My travel journal

Spanish Conquest!

Barcelona is a city I've dreamt of visiting for a long time.  A lot of the reason for me though, is not the same than a lot of people.  It of course has beautiful buildings and monuments, and history, but it also has some of the most amazing street riding (BMX) in the world.  Videos are put out every year from Barcelona, and riders travel there, just to ride for a week!  I went out in the city my first day, to find the places, and even though I didn't bring my bike, I just wanted to see them.  I went exploring, and found a monument called the ''Mirador de Colon''.  It's a tower with Columbus on top of it, pointing out to sea.  I took the elevator to the top and got a great view of the city and harbor.  After coming back down, I decided to check out the beach, but first I had to stop by a shop to pick up some Sangria....famous Spanish wine:).  The waves were calling my name, and it was a looooong beach, stretched as far as the eye could see with people, sandcastles, restaurants, topless girls, high rise hotels, and beautiful architec....wait a minute.  I just said topless girls, didn't I?  Let's all say it together.  Topless girls, topless girls, topless girls...there we go!  It's like a mantra.  (I know you're enjoying this gramps;).  Anyway, I spent the whole day on the beach, drinking wine, and enjoying the view:), I love my life.

After waking up from my dream on the beach, I frantically looked around to make sure everything wasn't just in my imagination....and a beautiful woman of about 22, happily assured me...it wasn't:).  From there, I went back to the hostel to get something to eat, but when I got there, I couldn't find any of my food!  None of it, all 10€ of it was gone...  They had signs posted that they would throw it away if it wasn't labeled, but mine was, and it was brand new...not even 24 hours old!  I went to tell the front desk, and they said they'd look into it...basically, too bad.  I talked to a couple other people staying there, and they said the same thing happened to them...so I just went to get some more and had some dinner at the hostel.  That night I went out with 2 guys and a girl from India whom worked in London, and we tried to find some good nightlife.  The best thing that happened all night, was a street show, with these amazing dancers that were flipping and flying all over the place.  They were breakdancing and doing one handed hand-stands, hopping on it like it was a foot.  They had two volunteers at one point, and they put them back to back, and then one of the guys stepped way back, did some running and handsprings, up and over the two people....amazing!  Other than that though...we didn't find much.  I didn't like the beer, or the environments of the bars, and there was no live music!  After one bar we headed back to the hostel and to bed...

But, the next day I went back to the beach!  Aaaaaaaalllllllll day:).

That night, after dinner, I went to the lounge area to just hang out and read (cause the nightlife just didn't seem worth it), and not long after I got there, these girls came in and started hanging out with some wine and cheese, offering me some...I didn't say no:).  There were four girls, and they're from Croatia.  In fact, they're in the Croatian Orchestra, and they all play the violin, except for one, whom plays the viola....I guess there's a difference:).  Anyway, we hung out for most the night drinking wine, with my Canadian buddy, Terry, joining us later.  As we ran low on the grape juice, I volunteered to get more, so I went across the street, grabbed a bottle for 2€, and walked back across, seeing a lone traveler on the stoop.  Chris was his name, and he was from Texas, but living in Alaska.  I found out all this after I invited him to join our little party, which continued until the lack of A/C got to everybody.  The girls went to get ready for a night out, and Chris and I sat outside on the stoop, talking until 3 a.m.  He was a really cool guy, and a couchsurfer, full of life, and gave me more of a reason to get to Alaska, the last frontier!

The next day was very different for me...I went to the beach!  But, I did invite my Canadian buddy, Terry, to come along with me, as he hadn't been yet:).  First, I got a bus ticket to Madrid, and it was for 1 in the morning.  I got it so late so I could sleep on the 7 hour journey, get to Madrid, check into my hostel, and go explore early that morning.  After I got my ticket, we got some Sangria, and went to the beach!  After hanging out and swimming, all day, we went back to the hostel as the sun was going down...rough stuff:).  Since I wasn't staying the night, I had my bag ready to go, but I hung out in the lounge area with Terry and some other people I'd met...Two columbians, two aussies, and two french guys.  It was pretty cool discussing eachother's cultures and experiences.  I took off about 1215 for my bus, which was at the same station that I'd come to Barcelona, so I knew it was close.  I got to the station, got on the bus, and got as good of sleep as I could.....all the way to Madrid.

When I checked into the hostel in Madrid, it was early, no one in my room was awake yet, so I came in as quietly as I could, put my bag on my bed, and left to go explore the new city.  The first place I went was a park, and it was within walking distance.  It was perfect timing too, as the fall colors were showing themselves in the well maintained, beautiful park.  I hung out there for a couple hours, just enjoying the morning, writing, and practicing my moutharp.  From there I thought I'd go to the supermarket and get some food to go back to the hostel with.  After walking a bit, and seeing an entrance to some botanical gardens, I changed my mind, especially cause it was only 2 in the afternoon...I'd hate to waste my time in a hostel!  So, I got a ticket for a couple bucks to go in the amazing gardens.  They had every type of plant, tree, and flower that I'd ever seen before, and more....  They also had an area with three different buildings connected, going from a desert environment, to forest, to jungle... it was really interesting.  From there, I went to get some food from a restaurant, and I was looking for the famous Spanish dish, Paella...mmmm.  However it was more of a challenge than I thought... after avoiding one restaurant because of a jackhammer 10 feet away, leaving two restaurants because of their filthy floors (cigarette butts and dirty napkins), I found a nice, clean place to sit down and eat.  I got a beer (which isn't my style as I've said before, but whatever), and looked at the menu.  I got the cheapest thing I could find.  Tripe.  If you don't know what tripe is, I shouldn't tell you, and you should try it first...but I guess that would take the fun out of this blog, huh?  I got the dish before I remembered what I actually ordered, as I've had it before....Intestines!  Pig, sheep, goat, cow...one of those, or many.  I got the dish and it looked just like I remember it, but this time it actually tasted really good!  The seasoning they put on it makes you look past the texture, which is the hardest part for unfamiliar people.  Try everything once, I always say, and I would try that again!

I headed back to the hostel, and met my sleepy roommates.  One american, three Canadians, two of whom were in the Navy, and one Aussie.  They gave me a beer and our night began, eventually going down to the bar and playing some cards.  I found out the other Canadian and American were in a program called Redleaf, which is a Canadian based company that runs summer camps for teenage kids in Spain and Canada.  They are camp counselors, and get paid very well for it...I sent them an email:).  I didn't stay up very late that night as I knew how the Spanish nightlife didn't agree with me, so I just got some sleep.

The next day I didn't do too much until later in the afternoon, when the guys from my room decided go out and explore a bit...we made it about 4 blocks when we found a nice looking bar:).  We stopped in for a couple hours, drinking coronas and talking to a kid from Britian that spoke like he was 30...not really wise, nor cocky, just how he was.  We had some really good conversation about politics and life, and how they don't relate:), that spanned 4 buckets of beer, and then we decided to go back to the hostel for a bit to relax.

I had planned to go hear some live jazz for the night, but ended up canceling that because it would cost a little too much, and the guys were just gonna stick around the hostel, so I stuck with them.  Our little adventure for the night involved getting 12 beers past a security guard downstairs...  The Aussie had met a girl in town, and wanted to bring her and the beer upstairs to hang out, but the guard was having none of it.  He made it back upstairs to tell us the situation, so I sprung into action, borrowing a bookbag from one of the guys, and heading back downstairs.

We walked out the doors and went out of sight to formulate a plan.  He decided to split up the beer, 12 for us upstairs, and 6 for him and his date...he was staying out with her, as we couldn't fit her in the bag very easily.  So, he left, and I put the beer in the backpack, and walked up to the door, ready to go in the hostel...but he wasn't as stupid as he looked.  He made me open the bag, and told me I couldn't come in with it...great!

I left the place, frustrated, and wondering what to do with 12 beers, no phone or person to contact, prostitutes and shady people roaming around the streets, and thirsty people in room 405!  I separated the beer into 2 parts, and hid 5 of them in pockets and under hats and stuff in the bag, hiding the other 7 around the corner for later.  This time the guard didn't even make me open the bag!  So much for all the hard work!

I rushed upstairs and told the guys what had happened, and set another plan into action to retrieve the remaining beverages.  Two Aussie girls had replaced the Navy guys, so I told them where the beer was, and asked them to get it with their purses.  They obliged, and soon enough we had all of the precious liquid in the room!  Mission Accomplished!

The next day was my flight to Frankfurt, and I got there a lot sooner and easier than the last flight.  It took two changes on the metro, and I was at the gate, waiting for check in.  In 2 hours, I would be in Germany, a country that I have dreamt of going for a long time... Hefeweisen, I'm coming for you!!

Peace, Love....and Paris!

Ok....so, Paris, France.  THE place that everyone talks about.  THE place that almost every little girl dreams of going, thinks about all the time, wishes her boyfriend would take her there for a nice, romantic vacation...right?

