Thanks for the pictures Christine. I would love to see pictures of the others and to know their weights as well.
2/11/2009 1:04:44 AM - 002034368242
Hi to Everyone
Just was curious what all the other pups weights are now? I just took Ginger in for final shots last week and she was 7.2 pounds. She was the smallest so I am wondering how she compares now.
Thanks in advance

Hi Everyone-
Love our puppy (autumn/Belle)-lots of fun and yes, work! Hope alll of you are enjoying and doing well-
Any suggestions for products to clean the eye area? I've read a lot of the over the counter solutions really don't work-any household/everyday products that might be helpful? Belle does have some tear staining-more so just very recently-also read it could be related to teething-any truth to that theory? Thanks-

Great pictures of Trixie and Jack. We enjoyed them very much. I think I want to keep this forum going for a little bit longer until the pups get settled in then I will take it down. After that you can just email me privately. So feel free to add things, I love seeing the pups, we miss them a lot!
If anyone has an objection to me using your photos on my web site let me know, I am archiving the better ones. I think I need to do a "happy owners," photo album!
12/10/2008 4:37:16 PM - 002034891585
Loved the photos of the pups at ten weeks old-they seem so happy frolicking together-can't wait to meet Autumn but realize her separation from the group will be an adjustment-as for Bebe and all the pups!
11/27/2008 12:38:02 PM - 002034891585
Thanks!!! Will do regarding guests/shoes at Christmas-assume we are okay for now at Thanksgiving since no pup is in the picture for several more weeks yet-I was just getting a bit paranoid about parvo-Nieces and nephews are excited about the puppy but we definitely won't allow unsupervised play!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
11/27/2008 11:55:56 AM - 001083741474
Sorry for replying late, I have been busy with holiday preparations. Just have your guests remove their shoes at Christmas at the outside door. Buy a can of Lysol spray, at the very least spray the bottom of their shoes, but taking them off is preferred. It won't hurt to Lysol spray your carpets before the pups go home. Watch your pups around children, my experience is that they play nice....until you turn your back. Even my grand daughter is not allowed to be with the pups unsupervised and she is very puppy savvy.
11/26/2008 2:20:48 AM - 002034891585
Can you advise me-with Thanksgiving guests visiting and the puppy expected to arrive on Dec.12th-do I need to be concerned this far in advance regarding the parvo virus? Do shoes need to be covered/removed?
Thanks-

The pups are truly adorable and we are very excited that "go home" day is getting close. As wonderful as it is see how cute they are in pictures, its a bit frustrating to see and not touch. I'm eager for the day we get to be the ones playing with the puppies!
11/21/2008 2:17:40 AM - 002034891585
-Hi!!
I have been checking the site regularly looking for updates and new photos-those I just viewed are terrific! The puppies are adorable- not sure which pup is which but it really doesn't matter-as all are

Hello everyone. So far, I think three of you have elected to use my courier? I do not know the details of this other than the date Peggy leaves. But, no money is to exchange hands between her and you. However, I will send two copies of your contracts, one to come back and one to keep. And, I will post a sample contract online soon.
So, as far as payment goes, if you want to write a check from your checking account, that's fine, but it has to be sent soon so it can clear. It is to be made out to my legal name "Cora Williams." Please email me for the address I do not wish to post it on a public forum. I typically don't request payment until pick up but it's different for those of you using my courier. And yes, I have had someone write me a bad check. Not intentionally, but it has happened. So, I prefer cash but I realize that's impossible with the courier as I do not want her to deal with anything other than the pups and the contracts.
Another option is that I do have a Paypal account. If you have one as well you can Paypal to "carolina_cotons@yahoo.com" Note the underscore. This can be done a few days before, but no pups will leave with my courier until paid for so make sure you know how to use Paypal.
I also realize the economy stinks and I am making one time amends for that. If someone can't pay, I will just move you to a later litter but I need to know now, not at the last minute. If you tell me too late you will definitely lose your deposit. I can re-sell a puppy, but doing it at "go home" time upsets me as I do not have a chance to get to know and screen the new buyer.
The pups are all fine. What do you think of the pictures? No one ever says anything anymore. I want to hear you are excited about our babies!!!
11/11/2008 1:25:27 PM - 001083741474
Hello. I finished upgrading my operating system, and that went great but now step two is that I need to move my .com address to a more reliable server sometime this weekend. That means that the email address that this site links you to, will go down for a time, as much as a week, as well as carolinacotons.com. So, if you need to contact me, just be sure you use the carolina_cotons@yahoo.com address, or call me at 910-947-3215.
11/7/2008 12:42:31 PM - 001083741474
I had an ultrasound done on our Kate the other day, she is pregnant, which is great news as she does not get pregnant easily. This has been a wonderful forum, and since her pups are due in early December, I am going to invite those buyers to the group so they can learn from all of you! I am just telling you so you know who the extra people are. The one other extra person on here is another breeder, she and I co-own a dog together and so she is the other half of Carolina Cotons and is very involved with my endeavors. Her name is Liz.

