This Halloween Calvin wore a different costume almost every day. We were lucky enough to have a bag of Halloween costumes to choose from - Cal was a frog for school, a crocodile for the My Gym Halloween party, and then Thomas the Train for trick-or-treating.  Halloween was lots of fun with my friend Dina visiting from southern California.  We also had our local friends Brandie, Scott, and Kristine over along with Papa Harry/Grandma Helene and Grandpa Bob.  Papa Harry wore a reflective orange vest to keep us all safe while trick or treating (oh boy!). 

Calvin was making us all laugh a lot during trick-or-treating with his various conversations with homeowners after receiving his treats.  That kid is not shy and will strike up a conversation with just about anyone.  Max stayed home to pass out candy with Grandma Helene - he was pooped after a fun day of "dress up and take pictures" with his buddy Elliot.

We're doing great and Max was kind enough to sleep from 8:30pm - 3:30am last night (that is 7 hours!!) in celebration of Daylight savings time.  He is now 6 weeks old.

It has been an exciting week.  It was our turn at preschool to bring the snacks this week, which means that Calvin got to sit in the "special chair" during circle time and bring something for show and tell.  He brought a puzzle/car toy that Aunt Harriet got for him and it was a big hit with the other boys.  Grandma Helene was so clever to bring all kinds of foods that start with "P" (P is the letter of the week at school), so she brought peas, potato chips, plum and peach jam, and potato bread (see photos of my mom in the blue "Working parent" apron at school"!)

As part of Calvin's "special week" at school, he gets to take a big Clifford dog around with him for the weekend.  We are supposed to take pictures of Calvin and Clifford out and about.  So you'll see Clifford going to the dentist with Calvin.  I am SO PROUD of Calvin - he had an awesome dentist visit, complete with a cleaning and X-Rays for the first time.  He was so cooperative and in a great mood the whole time.  And, of course, this was a big outing for Clifford that we will share with Cal's preschool tomorrow.

Aunt Harriet is in town and we are enjoying her visit - she hit it off with Max right from the start!  We'll be seeing a lot more of Aunt Harriet during her visit.

We also had a play date with Liam and Braxton yesterday- what fun the four boys had together.  Cal and Liam love to just run around together and the dads were nice enough to take the older boys to the park for part of the time to get their energy out.  It was pretty hilarious trying to get the four of them to sit still for a photo together.

Max is still doing great.  He continues to roll over every day and show off his mad skills.  He had a great night's sleep last night and I am so thankful.  We took him out to dinner for the first time tonight and he was such a joy - not a peep out of him.

On Wednesday (10/7/09), Max surprised me by rolling over from his tummy to his back.  He has continued to show off his new trick every day since then, so I guess he is no longer safe to leave unattended up on the bed! 

Calvin's preschool class took a field trip to Apple Hill on 10/6.  I went along with Grandma Helene, and of course Max came too.  Max was probably the youngest kid to ever go on a field trip, but whatever - he did fine.  We enjoyed the hay ride, the "how we make apple juice" tour, feeding the fish, and of course the yummy apples.  We are still enjoying the apples that I brought home from Apple Hill last week.

Max has been sleeping pretty well - he gives me a good 5 hour stretch between feedings each night.  Max has fully outgrown the newborn clothes and is solidly filling the 3 month clothes.   I am amazed at how long and sturdy he seems for being only 3 weeks old!

The 9/30/09 album has pictures of Calvin at 2 weeks old mixed in with pictures of Max from his second week.  Check out the similarities/differences.  The pictures are labeled with who's who.  Note how pronounced little Calvin's eyebrows are compared to Max :)

Two weeks already!  We took Max in for his 2 week check up and he is doing great.  He put on 2 lbs since his 2-day appt. and the doctor said he is healthy and strong enough to let him sleep as long as he wants during the night.  So last night he had a great 5 hour stretch between feedings!   He weighed in at 9 lbs 14 oz (82 percentile) and 22 1/2 inches (96 percentile). 