Well, after more than a week in the city, I can tell you that it IS an amazing place.  It is full of beautiful architechure, museums, history, some well known, some not.  It IS  the European city that never stops, the streets are just as busy at 3 in the afternoon as 3 in the morning.  You can meet any and every people and culture there, get any type of food, and you could live there for years and not see everything!

Our first stop when we got to Paris was a hostel that we just happened to run across.  It's called the ''Peace and Love Hostel'', and it has been, by far, the best I've stayed at!  The reception is a bar with amazing, friendly staff, kitchen open till 2, and outside seating to just sit and watch Parisian life go by.  We talked to Gen, the receptionist at the time, and she told us she didn't have any vacancies for the night, but would tommorow, so we said we'd be back, and went to find a bed for the night.  We ended up at a hotel that was cheaper than the hostels in town, and it showed....it was a place to sleep, that's it.  We put our bags down and gathered our thoughts for a bit, figuring out where to go first.  We had gotten some maps from the hostel and planned a couple places to visit, deciding to walk...which was a bad decision....never again will I walk long distances in Paris!  The maps are very misguiding, a block is like 6 blocks!  We walked all day, meeting a local girl and getting free coffee, seeing the outside of the Louvre and Notre Dame, grabbing some local street food, and later that night having a picnic by the Seine River with the local girl we'd met.  It was a great start to our Paris adventure!

Our second day in Paris, we checked out of the hotel, and went back to the P&L, where we saw Gen, ready to check us in!  We dropped our bags off, and I went to the Arc De Triomphe and got a 2 day Paris pass, which has a list of things you can get into in the 2 days you pay for.  I went up in the Arc, getting on top for an amazing view of the city!  You can see everything from there, the Eiffel Tower, Arc De La Defense, Sacré Coeur Basilica, and all sorts of other unforgetable monuments!  I spent some time up top, just enjoying the view, and when I got back on the ground, I enjoyed the outside, which is just as amazing as what I had just seen.  Statues and carvings, and an ever-burning flame to honor the unknown soldiers of WW1.  After that, I hopped on the metro (which IS the way to get around Paris), and headed to the upper East end to see the Music Museum.  I had a little bit of trouble getting there, as I got off the wrong stop, and from there had to walk to find the museum.  So by the time I found it, I only had an hour left till it closed...so basically I walked through 5 floors of instruments (with an audio tour), stopping at the interesting ones, but my main focus was the final area with African drums and didgeridoos, plus they had strings, and some aisian drums as well, all amazing instruments.  One of my favorites is the Didgeridoo, it has an amazing deep sound that I would love to learn how to play someday.  From there, I went out to enjoy the rest of the day in a nearby park, where there was some amazing architecture and people just doing the same as me.  I got back to the hostel just in time for happy hour, and met up with Loren. Gen was there, not working, but just hanging out with three Aussies that were also staying there.  We started playing a game of drinking Jenga that had something written on each block, so every time you picked up a block, you read it and did what it said.  They ranged from: ''do 10 pushups'', to ''show your bellybutton''.  It was a fun night that continued with the bartender, Milan, making a show with 9 glasses lined up, and shot glasses on top on fire.  With a flick of his wrist, the shot glasses fell in the big ones, the fire was put out, and we all got free drinks...good hostel:).

The plan for the next day...The Louvre.  I got there before it opened...before most people in the hostel were even awake, and saw the sun rise over the pyramids.  I was the 6th one in line, and waited for an hour for it to open up, but in that hour, the line grew to over 100 people, and it wasn't the only entrance!  They finally opened the doors, and it was like a floodgate opened!  Like I said, I wasn't at the only entrance, so when I got into the museum, there were probably a hundred people in there already, not even counting the staff, which is over 2,000!  I went down the escalator and chose my wing (out of 3) to go into.  I chose the one with the Italian and French paintings first, and it just so happened to be the same one that holds the Mona Lisa.  Now, I say just so happens, because I didn't go there for the Mona Lisa, in fact, she's one of the last things I saw.  Contrary, people started running past me, flocks of people, running...  It doesn't close for 12 hours people!  It's like they thought that they were going to be the first to see a painting or sculpture...I didn't understand it.  So anyway, over the next 6 hours I saw beautiful French paintings, Roman sculptures, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and the amazing architecture of the inside of the Louvre.   After I visited ONE wing of the museum, just one...I was good to go, it was time to leave, and it was a great experience.  From there, I walked in the Queen's garden in front of the Louvre until it started raining, then hopped on the metro back to the hostel.  When I got there it had stopped raining, and Loren had met a couple people he introduced me to.  We went to a park not too far away, with some drinks and hung out for a while, but these shady guys kept bugging us for cigarettes and such, so I left, as I had to book another night at the hostel anyway.  The night turned into hanging at the hostel once again, so I just chilled with the guys from the night before, and Loren stayed out with his new friends.  We had gotten phones when we first got to Europe, to keep in touch with eachother, so I texted him to make sure he was ok, as it was getting pretty late.  He didn't text me back, so the next hour, I called.  Some guy answered and started speaking French...and I got a little worried.  I called back and had Gen, whom speaks French, speak to him.  He told her that he had had the number forever and it was his phone.  Well, I've called Loren before, and texted him at the same number...so I figured something had happened with those shady guys that were bugging us.  I formed a plan and a posse, and headed out to where we were hanging out before.  The guys and I headed up to the same spot I had last seen Loren, and didn't see him, but the other people were still up there.  The Aussies were a little hesitant to get in a confrontation, but it wasn't their friend whom was missing...  We went down the stairs to form a plan, and I told them to stay put while I went back up there for a second.  I went around the park, back up some other stairs, and called Loren's phone, looking for someone up there to answer it.  No one did.  I rejoined the group, and just as we were discussing the police option, one of the guys spotted Loren, walking with his two friends.  We ran up to them, and they had no idea what we'd been up to!  I asked Loren if he still had his phone, and he did...I thought maybe he had lost it, but everything was fine, and he was ok...wow, what a rush.  I guess some signals got mixed up, as our phones were from the Netherlands.  Anyway, we filled them in on our mission, and we all had a good laugh, heading back to the hostel for some celebratory drinks.

The next day, the plan was to (finally) see the eiffel tower at night!  I'd wanted to the whole time, but with some financial difficulties that needed to be sorted out, our time was stretched.  So, we saw some sites in the city during the day, just roaming around, and once it started getting dark headed to the metro.  I wanted to stop by the Sacré Coeur first and see it all lit up at night, which wasn't a dissapointment at all!  We walked in front of the gates at the bottom and had a good view of it, but time was running short for the Effiel Tower, so we decided to head there.  Before we could do that though, some Africans came up to us and asked us if they could make us bracelets, saying it was their hospitality.  We let them, me knowing the whole time that they would expect some ridiculous sum of money.  The guy doing mine asked my name and where I came from and such, just small talk.  So, after he was done he told me to give him paper money (the smallest euro paper is a 5), and he would give me change.  Well, I don't know about you, but a piece of yarn is not worth more than a quarter to me...so that's what I told him I'd give him for the bracelet...he didn't like this too much, and I didn't expect him to.  He started arguing with me and getting in my face, saying that I was insulting him, blah, blah, blah.  I told him to back off if he knew what was good for him...  I walked over to Loren whom was getting a bracelet as well, and told him we needed to go, as he was oblivious to what was happening.  I ripped off the bracelet and walked away, hoping Loren would be behind me...but instead the idiot African con artist was behind me.  I turned around and once again told him he'd better back off.  Well, we got in a scuffle, and pushed eachother, and he ''punched'' me in the nose.  If you've known me for any amount of time, you know that I get nosebleeds from breathing...so if he would have hit me hard at all, it would have started flowing...it didn't.  That shear fact saved him from some serious pain that night, because after he hit me, I was rearing back to return the favor....but didn't do anything except push him away.  It wasn't worth it, he wasn't worth it, and he had about 5 friends there, whom were telling him to chill out anyway.  They were there to make money, and con people, so they didn't need any trouble from the police.  I finally got Loren to follow me, and we headed to the Eiffel Tower as planned, me shaking my head in disbelief at what had just happened.  I think I dealt with it properly though, getting out of the situation before it escalated.  So...beware of cons, think about the situation.  Would you go to a store and buy a yarn bracelet for 5 bucks?  Probably not.  So, don't let someone pressure you into it.

Tour Eiffel, as the French call it, is quite a site.  It's bigger than life.  It's monumental.  And it's darn right cool at night!  Loren and I got there in time to hang out for a while before the hour struck, in which it sparkles for 5 minutes.  Loren was originally going to go up in the tower, but decided against it, as it is really expensive.  There are three levels, you can go by elevator, or take the stairs, and it would probably take 45 minutes to walk to the top.  The first floor is about 9€, and all the way to the top is 20€...pretty pricey if you're trying to travel for a couple months!  We went out in the gardens that were surrounding the tower, and found a good spot to sit.  When the hour struck, the tower sparkled, just like advertised.  Afterwards we headed back to the hostel where I told of our adventures over some Desperados...

