Updates on the Grateful Garden, a Garden Community at CAES

Chester Community Grateful Garden: Grow Together

The mission of the Grateful Garden is: (1) to provide place-based enrichment opportunities in science, art, math, writing, geography and civics; (2) to provide healthy food to students and to connect them to the source of their food; and (3) to support community gardeners. The Grateful Garden is a volunteer effort.  We apply organic & sustainable gardening principles to our garden. We welcome donations of bulbs, native perennials, seeds, plants, composted manure, or tools. We need community members to tend our growing garden and mentor our student gardeners.

Welcome to the Grateful Garden Blog

Want to Help At the Garden?? We Need You! :)

Our next big volunteer event will be on Friday, June 1st, during the C.A.E.S. Health Fair. The Grateful Garden will be a stop on the healthy circuit. We will be planting the seedlings that the kids started in the library. Please check your calendar and let us know if you would be interested in volunteering again with the GG on that day. Email Carrie: nigeldenali@gmail.com

Garden Fairy Leaves Beautiful New Sign

Come by the Chester-Andover Community Grateful Garden (CCGG) to see the amazing new sign that has "magically" appeared! It was created and donated by local resident artist Carla Rumrill. On February 24, Carla called Carrie King, CCGG representative, saying she had painted a new sign for the Grateful Garden and would it be okay to to hang it up. Carla had noticed that our old sign was in need of an upgrade. So she took it upon herself to do something about it. What an amazing work of art, she has painted for the garden! Carla also told Carrie that she lives nearby the school and "loves seeing the kids out in the garden."  This kind of heart touching experience demonstrates how our garden touches the whole community and why we affectionately call it, "The Grateful Garden." Because we are so grateful for good neighbors like Carla & Gary Rumrill!

A Garden of Community

By Russ Elek

The Chester Community Grateful Garden is located behind Chester Andover Elementary School in Windsor County. It is one of the 40 school community gardens that received funding from Friends of Burlington Gardens in partnership with the Vermont Community Foundation. To learn more about the mini-grant program and see photos and reports from the 40 mini-grant recipients, visithttp://www.burlingtongardens.org/school_community_gardens.html

"A year ago the creek was dry because
of the drought. Everythi
ng almost died."

Carrie King is referring to the creek which runs behind the Chester Community Grateful Garden and is the garden's sole water source. It's also the creek that overflowed its banks and threatened to destroy that same garden when Tropical Storm Irene hit in late August. King has been the garden coordinator since 2007 and says sometimes when a tragedy occurs, "it reminds us that we always have resources in each other."

This has been especially true since the tropical storm, as several community members have been involved in saving the garden. Floodwaters pushed debris against a recently erected fence, forming a three-foot tall wall that blocked water from leaving the garden and created a pool inside. Jeff Svec, a community member who volunteers at the garden, saw what was happening and took action. He lifted the fence gates off their hinges (they were too bent to swing open), allowing the pool of water to disperse, relieving the pressure that had been pushing against and damaging the fence. "Had he not done that, the fence would have been gone," King noted.

In September, other community members stepped in, with 15-20 showing up for a pot-luck/pesto-making/clean-up event. Volunteers celebrated each other's company by sharing a locally grown meal and teaching kids how to make pesto. They then pulled out produce plants that had been touched by flood; they were contaminated by the floodwater and likely not safe to eat. Fortunately, not everything had to be removed; several flowering plants survived and the group left them to promote the beauty and continued usefulness of the garden.

"Students can still come out to the garden and sketch, take photos or do other nature observations," said King of what the garden offers to the community despite the lack of produce. Garden soil is also being nutrient tested now and in the spring, allowing the community to learn about how flooding can effect soil composition.

"There are other things to do besides eat in a garden."

The Chester Community Grateful Garden has survived a draught and a tropical storm in the span of two years. In the wake of both, the garden is thriving thanks to strong community.

Gratitude Abounds in the Grateful Garden

September 21, 2011 - This Friday is the first day of fall and is called The Autumn Equinox.  It is the time of the year when we are moving from the lighter, longer, warmer summer days to the shorter days and long, chilly nights that wait just around the corner.

