Western National Parks 2009

On August 24th we piled into our Yukon and headed west. We had pre-booked our stays at Badlands, Black Hills, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches and Rocky Mountain parks. We arrived home September 21st with some of planet Earth's greatest scenery inside our heads and on 1200 digital photos. We have chosen about 100 that are representative of the places, scenery and wildlife that we saw. We hope you enjoy them.

READ OUR TRAVEL ARTICLES

I have written a number of travel articles on the Budget Travel Magazine website. There articles were written as journals but with the intent of providing travel trips and suggestions to those who read them.

I will continue to write articles following significant trips so the list of articles will grow.

When you read an article, you can rate it. At the bottom of each article is a string of five gold stars and, of course, click on the FIFTH STAR...

The Budget Travel people will ask you to register prior to being able to rate the article by providing your e-mail address and a password. Membership is free and they don't inundate you with unwanted e-mail. I find both the Budget Travel magazine and website to be very valuable for travel suggestion and planning ideas.

This begins the section of photos taken in Seattle. We were there three days before embarking on the Alaskan Ferry.

Pikes Place Market 2

2008-07-17. The street that runs through the middle of the market. Some downtown buildings in the background.

Pike Place Fish Market
2008-07-17. Often featured on the Travel Channel (including the Anthony Bourdain show), this fish market is unique. A "hawker" in front of the kiosk is entertaining and draws a crowd. As fish orders are assembled, the employees THROW the fish to each other to be assembled for the order.

Pioneer Square
2008-07-17. Pioineer Square is the hub of the historic district of downtown Seattle. It is also the starting point for the Underground Seattle Tour.

Undeground Seattle 1
2008-07-17. This tour is educational and interesting without being "cute" or "touristy". The history of old Seattle is professionally told and the underground tour covers and area underground which was buried after a fire destroyed the town and the new town was built on top of the old.

Inside Passage 1

The Inside Passage Alaskan Ferry system runs from Bellingham, Washington north of Seattle, north through the fjords and waterways of th southeast Alaska panhandle. It is southeast Alaska's ONLY highway.

The M/V Columbis Ferry at Bellingham Dock
2008-07-18. The ferry system has a great fleet of boats. While not fancy cruise ships, they are quite comfortable, have cabins and comfortable amenities.

2008-07-18. Anyone not wanting to pay for a berth can camp out on either of two rear decks.