All great things must come to an end, and in this case, it was Loren's Eurotrip.  He had run out of money, and decided to head home.  We spent most of the day organizing everything, making sure he would be able to get to his flights, and have a place to stay if needed.  After all that, it was getting late, and we hadn't booked a room for the night, as I'd tried to do some couchsurfing, but had no luck.  We walked down the street to the hostel, but they were booked for the night...great!  Well, it just so turns out that I have a little bit of charm, and the workers there are amazing people, so they got some phone calls going and got us a place to stay with Jackie, one of the night shift workers!  Jackie is a really cool chick whom moved to Paris a couple years ago, after traveling in Malaysia and other places.  She is originally from Brooklyn, and her parents are both from Africa.  The stories she told me about what her parents had to endure throughout their childhood, and into their adult lives, until they got to the states, was amazing!  Wars, famine, seperation from family, discrimination...things I could never imagine.  After talking to her for a while, she left for work, and left Loren, another guy, Chris, and I, in her apartment.  I cooked some food, and after eating, we hit the sack.

Loren got up at 6 the next morning, we said goodbye, and he took off to the train station.  He would go to Amsterdam, and from there, to the states.  I went back to bed:).  A couple hours later I got back up, made some tea, and thought about my next move.  Chris got up a bit later, and we hung out for a bit, discussing eachothers plans.  He was going to live with Jackie for a while, splitting rent.  I started packing up, and just as I threw my pack on, the door opened, and Jackie came in.  I took it back off and chatted with her a bit, thanking her and talking a bit more about her parents and such.  When I left there I went to explore the area, as I'd never been to that side of town yet.  I had a flight to Barcelona the next day, but didn't have any plans for the day or night.  I needed to find a place to stay, but the hostel was once again booked up.  I could have asked Jackie to stay another night, but I figured I'd find something.  I had actually met a BMX rider a couple days before, and he told me about a riding session later that day that I should go to (he let me ride his bike for a bit!), so that was an option...but it didn't solve my sleeping arrangement issue.  My other option for the evening was a couchsurfing picnic that I saw online.  I chose the latter, and until it started, I just wondered around town, looking at things I hadn't seen yet, which was a lot!  I went by the Picasso museum, which would be closed....for the next two years!  I checked out some quaint shops with wild furniture and rugs, with just as wild of prices.  I played my moutharp, just enjoying the day, and even walked through the King Louis Park, where the meeting was to be held.

I picked up some food and drink for the picnic and headed back to try and find the group...which wasn't easy, as it was very crowded!  The only way I knew the group were surfers was that they were the only ones with food!  I also recognized the organizer, Rodney, from the online posts.  Rodney had been in the movie industry in California until he retired recently...and now wants to be a Parisian.  I told him that he's more French than the French!  It's true too, he's been setting up the picnics for a long time, knows the language very well, and loves the lifestyle.  I was about the fourth person to the picnic, and introduced myself, then broke out the food, and we all started sharing.  People continued to show up every couple of minutes, and by the end of the night, we had about 20 people, and only about 5 or 6 of those people actually lived in Paris!  Guillime and Danette showed up together and sat beside me, and I got to know them really well.  I got a couch with Guillime, whom was a local, and Danette was from California, and was going to stay with Guillime, but got a flat from her friend to stay in...a hard offer to pass up!  A guy named Will also showed up, and he was staying with Christope.  I got to know them both, and found out Will was also from Cali.  We continued sharing food and drink into the night, and actually closed the park, we stayed so late!  From there, we continued the picnic at the Seine River.  We stayed there until 3 or 4 in the morning, with a stunning view of the Notre Dame Cathedral, and people still showing up to hang out!  Guillime and I took off, and went back to his place to get some sleep, which we did, not waking up till the afternoon!

When we did get up and around (with some help from coffee), we just hung out, listening to each others music, and smoking his hooka (cherry....mmmmmm).  After I made some lunch of pasta and bruschetta, all with fresh ingredients, we called up Danette, and invited her to do some site seeing.  We met up with her outside a metro station close by, and went to the Arche de la Defense, which I'd been meaning to go to since I saw it from the Arc De Triomphe, It's a really amazing piece of architecture.  A modern arch compared to the rest in the city, it was completed in 1990, and is an almost perfect cube.  We also saw a giant bronze thumb statue...really random.  From there, we went to the Arc De Triomphe which, even though he had lived in Paris for years, Guillime had never been on top of it!  I love taking a local person somewhere neither of us have ever been, showing them things in their own city!  From there, you could see the Defense, and vise versa...the city is set up brilliantly!  I gave Danette a pass I had used before, so she could go up top, and while she did, Guillime and I checked out the outside.  After she got back down, we headed to the metro where we parted ways.

I had a plane to catch in the next 6 hours, and needed to get some stuff together, so we said goodbye, and I went to the hostel to see what they were up to.  I used their shower and packed up my bag for the flight, then went to the reception area to chat with Milan, the bartender.  I told him about my plans and flight, and he said I would need to leave about 3 hours before my flight.  At that time, I had 2 and a half hours!  He quickly gave me some tips, and told me to catch a cab, or I would never make it!  I got the first one I saw and told him to get me to the bus station for the airport (the airport was more than an hour bus ride away!).  I was biting my nails the whole time...and I had thought I had plenty of time!  He dropped me off at the buses, I got to the counter, bought my ticket, and got to the bus....just as they were closing the doors for the bags!  I had made it by minutes!  I got on and sighed in relief...but it still wasn't over...I still had to get to the airport on time...I only had and hour and a half, it would be close!  Besides being a bit apprehensive, the ride was nice, beautiful countryside.  Every minute clicked by with a rock to the gut, as I was constantly looking at signs for mileage, and hoping to see the runway over the next hill.  It eventually appeared, and I had a half hour left till the gate closed.  I made it.  I checked in, went through security, and made it in the terminal.  It was an uneventful hour and a half flight from Paris to Barcelona, and when I got there, I got my bag and stepped out into the crisp night air of Barcel.....oh yeah, I was still 70 km from the city.  That's Ryanair for ya...always outside the cites, but that's why it's so cheap.  It cost me less than 100€ for the whole trip...a train would have been over 200€.  Anyway, I got on another bus, got to the city, asked a cabbie for directions, and walked to my hostel in 15 minutes.  I checked in, put my bag down, and went outside to hang out with a couple Japanese guys that were staying there.  We hung out for a couple hours, just chatting, and finding out a lot about eachothers cultures...gotta love travel, I know I do:).

Hospitality knows no borders...

We continued hitching from Brussels to Paris with the same signs, but got a late start because of the night before.  We didn’t start walking until 2 in the afternoon, and it took us forever to find the right road even after we took the bus to get south of town.  We didn’t get to a good hitching spot until it was getting dark, and by that time it started to rain!  Hail came out of nowhere right next to our sweet spot, and we took refuge in a nearby shop.  We talked to the store owner whom was really cool and spoke decent English.  He gave us directions to the train station in case we couldn’t get a ride, as it was getting pretty late, but the rain subsided and the sky lit up a bit, so I decided to give it a try since we were finally at the spot.

Reactions from the people were positive as we got friendly waves and smiles as we stood with our wet signs, waiting for a ride.  It took 45 minutes for our saviors to show up, and when they did we were very grateful.  I saw the brake lights out of the corner of my eye and grabbed my bag before Loren knew what was happening.  They were holding up traffic, and I didn’t want them to have to wait any longer.  Dashing through mud puddles and traffic, we made it to the van, chucked our stuff in the back, and hopped in to meet Isabelle and her daughter.  They weren’t going to Paris, but to a small town about 20 km north of the France border…and they offered us a place to stay for the night!

The ride to their home was absolutely stunning, through small villages, rolling hills, and farmland, ending up at their ranch where they had multiple barns, and many acres where they kept donkeys for the summer camp they ran.  Isabelle showed us our beds, which were in an open bay area for the camp, the building had many of these rooms, plus a dining hall, kitchen, and bathrooms with showers…we were set!  She let us relax for a while and clean up, and told us dinner would be prepared soon!  After unloading our gear and sorting some things out, we went to the house across the courtyard and met Isabelle’s husband, Jean Mac.  He had just got home from work and was glad to have us there, treating us like family.  They were also hosting a girl from Australia for a couple months in an exchange program, so it was cool talking with her a bit.  We got a tour of the house, which was as old as it was amazing, with some modern renovations like a pool out back complete with vines hanging down in the patio area.

A dinner of sandwiches, olives, cheese, vegetables, and wine was served, and we all got to know each other better.  After a desert of fresh fruit, Jean Mac said he wanted to show me something.  We went in the house and he opened the door to his music room, complete with a 7 piece drum set, Bongos, and a Bylophone, which was like a Xylophone, except it had progressively bigger gourds underneath the wood keys to deepen the sound….a really cool concept!  I played in the room for a bit, and showed them all my Cajonito (which they liked of course:), and we went to bed by 1 as we needed to get an early start in the morning.  Saying goodbye and goodnight, we went to sleep in our warm beds, full of food, and still in shock from the whole chain of events.

