Message from the CDC Office:

Coaches, Parents and Players:

Welcome to our winter season of CDC Basketball. We are looking forward to a great season and would like to share some helpful information with everyone. We have a partnership with Carmel Clay Schools and this allows us to use their gyms for practices and games. We are guests in the schools and it is important we treat the schools and their staff members (administrators, teachers, custodial staff, after school care supervisors) with respect.

We also ask that you are mindful of the following guidelines:

1.  Please do not bring players more than 5 minutes prior to practice. Players must be supervised at all times. Please pick up promptly at the end of practice.

2.  There is no food or drink (except water) allowed in the gyms.

3.  Parents must supervise other children and no one is permitted in any other area of the building.

4.  No banging on the doors.

5.  If for some reason a school event is going on that we have not been made aware of, please cancel practice and call CDC to reschedule.

6.  If CCS cancel school we do not hold practices. Please use the weather line 846-1663 press 1 (listen for basketball) for information. If you do not hear todays date, there are no cancellations. This line is only updated when a cancellation is announced.

7.  All scheduling is run through the CDC Office. Coaches or parents are not to contact the schools directly.

If you have any questions please contact the CDC Office or your age-level commissioner.

Thank you!

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Season:

Welcome to Another Great Season of Carmel Pups Boys Basketball!

The basketball season is fast approaching and I wanted to send out a quick note to the Carmel community to give everyone some information on the upcoming Pups boys’ basketball season. I am very excited about some of the changes we have implemented this year as we continue to work to make our program the best youth travel basketball program in the state.

First of all, tryouts for the upcoming season begin on Sunday, 9/18. Please go to the CDC website (http://www.carmeldadsclub.org) and click on the Basketball tab and then the Travel section for all the times and more detailed information. As a reminder, please make sure you register at the CDC before coming to the tryouts. Also, I would ask that no past Pups basketball attire be worn at the tryouts.

The support of Carmel Head Coach Scott Heady and his staff has just been unbelievable and is expanded even more for the upcoming season. The CHS staff will not only lead and run the tryout process, but they have committed even more time to our program this year. One of the CHS coaches will be assigned to every grade level of Pups basketball to help with fundamentals instruction, practice drills, as well as attend games and provide input back to the individual teams but also to our program. The basketball staff has also committed to four nights of clinics for the coaches as well as the players this year. Coach Heady is again sponsoring our locker room visits during a game and a recognition night at the high school and that is always a great experience for the players and coaches. Each of our teams will also get the opportunity to practice and play on the newly resurfaced high school basketball court.

All of our Pups teams this year will also wear new uniforms and pictures of the new uniforms as well as our new practice gear will be posted on our travel site this week.

Did everyone see that we were adding 3rd Grade teams to the program this year? Did everyone also know that we now have approval for Carmel Pups players to participate in Summer and Spring travel teams sponsored by the CDC? Do those 6th grade families out there know that our teams get to go represent our community and play middle school teams from surrounding areas such as Fishers and Lebanon? All of these things are just a quick snapshot of what is planned for the upcoming season.

In closing, please register for basketball soon and I encourage all players to come out and participate in our open tryouts next weekend. This is a great time to be a part of the Pups basketball program and I look forward to seeing all of you on the courts!

Thank you.

Dennis Wolfe

Carmel Pups Boys Basketball Program Overview:

(2-3) 3rd Grade Teams to be added in 2011!

Season Duration:  The Pups season begins in late October and continues into March for regular season games and tournaments, and April for the State Tournament.  Practice will begin after Fall Break with games starting around the middle of November, unless a team plays in a Halloween tournament in which case, they will start playing at the end of October.

Pups Boys Travel Basketball Grades:  3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grades.

Number of Teams:  For 2011 there will be 2-3 teams for 3rd grade and intent is to have 4 teams per grade with 8 players on each team for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade.

Total Number of Boys in the Program:  112 Boys / 14 Teams

Teams:  The intent is to have the 8 strongest players play on the Gold team, the next 8 strongest players play on the Blue team, the next 8 play on the White team, and the next 8 play on the Grey team for each grade.

Tryouts:  Tryouts will begin in late September.  There are three rounds of tryouts for each grade except 3rd grade that will have two rounds.  It is expected that all boys will attend all rounds of tryouts for their grade if at all possible. The strongest players in each round will be invited back to the next round of tryouts.  There will be cuts made in each round to get down to the final 32 boys for each grade by the end of the third round of tryouts.

Evaluators:  At each tryout, there will be 8 to 10 independent evaluators watching the tryouts.  The independent evaluators by design do not have any family members trying out in the tryouts they evaluate.  These evaluators determine which boys make the Pups program and on which team the boys are placed.