Calvin continues to be very interested in all that Max does.  I think we are seeing a bit of the impact now - today Calvin laid down on the baby activity mat and pretended to be a baby, and he also made some incomprehensible babble that I believe was his attempt at "baby talk".  So far, he has been really gentle with Max and my only complaint is that Calvin is constantly in the baby's face, trying to touch or kiss him.  :)

We finally made our way over to see baby Elliot - our friends Scott and Kristine had Elliot on 9/5/09.  Because of my cold and cough I stayed away for the last 4 weeks, but we finally had our first play date with Max and Elliot yesterday.  The babies were hilarious looking at one another, grunting, sneezing, and punching in the air together.  They are two weeks apart and little Elliot has the most gorgeous head of red hair!  (thanks to Grandma Helene and Papa Harry for watching Cal for a few hours so we could have the opportunity to hang out with just the babies and friends)

Brad returns to work tomorrow after a GREAT two weeks home with the kids.  It is still weird to say kids, plural.  Anyhow, I am a bit nervous about being on my own with two kids, but I am super glad my mom is lined up to help this week.  We have a field trip for Calvin's preschool class on Tuesday to Apple Hill - my mom and I will go and take Max along too.  Wish us luck! :)

The transition has been pretty easy.  We were lucky to have Brad's mom stay with us for a few days and make all of our food (thanks!!) and we also had lots of help from Grandma Helene, Papa Harry, and Grandpa Bob.  Calvin has been enjoying preschool so Mon-Thurs. mornings he is busy at school, giving us a little break. 

I've posted pictures of Calvin's first school field trip to Safetyville, a local "mini-town" that teaches kids about safety.  He practiced fire safety (stop, drop, and roll), how to yell for help when there is a stranger, and how to use the crosswalk in the street.  The kids then got to ride their tricycles around the little town, practicing their safe skills.  Calvin did not want to leave despite sweating profusely in the 100 degree heat with his bike helmet on!  He really enjoyed the trip - Brad, Grandma Cheri and Papa Harry went with him. 

Max is SUCH AN EASY BABY.  Can't say it enough.  Not sure how much has to do with this being the second time around, but boy is he easy to manage.  So easy, in fact, that we went on a long trip yesterday to see my friend Owen get married.  Yup, we took Max 3 hours away to Sonoma for a wedding last night.  We were SO lucky to have my dad chauffer us (I was afraid that some sleep deprivation would kick in and we wouldn't be safe to drive ourselves home).  Max didn't make a peep and at 8 days old he is super portable.  The wedding was beautiful and I am so glad we got to go witness my good friend Owen's wedding.

Calvin is doing very well as a big brother.  Calvin is very interested in all that Max does.  He constantly wants to kiss him on the head or touch his hair.  We are giving him lots of positive attention for being gentle with the baby.  He understands that baby cries when he's tired, hungry, or cold (although Max cries only like once a day, so this has been pretty easy on Calvin).

Max is giving us 4 and 5 hour stretches of sleep at night.  This is just amazing for one week old.  Maybe starting out at almost 9 lbs makes him a heartier eater and sleeper??  As is typical for babies, Max lost some weight and weighed in at 7 lbs, 13 oz at his 2 day doctor visit.  We go back for a 2-week check up on October 2.

Brad has one more week off from work.  He has been a huge help keeping Calvin busy (can you say Rock Band and Sunday football?)  My mom has been a big help too, keeping Calvin occupied at home all day yesterday while the rest of us traveled to Owen's wedding. 

On 9/17/09 at 11:15 pm, I had a big contraction that woke me up.  Thought I might have slightly broken my water, so we called the advice nurse.  They advised us to come in.  I had been having contractions about 10 min. apart for several hours, but I thought they would go away (as they had a few days before).  So we called my parents to come and stay with Calvin (who was fast asleep) so we could take off to the hospital.  By the time they arrived, my contractions were still 10 min. apart but much more painful. 

 

We took off and got to the hospital at 1:05 am on 9/18/09.  The contractions were still 10 min. apart but more intense.  The charge nurse got me hooked up to a monitor and they said the doctor would come in 20 minutes.  About 30 min. later I was in a lot of pain and the doctor came in to take a look.  My mom and Brad's dad were at the hospital in the waiting room at this point, and Papa Harry was home with Calvin.  Brad's mom Cheri was packing up and driving up to meet us. 

 

The first doctor said that my water had indeed ruptured and that they would admit me.  I was 4 cm dialated at that point.  I started to ask about an epidural right away.  This was the plan!!  I really wanted some pain medication and I had my epidural at 4 cm when I had Calvin.  The doctor said they would need to admit me, get my IV set up, and then order the epidural.  He put the orders into the computer and they wheeled me to the labor room.  At this point I could not walk and the contractions were every 5 minutes. 

