Clovis VFW Post 3225 - clovisvfwpost3225
Oct 8, 2011
On October 8, 2011, Post 3225, in Clovis, California had a memorial dedication honoring the Clovis School District soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ceremony consisted of a flag retirement for each of the eleven military casualties. A 13 inch by 13 inch granite replica of the five foot monument was given to each family. The monument has two sides, one side with a picture of a kneeling soldier honoring a fallen comrade with the American flag as a background. The other side of the monument has a list of the names of the fallen soldiers. The black granite monument was unveiled by family members as three major television stations of Fresno recorded the event for the news.
The ceremony opened with the usual pomp and circumstances with a table set by Trustee Karen Ertman, for the missing soldier. The program was open by Post Commander Jim Anderson followed by a welcome message from President Beverlee Bargamian of Women s Auxiliary of Post 3225. After a opening prayer by Cheryl Laughlin, Post Adjutant, buglers played the National Anthem. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Post Trustee August Flach.
After a brief message about the occasion by Commander Jim Anderson, a flag ceremony to be remembered for a long time unfolded. A name of the fallen soldier with branch of service and rank was read. In strict military tradition, with bagpipes playing appropriate music, Post members with folded flags , presented the flags to be accepted by another post member for retirement. In twosomes they marched to the fire pit where Past Commanders Gordon Pickett and Art Nunes unfolded the used flag and placed it on the fire. All four members stood at attention and saluted the flag with a slow salute, while members of the Military Order Of The Purple Heart Chapter 106 stood at attention with Post Commander Anderson and Trustee Flach. The ritual was repeated for each fallen soldier. The post members retired to a formation at the rear as the members of the Purple Heart with Post Commander and Trustee approached the fire pit to render the last slow salute to the flag retirement ceremony. It was all done with grace, honor, and reverence.
The presentation of the granite plaques was done by Roy Bell, a veteran, and Bob Pierce, men who were instrumental in making this event happen. Members of the Post 3225 proudly held the plaques as they surrounded the monument for the unveiling.
Family members present were called forward to uncover the monument. As the monument was unveiled echo taps was played by the buglers; the beauty of the monument and the music was a fitting tribute.
After a closing prayer by Tom Gritton, Second Vice Post 3225, and closing words by Commander Jim Anderson, Post 3225 in groups of four approached the monument and gave a final slow salute as Amazing Grace was played by bagpipes. The Military Order Of The Purple Heart gave the final slow salute, then the rest of the audience slowly approached the monument to take picture, to touch, and to honor the fallen heroes.

Clovis Rodeo Parade 2012
CLOVIS RODEO PARADE 2012
The parade was a great success from start to finish. The start was in the preparation of the float and a big thanks to all those who participated in getting the float ready for 2012. Art thinks we might redo the float next year to connect with the theme, maybe. We may need a few new things on the float, some of the signs are getting faded, but they still got the job done this year.
The preparations for the parade on Saturday morning went great. The Flach mobile pulled the trailer out of the barn and we were ready to go. Some rode some walked to the staging area. We were early in the parade near the front. It was a festive atmosphere waiting for the parade to commence. We visited with everyone around us. It was my first parade, I like to watch parades from the sidewalk. We all appreciated the applause we received for the entire parade. A majority of the people watching clapped and stood up when we passed. We represented the Post 3225 real well. I was especially pleased with the participation of the Auxiliary, they added a lot to our group. We also had non post members with us and picked a couple of new members.
We finished the parade early, by 10:30 the trailer was back in the barn. Bill Kimzey walked the whole route; he led our procession. I think Bill is ready to walk ½ marathon after that jaunt. Don did you ever find your keys. Don walked home, another ½ marathon man in the making.
A little gathering after the parade and we would love to see a few more next year. Someone even talked about a second vehicle. 2013 may even be better, (don’t see how, we were pretty good this year).

POST 3225 RECOGNITION MEDALS
March 24, 2012
Saturday March 24 was a day to recognize Veterans from WWII and Korea. The event was held at the CVMD in the evening. About 90 people attended, and most participated in one way or other.
The new Post canopy and table covering were displayed as you entered the banquet room. It was quite impressive for everyone that entered. Rob Ambrosini welcomed everyone and he had nametags for everyone. As the honoree, veterans entered August Flach and his committee briefly interviewed the medal recipients.