For catalog ordering, I like dog.com and petedge.com more then Drs. Fosters and Smilth, who are very high priced. I have ordered from them on occasion though as they do have some unique items.
Petedge beats prices on most everything, but their shipping is high. You do get a discount for bigger orders, and a small order has a fee attached to it. Same with dog.com, I think with them if you order over $50 the shipping is free, not sure though. Both places will send you email specials and coupons if you sign up. And, both vendors have a really good clearance section. Also, I think big items like crates have an extra shipping cost even if you qualify for free shipping, but occasionally one of their email specials waives this.
I am going to order from petedge.com soon. If someone has a small order email me the item number, quantity and description and I will add it to my order and you can pick it up here.
Phydeaux's in Chapel Hill has the knee caps. I included them in the link. I do not know if they will mail order them, but I will try and either get to Chapel Hill or to check on that.
Pups are great, they love human contract now and get excited when I bring their mush bowl in. Their teeth are starting to come in and they gum on everything! My grand daughter adores them all, and playing with her has been really great for them as she is gentle and sweet, of course though she is 100 percent supervised. Kids will be kids!
Thanks to Sharon for the great topics!
11/7/2008 2:11:16 AM - 002035695799
I finally added a Shopping list topic. When I formatted text related to food & treats some some of it disappeared. For some reason I couldn't edit or delete the corrupted item so I created a new one. I hope to add a couple more items, but probably won't get to it tonight.
11/7/2008 1:47:46 AM - 002034891585
I'm finding this link to be very helpful as the arrival date of the new puppy draws near-I plan to put the shopping tips into practice this weekend-we have a Walmart, Petsmart and Petco very close by as well as a Cutter's Mill pet supply store-I should be okay with finding items-Has anyone used Foster's catalogue shopping for supplies? Thanks-Rosemarie
11/4/2008 2:48:40 PM - 001083741474
I might be off line for some time. I have to reload my operating system and those things sometimes don't always go well. If anyone needs anything pressing, just call me 910-947-3215.
The pups are fabulous. They are moving around, playing, barking, snuggling with me. I am working on getting them to use the pee pads on the far side of their crate and not soil their sleeping area, and they are doing very, very well at that. They also sleep in the crate quite often that I have in their box, the door was taken off of it and they go in and sleep, or to get away from the others, and that really helps a lot with crate training later on.
Okay. Get out there and vote today.
10/30/2008 2:15:44 PM - 001083741474
Hello everyone. The pups are doing great, and crawling around and playing and even barking some now. They are starting to get really, really cute. And, everyone is happy and healthy and eating puppy cereal a few times a day to help mom out some as she is growing thin from nursing five robust babies.
David and Melinda are visiting us on Friday, and I will get some pictures posted then or video of their visit.
I uploaded some new files today. I like the newer CPR sheet better than the old as it has pictures. But, I will leave both online.
10/27/2008 2:01:50 AM - 002034891585
I would love to see a shopping list! I've started to compile one myself from some sources I've read but I'd be interested in seeing what those of you have found helpful from experience. I'll also need some clarification with feeding-Any tips are welcome-Thanks!!!!
10/26/2008 8:00:54 PM - 001083741474
Hey Sharon. I would love to see your shopping list for Cotons. Start it under the forum section so we can all add to it. I have a list too but haven't gotten it ready as a topic yet. We have busy! Agility this weekend, our Katey got a first place run this morning.

We have frequented the puppy aisle for the last year and a half for our first Coton Daisy. I've started to add some messages about the pros & cons of items we've purchased and some of our favorites.

A note about SPAM from this site: Sign in to Shutterfly, go to my account, then click email, then change your preferences if you do not wish to get promo emails from Shutterfly. They do offer good deals though, but on mine I just specified that I don't want mail from other sites they sponsor.
Puppy video is uploading now, unless it repeatedly crashes, it should be online by this evening.