All around us, trees and plants are ending this year’s cycle of growth. The trees are responding with glorious autumn leaves, many flowers are showing a last burst of bloom, and the remaining garden vegetables are ready to harvest before the cold season begins.

In the Grateful Garden, this is the time to express our gratitude and to celebrate the bounty that the garden has provided for us here at Chester Andover Elementary School.  Please sing silent thanks and praises as we celebrate the fabulous success of our school garden during this past growing season.

Ø  Last May, many students and friends of the garden volunteered their time, energy, and enthusiasm by weeding, expanding, enriching and planting the garden with your seedlings started in the library.

Ø  Volunteers built a new heavy duty fence and 4 large garden gates, erected with local and sustainable materials and paid for by a grant from the Friends of Burlington Gardens and our garden seed sales.

Ø  The garden is larger than ever!  The growing area has increased by 1,100 square feet!

Ø  Mrs. Hutchins & Mrs. Ferro’s social studies class launched the Garden Pen Pal project by sharing an “electronic letter and photo book” with a city school garden in PattersonNew Jersey.

Ø  We have made the transition from being a school garden to a school AND community garden.  Now the Grateful Garden is able to provide 4 individual garden beds to students and community members in which families can grow their own vegetable gardens in.

Ø  We planted a huge, juicy, new blueberry bush and a beautiful, new, tall apple tree.

Ø  We installed two gorgeous new compost bins in the garden that are ready to receive your classroom’s food wastes such as apple cores & banana peels and turn it into garden GOLD for the soil.

Ø  And throughout this summer many students and their families volunteered their time and energy to weed, water and harvest the Grateful Garden.

The Grateful Garden is providing many exciting projects planned for this fall. Although we will not be able to harvest the majority of our crops due to flood contamination from Irene, we have come up with other ways to "get our hands dirty"!

· You will find our pre-flood food in the school cafeteria, as well as food made with ingredients donated from friends of the garden. This week the cafeteria received purple potatoes, red & yellow onions and lots of garlic that was harvested before Hurricane Irene took us all by storm.  The potato salad that was served on the salad bar today was made from those organic, purple potatoes.

· Various classrooms are visiting the garden for sketching, photography and other nature observations.

· The Garden Pen Pal Program will continue to grow. It is our hope that students will come away with a better understanding of what is similar and what is different living and gardening in a completely different part of our country.

· The Classroom Composting Project will continue to be offered to any classroom that wishes to collect their snack food waste for the garden.  Please get in touch with me if you would like to set up this simple, yet effective classroom compost system.

· Plans are underfoot for an herbal potting garden for our school library.

· Teachers, I hope you will find some time this fall to bring your students outside to experience this outdoor classroom; to see, to touch, and to have a better understanding of this special part of our school.  We hope you will be inspired to find ways to compliment your classroom objectives through the garden.

· Also, please visit the Grateful Garden blog on-line which is filled with photos, journal entries and the stories of our school garden.

· Sometimes a tragedy like Hurricane Irene reminds us that we always have resources in each other and forces us to think creatively about what we truly "harvest" from our land and ourselves.

The Grateful Garden has undergone so many wonderful accomplishments this year.  Please join me in expressing gratitude to all the students, teachers and community members who made this growing season our most successful one yet!

Welcome Back! Fall News

The Grateful Garden has many exciting projects for the fall. Although we will not be able to harvest most of our crops due to flood contamination, we have come up with other ways to "get our hands dirty"! You will find our pre-flood food in the school cafeteria, as well as food made with ingredients donated from friends of the garden. You will find us in the classrooms: several teachers intend to use the garden for sketching and other nature observations. We also continue our Pen Pal Program with our sister garden in Paterson, NJ. Plans are underfoot for an herbal potting garden for our school library. We are always interested in innovative ways to bring the essence of our garden into the minds and hearts of our community. Sometimes a tragedy like Hurricane Irene reminds us that we always have resources in each other and forces us to think creatively about what we truly "harvest" from our land and ourselves.

