Welcome

What's Happening? Let me tell you!

Good Bye CLC

CLC Kids and Families,

I have had a great time working here at Brownell Elementary as the Lead Teacher. Each one of your students is special to me because they were really my "first kids" to teach. I am moving on to substitute teach in Lincoln Public Schools... so, I might see your kids around!
Thanks so much for supporting me and the CLC through out the last year! I will miss you all.

P.S. I pumped your kids full of sugar today :)

Ann Powers

Changes

There are a lot of changes going on in the CLC programs. Stephanie Fanders, our previous director, has taken a job as the Northeast Family Center Finance Director. Our new Program Director is Teresa Matthews. Teresa has been a teacher for 17 years.
Ann Powers, the previous lead teacher is moving jobs to be a substitute teacher in the Lincoln Public Schools. Katie Konold is the new Lead Teacher. Katie comes to us from Belmont Elementary's CLC program where she has been working for the last 2 years.
Come in and meet our new staff members! And remember, everyone needs to enroll again for the Before and After School program for the 2010-11 school year.

Summertime

Our summer program has begun, and we are really having a lot of fun! Last week we played water games in the front lawn, and Friday we took a field trip to the Zoo. Heat and humidity aside, we had a fantastic time at the zoo feeding the animals, catching butterflies, and being entertained by the gibbons.

This week the older kids get to take a trip to Sheldon Art Gallery on UNL's beautify city campus, and the younger kids get to check out the Children's Museum.

Another really cool part about our program is that kids eat free every day. If you know any kids 4-18 who would want to join us for breakfast (8:30- 9:30) or lunch (11:30- 12:30) any day of the week for free, tell them to drop by, we'll be waiting for them.

Palindromes and Symmetry

Palindromes are a group of letters or number that are the same when put in reverse order. For example: Hannah, level, 6748476, 1991, Madam I'm Adam.
Symmetry is when one thing can be divided in two and the two parts are mirror images of each other. For example: the letters A, M, X and T.
This week we will be focusing on things in nature that are symmetrical as well as make some of our own symmetry.

Ocean

This week we will be focusing on the Ocean. As you might already know, we are pretty far from the nearest ocean: about 21 hours from the Atlantic Ocean and 24 hours from the Pacific Ocean. This makes studying the Ocean seem a little more difficult (but then we did study the solar system, which is a little further away). The goal this week is to become more familiar with the 5 oceans on our planet, learn some basics about the ocean, and study some of the animals and plants that live in it. If you have ever been to the ocean talk about your experience with your child, you could talk about what you heard, saw, smelled, felt, and even tasted (salty ocean water). If you haven't been to the ocean, this is the perfect chance to check out a book from the library and learn more about it with your student.

Spring Greens

Spring is a great time of year to watch things grow. This week we will be discussing and learning about things that grow in the ground and sometimes in the air: plants. A garden is a great opportunity to teach kids about how plants grow, as well as responsibility (all that weeding and tending). A garden can be as big or little as you like, you can plant flowers or food. Any way you do a garden, it's always something you can be proud of.

BUGGY!

It's been kinda buggy around CLC this week. In the morning and afternoon (with more success in the afternoon) we have been collecting bugs, spiders and worms. Although the emphasis this week is on insects, we let the worms and spiders in on the party, too. We are learning the different body parts of the insects and some major differences between insects and spiders. Quiz you student, find out what they know!

Foooooood!

Yum! Food! This week we are talking about food. What is it? Where does it come from? What parts of a plant do we eat? How can we describe it? What's the weirdest food you are willing to eat?
Fruits, veggies and sweets. I recommend them all!

Superhero

This first full week of April, we will be talking about superheroes. We will be talking/writing/creating the kind of superheroes you see in movies or comic books, but we will also be talking about the kind of superheroes you see making you dinner, fixing your car, making wise decisions and standing up for other people. Everyone should have a superhero, someone they look up to or strive to be like. Talk about superheroes with your kids, let them know who yours are and why and ask them to do the same... who knows, maybe you'll have some in common!

Spring Break

We are open this week from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm at Brownell. We will be playing, learning, exploring and just having fun. This week is a week for all educators and educated to take a little break, so we're going to take it easy and you should, too!

St. Patrick's Day

Spring Break is right around the corner, but we still have to get through this week. This is a busy week for us at the Community Learning Center. This is the LAST WEEK for session 3 clubs. Also, the Community Night is Wednesday night as well as Curriculum Night. We really encourage parents and all family members to come on Wednesday night and see what is going on in the school, and don't forget to wear green... little kids can pinch hard! Yikes!

Wether the weather will change

Ahh! Finally spring-like temperatures have come our way. Now, it is time to slip on your wellies and splash in spring puddles, and this week it looks like there will be a lot of them. Since our weather is changing from "freezing cold, snow on the ground" to "bust out the rain jackets and umbrellas", I thought it would be a good time to talk about weather with the kids. Our theme this week will touch on temperature, clouds, precipitation, and weather safety. Speaking of weather safety, talk with your kids about weather safety in your house. Do you have a plan for tornado warnings? Discuss it with your children and practice it, because you never know when bad weather will come our way.

