Step 1
The wedding gown is cleaned, removing all visible and latent stains from the fabric. Michelle, our Wedding Gown Specialist, inspects the fabric with a blacklight to ensure all sugar stains, which may have dried clear, have been removed.
After inspecting the gown for stains and necessary repair work, Michelle removes all metal, foam and elastic from the gown. These materials can cause future damage to the gown. They are stored in the preservation chest with the gown, but not in direct contact with any fabric.
The gown is then pressed to remove hard wrinkles and creases.
Step 2
After cleaning, Michelle wears gloves throughout the remainder of the cleaning and preservation process. This extra step prevents the oils from her fingers from transferring onto the fabric of the gown.
Michelle inspects the beadwork on the gown to ensure no beads need tightened and/or replaced.
Step 3
The gown is layed flat on a wide, clean surface. This allows Michelle to arrange and smooth the various layers of fabric. It also provides additional opportunities for inspection of the fabric and beadwork.
Step 4
Michelle inserts a bust form to support the bodice and provide support during preservation.
As with all of our preservation materials, the bust form is acid-free to prevent yellowing and discoloration over time.
Step 5
Michelle adds acid-free tissue between all layers of fabric. The tissue acts as a buffer between the fabric, which ultimately decreases the amount of wrinkels that form in the fabric.
Step 6
After placing tissue between the layers of fabric, Michelle begins to strategically fold the gown. Specific folding techniques are used to further prevent hard creases and wrinkles from forming over time.
Step 7
After the gown is stuffed with tissue and folded, it is placed into the preservation chest. At this time, Michelle also places accessories into the chest with the gown such as a headpiece or veil.
She also places any removed items into the chestll. Small items such as snaps or hook & eyes are wrapped in tissue and then placed in small muslin bags. Additional tissue is then used to buffer contact with the fabric.
Step 8
The preservation chest is then closed, although it is not sealed air tight. All fabrics need to breathe, with wedding gowns being no exception to that rule.
Michelle places the Guarantee Label on the outside of the box.
Step 9
Michelle stands the preservation chest up-right to ensure the gown is centered and secure inside the preservation chest.
Please note - there is white tape on the chest, which "seals" the seams. The only purpose of this tape is to prevent insect infestation. It does not serve any other purpose.
Step 10
The preservation process is complete and the outer lid is closed over the chest.
We have several different sizes of preservation chest and Michelle carefully selects a size that will best fit the gown. She chooses a chest that will minimize the gown shifting due to extra space inside the chest.
Our most used chest is considered our Traditional Size chest and is approximately the size of suitcase.
Step 11
The preservation chest is then slide into an unbleached muslin bag. This bag serves as extra protection for the preservation chest (protection from scuffs and surface dirt) and make a nice presentation.
The bag can also be personalized with names, dates, etc.