Outrageously Easy Oven Roasted Potatoes

A Recipe  by Grateful Gardener Michelle Farrar

4 med. to lg. white potatoes, scrubbed w/ skins on

1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1-2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

Place potatoes on microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 4-6 minutes, or until potatoes just begin to soften. Cut each potato in half lengthwise. Then, cut each half into four wedges. Place the wedges in a plastic shopping bag. Drizzle oil into bag and shake. Add garlic powder, salt and pepper. Shake, shake, shake some more. Pour potatoes carefully onto lightly greased (or sprayed) cookie sheet. Arrange them in a single layer and place the cookie sheet in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes. Stir potatoes and cook approximately 5 minutes. For crispier potatoes, finish under broiler. Remove from oven and enjoy with

ketchup or without!

**VARIATIONS: 1) Add a sliced onion to the shopping bag before the final shake. 2) Spice things up with a few shakes of Cayenne pepper or Cajun seasoning instead of garlic 3) Use sweet potatoes or a combination of white, red and sweet potatoes for some extra color on the plate!**

Garden Lab - Sept. 2010

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to learn more about our garden. We learned about the garden by going outside and studying the plants and animal tracks/ scat. We also studied the temperature.

Materials: Sketch books, pencils, thermometer, camera

Results Summary: Our results show that animals and people have been in the garden. . Our sketches show that bugs have eaten some fruit. Some of the animals were bigger, possibly deer. Deer scat was found outside of the garden. Rabbits might have been in the area too.

The air temperature was 23F hotter than the soil temperature.

Results: 10:00AM, Air Temp. 95F, Soil Temp. 72F

Results sketches will be added as a photo album.

Questions we had to answer:
1. What animal signs did we see? Explain.
We were in the garden and we found footprints, scat, holes in the ground, holes in the vegetables, bugs on the plant, as well as in them.

2. What need to be done in the garden?
We need to make another fence. Other ideas will come after we tour the garden again.

3. What experiments can you think of?
We thought of putting a camera on the Welcome sign. Put a guard and a dog to watch the garden.Put a cage out with food in it and catch the animals. Build a scarecrow to fool the animals.

Conclusion:
We liked that we saw different animal tracks and signs in the garden. We liked being outside, we also liked sketching. We learned about the different tracks, We would want to change the temperature, too hot. We also want to spend more time in the garden.

Summer 2010

What a beautiful summer! Sunshine, sunshine, and more sunshine. The bright colors of the fiesta flowers in our garden soaked up the rays. A party for the eyes! Now, on the other hand, a garden also needs water. The little stream that usually serves the garden dried up completely by late June. The garden is grateful for garden neighbor, Mark Kenney, and the school custodian, Jim Spaulding, who faithfully watered the garden using school water--saving it from wilting and drying out. Other friends who tendered the garden this year--as always--were Snow Birds Margi Fineran and Amy Mosher. It is so wonderful to catch up while weeding, planting, and picking fresh beans, lettuce, mint... You might notice the addition of a garden structure at the helm of our garden. It was created by Larry Wunderle, Ange and Tuck's grandfather. It adds a certain majesty, yes? The photos reveal lots of really tiny garden friends, too: bugs, slugs, flies, bees... We also were raided a few times by underground critters. (Brings to mind the hilarious book Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! by Candice Fleming for those of you with Littles...) But despite their best dastardly attempts, we were able to harvest a good crop of potatoes, which were given to the school cafeteria for opening week. There are other root crops to come, as the garden set out to grow food that would grow long enough to make it to the fall season. To that end, we re-seeded some lettuces. The cafeteria is looking for donations from anyone's garden by the way... Garden Mamas, Carrie King, Jana Wunderle, Michelle Farrar, and others are hatching up new ideas for this years garden. Some ideas on the horizon include networking with Cavendish Town Elementary Community Garden and CityGarden in Paterson, NJ. When we grow together who knows what we'll harvest!

Spring has Sprung

Cold crops are already yielding their bounty! The seeds that the students planted inside will be planted in the garden in a few weeks. Our kids seem longer, older, too.
Nothing like a garden to remind you about renewal.