Spring Break

Sign up for Spring Break care at Brownell is available right now. We will be providing care at Brownell Elementary not the Northeast Family Center. If you are interested in care for the week or even just a few days, just let the teachers know in the cafeteria and we can get you signed up.

Pluto is not a planet

This week is dedicated to the planets in our solar system. We will be researching and learning what we can about all the planets in the Milkyway Galaxy. And I know... Pluto is not a planet, but it still matters to me, and like the brontosaurus: we will never forget!

Dinosaur 1, Dinosaur 2

Everyone feels like they know a little about dinosaurs, right? Ask me to name some dinosaurs and here's what I'd tell ya: T-Rex (duh!), triceratops, stegosaurus, brontosaurus, velociraptor and that's about it. I feel pretty good about knowing the names of 5 dinosaurs. Well this week, not only am I learning more about dinosaurs, I learned that one of my wonderfully memorized dinosaurs is actually not a real dinosaur at all. All of you who have ever been taught that the brontosaurus roamed the earth millions of years ago, with a super long neck, a super long tail, munching on the tops of trees, were taught wrong, just like me. The brontosaurs is, in fact, two separate dinos that early paleontologist accidentally put together to make one dinosaur. WHAT??!! I better memorize anklyosaurus now so I can still have my 5 stand-bys.

Clubs

I have added extra pages for the News Reporter's Club and the K-Kids Club. Check them out right above the top pictures under the heading "more".

Good Manners

Good manners are good for students to learn. The sooner the better. This week I really go on the kids about returning my greeting when they walk through the cafeteria doors. No one likes to be ignored, and I also want the students to feel welcome everyday that they come to CLC.
For a couple of days this week we will be talking about good manners: what they look like, sound like, and feel like.
Manners aren't learned in a day, it takes lots of reinforcement. I will continue to reinforce not only positive student behavior, but kind and courteous student behavior. Ask your student about manners we are talking about at CLC. Ask them if they thanked the cafeteria ladies for preparing their breakfast or lunch.

Extended Days

Remember: for the first two weeks of February school will start at 8:45 and end at 3:59.

Before and after school program is adjusting accordingly.

Clubs will be held from 4:00 to 5:00.

MLK Day

Monday was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day so this week we will be talking about the good doctor. First, we are going to learn or refresh our memories about MLK, what he accomplished, and what he stands for in America today. I am encouraging you to talk with your student about how to treat other people; not just people who look different from them, but all people they come in contact with. One thing I like to reinforce at CLC when students are not getting along is: even if you're not friends, even if you don't like each other, you can still get along... you can be ok even when others are not.

Where are we?

Wednesday and Thursday of this week and next week will not be "normal" days for after school. If you are coming to pick up your child we will NOT be in the cafeteria. I will post a sign on the front door telling you where to find your child. The cafeteria is being used for teacher education so you are most likely to find us in the gym, media center, art room or music room. Look for the sign that will tell you where to find your child so you don't have to go wandering through the whole school. Thanks for being flexible with us!

Keeping Healthy

This week at CLC we have be learning and talking about keeping our bodies healthy. Monday we learned about the food pyramid and the foods we should be eating. Tuesday and Wednesday we learned about the heart, teeth and how to keep our brain healthy. We are going to finish off the week by learning how to stay active in small spaces and reviewing all that we have learned this week by playing Jeopardy! Remember, kids need more than 9 hours of sleep to stay healthy. Also, the greener the veggies, the better they are for you!

Happy New Year!

Welcome 2010! This is the time of year where we can stop to think about the past year: the good times, the bad times, and the lessons learned. Take time to talk with your student about the year past, and the new year ahead. Do you have plans for the new year? Goals? A resolution? I find the best way for me to keep a new year resolution or goal is to tell other people so they can help me stay on track. Yesterday, the 3-5th graders sat down to reflect on the year past set some goals for self, family, and community for the new year. A couple of goals I hear were: play less x-box, watch less TV, recycle, try not to argue as much, try not to play with my hair as much (I think this parent will appreciate this :) be a better friend and be more respectful. Wow! And they came up with them on their own... my goal was to quit biting my fingernails...again :l

Penguins and Polar Bears

Just to set the record straight the Coca Cola commercials featuring the penguin and polar bear sharing a soda could never be true. I'm not just saying that it might be near impossible to get a polar bear or penguin to palm a glass bottle full of sugary liquid, the fact is polar bears and penguins live on the opposite side of the world from each other. Hopefully, by the end of the week your student will be able to tell you that polar bears come from the north pole and penguins come from near the south pole. So the only way that commercial could be true for Coca Cola is if they filmed in a zoo... with a really realistic backdrop, of course ;)

Thanksgiving Break

Just a reminder that this week is not going to be a normal week. Tuesday is an early release and Wendesday through Friday there is NO SCHOOL or programming because of Turkey Day and of course, copious amounts of football and sleeping on a full belly ;) Happy Thanksgiving All!

