Latest news

Xander is Six Weeks Old/Amber Speaks!

Wow.  I've spent the past six weeks giving a lot of thought to what I would like to share with my friends and family about post-Xander life, but could never seem to get my fingers on the keyboard for more than five minutes for a quick e-mail check.  Over the past six weeks, I have actually gotten to sit more than I have in YEARS.....to breastfeed.  New babies do that A LOT!!!!  I think I can say that at six weeks, we finally seem to have it down.  Xander is gaining weight, becoming more efficient, my supply is established, and I think I've even experienced some of that joy that was rumored to come with breastfeeding.  I'm relieved and even proud....There were many moments of exhaustion and frustration that made me want to grab the nearest bottle and can of formula!  Whew, enough on that.

Around Valentines Day, I thought a lot about how I have fallen madly, deeply in love with another B-O-Y!  To be honest, I was never quite sure about this having a boy business while I was pregnant.  It seemed logical and exciting for us to have a boy, but it was so far from my comprehension and life experience.  I have always been such a girlie girl, was ecstatic to find out I was having triplet girls, and have just thought nothing could be sweeter than a baby girl.  Well, I was just clueless.  Xander has captured my heart in way I could have never imagined.  He is the sweetest, most precious gift all wrapped in blue.  Now that I know him, I find myself so much more excited about the little boy adventures he will take me on!  And I sure have a lot to learn.

I also think a lot about having this "singleton" (one baby) experience.  Okay....I thought this was going to be different and, guess what, IT IS *SO* DIFFERENT!  With three babies, I was like a CEO of babies.  I organized, I charted, I bathed 1-2-3, I fed 1-2-3, I diapered 1-2-3, NEXT!, and so on.  And as I did all of that, I think I did the best I could possibly do to nurture, cuddle, and appreciate my sweet babies.  But, wow, I think I'm realizing even more now, five years later, that that was DANG HARD!  I think I was just so deeply grateful to have healthy, beautiful babies because of my very long journey to bring them into the world, that I didn't fully realize the magnitude of the "situation".  Ignorance probably helped me through it though.  And it probably goes without saying now that I am thankful to be able to gaze at, cuddle with, nurse, and even be awake in the night with ONE baby and no one else waiting in the wings for their turn.  And I'll admit to feeling some guilt and sadness for Aleah, Bella, and Clara because, if I missed out, then they certainly did too.  But then I remind myself that they were given a gift of sisterhood and connection that Xander will probably never know.  Just this week Aleah asked me a question that amazed me and broke my heart at the same time.  She wanted to know if since she and sissies were born together, would they die together some day too?  I cannot even type that without tears.  But it was clear to me that at five years old, she found comfort in thinking about death imagining that she would have her "sissies" bundled up tight with her just like on the day they were born.  Isn't that wonderfully amazing and insightful?

And now that I've made my life sound all rosey and wonderous, let me share a few of my struggles...just to keep it real. :o)  Let's start with my house.  I used to love to decorate and have a neat house.  I've fought and fought for the past five years to stay on top of things, and lately I've started to admit defeat.  Do you see my white flag?  It's there.  If you can't see it, just show up at my house.  You would never know it was all picked up TEN WHOLE MINUTES AGO, that the toothpaste wasn't splattered all over the mirror yesterday, and that, no, we really aren't trying to feed and invite ants into our home with our kitchen floor!  This makes me c-razy!!!  Crazier than anything.  Laundry--Infants come with a slew of laundry, and I already had 2 slews before Xander was born.  Child noise--Who ever called it the pitter-patter of little feet?  Our house is freakin' LOUD and chaotic, and David and I both have regular headaches we strangely didn't have five years ago.  Seriously, our kids hear about headaches more than they should!  Sigh.  I won't even go into matters of money, fitness, or fashion!  Thank God for my husband who loves us all anyway, cooks, and was so proud to invent his own "super broom"!  And that we laugh more than ever....between tears and some yelling. ;o)

Well, you're forgiven if you skipped to the photos long ago.  Who knows when I'll take the time to do this again.  XO!  ~Amber

Happy Birthday!

Five years ago today, we were loving on our three brand new babies and getting used to our rapid family expansion.  Today, we celebrate their first five years on this earth.

Happy Birthday Aleah!
Happy Birthday Bella!
Happy Birthday Clara!

The girls enjoyed a small "Jumping Party".  They and the six little girls from their class had a lot of fun jumping, playing, and being princesses.  Pictures included. :o)

Home

We've been home since Friday. It was very nice to be home from the hospital.  Xander seems to fit in pretty well with the chaotic rhythm (yes, that's an oxymoron) of our household. The girls love to hold him and help with anything they can. Amber and I aren't getting a ton of sleep, but it's a very different experience than we had with the girls. We are doing things with Xander, like going out in public, that we didn't do with the girls for months. That feels nice.