Questions:

1) What do the different temperatures show you about the snow?

The more warm temperatures are the ones in the sun, the colder ones are in the shade. Our chart shows this too.

2) What about the snow depth, what does that show you?

It shows that the snow if different depths in different places.

3) Check out the fence that we built last year. How does it look? What does it need?

It looks good, we might need to put a bit more sticks in it.

4) How does snow help plants and animals in this habitat? Explain two ways.

Snow helps the animals by giving them shelter.

The snow saves animals by like when that are trying to shoot the animal, they can hide snow and hide in the snow to block them and so they do not die.

Snow is water and water helps things grow. It freezes and te buln and preserves them for spring and brings shelter for animals.

Conclusion: In a paragraph, explain what you learned, liked, and would want to change.

I/ we learned that temps in the snow change. I liked learning outside and I would like to change the time limit. (I would like to have longer.)

Some parts of the snow is packed and strong, other parts are loose and weak.

I learned that in different areas the air and snow can be different temeperatures. I liked going outdoors to find the information that we needed. I’d want to do fun games that helped us learn about it too when we were outside.

5/6 Winter Garden Planning Workshop/ Seedco Sale Success!

The garden workshop starts almost like a challenge. Jana holds up an outline of the garden design and says, "Outside, the garden looks a lot like this picture: the snow has made a white blanket, like a blank canvas over the garden. You guys need to figure out how to fill it."
Luckily the 5/6 students are becoming pros at visualization and gardening. Within minutes, we are bombarded with fantastic and fantastical ideas:
* a jalapeno pepper mascot
* a garlic border to keep out rodents
* a shed for tools
* a pickle garden
* an expanded sensory garden (lemonbalm is to 5/6 graders what catnip is to kittens)
* a statue
* a sun dial
* a hydroponic garden
* a winter photo shoot of the sleeping garden (is that like a sleeping giant?)
* a root garden for the cafeteria
* extra crops for the food shelf
* a call to the community for tool donations
So we learned today, among other things, that you can sow something in the middle of winter in the middle of Vermont: Ideas. Let's see how they grow.

The PTA would like to thank the entire CAES and local community for making the 1st Grateful Garden Seed Sale a huge success.  Thanks for imagining your summer time gardens during those February days because by doing so we raised $1000  for Chester Andover Elementary School!!!

Please join me in a huge salute to 3 outstanding students Megan Spinrad, Arin Kenyon, and John Dion.  Thanks to the amazing  top  3 seed sales people we sold $300 worth of vegetable and flower seeds.

We are extremely grateful to the CAES faculty and staff -  Who bought over $200 in seeds and have generously opened their doors to the Grateful Garden.

Together we sold 1145 seed packets and made CAES is the #1 Seed Sale School Champions at the Fedco Seed Company in Maine!

After the Harvest (Almost)

In some places in the world, November 1st signifies the end of the year. The harvest is brought in, the days grow shorter and darker, and the waiting begins.
At the Grateful Garden, things are certainly looking frosty these days. Yet our Lil' Gardeners are still hard at work--planting bulbs (tulips, allium, and garlic) and picking kale, leeks, and celery. Winter stays so long here that we must have our fingers in the soil for as long as we possibly can! Soon enough it will be time to sit around the fire and look through gorgeous seed catalogs... But not yet.

Jana Gardening Tip O' De Day: Plant allium with your tulip bulbs. Allium is a cousin to the onion bulb. The smell of it keeps the squirrels and chipmunks at bay. (Now if only it kept the deer away when the tulips are in bloom!)

Throw Away Your Can Openers and Plug-in Your Cuisinart

Much enthusiastic talk at the garden this Tuesday afternoon about harvesting. The kids will get to see the "fruit of their labor" (pardon the expression)--and, as Jana pointed out, it won't be coming out of a can! I'm attaching the text of Carrie's open letter to the staff, inviting them to tour the garden on the Fall Equinox.