The next morning we awoke about 7 o’clock, about 2 hours before we needed to leave, and Isabelle was already up and had breakfast on the table.  One thing I’ll never forget is a certain peanut buttery spread that tastes like cinnamon, and can only be found in Europe…I’m bringing some back!!  So anyway, after breakfast and loading us up with food for the road, she took us into town by the main road and dropped us off.  We said our goodbyes and thank yous, and started hitching towards Paris once again.  We were at a truck stop for a couple of hours, and had no luck, so we decided to start walking so we could gain some distance as well as increase our visibility.  After an hour and a half of walking, and crossing into France on foot, we got picked up by a lone guy, and he took us about 15 km to the next city of Lille.  From there we continued at an intersection that he said should be good.  We were there for about an hour when we saw another backpacker coming over, so we started talking to him as much as we could, as his English wasn’t very good.  He started hitching with us, and not 10 minutes later I saw two girl hitchers coming over!  So, there were five hitchhikers in one intersection, all going to Paris!  It was cool, but needless to say, crowded.  There was no way we would get picked up before the girls, and every minute there was a waste of time, so we put on our packs and started trekking down the road again.  We probably walked for a good two hours, singing, checking out different wildlife on the way, before we got picked up by two French guys our age that didn’t speak a word of English.  We pulled out the translation book to converse a bit, but our accent wasn’t there, so it was still very difficult.  They were really cool though, we just kind of talked amongst ourselves and enjoyed the free ride, plus they gave us beer!  An hour and a half down the road they dropped us off 50 km from Paris, in Amile….almost there!!  We said goodbye as best we could and continued on our trek.

Over the next couple hours we walked one way, figured out it was the wrong way, turned around, and still weren’t sure about some road signs.  It was very frustrating seeing a sign to the city for two or three different paths…which way do you take, is one shorter, closer?  While we were pondering these very questions, a car with flashing lights parked ahead of us on the shoulder.  A lady in a uniform got out and tried to converse with us in French, and needless to say, it didn’t work.  She ended up having to call someone and I talked to them.  Of course they told me that what we were doing was dangerous and illegal (even though we had 20 ft. of shoulder to walk on), and that we had to get off.  So, we did.  For a while.  We eventually got back on and sat under an overpass for about 15 minutes…and then the cops came.  The chick that first talked to us was some type of road safety officer, but now the real cops, the Gendarmerie, showed up.  They didn’t look too happy, and told us to get off the road (not in so many words).  They didn’t even get us to an exit point so we had to climb over a six foot fence on a steep hill…which was kinda fun…and figure out our next move.

We only had about an hour of daylight left, I was out of water, and we were in the middle of nowhere.  I decided we should go to a group of houses across the overpass, so we did, and as we were walking on the driveway, some cars passed us by, but they didn’t stop.  So, we continued into the compound where there were two houses, and it didn’t seem like anyone was there, it was dead quiet.  I was looking for a water spigot when I saw a tv flickering in a window.  I figured that the people inside wouldn’t mind giving me some water, so after some hesitation, we knocked.  The man who answered was of course surprised to see travellers this far in the country, and him and his wife didn’t speak much English.  With the translation guide and some hand signals though, we were able to get water, apples, cookies, and directions to a town.  We said thank you and took off for the town before it became too dark.  We walked about 2 km to the next town and tried to find some trees to string up our hammocks, but had no luck (it’s a lot harder than you’d think).  We ended up sleeping on the ground in a local park…it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either.  I wanted to clean up a bit, from the long day and walk that we had just completed, so I went searching for some water and brought my shower stuff.  I found a community building that was lit up from the inside, and the doors were open.  I looked around the outside for a spigot, as I’d rather not bother people unless I have to, but found none, so I eventually went inside.  I know that I look rather unconventional, some would even say homeless (which technically I am), so I always expect doubt when meeting people in certain situations.  This was one of those situations.  As I walked into the place I noticed that it was set up very elegantly for some reunion or reception.  I finally got the people’s attention, and proceeded to speak the little French I know, and eventually asked them if they spoke English.  One of the men spoke it very well, so it was smooth sailing from there!  I told them where I was from and where I’d been, and asked to use the bathroom to clean up a bit.  After I told them that, their attitude changed, they were welcoming and friendly.  It turned out that they were setting up for their children’s wedding reception, and the bride’s father showed me something he had made for it and told me a bit about their family, it was cool.  After I had cleaned up I said goodbye and headed back to the park where Loren was already asleep, with a cat we had found, was curled up next to him:)

We awoke with the sun, to the crisp, cool, morning air the next day.  We had no idea what we were going to do, or how we were going to do it...just the way I like it!  Regardless, we were meaning to be in Paris about 5 days before, so we were a little antsy to get there!  We ate some breakfast and packed up our gear, and after doing some jumping jacks to warm up a bit, we hit the road.  We got back on the main road we got kicked off of the day before, and continued our trek.  We weren't walking for 2 hours, when, at the next exit down, we could see some very stern looking officers looking our way....here we go.  We just kept walking towards them, knowng exactly what they would say, and thinking of our next move.  We met up with them, and sure enough, ''Too dangerous.'', ''You can't do this.''.  From there they called some people and figured out what to do.  They ended up putting us in their car, and driving us....to Paris!  Just kidding, but they did drive us down a couple exits to a little city with a train station.  From there, we were just ready to get to Paris, so we got some tickets for 20€, and got on our way...Paris, here we come!

Thumbs, signs, and Brazilians...

So, hitchhiking...is usually looked at as scary or dangerous, right?  But how many of you reading this right now, have ever tried either end of it?  Well, now I've done both, and they are equally amazing!
Loren and I got an early start from Antwerpen, and got on the road to Paris.  We actually got a ride to the intersection we should be at from a nice guy who was on his way back home to Morroco, and started the real hitch.  We stood on a two way island with stoplights (for a better chance), and didn't get anything but smiles for an hour, then a guy told us to try across the road for more results.  We did, and actually just kept walking on the main road (you would call this an interstate in the states:), and walked about 2 km, when Loren spotted a car stopping, and just started running!  I saw the car, and we ran about 50 m to the trunk where the guy was moving things to the side for our bags.  We threw them in as quick as we could, and got in and introduced ourselves as we pulled back on the main road.  There was a man, Grafitie, and a woman, Christina, which actually suprised me, but she was really cool with it.  They both spoke English, Christina better, and French.  Grafitie was Brazilian, so he spoke that language as well, but between the two of them, they mainly spoke French as it's just more comfortable for them.

So, they told us they were going to Brussels, Belgium, and could take us there, unless we wanted to go somewhere else...  Our plans were to get to Paris, but he said he would give us a tour of the city, and take us to his house for dinner, so we couldn't say no!  It took about an hour to get to the city, and on the way they gave us food and drink, and Grafitie turned out to be a music composer!  He gave us a card and later showed us his website.  When we got to town the first thing he showed us was the NATO building, as Brussels is the Capital of the European Union.  He drove us around the city for a bit, seeing the buildings from the car, and then he took us to his apartment (which was the nicest I'd been in yet) to meet his family.  He has a little boy, Gabriel, a daughter, Annita, and his wife, Anna whom was also from Brazil.  They are a warm, loving family that treated us like family as soon as we walked in!  We didn't stay at the house very long as Gabriel had a check up to go to.  So, all 7 of us piled in the little car, and went to drop off Anna and Gabriel.  From there, we went to the Belgium king's mansion, which is stunning to say the least, but way too much for one person!  I couldn't even take pictures, so I'm sorry guys, you'll just have to go yourself!  We started pretending that we lived there, saying that this room was for the guests, and that room was for Wednesdays, and that we'd never even been in this room before.  After that, we walked around a bit, seeing some beautiful architecture, the city spread wide before us.  We went by a tattoo shop that caught my eye, as it was filled with polynesian artwork, and I went in to look at their stacks of books!  Annita got some driving lessons, we got some ice cream, and we all had a history lesson of the city.  We went to check into a hostel shortly after, and Grafitie taking us everywhere we needed to go (and trust me, it sucks to drive in that city).  After we got a room we all went back to the house and he left us there with his family while he went to the market.  We used the internet and got some appetizers and drinks while we waited for dinner.  After Grafitie got back we all ate an amazing dinner of pasta and salad and wine!  I shared pictures with them, showing them my family and where I come from, then we went on Google Earth and pinpointed where we all grew up.  I thought the night was over, but Grafitie still wasn't done!  Everyone except Anna piled in the car once again and headed out to see the Brussels nightlife.  We drove all over Brussels, seeing a lot of the same buildings we saw during the day, all lit up (the way to see things in Europe!).  The next thing was a suprise.  We were driving for some time on a highway, away from the city, and there it was....The Atomium.  One of the greatest things I have ever seen in my life!  It's been around more than 50 years, and was built for the Brussels World Fair...Wikipedia it! We left there and drove around a bit more before getting dropped off at our hostel, saying goodbye and farewell to our hosts.

