Why Be a Member of Troop 179?

The Founding of Troop 179.

 - The founding leaders of Troop 179, having originated through Pack 1179, recognize that Robert Baden Powell designed the Patrol Method for use in developing the capabilities and character of young men, and that this is the best way for a scout troop to operate.  The best way to learn the Baden Powell method is for adults to attend Wood Badge, and for boy leaders to attend NYLT.  There is no substitute for this training.  Making-it-up-as-you-go is not acceptable.  Get trained!

 - Scouting is a family event, and with each scout joining the troop, an adult should enroll to actively support the troop.

Troop 179 will focus on adult leader training.

-  Every scout deserves fully trained adult leaders.

-  Just like scouts joining the troop, adults need to learn where they fit in to the troop.  BSA provides high quality learning opportunities to become a capable leader.

Troop 179 will focus on boy leader training.

-  Every scout deserves well trained boy leaders.

-  We conduct YLT (Youth Leadership Training) twice per year to orient each new group of boy leaders, elected for 6 months terms of service.

-  As many as 1 scout per 10 each year will be selected to attend NYLT.

-  The SPL will be NYLT trained, exceptions only by permission of the SM.

-  The PLC (Patrol Leadership Council) should meet more than monthly.  There should be a monthly planning meeting, as well as short PLC meetings before and after troop meetings.  On each campout, there will be a PLC meeting to finalize details about the program plan for the weekend.

-  Patrols shall be held to the standards of the National Honor Patrol award.  Patrol Leaders will be encouraged to know the requirements and to see to it that their patrol succeeds.

Troop 179 will provide a varied outdoor program.

-  The outdoor program is a key part of the troop program, and we plan approx. 8 weekend campouts, most likely utilizing Texas state parks, and 2 weeklong summer and winter camps.  Scouts wishing to advance, and to earn leadership credit must attend 3 of 4 of the weekend campouts offered each 6 month period.  We offer a minimum of 20 days and nights of camping each year.

Troop 179 will provide advancement opportunities to scouts.

-  It is a goal of Troop 179 to offer to each boy joining the troop from Cub Scouts the opportunity, given good attendence, to attain the rank of First Class within one year. This is done through a First Class Emphasis calendar assuring that the troop conducts the needed activities that will enable a boy to achieve First Class.  An active Boy Scout can reach First Class rank in 12 months and should reach First Class within 18 to 20 months.

-  We recognize that we are trying to foster independence and self reliance in the boys, and to shuffle them through First Class Emphasis without their needing to take responsibility for their own advancement is not desirable.  Progress towards First Class is expected to be self paced, and the scout is expected to take the initiative to meet with a Scoutmaster for some of his requirements.

Troop 179 provides leadership to the District.

 - We participate in District events, including WDYB and WTSE, and encourage adults in the troop to provide leadership at the district level.

Troop 179 proactively pursues community service.

… to do my duty to God and my Country …

 - We seek out through community contacts, parks where we camp, and our charter organization, opportunities to perform community service.  This may, but not exclusively, take the form of  Eagle service projects.  Other projects will be troop or patrol service projects.

Troop 179 provides a cost effective program.

 - Quality programs take money, and time from volunteers.

 - We strive for a quality program while offering opportunity for scouts to defray or even completely cover their costs through fund raising.  Popcorn sales, Scout Fair coupon sales, and other fund raising events will be managed by the committee.

Coleto Creek GBRA Park Campout Oct 14-16

Troop 179 had an awesome campout at Coleto Creek GBRA Park in October.

(There is no extra charge for the Awesomeness!)

We had fishing, hiking, kayaking, and canoeing activies.  The Scoutmaster made sure to soak all of the boaters during our water battle.

For the first time since Pedernales Falls we were able to have a fire at our Campfire program, and we retired a US Flag.

Many, many thanks to Mr. D, who really raised the campout preparations bar on this one by arriving early at the park to mark our sites, arranging for 8 kayaks and 4 canoes, bringing fishing equipment, teaching the Scouts to fish, and piloting a motor boat during our boating activity.  Way to go!

WTSE (District Webelos to Scout Exposition) at Brosig in September

Troop 179 put on a fantastic recruiting event and had a fun campout as well at Camp Brosig.

With no flames of any kind allowed, the Scouts planned no-cook menus - but the eating was STILL GOOD!

The Scouts built a 4 foot pioneering platform complete with waterballoon launcher (which was dubbed The Beast by the boys).

We experimented with a solar oven - even though the clouds did not cooperate we still had hot quesedillas.

Troop 179 provided the leadership for the WTSE event raising and lowering the camp's flag on Saturday and Sunday, and conducting the Interfaith Worship Service on Sunday morning.

This also was the first campout where we used our Patrol Bulletin Board tripods for the posting of duty rosters.  You'll see these at every campout from now on.

