This building is so huge, that all of Disneyland would fit into it.

In this building they test the fuel tanks  by filling the  tanks and pressurized them them they emptied most of the fuel and then took the planes for a  test drive.

The dream lifter carries the fuselage of the new 787.  All the parts of the 787 are built in another location and brought for the assembly to this plant by the dream lifter.

Guard house
The guard house built in 1857 is the oldest building on the island It was the first line of defense against enemy landing parties, and orginally could oly be reached by drawbridge over a moat.Soldiers at the fort entered trhough the guardhouse, through a heavy ironstudded wooden door. By 1862 it was used to hold Confederate Sympathizers and US Army prisioners. The top two stories were added later to the building and were built by prisioners. This is why the brick looks different on the top two stories.

D block

Although these cells were a little bigger they were used for treatment, isolation, and seperation.  Prsioners here would very often not leave their cells at all for long periods of time. 

It is believed some of the more famous prisoners may have spent time here to seperate them from the general population.

At the end of this cell block are the  dark isolation cells that could be in total darkness.  Prsioners  could spend a day or longer but never more than 19 days in one of the cells dubbed "the hole"

Special holding cells were a bit larger, but the men didnt get to leave them.

George "machine Gun" Kelly (Kidnapping) 1934- 1951

Arthur "Doc" Barker (Conspiracy to Kidnap) Transferred form Leavenworth 1935- 1939 when he tried to escape  with some other prisoners from Cellblock D by sawing through window bars and scrambling to the waters edge, and was fatally shot by the guards.  The other prsioners were captured and returned.

The key hung high above the cells kept it safe form the prisioners and the guards didnt have the key on them when they walked the halls.

These were prime cells. th sun shone in the windows onto the cells.
Men in these cells sometimes could hear the people in Sanfrancisco partying, like on New Yrs eve. The noises taunted them. The free world was so close and yet so far.

The island is alive with history… three thousand years ago it served as a fishing and hunting site for Coastal Miwok Indians. It was later a haven for Spanish Explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala, a cattle ranch, and a U.S. Army post starting with the Civil War.

From 1910 to 1940, the island processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants, the majority from China. During World War II, Japanese, and German POWs were held on the island, which was also used as a jumping-off point for American soldiers returning from the Pacific. In the ’50s and ’60s, the island was home to a Nike missle site.

Huge Exotic plants on Angel Island

Before the influence of human residence and use, the flora and fauna of Angel Island were very similar to those of nearby mainland areas in Marin County.

a wide variety of introduced plants were brought to the island by military personnel and others during the last century.

Oak, bay, and madrone trees, sagebrush, chamise, manzanita, toyon, elderberry, and coyote brush are native to the island. Eucalyptus, Monterey pine, Douglas fir, Monterey cypress, black locust, Australian tea trees, Portuguese cork oaks, and other trees and shrubs were planted on the island by the military.

The island is also notable for the animals that are not found there. For example, there are no squirrels, rabbits, foxes, skunks, opossums, or coyotes.

Oranges around the castle

There are fruit trees all around the castle in the gardens.  When Heast lived there, he tried to have the gardens and land supply a lot of the needs of the people there as it was a long ways to ship in anything.  So trees of all kinds and gardens also.  He also had a huge ranch which the family still owns today.

The zoo grows all its own eucalyptus trees for the Koalas. They bring them branches and add to the "tree" perches they have. Koalas drink very little as they get all the hydration they need from the trees..sometimes called "gum trees"

The koala's five fingers include two opposable thumbs, providing better gripping ability. The first two fingers are positioned in apposition on the front paws, and the first three fingers for the hind paws. The koala is one of the few mammals (other than primates) that has fingerprints. Koala fingerprints are similar to human fingerprints; even with an electron microscope, it can be quite difficult to distinguish between the two.

The new bridge overpass being built

Later this year this bridge will open and traffic will no longer cross over the dam but cross teh bridge.  This will be safer for the the bridge as there is security issues since 9-11.  Traffic will also flow quicker as the line up to the bridge is very long even in the morning when we went but was miles long when we left.  The bridge is am amazing feat...and huge.  One  of the vertical beams holding it up is as long as two football fields.

The seat the men sat on when working on the canyon

Men hung up to 900 feet above the canyon on these littel swings, wearing baseball hats dipped in tar or metal hard hats, their own boots and clothes, for hours at a time.  Men worked 7 days a week with 2 days off a year.  It was during the depression and many were wating for a job if you didnt show up one day.  So broke toe, the flu or a death in the family, you were at work.