The nurse was getting the IV stuff ready and I was assertively asking for the epidural.  Brad was also a super advocate, trying to hurry things along.  There was a lot of pain.  She told us we would need to get the IV in place and then send a blood sample to the lab to make sure my platlet count was good before the epidural.  She said this process would take about 30  minutes.  The idea of spending another 30 minutes without pain control was unreal to me. She tried to put the IV in my right arm but "blew a vein" near my bone.  This caused a huge bump on my forearm.  Meanwhile, I'm having contractions 3 minutes apart that are super intense.  Then she tries for an IV in my left arm and I start having a contraction mid-insert.  This one also did not work.

By this time I'm telling the nurse that I feel the urge to push.  She tells me not to.  I'm thinking this is a bad sign and I still have no IV.  Nurse says we will skip the IV and she needs to examine me.  Sure enough, I'm ready to push and there will be no pain medication.  The nurse calls for help and a super nurse/midwife comes in and tells me we will be having this baby in a matter of minutes, and I will be having a natural childbirth.  This was NOT the plan!  I tell her my birth plan is in the car and they all laugh.  Sure enough the delivery happens very quickly.  There was a lot of screaming and yelling and it was all very intense.  But I will say that it was great to be able to get up and move around right afterwards, which you can't do when you are strapped to bed with an IV and an epidural. 

So Max was born at 3:08 am on 9/18/09.  He was 8 lbs, 12 oz and 20 3/4 inches long.  He has dark hair and he had really long fingernails at birth.  He cries very little and eats like a champ. Brad stayed with us in the hospital overnight, and Calvin spend the night with Grandma Helene and Papa Harry.  All is well and we came home today 9/19/09 around 1 pm.  Max has a touch of jaundice they will be re-checking on Monday.  Other than that, I guess that's our story :) 

We are waiting for baby Max to make his appearance.  I started maternity leave on Tuesday 9/1/09.  In the last 4 days Calvin and I have done a lot of fun stuff.  We have been exploring all of the playgrounds in Folsom, making notes about cool features to go back and visit in the future.  It has been really great spending lots of one on one time with our fabulous three year old - before we turn our worlds upside down with the addition of a newborn!  Unfortunately I've developed a cold and so the coughing and sore throat is pretty annoying.  All in all, life is good.  :)  I had a doctor appointment yesterday and doc says I'm getting close - she thinks I could go into labor fairly soon.  Never any guarantees, though!  Since I had to be induced with Calvin I'm wondering what "going into labor" actually feels like.  My doctor tells me I'll know.  I'm counting on that! 

There are a couple of pictures I've posted of Calvin wrapping up a gift for his brother.  Funny - my mom found a stuffed animal cat that matches the one Calvin has carried around for 3 years.  We told Calvin the new one was for his baby brother.  Calvin thought the new cat was way nicer than his cat and much softer.  So he proclaimed that his old cat was for Max, and the new cat was for him.  He wrapped up the "old" cat with wrapping paper and left it in the crib for Max.  Which was fine, until last night when he was going to bed and decided he could not fall asleep without his "old" cat.  We had to unwrap the old cat and tuck Calvin into bed with both cats.  Oh well!  Calvin wrapped another gift for Max which is an art project he made for him, so at least we have one thing left :)

We have had such a fun July so far.  You'll see pictures of the Stanowicz baby shower - they are good friends of ours and their baby is due the SAME day as ours!  (Sept. 14)  We have settled on a baby name - Maxwell Davis.  Calvin, who is constantly rhyming everything, thinks his baby brother will be called Baxwell Bavis.  He thinks he's pretty funny!

 

We just took a trip July 19-21 to Sonoma, CA to Traintown, USA.  A mini theme park with ride on train, rides, and petting zoo.  We drove down with my parents (Papa Harry had to be at Traintown with us!)  On the drive down we stopped in Calistoga at the Petrified Forest.  This was a cool stop with a forest turned to stone by the minerals from volcanic ash 3 million years ago.  We then checked into our hotel and enjoyed the pool together.