The next morning we left the hostel to check into a different one.  I didn't like it because it was set up to be unsocial.  The rooms didn't have many people in them, the common areas closed early, and breakfast was too...military like...and I've had enough of that!  So, we found another hostel through a local tourist place called 'use it'.  It had free internet, maps, and coffee!  We made it to our new place, checked in, took showers, and hung out for a bit, figuring out what to do.  We heard that the Brussels music festival was going on for the next couple nights...so that's where I was going!  So, after inviting some girls to come along, we headed out for the concert!  We made it to the free stage and sat down to listen to a couple bands.  We met an Italian guy named Vittorio whom was staying with his uncle in Brussels, and started chatting with him a bit.  The next band that came on was pretty good, nice lighting and sound, but what was really entertaining was a drunk Indian guy with a funny hat, dancing all over the place, trying to talk to girls...it was great!  When the next band came on it seemed like someone hit a lightswitch cause everyone stood up and walked up to the stage...and after the show, I could see why.  These guys were entertainers!  Their name was 'The Holograms', and they loved to dress up and jump around, the singer probably knew 5 languages!  After that show, Loren and I left, planning on meeting up with the girls at a bar after we ate.

....However, we didn't get but 1000 m from the concert when I heard drumming....and my legs followed:).  It turned out to be 3 morrocan guys and a local street performer (statuing) playing two Djembes!  I said hi and they saw I was interested, so they let me jam out with them!  We stayed for an hour just hanging out and playing, plus I talked to the local guy, Rusty, for a while, getting tips on styles and techniques.  He was really talented and I learned a lot from him.  From there, we headed out to the bar to meet up with Vittorio and the girls, with Rusty in tow, telling us about a pilgrimage he did across Spain.  We made it to the sacred bar...The Delirium!  This bar has over 2000 beers, and 25 of those on tap...that's right ladies and gentlemen...25!!  And not one of those were budweiser thank god!

Rusty ended up leaving early as he had things to do, but we stayed for quite a while, meeting up with everyone we said we would.  I got cozy with a Hefeweisen, and Loren started trying his crazy cactus and bannana beers.  I started talking to a guy sitting beside me, and he asked what I was doing in Belgium.  I told him I just got out of the Army and he said that was in right now.  He asked me job and I told him.  He said he was the same... He said he was stationed at Ft. Bragg but was on R&R from Afghanistan.....ok, getting weird.  Then I told him what company I was in, and he said that he was in Delta company, but was attached to mine!  His name was Jason, and our night was set!  We stayed up till 3, talking about people we knew, stupid Army stuff, and life in general, it was so cool!  How small the world is!  We took some pictures and he said that he would post them up in the office when he got back to Afghanistan.  The night grew long, and we were hitting the road in the morning, so we bid adieu, and stumbled back to the room....ready to continue our hitch to Paris in the (late)morning!

A new country, a new opportunity!

Antwerpen is amazing! I´m just going to put this out there right now...Belgium, is amazing! The whole country! After Fred dropped us off at our hostel, we said goodbye, and walked inside to check in. We didn´t have a reservation, so I hopped they would have room! They did, so we checked in, and dropped our bags off, and in that time, I met a guy named John in our room. He was currently in the Navy, so we clicked pretty well when I told him what I did. Used to do. Never will again! I´m so happy I´m out!!! Ok. Sorry....Anyway, we chatted a bit, and decided to check out the city together. So, after some lunch, we headed out to discover Antwerpen. Some festival was going on that day, so it was pretty busy with street performers, and street sales, plus we got in this amazing church for free (they usually charge for it, for the art). We hung out and had some of the local beer and pastries, and watched some breakdancers perform. We got some frozen pizza for a quick lunch/dinner, and found out there was no oven, so we pan fried it...which works well as I´ve used it since! While we were eating we met all sorts of people, like 4 Canadians whom were traveling together, and 5 brits that were in our room. The owners of the place were really cool too, some of the best yet! The lounge area where we ate our pizza was really dim (almost too much), but it made for a relaxed environment. We played a lot of chess in that room!

As the sun went down we decided to go out and see the nightlife, so we rounded up another guy we met, and went out. We walked to the water where a lot of bars and shops are, and we could hear, all the way across the water (2 km´s away), a festival that had been going on most the day. I had to get there! There were lights and lasers, and big tv screens, and music, beautiful music! We stood across the water just listening, and I seriously considered swimming across! I did. I started to pull my phone and wallet out of my pocket for Loren to hold, when, one of the guys found an underwater tunnel on the map. It was like a godsend...or just brillant architechure! So, we proceeded to find this jewel, and walked the 2 K underwater, and got out on the other side, right beside the concert! Once I saw this, people had to keep up, and I told them, if we get seperated, I´d see them tommorow morning! It didn´t take long for me to get to the front, and stay there all night, I was in heaven! I only got to see two artists and a DJ, and I stayed the longest of anyone, but it was great! I got back to the hostel about 2, and stayed up another 2 hours talking to a guy from Siberia...maybe the only one I´ll meet traveling, the way he talked! They can´t even leave their country without a visa! The U.N. bombed them for months straight, killing thousands of innocents! He told me a lot I didn´t know, he was young, but knew a lot of history and geography. I guess that´s what happens when you live somewhere that everything isn´t sugarcoated...consider yourself lucky, for everything.

The next day, the hostel had an amazing breakfast of meat, cheese, bread, nutella (look it up!), cereal, and juice...pretty good for 2.50! I went back to bed after breakfast, to catch up on some needed sleep! Waking back up about 1, we hung out with the Canadians, and then decided to go outside for a bit, walking to the East side of town, to the Morrocan area. On the way, we stopped to watch a skate comp, sponsored by Red Bull, it was pretty cool! We picked up some fish and veggies for dinner from the Morrocans...I had a plan! From there, we headed back to the hostel to put the food away. I had seen a bar with an advertisement of Sunday Blues, so we went over there and I went in, but Loren didn´t think it was worth it, so he went back. I really enjoyed the shows, talking to the musicians afterwards, and flirting with the bartender. One of the guitarists asked me if I played (just randomly), and I said yes, so he told the barkeep...I guess it was open mic night! I didn´t play, but I could have if I would have known about it earlier! Oh well.

I went back to the hostel and cooked dinner. Fish with potatoes, peppers, onions, and garlic! Amazing! Just ask Loren:) After that, we cleaned up and hung out in the lounge. I started talking about going to the ¨100 beers bar¨, and it caught on to a lot of people. Everyone got ready, and before I knew it...no shit...I was beating my Cajonito like a war drum, in front of 14 people, going to the bar!! It was so awesome, I hope someone got a picture! We made it without too many wrong turns, and invaded the place, taking over the whole inside! The bar was really cool, with so many different kinds of beer to try, from sweet to bitter, to just plain weird! We were all trying eachothers, seeing what our next one would, and would not be! I ended up leaving by 2, and stumbling home with Loren, but waking up the next...afternoon...I found out that a lot of people went yet to another bar till 5 or 6!

The next day, I decided to do a couple things I´d been meaning to do...see some sites not too often seen! Every major city in Belgium has these awesome, local made, maps. They tell you about quirky, cool things to see and do. The first one was a fry museum, like french fries as we know them. It wasn´t so much a museum as an upstairs dining room of a local restaraunt, but it was covered in really cool ideas for fry holders, which are cone shaped here. Anything from digital fries, to sexual jokes, to a frog with his tongue all the way around the cone, ending up with a fry...pretty neat:), and where else can you see something like that?

Something else we did that day was see a ¨graffiti-plein¨, basically a park that graffiti is legal, and beautiful! There were whole buildings, four stories up, covered in one piece! We also talked to a local there whom had lived in the states for a long time, but liked Belgium better...I didn´t argue! We headed back to the hostel shortly after, and after hanging out in the lounge for a bit, playing chess and listening to music, I decided to split for a while and bang on my drum in the park.

I went around the corner from the hostel, and there was the park. I found a nice lit bench to sit on, and started playing, trying different styles and beats. It didn´t take long for Loren to come up behind me with his big mischevious grin...I heard him in the bushes! He had brought the Canadians along, and they started playing frisbee. They got bored soon enough, and started chasing these rabbits that were all around! There must have been hundreds of them in the park! I eventually joined in, and not long after we were blinded by lights of an incoming car...in the park! It was a police van...I knew it! They weren´t very happy, and they didn´t speak English. I was the spokesman, and tried to convince them we weren´t going to harm the rabbits...he looked at my Cajonito with suspicion:). The funniest thing they said though was,¨What are you going to do when you catch the rabbits?¨....I really didn´t know what to say to that. So, they just said the park was closed, and we needed to go home. We did.

When we got back to the hostel, I figured the night was over...but the guy that answered the door got more than a little excited at the sight of my drum. He had a guitar with him!! Late night jam session! We played for 45 minutes, until it got too late, but it was great!

