It is not the destination that makes your experience, it is the journey.  The summit, while part of the experience, is only a small part of the journey to the top.  If you live only for the destination, you are missing much of the experience.  It does not make sense to live only for the destination, and life's journey helps us to see that, because in the end, man's final destination is death. 

Solo expeditions certainly have their place, but the journey is best shared with others.  While traveling solo may be less frustrating, the person frustrating you one day will be making you laugh the next.  Your companion will help you to get the most out of an experience.  They will push and pull you toward a greater understanding of yourself.

Expeditions help to form comradery between members of the group.  Comradery, is not always seeing eye to eye, it is knowing you can count on the other person when you really need them.  Expeditions help to facilitate this comradery because everyone has their bad days, but in the backcountry those bad days are very hard to hide.  Comradery is a necessary part of an expedition, and without it the experience and maybe the expedition will be lost.

Take what you can from every experience and realize that others may be the key to learning more about yourself.

A brief passage from the journal of Claire Cumberland c/o 2010 as she reached the end of Expedition:

cold, wet and dirty i crawled back in and this is where reflection began:
i began to think of everyone of you.
if you were ok, if you needed comfort.
if you were scared and if you needed help.
i knew this time was for ourselves, but all i found i wanted was to be with you all again.
solo was a blessing in rejuvenation and contemplation, but it made me realize how much of a family we have become and how happiness really is only real when shared.
the contentment i get being alone pales to the joy i get from being in the midst of this, and any, community i have been blessed to be a part of.
it took being alone to realize i find my true joy and self-discovery with the help of the interaction i have with you.
sometimes i separate myself or feel separated, but these are the times that allow me the appreciation of being brought back into this community and the gratitude and love i find within it.
i will close with a quote i read in my book this morning that was ever so perfect for this experience:
"the time is long since past for us to remember and call upon the passion for life we are capable of knowing when we live, not bolstered in the solid steel encasement of a world made of machines, but breathing fully in intimacy and rhythm with the earth."