The next day we went to Traintown (second in line, waiting for the gates to open).  Cal LOVED riding on the train through the tunnels, over the bridges to the mini-town and petting zoo.  He rode the roller coaster with Brad - no fear.  After returning to the hotel for a 3 hour nap, Brad and I took off to an evening alone (Papa Harry and Grandma Helene entertained Calvin in the hotel for the evening).  I took Brad for dinner and a surprise show called "Comics Stripped" - featuring 2 comics who did their comedy act and then sat down for an interview with the host.  It was SUPER funny and Brad got called up on stage for part of the show, hilarious.

The final day of the trip we had pancakes and IHOP and then went to Stafford Lake disc golf course (another surprise for Brad).  It was pretty steep moutain terrain, and I'll have to say my mom and Calvin were real troopers.  Not to mention pregnant Jen - I did pretty well, too!  The funny part was we were out in the wild near a lake and we tried to convince Cal it was OK to pee in the woods but he would NOT do it - he cried and would not go.  Brad hadn't been disc golfing since April due to a minor shoulder injury so I think he enjoyed the course. 

Calvin had a nice nap all the way home which was quite a relief because the ride there was full of his rhyming narrative - ("Have you ever seen a goose kissing a moose?"  ha ha ha ha ha ha)  Of course the whole ride was enjoyable because we were in our newly acquired 2000 Sienna van instead of our customary small family sedan. 7 weeks to go until the arrival of baby Max.  Stay posted for news and pictures!

Fun times in the past few weeks.  We had family visitors (Cousin Amy, husband Dave, and baby Eilee, Aunt Regina and Uncle Mike) at the beginning of the month.  It was great to have a baby in the house not just because Eilee is super cute, but it also got Calvin used to the idea of a baby sleeping in his old crib.  Baby brother is due in only a few short months and we wanted to see how Calvin did.  Besides a few, "Why is the baby crying?  Why is she still crying?" he was generally pretty accepting.  We went to the zoo, rode the train, ate ice cream at Fentons, visited the pool, visited Red Hawk casino and enjoyed a lot of my mom's cooking. 

Just last weekend we hung out with Calvin's friend Liam to celebrate his 4th birthday.  We went to the Sacramento zoo with Jasen, Rhonda, Liam, baby Braxton, Scott and Kristine.  Calvin and Liam always enjoy chasing each other around and they had a fun time. 

This weekend we went to the Sacramento Jazz festival with Grandpa Bob and Grandma Madie.  Cal did really well considering all of the sitting involved.  He enjoyed the washboard concert (a huge group of 15+ washboard players on stage) and the Zydeco band.  We also got to see Grandpa Bob's saxaphone teacher play with his band.  Calvin pretended to play all of the instruments along with the band (he makes a pretty realistic saxaphone player face).  We topped the evening off with a good round of Canasta with Bob and Madie. 

Calvin can finally reach the pedals of his tricycle so he is trying to do more of that.  He asks often to use his popper toy to "mow the lawn" in the front, too.  Calvin would be happy spending all of his time outside.  3rd birthday is fast approaching, and it is amazing to me that he starts preschool in September. 

 

Brad and I were lucky enough to get away for the weekend to celebrate our wedding anniversary (which was March 30).  Grandma Helene and Papa Harry were nice enough to take Calvin for the weekend so we could enjoy some alone time.  We are fast approaching the mid-point of my pregnancy and "alone time" opportunities are running out!  Brad and I went to Lake Tahoe which is the off-season for tourists now - the very end of ski season but not yet warm enough for beach season.  We found plenty to do.  We did a hike down to Vikingsholm and then up to Eagle Falls.  There were a lot of stairs and steps to get up to the falls, but it was worth it.  With the snow melting the waterfalls were gorgeous.  The hike down to the beach was fine, but the hike back up to the car (climbing up 500 ft. elevation change) was a bit treacherous.  I'm going to blame being pregnant rather than the truth which is I'm out of shape :)

We stayed at a hotel on Lake Tahoe that had private beach access and we can see ourselves coming back here in the summer with Calvin to enjoy the beach.  Brad and I did plenty of gambling at the casinos (Montbleu, Harrahs/Harveys, Horizon).  Our favorite was the $10 Pai Gow Poker table at Montbleu. 

We took a gondola ride up the steep moutain side up to the base of the ski resort.  We didn't come here to ski, and this weekend was the final weekend of the season for the Heavenly resort.  The ride was worth it - the views from the top of the mountain were amazing.  It was neat to walk around on the snow but feel totally comfortable because the weather was so nice (probably high 50s at the top of the mountain, totally sunny). 