The next day, we were leaving Antwerpen, sadly...but we wanted to get on the road and see new countries! We said farewell to the owners and friends we´d made, and with the signs I´d made the night before, from cardboard and markers...we hitchhiked to Paris...well 50 km north of Paris...so stay tuned!

Stop number 2...Tillburg.

So...where was I? Oh yeah, the train to Tillburg, Netherlands...

We got on, rode for a couple hours through the countryside of Holland, which looks a lot like the states, plains, crops, cows, trees...it´s not Mars, people! When we got there, I let our host,(Couchsurfing) Fred, know that we were there by text message. Once we got in the terminal it didn´t take long to hook up with him. We introduced ourselves, and he led us to his car, got our stuff in there, and on to his house we went.

Tillburg is a really small town in the South of the Netherlands (Holland), and we decided to go there to get a feel of the Country, instead of just the tourisim of Amsterdam.

Fred´s apartment was fairly spacious, two bedroom, one bath, little balcony. We picked up some food on the way, and I cooked dinner...chili con carne, for the first time. It turned out good, pretty much red beans and rice. We spent the evening just talking and getting to know eachother, and using the internet. I found out Fred is a big metal-head, just like me, and has been to a festival called ´Waken´, a couple times. It´s in Germany, and a lot of big bands go there. He´s going to see Rammstein later this year...I´m jealous! After that, we went to bed, me on the couch, and Loren in the spare bedroom...although I ended up on the floor in the spare later that night because there was a misquito that was eating me alive!!

The next day we got up pretty early as Fred had to be gone for work by 8. I didn´t mind though, I like early mornings, and it made us get up and start the day early. Fred made coffee...and not that dinky espresso they like so much over here!! After that, we waited at the bus stop by his house to get a ride into town. The first one passed us by like we weren´t there, but I guess you have to stand up to say that you want on...whatever, I wasn´t in a hurry. The next one came and we got on and went to town. We rode to the park on the East of town, and just hung out. We strung out our hammocks, I broke out my Cajonito, and we just chilled all day in the park. People walked by and gave us funny looks, but said hello, they´re nice enough. When it started getting later, we decided to head to town. We just walked around, looking at the shops and little bit of architechure they have. We went to the library after that to play a couple games of giant chess. These pieces went up to our thighs, it was cool.

We took a break to get some free coffee, and started talking to a guy that was doing the same. He was from Georgia, the country, not the state. His name was Alexander, and he was really cool, he wanted to tell us all about his country, and I was all ears. He had broken English, but we got through a really good conversation. About that time, Fred texted me, telling us that he was off work, and he would meet us at a nearby bar. We said goodbye to Alex, and headed out...and got lost. We roamed around for half an hour, with Fred texting us every five minutes, trying to give us directions (minutes are really expensive), and we just got more lost. He ended up meeting us at the corner we told him, and we were at the totally wrong place! He led us back to where we were supposed to be...and passed the library...and it was right around the corner from it! Oh well. We got some drinks, looked around town at the stuff we missed, including a music store (cd´s), and an instrument store. After that, we called it a night and went home. This time Loren slept on the couch, he said he didn´t mind.

The next morning went similar as the first, except instead of taking the bus, we walked to town...it only took an hour. It really showed us the Dutch lifestyle also. We stopped in the local ¨Centrum¨ which is basically a center of the city with shops and banks. We stopped in the bakery for a pastry and coffee. She didn´t serve coffee, but gave me some anyway...I guess I just have some charm:). After that we tried to figure out my card situation as I´m not able to recharge my Eurocard except over the phone...really annoying! It´s a good idea though, as I´m not charged a transaction fee to change from dollars to euros everytime!
So, we walked to town, picking wild blackberries along the way, which were very plentiful! Looking at really nice houses, and getting a feel for how the Dutch live their daily lives, which is very much like our own. When we got to town we went back to the library for a couple more games of chess, and Alexander was there! He once again was excited to share some history, and this time, newspapers from Georgia, with us. After our games we went to meet up with Fred...not getting lost this time, to eat dinner. We picked a mexican style restaraunt, and got some really good, but small food. I got some delicious fish, Loren some quesadillas, and Fred got Chorizo, all that with a very different beer with syrup in it! It was very sweet. Afterwards, we went to Fred´s house where another friend of his was at already. We met him and just hung out the whole night at the house...not much to Tillburg´s night life anyway...
We got some sleep because the next day we were all going to Antwerpen, and Fred was dropping us off! How awesome is that?

Home is where you make it!

Amsterdam, Netherlands was my first stop in Europe....and it was great! My first day there, I met my buddy, Loren Hickerson at the airport, and we took the train into the city. He had been there a couple days before me, so he showed me what he had found so far. We checked in at a hostel, the first for both of us, and decided what to do from there. We stayed in Amsterdam for a good 6 days, and in those days I think we got a pretty good feel for the city. It's always moving, we met at least 5 people from every country in Western Europe, Aussies, South Americans, and even a few from the States:). The hostels are a great way to meet people, get a group together, and go out for the night! In A'dam we saw the Van Gogh museum, the Rijk museum, we rented bikes for two days to get around the city (there are literally millions of bikes in this city), we made it to the west side of the city where it is a different world. A lot of muslim immigrants live there, it's newer, but bland, a totally different culture.

We've also couchsurfed with two locals in A'dam! (couchsurfing is a hospitality website where you request to sleep on people's couches. It's an amazing cultural exchange, and I usually return the favor in dinner or a gift from the states:) The first guy was named Joris, and he had lived in the Netherlands his whole life. We met at a couchsurfing meeting at a local bar, and I bought him a beer, and we had a place to sleep! I also met a lot of other people that night that I still keep in touch with. That night Joris hosted Loren and I plus two other people, an Aussie, and a Finnish guy. The apartment wasn't that big either, we slept beside eachother on the floor that night (we had matresses though:). When we woke up the next day, all the guests headed out to see the city a bit, but Joris had stuff to take care of so he stayed home.

The Aussie we were with was a street performer, he breathed fire:), and we were trying to see one of his shows later on. We just walked around the city that day, stopping off in a coffee shop for the Finnish guy cause he wanted to smoke (coffee shop in Netherlands is weed, cafe is coffee:). It was actually his first time ever to smoke, and he did too much, so we ended up having to take him somewhere he could sleep it off and get some water. He was as white as a ghost! We walked him to a park and let him sleep while we just did some people watching. The park was really big and nice, people biking and running all over, playing music, drinking, hanging out. Really chill.

From there I went to the Rijk museum with spanish girl that I met, she was just in town for the day and wanted to see some sites. It's an amazing art museum with a lot of Rembrant, including a huge piece called "The Night Watch", which I've wanted to see for a long time. She left within an hour, and I stayed till they closed, then met up with Dingo (the aussie:), and Loren for some dinner and drinks. That night, we went to another CS meeting, and saw a lot of the same people, it was so cool! That's where the picture of the big group came from. That night I met another Finnish guy (they're everywhere!) and requested a couch. We just met, but I threw it out there. By the end of the night and many drinks later we had a place to stay, and he wanted to go out after the bar closed to go dancing with some girls we met there! So, we went to his place, which was smaller than the first, dropped our stuff off, and went back out! We made it to a club and danced until 4, then went back to his place to have some Finnish vodka shots...and then finally made it to bed when the sun reared it's bright head!

The next day, Mika made some breakfast and we headed out to see some more of the city. From there we headed to another hostel to stay a couple more nights, and found a really nice one called Bob's. It's a really chill place with a bar and lounge downstairs (but no kitchen!). We met a lot of people there including a couple german girls and a guy, and ended up hanging outside the hostel talking all night. I went to bed first, and went to the room, got all ready to lie down...and that's when the weirdness happened...people with chainsaws and masks came in the room, took me away, and threw me down the stairs into a dark basement! They shut the door and I started hearing growling and snarling...and then I woke up to realize it was just a dream, but the snarling was real! There was a really creepy French guy walking around the room, laughing to himself, snorting, and he was as high as a kite. He kept walking around the room, making noise, taking a shower at three in the morning...eventually I got up and told him to go to bed or leave cause he was keeping everybody up! He went to his bed, but the snorting and laughing continued... needless to say I didn't sleep well that night. The German girls wouldn't even sleep in the same room! (That was the ONLY experience I've had like that though...and I've been traveling for 3 weeks now). The next couple days were spent at the hostel (the French guy left though:), and we rented the bikes, saw the city, architecture, food, culture, and it was great!