You can add any questions you have on the Forum side of this site. That way, any other member can add comments to it as well, as it's nice to get input and additional questions on a topic from others, not just me.
10/24/2008 5:37:13 PM - 001083741474
My dogs love to ride in the car. I have only had one get car sick. I gave her Ginger Snap cookies before riding, and it helped a lot and she got over it quickly. We do use a dog car seat though or crate in the back as one time I slammed on my brakes and a Coton hit the windshield. It's a big risk, and I didn't even slam the brakes hard, but it really scared me, and so I confine my dogs in the car.
I think taking them on car rides early on really help them to become used to it too. My dogs love to "Go bye-bye."
10/24/2008 2:03:26 AM - 002034891585
Do the Cotons in general like to travel in the car? Is it something you should familiarize them with early on? Any tips for car safety/success?

Cory !
I absolutley love this site for your new puppies ! What a great way to view them all ! I showed the hubs, and boy....that was a mistake.......now he thinks Bebe Darling needs a sister ! I told him these were all spoken for ! So, he's pouting.
We are very partial to these pups....Your Bebe makes "Darling" pupppies !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to watch the progress !!

Yeah!! I finally got on to Shutterfly-I've been reviewing the info and wonderful pictures!! The questions/answers so far have been helpful-I'll have more questions along the way so this site will be great! Thanks!!
10/18/2008 12:31:06 AM - 002034674041
FYI - I used the "Sign up" option in the upper right corner to become a Shutterfly member. After that I was able to add comments by signing in. Once you are signed in, the link above the Raycee picture on the right changes to "Ask to become a member". When selected, it sends a message to the site owner. This step might be what allows us to get email when there are updates to the site, but I don't really know.
10/18/2008 12:01:08 AM - 002034674041
I look forward to seeing all the pictures and puppy information. Since this is our second Coton, we have most of the necessities, but I'm always happy to get more information.

I just LOVE your new site. I am so enjoying watching all
Bebe's Babies grow and get stronger. I am not a buyer but I wish I WAS.
Worming and Heart Worm
Question: Cory, you have listed in the contract that she was wormed twice, just wanted to verify with you before she visits my vet.
Answer: Yes, she was wormed, but small pups do get worms easily, it comes from ingesting a flea. Not an issue so much in the north, but an issue here in the south as fleas do not die long in the winter months. Most vets will routinely look at a stool sample when they administer shots, or just keep an eye on her droppings, look for what appears to be white rice. In the spring, you will be giving her heart worm preventative. I suggest Interceptor as it will also kill any other worms she may get. So, while on Interceptor you don’t have to worry about any other parasites. Of note here, is that the heart-worm meds have been proven to last a minimum of 5.5 weeks. The company tells you to give it once a month, as that is easier for people to remember. The best thing to do is to drop a five-week reminder in your calendar and save a small amount of money each year. Every penny counts these days! But, if you do it this way, it is imperative that you remember to give the pill every five weeks, as heart worms are deadly.
I am also not a big advocate of the blood tests they make you take before giving heart worm pills. If you start the meds before it warms up outside, there’s no way they could be infected as mosquitoes aren’t alive until it starts to warm up outside. I personally don’t argue with my vet and I tell them my dog has been on the meds year round, and there’s no need for the blood test. I find that vets often add as much as they can to your bill, whether or not it is necessary. You may recall from your contracts that I suggest all the non-core vaccines be skipped. The big one I hate is the Lepto vaccine. In my opinion, more dogs die from that shot than they would from an actual encounter with a wild animal carrying the virus.