Calvin had a great time with Grandma Helene and Papa Harry and we are ever so grateful for the relaxing weekend.  I slept in for two days straight (meaning I slept in until 8 am Woo Hoo!) and felt great!

 

We had a fun Easter weekend.  On Saturday we took Calvin on his first ever light rail train ride (he calls it the "electric train" to make sure we don't confuse it with a steam train).  We have the light rail station right by our house so he's seen a lot of the light rail.  We took it to the end of the line Historic Folsom (2 stops) and then we walked up a steep hill to a playground.  Calvin enjoyed the ride and the operator invited Calvin and Papa Harry to peek inside the operator cabin (whatever you call it, where all the buttons and levers are).  So all in all we had fun.  Grandma Cheri and Kathy came in to town that night and decorated Easter eggs with Calvin.  Cal helped me decorate a bunny shaped cake which he thoroughly enjoyed eating later that evening.  Easter was a hoot.  He knew just what to do in the morning "mommy I'm awake it's Easter time, lets GO!"  We all tumbled out of bed at 6 am to watch him find his plastic eggs.  Calvin then covertly took his winnings into his room (why is he being so quiet??) and was eating the fruit snacks that were hidden in the eggs.  He's been singing "Here comes Peter Cottontail" pretty regularly these days :)

We've had some ups and downs the last few weeks.  The down:  We all got sick.  Icky runny noses and stuffy faces sick.  Now we're all better so that's good.  The Up:  I'm officially 4 months pregnant and our first trimester screening test went great.  Calvin will be a big brother sometime around September 14th and I'm feeling great.  We moved Calvin into a big boy twin bed last week and the transition was really smooth.  He hasn't had any trouble saying goodbye to the toddler bed, switching bedrooms, or staying up on the taller bed (hasn't rolled out once!)  We have seen a new behavior crop up recently - hiding.  Calvin just about gave me a heart attack about 2 weeks ago when he hid one morning before work.  Brad, my mom, and I all searched every nook and cranny in the house and couldn't find him anywhere.  Brad and I started looking outside.  Turns out he was hiding in our bedroom closet (even though we had looked there 4 times, he was just behind a pile of clothes that I pushed aside when I looked).  We're hoping to nip that so it doesn't continue.  You'll see in the photos that we went to see Grandpa Bob play in a jazz concert at American River College (where he is a student) - Calvin loved the performance!  He shouted "Good job Grandpa Bob" in between songs and that was pretty cute. 

Brad, Calvin, and I went down to the Bay Area to watch AJ and Nate perform in their school performance of Wizard of Oz.  Nate had a speaking part and he did great!  Calvin stayed home with Grandma Cheri and ran around her backyard for three hours while we were at the play.  He was nice and tired by the time we got back.  We disassembled Brad's childhood twin bed and brought it back up here to Folsom - new big boy bed for Calvin!  We need to get a new mattress before officially moving him over to the new bed and he can't wait.  On Sunday morning we had breakfast with Pam, Chang, Emma, and baby Sophie.  Calvin had fun chasing Emma around the yard and exploring her staircase.  It was a nice, warm day and so the drive back was quite nice. 

In preparation for Calvin's first appearance in a wedding last weekend, we went and got him a haircut and a suit.  The haircut was really cute - until Calvin decided he didn't like his hair spiked in the front and insisted we lay it flat.  Oh well!  We've posted some photos from the wedding last Sat. - a former co-worker of mine married her long time partner of 21 years in a beautiful evening ceremony.  Calvin did a great job at his task (we "played wedding" at home to prepare for weeks in advance).  He was less enthusiastic about sitting still for the cermony after his part was done, but I guess for a 2 1/2 year old that's about what to expect.  He ran around for hours - hopped up on sparkling apple cider and wedding cake.  That's what we call a fun night.

On Sunday we went to a Taiko Dan Japanese drumming concert with Calvin - he LOVES music, and he really enjoyed this.  It was a first attempt at "theater" event with Calvin.  He did great for almost 2 hours of sitting and then we had to leave because he got too wiggly.  One of my employees is in the drumming group and it was AWESOME to watch.  Calvin was bobbing his head, tapping his feet, and playing the air drum during the whole first half of the performance.  His beat-keeping antics remind me a lot of Brad......

