That is really great Gretchen! Thanks for posting these. You two were my first friends at UW when I arrived all terrified of the real world! I have always appreciated your friendship. Paul

Gretchen, thank you for this wonderful page. I think about Charley all the time, and particularly this week. This is such a nice tribute and it will help us as we get Alise to know her grandfather as she grows up. Love always, Lloyd

Gretchen, What a beautiful tribute you and Ilsa have created! This is such a wonderful way to honor Charles. May we all be comforted by the happy memories and focus on cherishing all that he contributed to science, academia and your lovely family. I am so glad he got to meet his grandchildren and I know Edie and Ilsa will keep his spirit alive by showing them photos like these and telling all the great stories about him. Thinking of you today and sending my love. xoxo Lisa

We are very much aware of the significance of this day. I cannot tell you how many times during the last year we have spoken of Charlie and though ot him and of you. We did not know him long, but we will remember him always. - Love, Larry and Jennifer Levine

A few of the many communications from friends, colleagues, former students, summer 2011:

Bill Bates: a pioneer of ascidian oocyte research when there were relatively few researchers doing this; so many researchers [have been] inspired by Charley and his incredible sense of humor and warmth towards everyone; so deeply missed.
Christiane Biermann: I'm just one admirer among the huge community of students and colleagues who will miss his incredible knowledge, kindness, willingness to help, and sense of humor.
Jarrett Byrnes: a wonderful man; the ascidian workshop is one of the highlights of my training as a scientist. He leaves a fabulous legacy in the many students he touched.
Doug Cunnian: He had a profound impact upon me as a biologist, a teacher and a person. He inspired me, demanded the best, kindled a love of research and inquiry and a passion for teaching.
David Epel: The work that Charlie did in the lab [during his sabbatical at Hopkins Marine Station] was unique and original and I learned so much about how to work with and love those sea squirts. Charlie leaves an amazing legacy for science.
Christina Goode: an amazing mentor; I owe him a lot.
Rick Grosberg: I’m grateful to have known such a fine, fine man for so many years. Every day when I walk into my lab, and I see my first squirt of the day squirt, I see Charley too. As long as there are squirts, and I am here, Charley will be.
Jon Havenhand: Charlie [and Gretchen] have always been such an inherent part of the foundations of my scientific life, and are still both a significant positive influence. Charlie was such an overwhelmingly positive influence in the lives of so many people. That legacy will live on.
Fabio Iannelli: a wonderful example for me as a person and as a scientist.
Molly Jacobs: a wonderful man and mentor for me in the world of ascidians and beyond.
Lucia Manni: I will remember Charley for his humor, and his important and original scientific contributions.
Mitsuaki Nakauchi: a truly wonderful scientist, and his contributions to ascidian biology are so great that his name will live in the memory of ascidian biologists for a long time.
Joann Otto: I admired Charley’s persistence in understanding egg activation. He was always seeking new approaches to dissect this process in ascidians.
Mike Page: a wonderful man and a valuable asset to those of us who aspire to studying ascidians.
Judy Pederson: a wonderful human being who loved biology and shared his knowledge of ascidian reproduction most generously, as well as his general knowledge of science.
Noriyuki Satoh: a really kind man to all of us and made a great contribution to ascidian biology.
Noa Shenkar: a role model for many students who had a chance to be exposed to his deep interest in science, and his endless motivation to share his phenomenal knowledge.
Steve Stricker: I have so many wonderful memories of him, particularly when we taught the Embryology class together at FHL. I hold much respect for him as a scientist and human being.

From Joe Bonaventura (joeb@duke.edu) a note about Charlie written to Gretchen, after I learned from her of Charlie's death: Oh my, I am sorry to hear about Charlie, and, the fact is that when I, as a human being am "sorry" it is for the one(s) who knew and loved the dearly departed. This is a concept I "inherited" from my Anarchist Parents (Philosophically they were anyway). We did not attend funerals, etc and were reminded that the time to honor folks is when they are alive...

This viewpoint does allow me, at the same time to extend my condolences to you! I say that I am always, each time I hear a tuba, "In Touch" with Charlie!!! In addition, even though I have not imbibed alcohol for nearly 18 years, I will never forget the time when my former relative Celia, Charlie and Ted Grabowsky, celebrated our "impending" graduation from San Diego State, in Tijuana. I do not remember who did the following, other than that I am sure I was one that did.. and by that I refer to swallowing the caterpillar that is at the bottom of each bottle of Mescal!!! Perhaps it tasted bad, but who ever remembered? Another thing Charlie gifted me with is a book, "Through the Intestinal Canal with Gun and Camera" by a Warner S. Chapelle.... a great read when one is 17 as well as 70 years old!

Thanks for the tribute and I have all the Best Wishes for you and may the "Tunicating" continue!