Hors d’oeuvres and drinks were out for the social hour. Visiting and renewing friendships filled the room. The crowd slowly filtered in, we were short of the number expected but a good crowd of post members, auxiliary and guest attended.
The evening was started with Art Nunes calling for all the service branch flags to be posted. Each person caring a flag was announced. As the service flags and the POW flag entered, Ray Ramos played “Amazing Grace”. It was the start of an incredible ceremony. After the Stars and Stripes were placed, Ray Ramos played “To The Colors” which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim Boyajian gave a very appropriate prayer. The meal was served.
Omega Delta Sigma from Fresno State did all the work for the social party. The fraternity is composed of veterans attending Fresno State. The group helped on the welcoming table, ran the bar, put out the hors d’oeuvres, and operated the kitchen. Everyone was immediately impressed with their effort and their grace. We can not thank them enough for everything they did during the evening. They cleaned in half the time it would have taken us. What a great crew. The energy, helpfulness, and taking control with little or no direction were phenomenal. We truly appreciated Omega Delta Sigma.
After a brief welcome from the Commander, the award presentation began. It was an event that we will remember for a long time. Bob Lindsey gave a tribute to Auxiliary members who had lost family members, and had a medal placed on the missing soldier table. After the medal was placed Ray Ramos played “Taps”.
The recognition of WWII and Korean Veterans ceremony was started by August Flach. A name was called and an escort would bring the honoree to the podium. A brief biography was read by August Flach. The escort then placed the Post Recognition Medal with a red, white and blue ribbon on the neck of the honoree. As each name was called, a spontaneous loud applause was given and after each medal was placed another loud applause occurred.
Max Donaldson gave the closing remarks and Art Nunes retired the flag as Ray Ramos played “Retreat”.
The evening was priceless. We honored our own Veterans; we tried to show the respect that the Post has for them. Where else could you honor three veteran brothers, the Lorings. The old veterans did not let us down. As the veterans marched up, some slowly, some quickly and some racing, we knew they were enjoying the event. Some were a little bent, some had a labored walk, some slanted to one side, but everyone soldier that night seemed to grow a couple of inches if not more at the podium. They come to a strict attention; they forced their bodies to stand as straight as they did years ago. Magnificent soldiers giving the best salutes of their lives. They will always be our heroes.
VFW Flag Retirement March 4, 2012
Flag retirement day started early. Loring Farms was busy early. Otis was up well before dawn getting ready for the crowd. Chefs were busy shortly after six; they each seemed to know the routine and needed little direction. They prepared a meal for 37 hungry early risers. A prayer by Otis Loring and we were off to the races. Eggs, pancakes, sausage, ham; gravy, potatoes, coffee and orange juice was on the menu. Max had his chaffing pans ready so it was just like being back in the service. Thanks to all the cooks who prepared the meal.
On the drive way coming in, our new canopy was on display. It was a nice welcome with VFW logos on all sides and Veterans of Foreign on two sides with support our troops on the other two sides. A backdrop with the VFW logo made for a very impressive start for the flag retirement ceremony. Once inside our new table cover was on display,
We had a few guests and appreciated their supporting our duty for the day. The Fresno City College Veterans Club show up in force, and I believe all are going to join the Post. The auxiliary members and family members attendance were appreciated. The hall was abuzz with noise as conversation and laughter was the order of the day.
Now on to the business of the day. Officer of the day Art Nunes with assistants prepared five ceremonial flags to be retired. Roy Fessenden held the five ceremonial flags as we all said the Pledge of Allegiance. Roy passed out the folded flags to the Fresno City College veterans. Standing at attention and pride, the students were paired with a member of the Post. One flag at a time was unfolded, saluted by the group. The twosomes marched up to the incinerator and put the flag into the flames. This ritual was done five times, in absolute silence and respect. We were all proud to play our part in the ceremony.
After the ceremonial flags were retired, we started assorting the flags for retirement. Everyone participated in sorting, counting and putting the flags into the flames. The fire was hot enough to keep Bill Kimzey the auditor to keep moving back from the incinerator. Bill counted 499 United States of America Flags retired. There were a few breaks as the flames were allowed to cool down.