Orienteering and Geocaching at Bastrop State Park April 29-May 1 2011

April 29 - May 1, Troop 179 camped at Bastrop State Park.  Activities included Orienteering and Geocaching hikes (see the attached map).  Orienteering hike was as much as 5 miles for some, as we tracked back and forth through the forest looking for Orienteering controls.

19 Scouts from Troop 179 Attend Bear Creek Summer Camp

Since 1957, Bear Creek Scout Reservation has been a summer home to thousands of Scouts.  Providing unforgettable camping memories, Bear Creek has afforded many boys their first opportunity to experience self reliance in a beautiful natural setting in the Texas Hill Country.

Four Historical Merit Badges can be Earned in 2010

Make plans in 2010 to earn these special Merit Badges - offered ONLY in 2010!HistoricalMBs

Historical merit badges help Boy Scouts celebrate Scouting’s past

UPDATE (3:15 p.m. Jan. 13): Bill Evans, Youth Development team leader with the BSA, tells Cracker Barrel that these merit badges will count as electives for rank advancement. As if you needed another reason to get your guys to earn these.

A merit badge called Computers would sound just a crazy to a 1910 Boy Scout as a merit badge called Tracking sounds to Scouts today. That’s because the BSA’s list of available merit badges has evolved through the years as the interests of boys have changed.

In honor of the BSA’s 100th Anniversary, though, today’s generation of Scouts will get the unique opportunity to experience some of the activities their predecessors enjoyed. That’s possible thanks to the BSA’s new Historical Merit Badge Program, a set of four discontinued merit badges that today’s Scouts can earn.

Boys can earn any or all of these merit badges:

Signaling
  • First offered in 1910 and discontinued in 1992.
  • Sample requirements: build a simple buzzer or blinker capable of sending Morse code messages, and send a message of at least 35 words; send and receive messages using semaphore flags at a rate of at least 30 letters per minute.
Tracking
  • First offered in 1911 (as Stalker merit badge) and discontinued in 1952.
  • Sample requirements: recognize the tracks of 10 different animals; give evidence to show you have tracked at least two different kinds of birds or animals, documenting their speed and direction.
Pathfinding
  • First offered in 1911 and discontinued in 1952.
  • Sample requirements: be able to guide people to important places within a three-mile radius of your home; submit a scale map of your community.
Carpentry
  • First offered in 1911 and discontinued in 1952.
  • Sample requirements: demonstrate the use of tools, such as a miter and bevel; build a simple piece of furniture for use at home.

Sounds like a blast, right? But there’s one catch: Boys must start and finish all requirements within the year 2010. So if your guys built furniture for their patrol kitchen at last year’s summer camp, they can’t use that product for the Carpentry merit badge. And don’t delay—after Dec. 31, 2010, these merit badges will go back on the “retired” list.

If this is a program you want to bring to your troop, the BSA suggests you track down merit badge counselors soon. For Carpentry, contact a local cabinet-making business. A nearby Homeland Security office could help you with Pathfinding. Signaling would benefit from the help of a local amateur ham radio group. And for Tracking, try your state’s department of natural resources. Those are merely suggestions. Be creative!

For more information, look for a special Web site and a printed guide by the end of the month. That’s where you’ll find the complete requirements for each patch. The BSA also plans to deliver a guide that will help councils and districts host a historical camporee or similar event to offer these merit badges.

The Historical Merit Badge Program gives you the perfect chance to organize exciting activities for your Scouts, while connecting them with the BSA’s rich past. It’s another example of the BSA’s devotion to Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey.

Dec 7 First Class Olympics

Rain did not deter the first Troop 179 First Class Olympics!

We had 5 fast paced patrol competitions taking up the entire 1.5 hour meeting.

Chariot Race, Compass Course (indoor), Human knot, Knot Die relay, and Plant and Animal identification.

Consider being a Den Chief

One way to share your knowledge and enthusiasm of scouting with others is to serve as a Den Chief for a Cub Scout Den, such as a Wolf or Bear Den.

Den Chief also fullfills your Position of Responsibility requirement for Star or Life scout rank.

Talk to your Scoutmaster if you think you'd like to do this.  We will help find a Den that can use your help.

How do I learn to be a Den Chief, to make sure I'm a good one?  I'm glad you asked!

To be a Den Chief, you attend the Den Chief Conference at the University of Scouting, held each year in February.  This year the date of UofS is Feb 13, 2010.

Gift Ideas for your Scout

Christmas (or birthday) is a great opportunity to equip your scout with the gear he needs.

The regular uniform (required at most troop events) is scout shirt with current patches, pants, belt, neckerchief, and slide.  The troop will be providing the neckerchief and slide (soon), so if you get pants (and they come with the belt), you will be fine there.

I can think of a few other items which are recommended, and for some campouts will be mandatory, so would make good gifts.

When my sons crossed over to Boy Scouts, I presented each of them with their own starter gear set:  Mess kit, backpack, sleeping bag (stuff sack type), sleeping pad (stuff sack type), a camp stool (much smaller than the big folding chairs), and 50 feet of nylon rope (1/8").  Hiking boots would also be good to add to this list.

