The Carolina Islanders 16 Black team played up again in this tournament with the 17U power teams at the 2010 Sets Challenge held Feb. 20. The 17U teams played at Denny Terrace Community Center in Columbia, Sc as part of the Sets Challenge.
There were 10 teams in the 17U group. The team started off slow, but got going as the day went on. They finished up placing 6th.
The Carolina Islanders 16 Black team played up with the 17U power teams at the 2010 Plex Challenge held Feb. 6. The 17U teams played at Blythewood Park in Blythewood, SC as part of the Plex Challenge.
There were 9 teams originally scheduled to play in the 17U group, but the team from Asheville, NC did not make it due to inclement weather. This shuffled the two pools of teams and Carolina Islanders 16 Black wound up seeded 4th in Pool A.
The team’s first match of the day was against the MVP 17 Gold club from Mt. Pleasant. 16 Black took the first game, dropped the second game, and lost a close third game 13-15. In the rest of the day’s pool matches, the team was very competitive, but could not find the consistency needed to pull out the W. The team went to the silver championship bracket.
In the silver championship bracket, the team played a spirited and hard fought match, but lost to the team that eventually won the silver bracket. Carolina Islanders 16 Black finished in 7th place. The team put in a good effort against the 17U competition.
The 2010 River City Winter Blast was held Jan. 23-24 at the Prime Osborne Convention Center in Jacksonville, FL and was hosted by the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association (JJVA). The team and families stayed at the Omni Hotel downtown , only a few blocks from the convention center.
Twelve 16U teams were entered in this tournament. The tournament hosts had 5 teams in the 16U pool. Saturday pool play consisted of 3 pools of 4 teams. Carolina Islanders 16 Black was the 2nd seeded team in pool C. The girls played well the whole day and went undefeated Saturday against the other three teams in pool C. They won a total of six games (three matches). This put them in the Gold Division bracket of the tournament for Sunday.
On Sunday, the girls beat the first team that they faced, two wins to one loss. In the second match, they lost two games to none and settled for third place overall in the 16U pool. The team that they lost to was from Palm Beach, FL, who lost in the championship match to a host JJVA team. Overall the girls made a good showing for themselves and the Carolina Islanders organization.