We made it to one of the best views of the city, and no one would think of it...the library. We go to libraries quite a bit for the free internet, but this one was amazing! 9 floors. 9. It had escalators and elevators, and you had to walk the last floor to the top...and then saw the whole city! Anyone who goes to A'dam has to hit up this spot! From the internet we threw a couple CS requests out to some Tillburg (southern netherlands) people, and got a response within a day. His name was Fred and we would meet up in the next couple days. Meanwhile, we talked to Mika again, and he said we could stay another night! Well, this time we got some food from the grocery store, and met up with him for dinner. His place was smaller that Joris's, but he hosted us AND a Finnish girl that night! We made pasta which turned out great, had wine, and went outside by the canals to hang out where I played my new percussion instrument! I got a Cajonito, which is a smaller version of a Cajon. It's a percussion box you can sit on, and it has snare strings on one side, and different wood block sounds on the opposite sides. You play with your hands, and it's very portable! I played for half an hour, and then we went back in to hang out and exchange some music, getting to bed by 4:).

The next day we had a train to catch from A'dam to Tillburg, but had some time to kill. We ended up going to a science museum, and looked around for a while at a lot of robot and technology stuff, pretty neat. I guess all that walking and biking caught up to me though, cause my knee started swelling up on me! I've had trouble with it before from a small ACL tear, and it felt the same, so I was really worried about the future of my trip! We ended up leaving the museum and turning in our bikes, then picking up our bags from the hostel and were going to walk back to the train station, but I stopped by Asian massage/acupunture place. I showed them my knee and asked if they thought they could help. I've never done acupunture before...but it was very interesting. Basically, they find pressure points on the part you're having trouble on, clean it real good, and put needles in you on those points....I thought that was it, but then, they hook up a small amount of voltage to the needles! It was pretty wild when my muscles started moving like a heart, pumping. I got done with that, which was relaxing and what I hoped would help, and we headed to the train station. We waited a while for the train, sitting down for my knee, and got on for Tillburg.... (my knee's better by the way:)

Back to my roots.

After leaving Joplin, I jumped over to Pierce City, MO to see my Great Aunt Darlene. She has about 5 chihuahuas and a couple puppies. We went out to eat some mexican food and had a good time visiting and showing pictures to each other.

From there I headed west to Lawrence, KS to see a couple long time friends. Phillip Schindler was the first to see. I went to his house and put my bags down for a while, it had been a long time on the road, and it started to feel like I was getting home. We hung out for a couple days, catching up, and visiting my other good buddy, Jim Brothers. Jim is an amazing sculptor, internationally known. More than that though, he is a generous, intelligent, and kind host. We had a barbecue with him the first night I was in town, and the next day he met us at an art display that he shared with another artist. I ended up buying a 1972 Dodge Dart from his friend Kathy (whom is also an amazing person), and was stoked on the possibilities for the car! It is a dark green color with a white fabric top, straight 6 cyl., and only has 69,000 original miles!

While in Lawrence I also spent some time with my highschool buddy, Danny Mainus. I hadn't seen him for years, but we fell right back in where we left off. He is training in jujitsu and MMA, and has a sponsored fight coming in October. He's also owned a couple Darts and was excited to see me get one!

After Lawrence I went down I-70 to my hometown of Colby, KS. It was a good drive and made me realize how beautiful Kansas really is, I have missed it. I got to Colby and met my mom at City Limits to get some dinner. We hadn't seen each other for about 6 months...but I guess that's not unusual for us;). We ate and caught up, and then went out for a drink, me inviting a couple other people out while we were there. Kayla Foltz, Bernie, Hope, and Robyn Schmid, and also Kevin Stolz (my mom's boyfriend) came out. We had a good time and eventually everyone had to leave because they had to do something called work...I'm still trying to figure out what that is, but no luck so far:). I hung around Colby for a couple days, staying with my friend, Magnum Shea; roaming around my old stomping grounds, looking for trouble, and meeting up with old friends.

One opportunity that I didn't expect while in Colby, was a concert in Denver. Tool is a band I've always wanted to see, and my buddy was going to see them, so I just hitched a ride with him and a girlfriend of his. I figured, I'm free, why not?!? We went to Ft. Collins and stayed with some friends of friends, went out that night barhopping, and I got a couple hours sleep on the couch, it was great! The next day we went to the concert after prying our eyes open and downing a gallon of water! It was actually a huge festival with a lot of great bands, including, Tool, Incubus, Ben Harper, The Black Keys, Paolo Nutini, and Widespread Panic...quite a line up! That night I slept on the floor in another persons house that I didn't know, just getting used to it I guess! We headed back to Colby the next day and I drove, getting out of a speeding ticket because of my military ID...I guess it still serves a purpose!

I went to Dodge City for a couple days to see my Uncle Larry, whom was in the middle of a divorce and needed a friend. I got to his house and I could tell he needed a distraction, so we hung out for while, and he mentioned going fishing...I got him ready for an all out camping trip in one hour, bags packed, on the road! We got out to a lake that he knew outside of town, and it was dark by the time we got there, but it was an experience! We got the poles out, threw some spinners on and just started casting into the dark. Lightning was crackling through the sky, showing us all the moss that was tying up our lines, and even the other side of the lake, which was about a mile away! The storm eventually overtook us, and we took refuge in his Ford Ranger, enjoying the storm! It lasted over an hour, and it was an amazing hour, a huge reason I miss Kansas so much! We didn't stay for the whole storm, instead, we took off to another lake (at 1 in the morning) to try our luck there! The next place was dry enough to lay the tent down and start a fire, which was all cedar and about set the forest on fire from all its popping! After inspecting some rustling noises by our campsite with a 500,000 candlelight spot, and seeing a raccoon at about 3 in the morning, we were ready to hit the proverbial (and in this case literal) sack.

I got woken up about 5 hours later by Larry dangling a fish in front of my face asking me if I "want some breakfast?"...uhhhh, where am I? I was tired, but got up for the real breakfast he made of eggs and bacon, and thank god, coffee. We broke down our camp and headed to the lake that had the storm the night before. Upon getting there, we found the boat ramp blocked off by the fish and game trucks! Well I guess Larry knew a couple of them, and he sent some texts, giving em' a hard time. They came over and bs'd a bit before letting us in. They were out there getting a population count of the lake. The way they do this is lowering electrified probes into the water at different spots, shocking the fish to come to the top. They get a count and measurement of each, and do this all over the lake. I think they have an equation they plug the numbers into, and that's how they figure up the numbers...pretty cool.

We fished for a couple hours, switching off and on his one person pontoon boat that's powered by flippers. It's a pretty neat boat that can move pretty fast and small enough to fit in his bed. We didn't catch anything out there, but it sure was a beautiful day! We went back to his place to shower and recharge, and I took his 1500 Kawasaki Vulcan for a ride! It's a nice bike that can pull it's weight, and it felt real good to get out in the wind! I rode for about and hour and just let Larry have some time to himself. That night we had a barbecue at his place and just relaxed, going over some ideas he had for a studio, as he is an amazing sculptor also.

My next destination was Garden City, but not before I visited my Aunt Francis and Uncle Wayne in Ingalls. I stopped by their house for a couple hours to visit and see their home improvements. They are also storing my stuff for me while I embark on this journey, which I am very thankful for! I showed them a couple plaques that were sent to their house with my things. One was an appreciation plaque from my company in the Army for my service. It has a drawing of a Blackhawk helicopter and some patches and rank on the border, plus a nice inscription. The other plaque was a painting of a mission that my company executed in Afghanistan, and it is beautifully done!

Garden City was just a short drive from Ingalls, and I met my Grandparents at Sammy's for happy hour. My Aunt Roxie was also there and my Uncle Kevin and his Wife, Mary. We had some free appetizers and a couple drinks before splitting off and half of us left and the other half went to the restaurant side to get some dinner. It was basically Me...and Kevin and Mary's whole family! Those girls are growing up too fast, some even have kids of their own! Kendra's kid, Blake, is almost a year old, and crawling all over the place! Well, we ate some dinner and then headed out to their place to hang out some more. I ended up staying the night because most of the girls would be gone in the morning for the rodeo and I wanted to see them. I saw their horses and trailers they would be taking the next day, plus all their cats running around...they must have 30 cats out there!

The next day I saw them off, and I went to town to see my Great Grandma Wanetta, and some cousins of mine. My cousin Holly met up with Me, Tina, Roxie, and Grandma at the nursing home. We visited for a while and took some pictures of her wearing Tina's, Ed Hardy glasses:). A couple days later, the cousins, grandma, grandpa, and I were going to go out for dinner at Las Margaritas, but my grandfather's son called him giving him some bad news about some cancer that came back. Needless to say, all of us were devastated, and the Grandparents didn't go out to eat, but all the cousins and I still made it. Besides starting out on a solemn note, the dinner progressed into a fun evening. I hadn't seen a couple of them, or their kids for a long time, and they were growing like weeds! Most of us went to my cousin Stephanie's house afterwards for a couple drinks. My second cousins, Issac and Alex, started showing me a lizard that they had caught, and the conversation moved to fishing. Before I knew it, I told them that I'd like to take them fishing...and then it progressed to "tomorrow"! Well...the next day, Bryce and I took them fishing:). It was a blast too, of course! We didn't do so much fishing as we did "netting". Little minnows and frogs, throwing them in a cooler Alex had brought. I showed the kids where I could see the little fish, and they went out on some rocks to get them. Then Alex fell in the lake! Before I knew it, he was in his boxers swimming around, then another kid, then another! They just started swimming, and then here comes Bryce around the corner..."well I guess they're riding in the back". We took them to the river down the road after that, and they continued to swim and look for fish. After about an hour of exploration, we headed home with the sun.