Xander's been losing weight - more than our doctor likes - so we've been having to go in for weight checks every day this week. Amber's breastfeeding so this is especially frustrating for her.  Hopefully tomorrow he'll have gained an ounce or two.

We celebrated two things on Tuesday: the inauguration of President Obama and the first week of Xander's life.  Both made me proud.

Xander is a precious, beautiful, treasured addition to our household -- as babies typically do, he has a way of putting things in the right perspective for those of us who are blessed to be a part of his life.

Not so fast, Mister!

So we were all ready to head home after Xander's "circ" this morning when the pediatrician tells us he has to stay another night. As Bella would say, "Darn it!"

One of his blood tests came back positive for a certain type of bacteria, but his white cell count is normal and he shows no signs of illness. The pediatrician believes it's a contaminant that somehow found it way into his blood sample, so they want to redo the tests to rule out an infection and keep him another night for observation. We're disappointed, and I know the girls are going to be very disappointed. But, better to be safe than sorry.

Xander has a great night - he slept from 10:30 - 3:00, fed, then went back to sleep around 3:45 until they carted him off for his circumcision.

Introducing Alexander David Burns

Alexander David Burns was born January 13, 2009 at 5:29pm.
He is 8 lbs 6 oz and 21 inches long.

We call him Xander.  You should too.  (it's pronounced 'Zander')

Mom and Xander are resting well tonight.

January 13th is the day!

Amber's water broke at 12:30 am this morning. Once my mom made it over to stay with the girls, we loaded our stuff and drove to the hospital. We checked in around 1:00 and hung out in triage (not comfortable at all) until 5:00 when they moved us to a proper room. Amber's been progressing throughout the day and we are anticipating an early evening baby.  More updates later.

Baby Drama!

Who knew the night I wrote the previous entry about "preparing for baby", we would find ourselves rushing to the hospital!  At about 3am I woke up thinking my water had broken, only to discover I was actually having significant bleeding.  This is never a good sign during late pregnancy and is pretty unusual.  So, in a state of panic, we rushed to Providence L&D.  First and most importantly, they found a strong fetal heartbeat and I was able to calm my panic a bit.  There was still talk and question as to why the bleeding and whether or not I would be sent in for an emergency c-section.  Since the baby and I had stable vitals, my doctor decided to admit me to a room next to the O.R. and observe things for 24 hours.  Thankfully, all remained stable and the baby seemed unphased by all that had occurred.  During what ended up to be about a 36 hour stay, the bleeding also subsided and doc decided to send me home on bedrest to see if we could buy a few days or more before delivery (I was about 36 weeks with 37-40 weeks being considered full-term).  Her best guess is that I had a small placenta tear that healed over during my time there.

Soooooo, now I have time for things like writing on blogs and my days of cleaning, organizing, being a busy mom and preparing for baby have quickly come to a halt.  I don't have to stay in bed, but have to stay off of my feet except for meals and showers, and that is so much harder than it sounds!  Just like when I was pregnant with the girls.  Wasn't this supposed to be my easy and drama-free singleton pregnancy?!?!  Oh well, continued health is all that really matters.

In addition to prayers for continued health, I would appreciate prayers and thoughts for David as he is carrying a very heavy load here.  Thankfully he is on vacation, although there is nothing "vacation-like" about this for him.  Of course, he is A-MA-ZING and handling it all so well.  And David's parents are being most wonderful and helpful as well, helping with the girls and handling other chores such as laundry.

In the midst of this, we did manage to have a very Merry Christmas, enjoying Santa with the girls and a fun homebound Christmas Eve and Christmas Day playing with new toys, watching Christmas TV, and having family and some friends come to us for visits.

And, as for now, we're sleeping with one eye open and one hand on the car keys and telephone!  FYI, we will try to update more during the days and events ahead.  And, of course, we will post soon after baby boy's, hopefully, not-so-dramatic arrival!

Preparing For The Arrival!

We've been very busy in preparing for the arrival of our little guy recently.  We've been cleaning out closets and crevices, looking to take better advantage of the space in our house that is feeling smaller by the day.  I forgot just how much gear and supplies come with a baby!  Couple that with dollhouses, bikes, scooters, train sets, etc. for three other kids, and we're nearing maximum capacity here.  We've moved the girls into one bedroom with a set of bunk beds, one twin size bed, and two chests, which they are enjoying....a little too much at times.  We also made them a small girlie playroom with their toys, books, and a little tv/dvd player so we can occasionally enjoy the news or sports (well, David) while they watch Cinderella.  Baby boy will have his own room, and will hopefully find it a haven free of all things girls!  David will probably join him there from time to time. :o)

We've had two small and wonderful baby boy showers.  One was for family, given by my sweet mother-in-law and sister-in-law, Judy and Darci.  The other was given by my two precious girlfriends, Kathy and Rachel, for a little group of friends.  We enjoyed them both immensely and feel so loved and supported!