Mess kit.  Get a metal set - aluminum or stainless is OK.  They last forever, and can be used to cook (a First Class requirement).  I have seen them in mesh bags, which are useful to keep the parts from getting lost, and can be used to hang out to dry.

Waterbottle.  They used to call these "canteens".  These are MANDATORY for Texas camping.  Get about 32oz size, and attach a carabineer clip.

Backpack:  Don't overspend on the first one.  Your scout may need a small now, but in 4 years he'll need a full sized pack.  For now it is a very good idea to get him used to the idea of packing everything he needs for a weekend into one pack that is easily carried.  I have typically found packs in the $75 range on sale that are great starter packs for scouts.  Most of our camping trips will not require a backpack, but some will.  So you can take some time, look for specials, etc.  Check REI, Academy, and watch for specials.

Hiking Boots:  Boys feet change so fast that it may be difficult to keep them in hiking boots.  However, when we go on a backpacking trip, sturdy hiking shoes will be a required item.  They are always a good idea on a campout, and a really good idea for summer camp.  Look for inexpensive models at Academy or Gander Mountain while their feet are growing.  Get the kind that cover and support the ankle.

Sleeping bag.  These range in price.  I recommend a stuff-sack type mummy bag, and it should stuff small enough to go inside the pack (because of rain).  For my sons I purchased 32 degree rated down bags.  They are very light and stuff into a bag about the size of a loaf of bread.  For half of the year in Houston we don't even bring a sleeping bag camping, rather bring a twin-bed sheet.  But for winter camping, they must have a warm sleeping bag, and the mummy type is recommended.  I augment the 32 degree down bag with a synthetic liner, and with that we have been comfortable at 25 degrees in Colorado, and 35 degrees in Houston (which feels a lot colder than it sounds due to humidity).  In mild temperatures, I use the down bag like a comforter.  Very comfy!

Sleeping pad.  These also range in price, but I like the self inflating models which roll into a stuff bag and can go inside the backpack.  However a simple foam pad that rolls up tied to the outside of a backpack or duffle is fine.

For summercamp and wintercamp, you'll need a footlocker.  (These are not used for personal gear on weekend campouts, although they do work well as a patrol gear dry box).  The one to get is the Trunk Locker (http://www.walmart.com/Contico-Storage-Locker/ip/2476189).

Lastly, a word about pocket knives.  They are OK, and I have presented to each of my sons a monogrammed Swiss Army knife, with a carabineer clip.  They were told to put it aside until they earned a Tot'in Chip, and even then to not bring it to meetings - only campouts.  I've been told that scouts lose their knives.  You need to evaluate your scout.  Mine have not lost theirs (yet), and I have tried to make their knife special enough (same as what my grandfather gave to me), so that they will want to care for it.  Don't go crazy about knives.  The "camper" or "tinker" model Swiss army knife, or the BSA pocket knife is all they should have.

Merry Christmas!

Monday Nov 23

We worked on knots at Patrol time.  Everyone got a new Knot Card.  We had a knot competition using the Knot Die!  SPL and ASPL taught First Aid Scenarios.

For a patrol that has every member present, on-time, and in-uniform, there is a prize.

The prize is as yet unclaimed . . .

Mr. R.

YLT (Youth Leadership Training) successful on Sat Nov 21.

We had our YLT on Saturday.
This also was our first meeting at Saint Aidan's.  We were in Classroom 1.

Scouts completed training for the following leadership positions:
SPL,
PL - Phoenix,
PL - Gorilla,
APL - Gorilla,
ASPL,
ASPL,
Troop Guide

YLT training is required when a scout wishes to apply his Leadership Position to a rank advancement.

Scoutmaster presented instruction on Leadership, and SPL led team building activities.  We had more pizza than we could eat, and a number of fun yet instructive team building games.  It rained, but it was a good training day.

History of the Goliad Presidio La Bahia

From Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goliad,_Texas

In 1829, the name of the village of La Bahía was changed to Goliad, believed to be an anagram of Hidalgo (omitting the silent initial "H"), in honor of the patriot priest Miguel Hidalgo, the father of Mexico's independencia.

On October 9, 1835, in the early days of the Texas Revolution, a group of Texians attacked the presidio in the Battle of Goliad. After a thirty-minute skirmish, the Mexican garrison surrendered, leaving the Texians in control of the fort. The first declaration of independence of the Republic of Texas was signed here on December 20, 1835. Texians held the area until March 1836, when the Texian garrison under Colonel James Fannin was defeated at the nearby Battle of Coleto. The Texian survivors were imprisoned at the presidio until Palm Sunday, March 27, 1836, when they were executed in the Goliad Massacre.

Goliad was the birthplace of the famous Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza, commander against the French Army in the battle of Cinco de mayo on May 5, 1862.