Many mornings after that, Grandma and I would go to Brew Bakers for coffee in the morning, and back an hour later for lunch:). Her Brother Bobby, Sister Connie, and her husband, Presley, came over to the house for a couple nights. They barely recognized me when I showed up, I guess it's been a while! I also went to visit my Aunt Jane, and Uncle Raymond at their house. My Uncle Joe, and his wife Sabrina, plus my Aunt Debra and her daughter Lindee were there! We had a barbecue, and caught up over lunch. I think I scared Debra and Jane a little bit about my plan to backpack (I even threw in some hitchhiking references for em':).

One day in Garden was one of the most memorable. The day I went to work with my Grandpa on his tree spade truck. He was in good spirits as he got some good news about his son, a second and third opinion didn't see what the first did...we're still waiting for the test results. We woke up early one morning and headed to Scott City, about an hour away to move 8 trees. We got into town and found the removal site, which used to have a house on the property. From there, we went to the feeder farm they were going to. We talked to the guy, and figured out where he wanted the first couple trees and what kind. We tore a couple trees up by his house that he didn't want there and planted them a ways from the house. The concept was simple, dig a hole, fill in another hole with that dirt, pick up a tree, plant it, repeat. It made for a fun day with my gramps, and a learning experience. My favorite part was trucking down the highway at 70 mph with a tree on the back of the truck, it's branches fanning out from the wind...and it started getting in the opposite lane! I saw this, and told him about it, but not before it whacked a semi-truck right in the windshield! Soon after, he was getting cussed out on the CB radio! I thought it was pretty humorous, but suggested that we move on the shoulder a little bit. We got all the trees moved without too much difficulty, or injury, and got home by 6 that night.

The last day in Garden I bought all my second cousins gifts. I feel like an uncle:). It wasn't easy buying kids gifts either...I was hoping the whole time that they would like them, and actually get some use! I got some super soakers (which I used to love!), some stuffed animals for the little ones, a slip and slide, and my favorite...a time capsule to bury and not dig up for years! After being Santa for a couple minutes (I even have the beard for it!), I had to say goodbye.

I went to Colby once again and saw my buddy Lucas Moore and his wife and daughter. Jalyn is his 5 year old daughter, and I love her so much! She is a ball of energy, and I know Luke is glad to give her away for an hour or two:). We went to the local fair and I took her on a couple rides that she could scream to her heart's content on! My mom came out also, and it's always good seeing her! We walked around a bit, and she took a ride with her boyfriend :P, then we went to get coffee cause it was kinda chilly. Once we parted we didn't see each other for a couple days, cause now she was going to Garden City! We just couldn't stay around each other!

I spent my last couple days in Colby just relaxing and getting all my affairs in order, making sure I had everything for Europe. I stayed at Luke's house and we BBQ'd, swam with Jalyn in his pool, and rode motorcycles...it doesn't get much better than that! I also hung out quite a bit with Ben Jurek and his family. They have been part of my family for a long time, and mean the world to me. Ben has been to Australia and lived in Oregon for a year, just because he wanted to see what it was like. That's the kind of attitude I like, and strive to be like myself. You may not always know what's around the corner...but that shouldn't make you stay in the same spot your whole life!

The last night in Colby, we had a...can you guess? Yes! A BBQ! It's summer time, what other way is there to cook?!? We went to Kevin's house and Magnum, Jasmine, their kids, Tammy, and Frank Jurek, and of course my mom were there. I was on the grill (which was difficult with the flesh eating geese at my backside!), and Tammy and mom were in the kitchen. Add some cold beer, and we had a great time!

The next day, mom and I got everything we needed for the road, and headed to Colorado. And that's where I sit right now...in Fountain, CO, ready to leave for Denver Intl. Airport in the morning. Amsterdam is my destination, and a one way ticket is my transportation.

Wish me luck, cause that's all I'm bringing with me! (and of course a toothbrush!)

Freedom...still going strong!

After leaving Joplin, I jumped over to Pierce City, MO to see my Great Aunt Darlene. She has about 5 chihuahuas and a couple puppies. We went out to eat some mexican food and had a good time visiting and showing pictures to each other.

Freedom:IV

I took off from Corpus on the morning of July 2nd and headed an hour and half north to San Antonio for the Van's Warped tour. The tour is a festival of Rock and Punk music, about 40 bands at each stop, merchandise stands, a half pipe to skate on, and some of the craziest outfits you've ever seen! I had about 6 bands that I really wanted to see (Saosin, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, InnerPartySystem, Thrice, Senses Fail, and I Set My Friends on Fire), and my friend Shelly that met me there had her list to see. We met each other inside the gate and planned out our day. We split up to see the bands we wanted, met back up in the cooling building (it was 103 degrees!) for a break and some food and water, and then back out for another band or two.
I got a band's autographs that I'd been wanting to meet for a while (Saosin), and then at the end of the day I saw one of my fav bands, Thrice. After their show, I waited outside the gate to catch them, and sure enough I saw the drummer! I went to talk to him for a sec and snapped a pic. Then the lead singer came out and I was so stoked to talk to him! I took a pic and let him get out of there...I could tell he was exhausted! After that, Bad religion came on and put on the final show, which was awesome for being the oldest people there! We left shortly after and met at Shelly's house in Austin. She wanted me to go to this theater that serves you food and drinks like a restaraunt, so we headed out with her boyfriend....even though I was exhausted and dehydrated from the whole day! But, we went, and we watched "Public Enemies", which wasn't worth it...but the theater was cool. Anywhere you can have a burger and beer and badass waitresses is good in my book!

Freedom: Part 3

Corpus Christi, TX is a beautiful place, and I was actually a bit south of there on Padre Island. I was visiting two old Army friends who live together, one works on helicopters and the other works at Toys r' us. Quite a contrast, but they just do what they do and are loving life outside the military. It was pretty inspiring going to visit them...there is so much out there, and to resrict ourselves to one organization, place, person, entity, is foolish!
While in CC I marine fished, surfed, kayaked, and did everything else the town had to offer. There are about 280,000 people in the city of Corpus, but it doesn't have a big city feel. My friends had an apartment in a nice location, just a walk to the water. They are currently in the process of buying a 40 ft. sailboat and are going to live in it, at the marina. It's two bedroom, two bath, kitchen, everything they need, plus they can pick up and move it at any time! I didn't get to see the boat, but the 5 nights I spent there were some of the most memorable I've had!

Freedom:Part Dos

From there I went north to Shreveport, LA to see an old Army buddy I hadn't seen for a couple years. His name is Danny Coleman and we met at Airborne School. He works off shore as a chef and it worked out that he would have the next week off! He showed me around the big city of Shreveport, we went to the horse races and casino, played drums (he's amazing!), went to his sister's house for dinner one night, and just caught up on old times. Then, for my birthday (June 26th) we went to New Orleans for a couple days! Let me tell you, it was one of the best b-days ever! The streets are packed with people, music is flowing out of the buildings, no cover charges, paintings for sale, horse rides, restaraunts, bars, clubs, beads, nightlife, it's amazing! We stayed at some pretty old, fancy hotels and after some late nights we went for a swim in their pool. After getting back to Shreveport we picked up 5 lbs of crawdads each and proceeded to have a good ol' Louisiana meal! I stayed one more night to get some sleep (cause I sure didn't get any in Nawlins!), and then headed west to Texas.

Freedom!!

Hey, this is my first post...and it shouldn't be.
I got out of the Army about a month ago, and since then have been traveling around the states. So far I've been to Maryland, all the way south to Louisiana, over to Texas, and I'll be heading up to Missouri to spend fourth of July weekend camping! When I say that this shouldn't be my first post, I mean that I should have written sooner. I should have told all you that I went up to Maryland from North Carolina the day I got out of the Army to be a groomsman at my friend, Brett Woodard's wedding. I should have told you that we went kayaking and had to climb over a beaver dam to get to more water and continue our exploration. I should have told you that after the amazing wedding I went south again to Louisiana to see my cousin Brent Flowers. About 30 miles outside Many, LA, I had some car trouble...my truck started vibrating, a little bit worse every mile and I couldn't figure it out. It eventually got so bad I couldn't drive anymore! I pulled over and called Brent. Within an hour he was there with his truck and a trailer and we loaded it up. We dropped it off at a garage and waited till morning to get it fixed. He has a place on the lake, and we had a lot of catching up to do! We fished, swam, BBQ'd, played with his dog Shepherd, I met his baby boy, Jack, for the first time, it was awesome! We got my truck fixed in the next couple days (I had to buy a new driveshaft!), and was back on the road!