Doing Well?
How are the puppies doing? I would love to hear updates and see a few pictures. Happy belated New Year everyone!
I also want to advise that do not get frustrated if your puppy is house broken, then goes through a spell where they forget completely. This is part of a dog's learning process, to learn, then forget, then once they relearn it "sticks." I have this all the time in agility, I teach my dogs something and they have it down perfectly then forget and we have to relearn.
Best wishes all.
Re: "Jack" at Home
Looks like the name will "Frodo"...as in Lord of the Rings. The boys thought his hairstyle was similar to hobbits in the movie...and he is small but fearless. He seems to like the name, and has started responding to it. So, it seems like it is sticking...although everyone still slips sometimes and calls him Jack on occasion.
Holiday Pups
SHOULD YOU GET A PUP DURING THE HOLIDAYS?
by Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D.,
November 19th, 2008. Every ethical breeder we've ever known will advise
potential puppy buyers to never make a spur-of-the- moment acquisition of a puppy,
especially a puppy to be given as a gift to someone not fully in agreement
with the acquisition. Surprising someone with a puppy they may not want can be
like finding a human infant--an infant with the "terrible twos" no less--eating
the decorations beneath their Christmas tree. Remember, a puppy and a human
child may stay at home almost the same length of time. They are not to be
brought into your life without a lot of thought and care.
On the other hand, as long as the family has discussed the many
responsibilities of puppy training and dog ownership and agreed that a dog is desired, then
the December holidays can be a wonderful, memorable time to bring a new,
four-legged family member into the home.
There are a number of considerations, some unique to this time of year, that
should be ironed out in advance of your puppy's arrival.
When Guests Arrive
When guests arrive at any time of year it is always a good idea to first
spray the soles of their shoes with Lysol Spray or Parvocide spray (available in
many pet stores). You can leave a spray can by the door. Canine viruses, many
of which can cause fatal intestinal disease, travel on the soles of shoes. Most
serious puppyhood viruses could be reduced or eliminated altogether if you
treated shoes prior to exposing them to your puppy. In many places in Europe, it
is customary to remove your shoes and place them in the hallway when entering
a friend's home or apartment. The Austrians, for example, do this almost
everywhere, a practice which keeps their rugs spotless and their puppies
relatively healthy.
A Safe Place to Be
All puppies, acquired at any time of the year, require a safe place to stay
during the day. This puppy-proofed area may be the kitchen or, if large enough,
the laundry room or den. The area can be restricted via an x-pen (a small
portable pen, roughly 4x4 feet or larger) and should have toys, a bed, a piddle
pad and water dish. Puppies require continued potty training, both during the
day and at night, when you will have them by your bedside in a crate. Clearly,
your pup will require care now which can be divided amongst family members. In
addition to the responsibility, puppy care can actually be a lot of fun for
everyone. It is a time we remember and look back upon fondly in the lives of
our grown dogs.
If you plan to party all Twelve Days of Christmas, it is possible that a pup
is not for you at this time. On the other hand, if you have the occasional
home filled with Wassailing visitors, you should be able to safeguard your pup's
mental health and physical safety. Pups can easily be stepped on, so make
certain your puppy is supervised at all times around guests. Both pups and adult
dogs can easily run out an open door. Do not allow your puppy to run free in a
room where guests are coming and going. We have seen several tragedies with
Cotons running out an open door, into the street and into path of car during the
holidays. This, of course, can happen at any time of the year, but it more
commonly occurs during holidays when family and friends arrive, depart and
sometimes just open a door and leave to check on something outside.
House Guests Can be Good for Your New Pup
For proper socialization, puppies need to meet literally hundreds of people
during their first year of life. It is especially important that they get used
to the fact that people--strangers- -can come and go in your house. The safe
place for your puppy cannot be under the feet of house guests. So avoid a high
traffic area. While a kitchen may be a good place for your pup normally, make
sure that the pup is moved into a far less traveled room if you are cooking for
a party. An out-of-way bath room or the laundry room will do for party days.
Guests can be a problem if they overwhelm and chase a puppy. It is easy to
avoid this problem. Introduce your friends slowly to the new pup. Give them
treats that they can offer to the puppy and instruct them to get down low--on the
pup's level--to say hello. And allow the puppy to come to the guest. This is
all basic socialization 101, and the December holidays offer you an ideal
chance to recruit your house guests for this purpose. Few guests would object to
receiving a few puppy kisses (frankly, anyone who doesn't like puppies would not
be our house guests anyway!).
What to Do if Your Are Going Out of the House
Many people believe, erroneously, that they must stay with a puppy 24/7
during its first few days or weeks in the home. But your constant presence will
only invite your puppy to develop severe separation anxiety. You are far better
off leaving your puppy alone at frequent intervals. Shopping trips are no