Thanksgiving

Since next week is Thanksgiving and we are only in school for two days, I thought this week would be a good week to start talking about Thanksgiving. We are discussing what life was like for the "first Thanksgiving" and how the Pilgrims survived the first year in North America. Also, we are going to be talking about family traditions during Thanksgiving. I am encouraging you to talk with your student about your family traditions during this time: what does your family do for Thanksgiving. Mine, like many other families, the women cook and the men watch football and do the taste-testing :)

Clubs

Session 2 of clubs started this week. This session the clubs being offered are Readers Theater, Engineering Club, Star Students, Crafty You, Get Fit, and K Kids. Just a reminder:if your student's club meets on an early release day, there is NO CLUB that day.

Session 3 clubs will be available for registration before the holiday break. A list of clubs will be available in the near future.

Art

This week we are focusing on some art techniques. Three major one are pointillism, sculpture and mixed media art. We are taking pics of kids all this week to use for the mixed media day. They are going to use pictures as focal points on their page of mixed media (basically a free-for-all from the art cabinets). Hopefully your student will be bringing home some fantastic one-of-a-kind art home soon!

Fall Break

Fall break is already here! The first of the three major breaks we have in school this year. Just a reminder that if school is not in session for fall, winter, or spring break, we will be offering programming. Because not everyone needs the all day care during these breaks, we have not factored the cost of these weeks in with regular program fees, so there is a charge for signing your student up for the weeks off of school.
If you are lucky enough to have a day or two off with your child during the break, check out some of the favorite sites, or look at apples4theteacher.com for some fun and crafty ideas for the season!

Don't Get Sick...WASH YOUR HANDS

This is the time of year where most of us get sick. We are all cooped up inside around lots of people breathing the same air. The best defense you have against getting sick is WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!
If your child is feeling ill, please take their temperature and remember they are not allowed back at school until 24 hours after a fever breaks.
Stay healthy and don't forget to wash your hands all the time...especially before mealtimes!

POPcorn

This week is popcorn week...mmm, my favorite! Popcorn has been around for thousands of years, according to many websites I have been researching lately. Although popcorn has always been a favorite of most people, it was the Great Depression that really skyrocketed popcorn's popularity. Popcorn is a very cheap snack to make, and it is a great source of nutrition. For these reasons, one of the most popular snacks during the Great Depression was popcorn! Popcorn did take a considerable dip in popularity when movies could be watched at home instead of the movie theatre. But have no fear, popcorn lovers, that is why they invented popcorn poppers for home use! Eat some popcorn this week for a healthy snack... just lay off the salt and butter, it is good all on its own ;)

Fall Week

It was a good week to focus on fall. The weather changed and now we have to start wearing jackets in the morning...brrrr. This week was all about fall inside, too. We graphed different shapes and sizes of leaves, wrote acrostic poems about fall, and did one of the best things fall has to offer; eat apples. The week is not over yet, we still have more fallish plans ahead. My camera was being temperamental for a bit so I finally got the posters we made last Friday up... I'm pretty sure they were the key to our 55-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette! Go Huskers!

Husker Week...Go Big Red!!!

Aside from the past weekend's devastating loss, as a Husker fan, I have a lot to celebrate. First, my alma mater's overly-celebrated football team future is finally looking a little brighter than in past years. Coach Pelini has a lot riding on his shoulders as the Husker nation looks on toward a season of wins. Finally, our Blackshirts are living up to their name (mostly) and it all just makes me yearn for the 90s and have flash-backs of winning National Championships. Now set aside our current football team and focus on the long-standing history of the Nebraska Cornhusker's football team. As I try to ignore the fact that Pederson and Callahan are blemishes in our history book, I want to celebrate the FANS! This weekend will be Nebraska's 300th sold out game in Memorial Stadium and homecoming. We are dedicated fans.
If you ever get the chance (and maybe want to avoid the weekend football crowds) take a little trip over to Memorial Stadium to soak in some real Nebraska Football History. On the southeast corner of the stadium is a gate which you can pass through without a tour guide between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. Here you can give you and your student a self-guided tour through the stadium.
Or if you want the tour from someone who knows what they are talking about, go in the north entrance to set up your tour. The stadium is a really cool place to visit, even if you aren't lucky enough to see a game there... after all, I just saw my first live game last season.

GO BIG RED!!!

5 Senses

This week at CLC we are focusing on our 5 senses. Each one of our senses is very unique. Without one, our whole world would be different.
Talk to your student about which sense they would choose to lose if they HAD to. How would your life be different and why did you choose that sense to lose.
I hope that never happens, but it is a fun conversation piece!
