pretty stinkin' cute. Don't worry, I washed my hands afterwards.

Orheiul Vechi, also known as "Old Orhei", stretches along river Raut, which flows into the river Nistru (Dniestr) near Dubăsari further to the east. The more you get to the east, the deeper the river valley becomes. Here, the Răut is cutting into a thick layer of soft limestone.

There's an old monastery/church in a cave near Chisinau. It's pretty sweet and obviously they take security pretty seriously.

P6140238.JPG
The remoteness and beauty of the Moldovan countryside makes it an ideal place for erecting a monastery. Orthodox monks found out about that in the 13th century and founded the Manastire in Pestera (Cave Monastery).

Traditional Moldovan drink...I forget it's name. It's basically boiled apples, pears, and other fruit. It needs more sugar if you ask me :).

This is Alina, the master of Moldovan crepes. SO GOOD! Really thin pancakes, then take the sweet and condensed milk and put if on the pancake, then roll. I'm learning to make them, because they rock my world.
