First Grade Class Makes a Difference in Sudan

7 year-old Lucianna Jones didn’t think she was too young to help others. With a big heart and a mind to do something for the people of Sudan, she enlisted her teacher and classmates at Charles S. Bennett Elementary School to get involved in the cause of the Sudanese people by raising funds and donating supplies to Bridges to Sudan.

1st grade teacher Stan Harris heard of his student’s passion for helping Sudan and invited Chol Ajang to the class to talk about his long journey that began in Sudan and eventually brought him to America. At the end of his story, the students presented Chol with blankets to give to Sudanese in need. To cover shipping the blankets to Sudan, the kids held a car wash in Jacksonville. And it didn’t stop there – this passionate group of 1st graders also organized a toy and school supply drive to distribute as needs arise among Sudanese in Jacksonville.

The collected blankets were donated to Bridges of Sudan partner - Voices of the Martyrs – for their Blankets and Bible project. The Blankets and Bible project provides blankets for a night’s rest, shade by day or a way to carry an infant and a few possessions. The blanket also serves a powerful reminder that someone in America loved them enough to send a blanket—just for them. The blankets were shipped to Sudan in July along with cards from the Jacksonville volunteers.

Many thanks to Lucianna Jones, her mother Carolyn and the entire class at Charles S Bennett Elementary School for their compassion and action for the people of Sudan!