At the moment, Brad and Calvin are playing the football game on the XBox.  Translation - Brad is playing and he gives Calvin a spare controller so Calvin thinks he's playing, too.  It works for now but probably not for much longer!! 

We spent time in the Bay Area last weekend to celebrate Brad's mom's birthday.  Brad and I took off Friday from work and went with Calvin to his soccer class.  He really loves being out on the field and follows the Coach's directions really well.  He's pretty tiny still but he tries to do everything!  We got Stan's donuts (local favorite in Santa Clara) on Saturday morning and Calvin picked out the one decked out in Valentine's Day sprinkles.  We spent the rainy day indoors at the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose.  Calvin had lots of fun and he got soaking wet in the water exhibit.  On Sunday we visited friends Dave and Veronica and their cute kids Noah and Ella- Veronica made a fabulous breakfast and Calvin got to see the Wii Mario Kart game in action.  We drove to to friends Mike and Elena's house next and Calvin continued a super fun day with little Rachel and Aly.  Calvin was following them around, pushing strollers and baby dolls like a pro.  He cried when it was time to say goodbye!  The drive home last night was long because of the rain, but we had a great time.  Back to work tomorrow....

Brad and I dropped Calvin off at Grandma Helene and Papa Harry's last night so we could go to our friend Brandie's birthday party.  It was fun to be around adults all night - and we stayed out until 1 am!  Calvin and the grandparents had a slumber party and we got to sleep in this morning back at home.  Our friend Dina was in town for the party and it is always great to spend time with friends.  Happy Birthday Brandie - we had a fun time going out and getting to experience some night life (it's been awhile!) :)

I also added a couple of photos of Brad and his brother Matt in racing gear - there is a local indoor racing track here in Sacramento and so they went to race go carts.  They came back pretty pumped so I'm guessing it was a really fun time.  They look goofy in their outfits so be sure to check out the pics. 

I've posted some pictures of Uncle Matt's recent visit - we celebrated a belated birthday for Matt and Cal enjoyed blowing out the candle with him.  There are some shots of Cal's My Gym class - he really looks forward to it each week and he pretends he's the teacher when he's at home, instructing his stuffed animals on what they need to do.  Calvin took a bunch of shoe boxes this morning and made a train, filled with animal passengers.  That was pretty creative!  He continues to play band at every opportunity.  Check out Cal on the washboard and his kitty on the jug.  The stuffed cat, it turns out, is quite a compliant band member.

We spent December 27th with Brad's mom's side of the family playing poker and eating pizza.  That was lots of relaxing fun!  Then on December 28th Calvin got his Christmas present from Grandma Helene an Papa Harry - an Imaginarium train set/table that is pretty incredible.  He loves trains!

After all of this excitement, I went to bed at 10 pm on New Years Eve.  There is only so much partying I can do around here.  :)

Cute story of the day:  Brad was finishing his dinner tonight and Calvin wanted to play.  Calvin asked if Brad could get down and play with him.  Brad told Calvin, "I'll come play with you, but first I have to put away my dinner."  Then Brad does a little routine we do with Calvin, where we tell him a secret which is always "I Love you" whispered in Calvin's ear.   Usually Calvin responds by telling us a "secret" in return, which is "I Love You, Too".  Tonight Brad asked if Calvin wanted to tell him a secret back, and Calvin leaned in to tell Brad, "Don't foget to put away your dinner!"  We all got a good chuckle out of that one.

Ho Ho Ho.  Santa Claus was good to us again this year.  We spent Christmas Eve at Bob and Madie's with Christa, Greg, Nate, Andrew, and Becca.  As usual, Calvin followed Becca around and they were stuck together like glue.  When she dressed him up in the pretty princess jewelery, he was happy to participate.  Calvin was reluctant to open gifts - he tried to give his gifts away. Once the toys were open, however, he was very happy to play with them.

For Christmas morning, Calvin woke up about 7 am.  He was still a bit worn out from the night before, and a little overwhelmed by the whole Christmas experience.  He was very happy to see that Santa and his reindeer ate the cookies, carrot stick, and milk that we left out the night before.  With so many presents to look at, Calvin was again a bit uncertain about the process.  Grandma Cheri was a true Santa Claus - helping to fill the living room with toys for all of us!  (Calvin still has most of the presents she brought left to open...we'll get them done by the end of the weekend!)  We helped him open a few things that he really enjoyed - the highlights of his morning were the Sesame Street drum set, the Thomas the train set, and a set of 3 jugs that my mom brought over. 