A little excitement resulted from the large pillar of black smoke rising into the sky. Two fire engines and another vehicle visited us. They thought a building was on fire and came prepared to work. They were very understanding of what we were doing and approved of our actions. Next time we must inform them of what we are doing and when we are going to do it. That was a first; fire trucks with sirens blaring coming to put out our fire.
Thanks for everyone attending and participating. I am still amazed how well Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3225, Clovis, California attend to their duty with service, honor, and comradeship.
DEAN WESSEL AND ROTC
Dean Wessel presented FSU Army ROTC Cadet Quintin Plank with a certificate, medal and scholarship at O’neils Park . It was presented for outstanding achievement by a cadet. It was our second presentation to a ROTC group this year. We are set up to make this a yearly affair. Thanks to Dean for showing up to present the medal.
While waiting for the ceremony to begin Dean shared some of his stories of his army life and work after the army. Dean was in the Army Air Force. He was stationed in Italy during WWII. He was on the ground keeping the planes in the air.
Before his tour in Europe he was shipped to Fresno from the Los Angeles area to the Fresno Fair Grounds. He was part of the force watching the Japanese at the Fresno Fair Grounds. Today a memorial stands at the fairgrounds honoring those detainees.
Dean remarked on his marches to the firing range. It was a two day march in full gear to Table Mountain. I never imagined that a firing range existed at Table Mountain. Pin Cushion mountain was the firing range. He said it was used daily so there is a lot of lead in that mountain. He finally got to drive a truck to the firing range. He said , “If you could get the truck up to 40 mph you were doing really good.
After the war, Dean worked at Beacon Storage and Moving in downtown Fresno. He was in charge of the maintaining of the 5 story building. One day a Japanese man came to reclaim his property, a large chest. Dean could not move the chest. It was full of silver dollars. A lot of Japanese citizens came to reclaim their property at Beacon Storage.
Dean was working on storage material moved by the railroad. Quite often it became severely damaged in the transportation on the rails. He was asked how they could move the property without damage. Dean had the solution. Leave the material in the trucks and trailers and put them on a railroad car. He said it was a simple solution. Two months later he saw his piggyback idea being used by the railroad. He lamented, “I never got any money for that idea.”
Thanks Dean for presenting the medal to the cadet.
Dean has volunteered at the Clovis Boys and Girls Club for many years. He has thousands of hours never counted by our post. Until his wife, Virginia, fell and broke her hip he put about 30 hours a week in the boys and girls club. I have been finding out that our post members do a lot of silent volunteers, they serve the community without recognition.
Dean’s grandmother was full blood Indian. He doesn’t look like a ¼ Indian.

Bingo at the Vet
Bingo at the Veterans Hospital is an event that the Ladies Auxiliary participates run on a regular basis. A bingo game is given for the patients of the Veterans Hospital weekly on Sunday at 12:30 PM.
The Auxiliary Members buys pies, cakes ice cream and cookies for the players. They also provide drinks. They offer some sugar free items for the patients with diabetes. The Women’s Auxiliary serves the dessert after the bingo is completed.
One of our Post members, mainly Don Vanderheyden or August Flach, usually calls the bingo game. After each bingo, the winner or winners are given money books that can be used at the Hospital Canteen. Auxiliary Members assist the players. One or two people sit at each table and make sure the player does not miss anything and assists in any way necessary for the player to participate. We have a few post members who also participate in helping the players.
The Auxiliary buys the money books and the Post is now participating in the money books. Because of the time limits on the bingo game all, the money books are not used. With the extra books, we go onto the floors and give out some to other patients that do not or cannot participate in the bingo games.
Today four young students from the Clovis Baptist Church joined us on the floor. They toured the floors and gave out coupon books that we purchased. The patients were all kind and some were extremely pleas with the visits. The conversations get a little involved so we do not get to see many of the patients. They all appreciate someone taking the time to pay them a visit. You also meet some very interesting people who have great stories.
The Women’s Auxiliary is real pros at doing this service. They make it look so easy, when it require a lot of organization and work. In the end, they spend about 3 hours of their day and probably another good hour in preparing for the bingo. What a great service the Auxiliary is doing for veterans.