And, now, I have a tentative c-section scheduled for January 15!!!!!  Oh my goodness.  It is almost here.  How is it we know time will fly, and then we still act shocked and amazed when it actually does?!  My hope is still to go into labor on my own and not require surgery, but I am happy to have an "end date" just in case.  At any rate or method of arrival, he's coming soon!  And I'm finally feeling prepared enough (prepared as I'll ever be for this!) and so ready to meet him....whatever his name will be! ;o)

Our Unhappy Thanksgiving

Actually, it was a wonderful day with delicious food, beautiful weather, kids having a blast with cousins, adults kicked back visiting, very nice, UNTIL about 5 pm when our Happy Thanksgiving turned into one of our most terrifying days ever. We ended up rushing Bella to the ER...followed by emergency surgery...followed by a night in the hospital. She just about broke her little arm in half above the elbow. That's what it looked like when I went to her in the yard and that's pretty much the non-medical way of describing what really did happen. And, no, it wasn't due to any of the not-so-unusual monkey bar climbing, sliding upside down on the big slide, jumping out of swings....no trampolines or falling from beds. She was running in the grass across the yard with a ball. Three adults were within 10 feet of her as she fell and tried to catch her weight in apparently the strangest angle possible, hyper-extending it and snapping the bone. I saw it happen and heard her cry and thought....she's fine...hop up. Then I saw David's face--and knew. Then I saw her arm and REALLY KNEW. We whisked her to the ER, they paged a most wonderful orthopedic surgeon who reviewed her x-rays and said...she needs surgery and now (because the shifted bone was and would be putting increased pressure on all of her vessels and nerves).

Thankfully, Dr. Ellis reported he was very pleased with the outcome and expects her arm to recover fully with time. She has three pins in the bone and a cast from her hand to just under her shoulder. I can't even describe our fears and anguish throughout the ordeal. You think you're prepared for these moments as a parent. But I can see reasons to be thankful--for the hands that took good care of her on a holiday, that she is healing well, that we had a house full of family we could leave the other two with and have no concerns about, and that she still has her sweet, determined Bella spirit. As she was going into surgery, I told her I sure wish it could be me and not her (I would have done anything to switch places with my baby in that moment!)....To which she said, "But mommy, if you had a broken arm I would be so sad for you." It's true we all have so much to learn from children!

The Burns Name

I'm the last man in the Burns family line. I have one sister, and she took her husband's name when she married. My dad has two sisters, and they did the same thing. So unless one of my three daughters makes the choice to keep the Burns name for her kids, the Burns family name ended with me.

Until today.

I'm very proud to announce that our son will have the sole honor of carrying on the Burns Family name.  I'm not sure why that's such a big deal to me, but it is.  So I'm happy and proud...and nervous.

Bella and Clara are pretty easy going about the whole thing, but Aleah is insistent on a girl. We'll break the news to her later today; maybe we'll get it on video and put it up here.

Everyone we've told so far has warned us about one thing -- getting peed on. Boys do that, evidently, when they are babies. They all pee in your face.  Well, I got news for you, Burns Boy...I'm not gonna let that happen. I've got 6 months to strategize and assemble the tools needed to avoid face urine. I will be victorious. I love you very much already, and I know you wouldn't be doing it on purpose, but I'll be durned if I'm just going to be that kid who ambles up to the water fountain that someone has stuck a piece of gum in so it shoots out in a jet and gets blasted in the face.  It's not gonna happen. Just letting you know.

First Day of School!

Today was the first day of school for Aleah, Bella, and Clara.  They are in "junior kindergarten" three days a week at Live Oak Classical School ( www.liveoakclassical.com ) .  We are all very excited about the school and all the fun and learning the girls will experience this year!  I will admit this morning was an adjustment for our family, having to set alarms, pack lunches and backpacks, eat breakfast, get everyone dressed in uniforms, hair fixed with bows and in the car by 7:45.  We did not make it in time, but tomorrow is a new day!  David says we cannot play the "we have triplets card" when it comes to school....Why not?!?!

Of course, we did have to make time for photos on this special day.  You can see those under "Recent Photos".  Don't our babies look so grown-up?!  Sniffle, sniffle.

One programming note:  Stay tuned on Thursday to find out the gender of Burns Baby #4!!!