A childhood favorite of mine was the movie "Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas" - my parents brought over the collecter's edition DVD which includes a sing-along section.  Papa Harry, Brad, and Calvin all sat on the couch with their matching jugs (the alcohol content had previously been removed!) and played jug band along with the DVD.  That was adorable.  We enjoyed Cheri's favorite cinnamon pull aparts, scrambled eggs, and cantelope for breakfast.  After Calvin and I had a nice nap, we headed over to Papa Harry and Grandma Helene's house for Christmas lasagna.  Bob, Madie, Christa, Nate, and Becca joined us there.  Calvin and Becca chased each other around and we still aren't certain what they were laughing so hard about! 

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.  We will be "Christmas-ing" some more tomorrow with Uncle Tom, Aunt Linda, Scott, and Joe.  It is nice to spread the family fun over several days! 

The Christmas tree has been in place since the day after Thanksgiving.  The stockings have been in use, and our 2 year old resident has watched "Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas" on DVD about 15 times so far this month.  This was a favorite of mine as a kid and now it is pretty cool to see my own kid singing along to the dorky old songs.  We've also celebrated my mom's birthday (which was Dec. 11th) and Calvin caught on quick that we couldn't eat the chocolate cake until Grandma Helene came over....so he was begging for Grandma Helene for the whole day. 

 

Last weekend we drove down to the Bay Area and stayed with Grandma Cheri.  She and Kathy took us around to the sites of San Jose at Christmastime - Christmas in the Park, the Fantasy of Lights (we took the night train through the park), and some local homes that have amazing decorations.  Of course, it was about 40 degrees and us cool California kids have limited cold weather clothes.  But we all survived and Cal loved seeing the sights.  He is still talking about taking the night train under the full moon and riding past the Fantasy of Lights.

 

We started a tradition that the "elves" bring Calvin a gift every morning in December and he also gets to open one day on the advent calendar box that Grandma Cheri bought for him.  This gets him so excited in the mornings!

We had an awesome Thanksgiving this year at our house.  Bob, Madie, Tom, Linda, Scott, Joe, Harry, Helene, and Cheri (the chef) joined us.  The turkey was a bit of a fiasco, but it all worked out in the end.  Cheri's orange jello and Aunt Linda's yummy apple pie were fabulous.  Cal enjoyed running around and playing legos with everyone.  He wouldn't go to bed when he heard we were all playing poker, so he ended up with his own nickel ante for a rousing game of two to the left, one to the right, hang a U-turn at the post and call it a night - or whatever those crazy games were called.  We had a fun time!

So Brad took me on my (belated) birthday surprise trip - we switch off every other year to surprise each other with a trip somewhere.  This year was my turn to be surprised and we ended up in San Francisco.  After dropping Calvin off with Grandma Cheri, we ventured into the city on Saturday morning and I couldn't imagine that Brad was really taking me to SF.  He hates driving in SF :)

 

We drove along Fisherman's Wharf and ended up all the way at the end, at a company that does Segway tours of San Francisco.  Check out the photos!  Boy was this fun, and strange.  The little machines are very intuitive and react with each slight weight shift on your feet.  When you lean on your toes, the Segway races forward.  When you lean back on your heels (down those steep SF hills), the machine slows down.  It goes over rough bumps and crevices no problem.  The weather was gorgeous and we enjoyed our adventure on the Segway.

 

Brad took me to visit my friend Owen and his fiancee Caroline's new house in San Francisco, where we oohed and ahhed over their beautiful new digs.  Then we went out to lunch with them at a place called the Beach Chalet overlooking the ocean. 

 

Brad then drives us to Downtown SF and we pull up in front of some fancy pants hotel where the valet guy takes our car.  That's right, probably the first Toyota Corolla he's had to valet park in awhile :)  The hotel was GORGEOUS and right in the heart of downtown.  We walked everywhere from the hotel, everything was within a 2 block radius of where we were staying.  It was very pampering (complete with his/hers leopard print bathrobes in the closet) to stay here - sleeping in for 2 mornings was FABULOUS.  Although my "mommy clock" has me so screwed up that sleeping in until 8:30 am felt like I was sleeping all day.