Coaching Selections:  Interviews with the Coaching candidates will take place toward the end of August.  Each Coaching candidate will be required to turn in a Pups Travel Program Application and will be interviewed by the Coach Pups Boys Travel Basketball selection committee.  The selection of Coaches will be made for each grade after all of the players for each team in that grade have been selected. The Coaching selections will be announced shortly after the teams are announced near the end of September or the beginning of October.

Recommended Maximum Games Per Season:  The maximum recommended number of games by the program is 40 games for 3rd and 4th graders, 50 games for 5th graders and 60 games for 6th graders.

Practices:  Based in part on a high demand for court time across multiple sports and age groups, Pups teams will typically practice 2 or 3 nights per week for 1 1/2 to 2 hours per night.  Practices are generally held at the Carmel High School Fieldhouse Courts or at one of the Middle School Courts.  Practice times typically start as early as 6:00 PM and are generally done by 8:00 or 8:30 PM or as late as 9:00 PM depending on gym availability.  Typically the younger teams (3rd grade) get the earlier times and the older teams (5th & 6th grade) get the later times.

Saturday Games:  The Pups teams typically play their Saturday games at the Indiana Basketball Academy (IBA) near Keystone and 96th Street in Carmel, or The Fieldhouse near 116th and I-69 in Fishers.

Sunday Games:  The Pups teams play their Sunday games in the Indy Hoops League at locations all around the Indianapolis area (Pike, Lawrence, North Central, Franklin Central, Fishers, Noblesville, Center Grove, etc.).

Season Tournaments:  The Pups teams typically play 2 or 3 or possibly 4 tournaments during the season.  These tournaments are selected by the individual teams and coaches and are generally held at Halloween, Thanksgiving Break and Winter Break and may be at locations all around Indiana including Fort Wayne, Bloomington, Merrillville, Terre Haute, Lafayette, etc.

State Tournament:  The strongest Pups teams typically play in the state tournament (regionals and finals) in March and April depending on how far they go in the tournament.

Extra Games for 6th Grade Pups:  The 6th Grade Pups teams occasionally play some games during the week against nearby schools from Lebanon, Fishers, etc.

Cost of the Pups Program (8/8/11 UPDATE ... Including CDC Winter Basketball Registration Costs):  Each Pups player will need to sign up for the CDC Winter Basketball League (prior to tryouts) at a cost of $75 plus the $50 cost of an annual family membership (this $50 fee may already have been paid if the family has any child who already participated in a CDC sport earlier in the year).  The Pups fees are in addition to the regular CDC Winter Basketball Fees ($75 or $125 if an annual family membership is required).  The Pups Fee at the beginning of the season for all players in the program is targeted to be $500. More details to follow as costs are finalized. In addition there are a number of optional purchases including team shoes, spirit wear (shirts, sweatpants, etc.), team jackets and team bags.  These optional expenditures are not required, but many of the players do purchase at least some of these items which may in total be in excess of $200 per player.  The other expenditures during the season include the admission cost for spectators at games.  There is no admission charge for two coaches and all of the players from each team.  The cost of entry for spectators is typically $3 per person at the IBA and Fieldhouse and $3 per person and $6 per family for the Indy Hoops League locations.  In addition, there could be mileage, hotel and meal expenses for out of town tournaments.

Carmel Pups Boys Travel Basketball Commitment Policy:

Based on the recommendations of the Carmel Dads Club Travel Committee in coordination with the Carmel High School Athletic Program Leadership and Coaches, the Carmel Pups Boys Basketball Travel Team Program has adopted the following policy for the 2011-2012 Boys Pups Basketball Season:

Carmel Pups Boys Travel Basketball Program activities and events will be the TOP SPORTS PRIORITY for each and every player on a Carmel Pups Boys Basketball Team for the entire duration of the 2011-2012 season.

This policy means

1)  All Pups players are expected to attend all Pups events (practices and games) unless there is a family or school event or illness that prevents them from attending the Pups event.

2)  Anytime there is a conflict between a Pups event (practices or games) and another team sporting event of any type, the Pups event will be the Pups player's top priority, and the Pups player will attend and participate in the Pups event.  This includes team meetings with the Pups Team Coach before or after practices and games.  As an example, if a Coach asks players to arrive 30 minutes before a game to get ready for the game, or meet for 10 minutes after a game to talk about the game, that time is considered a top priority just as much as the game or practice time itself.

3)  If a Pups player misses a Pups event for any outside team sporting event, that player may be disciplined at the discretion of that player's Pups Team Coach.  That discipline may include reduced playing time in practices or games or possibly the total loss of playing time for an entire practice and/or game.

4)  If a Pups player attends a Pups event after playing for or practicing with another sports team earlier in the day of a Pups event and appears to the Coach to be tired or playing at less than full capacity, the Coach at his own discretion may reduce or eliminate playing time for that player during a game or practice.

5)  For the duration of the 2011-2012 Pups season, all of the Pups players are expected to put the best interests of their Pups Team above the interests of any other sports team.
