Welcome to the Cordell Seconday Counselor's site! My name is Angela Caler and I am the counselor for students in grades 7th through 12th for Cordell Public Schools. My goal is to help promote student success in academic, personal, social and career development. I will be collaborating and consulting with teachers, parents and community agencies to help achieve this goal. I will also be providing character education through classroom instruction each month for every grade level. Short term/crisis counseling as well as small group counseling is also available.
As a School Counselor, I am an advocate for all students and help assist administrators, staff, teachers and families. I look forward to working together to help our students learn and develop. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
I'll be posting lots of information for career and college planning as well as resources for students and families. You'll also find pictures of the students and information about our activities, so visit regularly to see what's going on.
Don't forget to register for the next available ACT test which is September 10th. All seniors and juniors should consider taking the ACT during September. Please see the following link for more information or for registration details.
Yay for the start of a new school year! I hope you all had a great summer vacation and are ready to get started back at school. Students started school today, Thursday, August 11th. Schedule changes are currently underway, so if you'd like to make a change to the elective classes you're enrolled in, please sign up in the office by noon on Monday.
If you attended our last career exploration session, please let me know what you thought? Leave me a comment.
What did you expect to learn?
What did you learn?
What questions do you still have?
8th and 11th graders will continue exploring different careers. Please leave me a comment about the types of guest speakers you'd like me to find. What careers are you interested in?
Eighth grade students are beginning a career exploration unit with Mrs. Caler. They will be completing a portfolio through okcis.intocareers.org and participating in other career related activites. We will have several guest speakers at school to share their experiences and expertise with the students.
Before we begin, all 8th Graders should complete this short survey about your plans after high school by clicking on the link below.
Several university representatives have stopped by or have plans to visit with this year's seniors about admission and scholarship requirements. On Wednesday, 11/17, a rep from Cameron University in Lawton was here and on Thursday, 11/18, we visited with a rep from Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater. Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) will be here on Monday, 11/29 at 1:00 pm to meet with seniors.
A representative from Jostens's will be here on Monday, 11/22 to deliver class rings. Students must have a zero balance on their bill before they will be allowed to take home their ring.
Please join us this Sunday, November 21st for a benefit dinner for our Jr/Sr English teacher, Alayna Leppke. Mrs. Leppke is facing increased medical expenses due to a reoccurence of leukemia. We will serve dinner from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm in the high school cafeteria. Dinner is by donation only. We will also have lots of pies, breads, and other baked goods for sale to help you with your Thanksgiving plans.
Please join us in support of Mrs. Leppke!
Juniors and Seniors who sign up will have the opportunity to attend an ACT workshop with Chad Cargill on Tuesday, September 21st. CHS will pay for students to attend the workshop the first time and will pay half of the $30 fee for those attending for the second time.
Chad is the founder of Cargill Consulting. During high school Chad knew he needed to win scholarships in order to attend Oklahoma State University.
Chad's Freshman year in high school, he discovered that many scholarships were based on ACT scores and the journey was on. He took the ACT a total of 18 times in high school raising his score from a 19 to a 32. This phenomenal increase was simply due to him learning what was on the test and how to take it.
After graduating high school, Chad went back to his high school to tell some of the students what he learned from the test. When the results of those students' tests were very positive, the counselor asked if he would come back to tell more students what he had learned. After a few cycles of helping students at his alma-mater, other schools began hearing about the workshop.
Eventually Oklahoma State University approached Chad with the opportunity to start giving workshops hosted by the OSU Engineering department. He gave several workshops on campus and counselors began requesting him to come to their high schools. Chad agreed and the rest is history.
More information can be found on his website at <http://www.chadcargill.com>.
All students in grades 6th through 11th are currently choosing classes for next year. High school students should be sure to check their transcripts and the graduation checklist to verify they are taking the correct classes. Make your choices today!!

All 10th graders will take the ACT's PLAN test on Tuesday, September 29th.
The PLAN® program helps 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address school districts' high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years.
The EXPLORE® program is designed to help 8th graders explore a broad range of options for their future. EXPLORE prepares students not only for their high school coursework, but for their post–high school choices as well. It marks an important beginning for a student's future academic and career success.