 

That evening we strolled around to look at the shops that were decorated for the holidays.  We went ice skating at Union Square.  We weren't very good at it but it was fun. 

 

We spent the whole day Sunday shopping.  All day, and we didn't even finish all of the stores in the main shopping center.  Our feet hurt so much we had to buy new shoes.  I think we each ended up buying 3 new pairs of shoes on this trip.  Found some great deals for us and some great Christmas presents for family too.  Again, what a treat to slowly shop around with no time crunch.  (Thanks again Grandma Cheri and Kathy for watching Cal!!) That night we ate dinner on the 7th floor of Macy's - check out the pictures of the ice skating rink/Christmas tree that we took from the 7th floor. 

 

Monday morning we went to get breakfast and then ended up at another shoe store. Not sure why we were so drawn to shoes this trip :)  Then we took off from our hotel (that was sad, bye hotel) and went to Golden Gate park.  We walked through the rose garden, past the de Young museum, and went to the CA Academy of Sciences.  Our master plan was to avoid the weekend crowds.  Didn't quite work out that way; it was sort of annoying how many people were there.  After some clever maneuvers we ended up with passes to the Planetarium show, which was quite good.  The rest of it was nice too - check out the scuba diver aquarium pics.  The funny hill pictures are the museum's "living roof" concept. 

 

Calvin had a really fun time with Grandma Cheri and Kathy, we had a really relaxing time too.  Luckily I've got a 23 pound turkey defrosting in the fridge and a napping baby right now.  Life is good!

Calvin went to see Santa on Friday night - this went SO much better than last year.  Last year he screamed and cried.  This year he gets the concept that some guy in a red suit named Santa will come down the chimney and bring Calvin a present.  He is very excited about this.  So Cal's gym had a Santa photo op last Friday.  Calvin and I practiced the night before and Cal decided he would ask for a map.  I think it is because Aunt Harriet recently got Calvin a neat map puzzle of the U.S., and he plays with it a lot. So anyways, Cal wants a map.  I think in the moment he ended up asking for a train, but whatever.  He did great, he smiled and enjoyed himself immensely.  I am expecting to get the pictures back next week, and I will post those if I can. 

 

Brad is taking me on my birthday surprise trip (yeah, a little late) at the end of this week and I have no idea what he's cooked up.  Can't wait to have some rest and relaxation.  Then we get back in time to get Thanksgiving dinner prepared and the house cleaned. I miss Olga, the lady who cleaned our house for a few months at the beginning of 2008.  She was great.  This was a gift from Brad and my friend Dina, and when the gift expired I was very sad.  If I get to sit on Santa's lap this year, I will ask for Olga to come back.... :)

 

Brad is at a King's game now and I think I made the right decision to stay home with Calvin.  I'm not sure I'm ready to take Cal to a big sporting event quite yet.  It all sounds so exhausting!  (I'm imagining walking up and down stairs for 2 1/2 hours with Calvin who would be bored after about 15 minutes). 

We spent last weekend at Grandma Cheri's house so Brad could play in the San Jose disc golf tournament.  He came in 4th place, pretty darn good considering he hasn't played much in the past couple of years!

Grandma Cheri took us to a place called the "Jungle" - a big jungle gym for kids that Calvin loved.  He cried when I had to drag him out of the bounce house (some big kids were going to bounce him right out of there!). 

I'm most proud to report that Calvin has been doing great about staying dry for the last month or so.  We started the potty training thing by allowing Cal to earn a candy corn each time he went.  Then we upgraded to an M&M for going in the big potty (that worked too!).  This weekend at Grandma Cheri's house he even stayed dry through both nights.  Amazing!

We also went to Shoreline with Cheri and Kathy - Cal liked watching the sailboats and windsurfers.  It was a fun weekend :)

Today I am off to work and Brad gets to stay home.  Another perk of working for a non-profit is that you get to work extra days.  :) Ha!

Calvin is 2 years old (He'll be 2 1/2 in December).  He is a talkative, imaginative kid who is stringing along several sentences to describe things to us these days.  He slept in a bed last night by himself - first night out of his crib.  He did great!  He goes to "My gym" in Folsom a few times a week.  Calvin can do a forward roll unassisted, and he is brave enough to do the zip line across the gym (the look on his face is priceless).  Calvin's goal in life is to get big enough to ride on a rollercoaster :)