reason to not get a puppy during the holidays. Naturally, if you go away for many,
many hours, any puppy will have to relieve itself. Ideally, you should return
every few hours to take your puppy outdoors and continue its toilet training.
However, few people can arrange that with any accuracy, so most of us employ
the old-standby: piddle pads. Make sure you purchase a plastic piddle pad
holder (a frame to hold down the pad) and spray the corners of the pad with Bitter
Apple, a solution that discourages your puppy from ripping the pad to shreds.
Puppies love to rip paper items to shred, much like teenage humans like to
throw toilet paper over trees, bushes, cars and houses.
Your puppy needs to be fed between two and three times daily. Puppy breakfast
and diner may be all that's needed, so this really isn't any more a problem
during the holidays than it is at any other time of year.
Now then, a serious limitation on acquiring a puppy during the holidays is
holiday vacation trips. No puppy should be acquired, then pawned off on a kennel
for a week. Similarly, your pup's socialization, bonding to family members
and toilet training should not be put on hold while the family goes away.
However, in some cases, it may be possible for a family member to stay with the pup
while you are gone. It may also be possible to let your breeder keep the puppy
for a short time while you are off on holiday vacation. Check with your
breeder.
Presents, Toys, Treats and Holiday Plants
This time of year presents special hazards to all pets, adult or puppy.
Chocolates are very dangerous, as are most house plants. Indeed, we have done away
with houseplants altogether in favor of ultra realistic silk plants. Not only
do they look real enough to water, none of them have died under our care in
years (we used to have a brown thumb). Keep live plants and candy far away from
your pup or dog.
Toys, should not be left in reach of pups, a they will chew on them and
potentially choke on small parts or swallow them. Similarly, casually tossed
aside gift wrappings or presents left on the floor can be damaged or ingested.
Christmas tree lights and ornaments pose a real hazard to all pets. So put your
tree up on a table or place a decorative fence around the tree. Put gifts on a
table. And provide suitable trash containers near places where gifts are
unwrapped. A little thoughtful planning can save lots of trouble later.
Re: How are they?
They will adjust fine, I would say just let them duke it out and leave them together. As long as they are just playing, Daisy won't hurt her.
Ah, puppy breath, why would anyone want to get rid of something so wonderful?????? Tell him I said to enjoy it, there's nothing better than puppy breath!
I'm glad to hear all is well. I am looking forward to seeing your budding photographers photos.
Re: transition
I'm glad she is sleeping well too!
If you can, I would hold off on visitations to other homes until her third set of shots. If someone walked through their house with Parvo on their shoes, she can get it, it is one of the most deadly and contagious and nearly incurable pet diseases out there. I know it's hard to keep her at home, and if you have to take her visiting, say for Christmas and that, then just relax but to be 100 percent safe, have them come to your house and all shoes come off at the door. They will think you are a nut, but just do what you can but don't fret if she has to go out to someone's house, just take reasonable precautions is all I'm saying.
It is totally normal to have separation anxiety at this age, they have never truly been alone before! By all means don't decide never to leave them as they will never get used to it, but try and make your trips brief and they will learn that you come back eventually. And, don't be surprised at soiling in the crate. They can get really worked up about being alone. Use the Snuggle pup, give them a quick, "Goodbye, we will be right back," then when you get home don't make it a kissing fest. Just no fuss, no fanfare.
Just tell her sharply "no," when eating inappropriate things. They are like babies and will eat everything to experiment, including their own droppings. Don't laugh, two of them have already partaken of this great sport.
I wouldn't use the yogurt/water long, they will always want it if you do and may refuse food without it. It's just a transitional option as some pups won't eat at first. If she likes to pick at her food all day here and there let her. It's no big deal to leave some out all the time. I have never had a fat Coton. But, I have had a owner one time who religiously stuck to the recommended feeding chart on her dog food bag, and when I saw her pup it was nothing but skin and bones. I was appalled. They are like humans, some need more than others. I vary the amount of raw I feed here based on what they need. My Bogey is my smallest Coton, he eats 5 ounces twice a day, my Bebe tends to be "stockier" and she eats four ounces.
Glad your hubby is in love with her. The men tend to be the biggest lushes over the pups, LOL.
Re: "Jack" at Home
I'm glad he is sleeping well and eating good. Are you keeping his name? How does your nephew feel about that? So far, I think 4 out of 5 of you might keep the names which is a real record, but definitely makes it easier for me to remember!
Re: Ginger update
I had one other of my pups do that. The owner could not figure out what was happening and set up a camera, and she was climbing over the high gates even! I would suggest a walk-through gate, they have steel bars that they can't climb up and are really convenient as you don't have to keep attaching and reattaching. We bought ours at target.com, and they have free shipping right now! You can also buy them at Petsmart and Babbies R US.