There also is information about our fairy garden installation at the Nature Museum at Grafton's Fairy Tour later this month. We'll be making a fairy model of the Grateful Garden, naturally. Preparation for the big event--you know, collecting tiny twigs, small growth from the garden itself, dirt(!)--will be at the garden on Thursday, September 25 from 1 to 3:ish. Then we will drive over to Grafton to place it in our special spot in the wood. Then we wait for fairies...

You can see from this week's photos that we are still planting--more lettuce. Maybe it will wind up at the CAES salad bar in a few weeks? Patience, it seems, is a necessary virtue in a gardener. (Another good lesson for the kids... and their caregivers!)

Carrie's "epistle":

CAES teachers and their students are invited to a Garden Harvest Tour of the Grateful Garden on Tuesday, September 22nd, which coincides with the first day of Autumn.  The Gardeners will be available throughout the school day on Tuesday to guide your classroom through the Grateful Garden The tour will last approximately 30 minutes.  If you are not available on Tuesday 9/22, we will work with you to schedule a date that fits better.  Speak with Carrie to schedule your classroom Harvest Tour.

During the Harvest Tour, kids will break into small groups to explore the Garden.  Discussion will focus on harvesting and cooking the vegetables, as well putting the Garden to bed for the winter.  We hope to offer each participant a cup of homemade soup, zucchini bread, or pesto pasta during the Tour so they get a real taste of what their hard work in the Garden has produced. We wish to formally thank the students and teachers who have contributed so much over this past growing season with the garden design, the seed starting, fence building and the planting workshops.

The Grateful Garden is very pleased to announce that we are providing a Vermont Garden Cart loaded with garden tools (spades, rakes, trowels, watering cans, gloves) to the CAES community.  Any teacher who wishes to take their students out to the Garden to explore will have the basic tools to do so.  This cart will be stored in the Maintenance Garage.  To access the cart, you would simply contact Mr. Spaulding and he will make it available to you.  Funds for the garden tools and cart were generously made available by the CAES PTA Garden Committee.

Also, Classroom Compost Buckets and decomposable collection bags are being offered to every classroom that is interested in composting the classroom snack waste.  Ms. Hutchins’ students were the Compost Test pilots last year and they can attest to the success and ease of the Classroom Composting Program.  The Grateful Gardeners will guide you through implementing Classroom Composting and provide you with the tools necessary to make it a success in your classroom.

We will be submitting a Fairy Garden in the Grafton Nature Museum’s Fairy Tour on September 26 & 27.  Over the next 2 weeks we will be focused on building a Fairy Garden.

If you would like to see our CAES Grateful Garden Blog, loaded with great photos, please click here: http://chesterandover.shutterfly.com/gratefulgardenblog

Thanks your interest in and for putting positive energy in the Garden.  We hope you will want to incorporate the Grateful Garden into your classroom experience, and will be eager to begin when the growing season kicks off next spring.  Teachers who are interested in working with the Garden are asked to contact Carrie Roy King at nigeldenali@... or 875-5153.

Back to the Garden: Mixing Plants & Politics

Yesterday's Time for Lunch Eat-In was a great success. Many folk came out to raise awareness about slowfoodusa.org's national campaign to bring REAL food into school cafeterias. If you want to sign the petition to raise funds and awareness about nutritious school lunches, go to http://www.slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/
Thank you, everyone, for coming together. Kudos to Carrie King and Domenica Coger for being the first to pitch in and spread the word, Bird (as Carrie says).

Of course, many friends also came to eat! Chester folk sure do know how to cook locally grown food. It was fun to compare what was growing in our home gardens. The children seemed to really enjoy the corn, zucchini muffins, chocolate banana bread, brownies, pizza, and fruit salad. Other culinary highlights were pesto pasta salads, warm succulent squash (can you tell that was my fave?), watermelon gazpacho, and cucumber/tomato salad. There also was a colorful carrot, broccoli and maybe a lentil salad? Someone needs to help me on that one. Don't know exactly the ingredients but it was yummy!

The Eat-In also brought some attention to the Grateful Garden. Some friends had not visited in a long time or seen the garden at all. It was interesting to observe how quickly people began weeding, picking, and oohing and ahhing over all the smells, colors, and shapes. We are all natural born gardeners!

Except for an unfortunate tomato blight, the garden's bounty is healthy and impressively substantial. So I was excited by Carrie's report that many CAES' teachers and kitchen staff are going to help with the harvest. Won't it be something to see a student's face when she finds her name written on popsicle stick, signifying that she planted that eggplant or marigold or onion way back in spring inside the library?

To prove you learn something every day, Jana taught me yesterday that the seeds from the herb cilantro, which can be found in the CAES garden (naturally), turns into coriander!
Jana tip o-de-day #2: Plant mint wherever you don't want ants.

Weekly garden maintenance starts in an hour or so. Who knows what fact or veggie one might dig up next?

"A Grateful Goodbye": A Field Trip to Camp Plymouth!

Sunday, August 16, 2009; Camp Plymouth State Park, Echo Lake:
Our Fearless CAPN Captain, Carrie King, arranged a grand farewell for Margi, Rob, Miranda, and Felicity. Many friends came out to celebrate the amazing impact that one family can make on our little community (see photo album).
If you look back at all the photo albums posted on this blog site (most of which were taken by Rob!), you can literally see the story of the community garden enfold. Always present (although not necessarily always center stage) is Ms. Margi, working her magic in the classroom, in the garden, and into our hearts...
You'll also see many joyful examples of Ms. Felicity and Ms. Miranda: unearthing veggies, teaching Littles, grabbing worms, and smiling, smiling, smiling!
Rob will never forgive me if I wax poetic about him! But Billy Goat Gruff as much as he wants, we know what a softee he is for bringing folk together--sharing stories and getting the good fight won.
Now we just need Margi to post that wonderful zucchini chocolate chip muffin recipe. Of course, I'm not saying that my version will ever taste the same...gonna need help with that, Margi... When is your next visit home--and you know I mean Chester?!

P.S. I apologize to the many people who I did not manage to take a photo of us at the park (in particular the older kids who were doing crazy acrobatics off the dock). There was so much good fun goin' round that I often had to put the camera down... !

Ravishing Radishes

"This one looks tie-dye!" "This one is teeny!" "This one is a beautiful pink!"
Lots of exclamations of joy and surprise as some of the Junior Gardeners harvested radishes... It truly is amazing to pluck a leafy green out of the ordinary looking dirt and find a recognizable vegetable at the other end. (This happens to me every time. It's not like I don't know where all those fruits and veggies come from at the farmer's markets and supermarkets. But still...)
The Ravishing Radishes so enticed our Juniors that they began to stockpile them for eating. The Grateful Gardeners prompted: "Have any of you had a raw radish before?" Nope. "Maybe we should pick the most promising and share it first?" Okay.
After much much fun at the newly installed water pump (hooray!), the radishes were ready for "testing." I urge you to look at the pictures in the "Radish Harvest" photo album for the results of the test. No words needed to describe!
So we are going to post a radish recipe soon to help ease our Junior Eaters into some of the more bitter veggies. After all life itself is a balance of bitter and sweet, right? Yet another growing lesson that comes across effortlessly in the Grateful Garden...

Pen Pal Program: 2010-2011

Pen Pal: VT>
The Grateful Garden has launched a new program: a pen pal program with City Greenan organization dedicated to facilitating the establishment of urban farms and gardens in northern New Jersey’s cities. Mrs. Hutchin's and Mrs. Ferro's 3/4 social studies class has written the first "letter" or, in this case, electronic photo book. We are eagerly awaiting a return letter from our sister school, Paterson #3, in Paterson, NJ. It is our hope that students will come away with a better understanding of what is similar and what is different about being 9 and 10 and gardening at school. (We like to call it: City Mouse and Country Mouse!)

Here is the first response from our pen pal friends at Paterson Public School No.3 with City Greenan organization dedicated to facilitating the establishment of urban farms and gardens in northern New Jersey’s cities. It is going to be fun to compare our gardens this fall! Hooray!
